    Lyrics:
    If you are the dealer
    I'm out of the game
    If you are the healer
It means I'm broken and lame
If thine is the glory then
    Mine must be the shame
    You want it darker
    We kill the flame
    Magnified, sanctified
    Be thy holy name
    Vilified, crucified
    In the human frame
    A million candles burning
For the help that never came
    You want it darker
    Hineni, hineni
    I'm ready, my Lord
There's a lover in the story
But the story's still the same
    There's a lullaby for suffering
    And a paradox to blame
But it's written in the scriptures
And it's not some idle claim
    You want it darker
    We kill the flame
    They're lining up the prisoners
And the guards are taking aim
    I struggled with some demons
    They were middle-class and tame
    I didn't know I had permission
    To murder and to maim
    You want it darker
    Hineni, hineni
    I'm ready, my Lord
    Magnified, sanctified
    Be thy holy name
    Vilified, crucified
    In the human frame
    A million candles burning
For the love that never came
    You want it darker
    We kill the flame
    If you are the dealer
Let me out of the game
    If you are the healer
    I'm broken and lame
    If thine is the glory
    Mine must be the shame
    You want it darker
    Hineni, hineni
    Hineni, hineni
    I'm ready, my Lord
    Hineni
    Hineni, hineni
    Hineni

I think the key to reading the song is there and the following line "I never knew I had permission to murder and to maim". The song may rely heavily on religious imagery, but I find it much more humanist.

@@anner.413 I take it more as linked to the previous line, condemning those who permit attrocity. While the rest of the song goes straight to the god who permits evil, these two lines go to the church within a capitalist realist world.

@@anner.413 What you are describing isn't freedom, freedom has no consequences. If you get punished for murder and maiming, you had no permission in the first place. Leonard struggled with his treatment of woman. His adultery. His not wanting to commit to the one. "I didnt know I had permission to murder and to maim" is sad really. Black. No Leonard saw it with both eyes, something many including you (Anne) will never see. He had permission to murder and to maim, truly without consequence. His self doubt was for nothing.

he basically sings how dark humanity is - we kill the flame (with permission to murder and to maim).
He's ready because of this: a million candles burning for a love that never came... He's ready (for eternal darkness - the flames burn for no one in the end).
It's also more than just Hineni, it's hineni twice. This seems to refer to the bible, the 2nd time it is mentioned is when Abraham presents his son to god - to sacrifice him: Here I am... Perhaps I'm too cynical about it, but wanting it darker is hard to see in a lighter sense ;)
"God calls Abraham by name, and Abraham’s response (Gen 22:1) is hineni: here I am. We can assume that God knows where Abraham is, and that Abraham himself knows that God does not need any help finding Abraham. So Abraham’s hineni is a response of a servant to his master, just as Abraham has already responded several times in faith earlier in Genesis: to leave his home and go where God sends him (Gen 12:1), and to trust in God’s promises (Gen 12:2-3; Gen 15, Gen 17 and Gen 18). But note that Abraham makes this first hineni response to God in chapter 22, before he knows what the Lord wants of him.
Abraham’s second hineni is in response to his son Isaac, as they are on the journey towards the mountain where Isaac is to be sacrificed. Isaac addresses Abraham as “my father”, and Abraham responds “hineni, my son” (Gen 22:7). This hineni is the loving response of a father to his son’s call, even more poignant as we know that Abraham is being asked to sacrifice his beloved son, his “only son” (Gen 22:2).
Abraham’s third and final hineni comes when the angel of the Lord intervenes, just as Abraham is about to kill his son. The angel calls his name twice: “Abraham, Abraham”, and Abraham responds: hineni (Gen 22:11). Abraham’s third hineni is once again the response of a servant, but from a deeper place, both emotionally and spiritually, from his first two “hineni”s. We may say that his first hineni comes out of awe, the second from love, and the third from his suffering. And therefore hineni implies not just readiness, not just service, but also surrender and taking responsibility - even being ready to change course if that’s what the Lord asks us to do.".
This is the only thing that makes me doubt my cynicism here... The 2 hineni's refer to love - seemingly.
At any rate, he considered himself to be a Jew and a Buddhist, an odd mix at best - making it harder to properly read into ;)
He knew the end was nigh, that is sure.

Tim Maloney ......he surely did. I didn’t get to see him until 2010 and even in older age, the man was truly spectacular. I’ve loved Leonard for almost 50 years and his voice on this album is so rich and beautiful, aged to absolute perfection. If you’re not familiar with his work, I can’t recommend the man highly enough. We often hear of “Suzanne” and “So Long Marianne” etc. and while lovely, there are countless lesser-known gems. Should you care to explore Leonard a little, here’s a few off the top of my head.... “One Of Us Cannot Be Wrong” (an early personal favourite), “Last Year’s Man” , “Mastersong” (truly brilliant lyrics) “The Gypsy’s Wife” through to the somewhat startling “The Future” and so very much more. Leonard released many fine albums over the years (as well as books of Poetry) ending with this beauty. I love pretty much everything the man ever did.

I discovered Leonard Cohen over 35 years ago, went down a serious rabbit hole, bought all his albums going back to 1967, bought all his books of poetry. Like any kid, when I heard the sweet melodic sounds of Chelsea Hotel and then heard the line "giving me head on the unmade bed" I was like WHOA! This guy's a badass! Lol but his ability to put to words the human experience, humanities frailty and flaws, wants and desires, the good the bad the ugly. I think as a teen it was his "being real" that first hooked me, but as I've aged I've only gotten to appreciate him more. Leonard Cohen songs often said the quiet parts out loud. Put voice to our most vulnerable thoughts and feelings we hold quietly inside.

They called his music “Songs to slit your wrists to!” but the fascinating Leonard Cohen, was my favourite poet, singer-song-writer and personality. I never liked poetry, but Leonard Cohen's poems were an exception. I was never a music lover but his songs were an exception. His words reflected his turbulent life. He could be so soulful thoughtful, even dark and depressive but with a unique and striking sense of humour. I never met him but I just loved the man.

Barbara MacArthur.........whereas I have always loved poetry and music and indeed Leonard Cohen. As a girl, I was ridiculed for listening to the "depressing" Cohen, I'm so glad I've never listened to "knockers", I adore everything LC has ever done. And yes, I think many folk miss the fact that Leonard's sense of humour was exquisite.

“Songs to slit your wrists to" doesn't mean it in the literal sense but it means his music makes you look deep inward down to the dark places of our minds that we don't like to go.

    • @lindadote
      @lindadote 5 ปีที่แล้ว

Jrock420blam ......oh, I assure you it was meant in the strictest sense, at least in my experience. In my youth, I only knew *one* other person who enjoyed Cohen’s material, *everyone* else (without exception) mocked me regards my “awful, depressing, suicidal music”. Now all these years later, Leonard is gone and everyone *loves* the man, people are fickle.

I woke up soon today, i did my morning meditation, i ate my breakfast, and then i open Facebook. All the positivity i have reached, disappeared when i read about leonard cohen's death. I start to cry, the tears were falling from my eyes and i can't stopped them. I told my father about this, trying to make my voice less trembling than i can. I went in my bedroom and i felt my face burning, with hot tears falling. I was full of pain, i sighed slowly, i dried my wet eyes and go to school, with all this negativity. Now i'm fine, because he left many beatiful things to us, because death is the most natural thing on this earth and because i think he did the best with his life. Thank you Leonard you changed my still short life.

This song is a Jewish confession before death. In Judaism, it is customary before death to hold a confession and admit transgressions about the mitzvot of do and don't do according to the word of God.
It is so deep that I understand the use of the word darker. At the end of the confession he says the word "Here I am" in Hebrew which means - "I am ready" or "I accept". This is a completely Jewish text with reference to the Jewish Kaddish prayer for the deads. Jesus was also Jewish, therefore the crucified in a human frame, describes the human soul that wants to live imprisoned inside a human body and wants to be freed.

I didn't grow up in Quebec, but my family is all from here and I currently live in Montreal. The unique thing about this place, Quebec and Montreal, is that religion is part of the framework here in a way that I really can't begin to explain to people from other parts of Canada. Cohen struggled a lot, it seemed, with his relationship to the religious and the spiritual, but it is a consistent part of almost all of his work. And I think Montreal, being here, you start to understand some of why that is. There is Jewish and Christian symbology all over this city, and everything here is named after a saint of some kind,. Montreal is known as a city of churches. I feel like being here has helped me connect more with where he was coming from and what shaped his music.

There were no talking about, quitting while on top. Taking a break.
i actually believe, that his song, was his way of telling us that this was his last piece of art. He knew he were dying, and this was his way of telling us.. By making one hell of a good album.

If you are the dealer, I'm out of the game
If you are the healer, it means I'm broken and lame
If thine is the glory then mine must be the shame
    You want it darker
    We kill the flame
Magnified, sanctified, be thy holy name
Vilified, crucified, in the human frame
A million candles burning for the help that never came
    You want it darker
    Hineni, hineni
    I'm ready, my lord
There's a lover in the story
But the story's still the same
    There's a lullaby for suffering
    And a paradox to blame
But it's written in the scriptures
And it's not some idle claim
    You want it darker
    We kill the flame
    They're lining up the prisoners
And the guards are taking aim
    I struggled with some demons
They were middle class and tame
I didn't know I had permission to murder and to maim
    You want it darker
    Hineni, hineni
    I'm ready, my lord
Magnified, sanctified, be thy holy name
Vilified, crucified, in the human frame

As I am writing this while listening to this song... I'm currently in a bad episode of depressions and it has been like this for years. This song hits me on another level, straight into the soul but it gives me some sort of hope and strenght to endure my state of mind. I know it will get better but it is just a matter of time until the next episode strikes.
Mr. Cohen once said a few words about depressions and these words decribe perfectly how I feel in such moments.
"I speak of a clinical depression that is the background of your entire life, a background of anguish and anxiety, a sense that nothing goes well, that pleasure is unavailable and all your strategies collapse."
Take care of you all out there.

*That entire album is totally haunting and heartbreaking... We can hear the last steps of an old man, considering the wounds and the ephemeral joys of his past. After a long journey into the darkness, penetrated by some lightning, Leonard Cohen is now ready to close the book of his life for good : he did what he had to do. Thank you so much, dear Leonard, for all the beauty and the emotions that you gave to your listeners during all these years. It is priceless. Your flame will survive to your body, at the time to leave. The sacred fire of your soul cannot be killed. It is living inside us and we won't let it go.*

Amen, goodguypete. . '17 calls upon us all to grow a few inches in height, ignore the media's narcissistic projections of red & blue states, mix 'em up and make 'em purple.
Mr. Cohen understood that. His poetry was the lance piercing the armor of petty bloviating con men like "The King of Orange" and his fascist minions:
      "I can't run no more
      with that lawless crowd
while the killers in high places
      say their prayers out loud.

Thanks to everybody who answered my question on this thread.
A LEONARD COHEN STORY...to go down in history maybe.....
I would love to share a very touching and funny moment in my life which included my best friend's son who hated Leonard Cohen and the fact that my best friend and i had spent years, nay decades taking ridicule from my best friend's son because of our adoration for everything that is and was Leonard Cohen.
So, after years of ridicule on the subject, the following really happened. My best friend's son decided to get married. A night before the wedding, we were all around at my best friend's house when he decided to play one of Leonard's songs. Off marched my best friend's son to do what he normally did. TURN THE CD PLAYER OFF and replace Leonard with other songs as soon as his father's back was turned. A huge argument ensued and in the battle many swear words were exchanged. So, that sets up the night before the wedding.
Moving forward to the day of the wedding and trust me, you couldn't make this up. I am sitting next to my best friend's brother who has decided to film the wedding(with permission) and just as he turns the camera towards my best friend's son, i happen to notice my best friend talking to his ex-wife. Quite a lovely moment captured on the camera. But what came next has to be one of the funniest things i have ever witnessed. The vicar has started to talk very quietly to the bride-to-be and the groom(my best friend's son remember..and ultimate hater of Mr Cohen and his music), when suddenly, with no warning a song starts to gently play in the background...Leonard Cohen's SECRET LIFE...my best friend picks up on the moment and turns to look at his brother and in particular, myself to see if i have heard Leonard. Damn right i had. I was doing my level best not to give away my "internal laughter of epic proportions" and slowly failing in my task..looks passed back and forth(with larger and larger smiles..and a little laughter until suddenly my best friend's brother started laughing because he had noticed my best friend's son had suddenly woken up to the idea that somehow LEONARD COHEN has found his way into the wedding.
Now the laughter has spread as people in the congregation who were asking each other what the laughter was about and word was spreading about what is happening...THE WHOLE CHURCH IS NOW IN FITS OF LAUGHTER...as the slightly angry groom turned and said to the vicar....
"sorry Vicar, do you mind me asking..WHAT IN THE HELL IS THAT PLAYING FOR....WHO ARRANGED THIS SH*T"...the vicar's answer came swift and sure.."i guess that would be the great Leonard Cohen himself son...i think the man worthy of playing at anybody's wedding..or FUNERAL of course...are you ready to get married my son?"
THE MARRIAGE barely lasted a year....topped sadly by Leonard's sad demise.
STILL...we have the great man's creation..RIP sir...as one songwriter to another...respect to you.
