This is an almost exact translation, I may have made mistakes...The most fun this vehicle is on country roads between 80 and 180 Km/h, curvy routes, downhill, through forest, land. There you experience the vehicle the best. I am Roger KAege, 51 years old. I have a master degree in Bodyworks and Mechanics, I live here in Stetten, a small suburb in Rhineland-Palatine, germany and I am crazy for Porsche. When in 2009 in a Magazine I saw the 1st Singer Porsche, I was so fascinated by the optics that I tought: WOW, such a car I´d like to own. Then I did some research, saw what a car alike costs, for myself it was clear, unbelieveable exspensive-not in my range. So I thought of the idea, how can I recreate such a car in my own style. I am bodyworks guy and mechanic, so lets see how we can accomplis this ourselves (he and a friend). The color is called „Geysir Grey metallic“, this is the 50 years ed, color of 901, I´ve chosen the color because it´s a tone from the 70s, and a metallic, modern paintjob so I have a combination of an old color and metallic. That was very important to me because everywhere on the car one can see modern components and the old optics, may it be the headlights, the steering wheel or the instruments. Doesn´t matter, anywhere there is a combination of old looks and modern functions. For me it´s very hard to do something so good that I´m satisfied, there I am very self critic. On the Retro I and my plastics guy have created 5 different front bumpers until I liked it and then he said, now it´s enough and I said no, it´s not and now we have 5 front bumpers lying around in a corner… From the purchase of the vehicle until it was finished it took 2.000 hours. Much development was made and we have made things twice, I had to to a lot of design, I didn´t want to copy Singer, I wanted to build my own proportions. I even wanted to work on a different basis, I have chosen a 993 because I have thought, that when Singer chooses a 964 and puts a extremely much parts of 993 components into it, I wanted to improve the concept and took a 993. So you have a series vehicle that is very very good, the best air cooled series technics that Porsche ever built. SO I thought, I take a 993 and NOT an 964. In comparison to Singer one can mostly see the costs of development. Singer has put much effort into lamds, headlights, chromed parts, nickled parts,,, Where there I have used original parts. So when there is an accident you dont have to rely on Singer. So you can repair it with PORSCHE parts, and there lies the big difference to Singer. In opposite I believe, my car is more daily driver because I have normal technics, serial technics of Porsche which has proved reliability and can be repaired by every Porsche mechanic if I should sell him one day, there I see the big advantage over the Singer Vehicles… As when I got it registered in 2016, I turned 50 and it was the most beautiful gift for my birthday… As I could give to myself when I drove it for the very first time… From suspension ti tis a very secure, stabile Vehicle A modern Vehicle as it has ABS, ESP and so on… And it is very reliable in the fringes on road. The car for me is almost perfect, but there always is something I would improve or make different, it´s like building a house, only in the 2nd or 3rd house you build your exact dream house.so you also change and even here I would change things here and there. I am proud of what I´ve accomplished for myself and am part of history of Porsche. Please excuse for not translating exact words...Have a nice day.
Wow amazing, I always wanted a Porsche since I first saw one when I was 5 years old. Over 30 years later. Finally pulled the trigger and bought one. The way it’s built, it’s perfect for me now as I am in my 40’s. After watching this, it just made me realize. I must purchase one more to make it look as simple as this piece of art. The original classic body with long nose is what I need after 50.
This episode touched me greatly. Perhaps the art of craftsmanship in full display in this technologically sterile world. It gives me hope that this art will live on
Very nicely done. Shows that if you the expertise and experience you can build your vehicle to your standards for a lot less than something like the Singer. It must be blast to drive up through the vineyards on the German B roads.
Amazingly I find TH-cam to be the best inspirational channel ever-Singer is fantastic, but like you and Mr or should I say KING Kaege says,it does not have to be a Singer, cost like a singer, but its inspired by a Singer. That said, seeing all here on TH-cam we get to find our dreams and do all we can do.Thank you King Kaege,my road has been paved :D
Great video. Kudos to Kaege for building it himself, for saying I can do that and making a stunning Porsche of his own. I'd bet he'd be able to sell some of his parts if he wanted to...
It’s cool but I believe it is cooler to just not maintain your car exactly, leave some hail dents on. Let that chewing gum stain the coin tray and make the pennies all gummy. Run the tires bald. That is real motoring. One day this guy can be like me.
I love "hot rod" Porsche's but am growing tired of the "backdate" movement (I realize it's a fine line between the two and always a point of contention with P-car fans) however I think this is a fantastic blend of old and new. Personally I prefer the slightly more classic 911 shape of the 964 over the 993, but this is the nicest 993 "restomod" or "backdate" etc. And it's so nice to see an AC Porsche without a ducktail, whale tail, etc. As always great work here Petrolicious! My favorite video of 2018 so far!
My daily driver is a '06 997 Carrera 4 that, in my mind, meshes the best of the old and new. But I do miss the smells of my 73.5 Targa...and the rough ride, the smell of leaking oil burning on the cases and the ting when the door closes.
+Eric Hakanson The reason people are doing this is because modern Porsches are very boring looking and not nice. People are trying to take Porsches from the 80s and 90s and making them more like a car from the 1960s. That does not mean they are trying to engineer a car from the 1960s but they want the style from that era that Porsche and other manufacturers should have kept.
Absolutely brilliant! I reckon you certainly have written a little bit of Porsche history here! For all the discussion about whether your car or a Singer is better, more or less value etc, I reckon they are both works of art that cannot be compared. I would place an order for both! I dont need to drive your car to realise you too like Singer have created a Masterpiece! I will be contacting you as soon as I can afford one! 🙂 Seriously!
Ludovic Bresson apparemment, de base c'était une 911 993 et il l'a complètement transformé, j'imagine même pas le nombre d'heures qu'il a dû passer dessus
Great job! Although I love Singer Porsche’s and others, I’m sure it’s possible to restomod a classic Porsche for a ‘“sensible” amount of money and yet get an awesome result like you did.
Plot Summary: Mr. Kaege is a trained car body maker with his own business. Thumbs up for the german dual educational system. He saw a Singer in 2009 but it was too expensive for him. He began doing a resto mod it on his own. He choosed a 993 because Singer used many 993 parts on a 964 which made no sense to Mr. Kaege. The point he did not understand about the Singer approach. He focused more on original Porsche parts to keep it easy to put into service and in case the car is for sale.
To the producers of this website I say excellent video! I say this not just for the cars but also leaving the interviews in the mother languages. I'm fluent in English & German, yet I have enough of other languages to enjoy the commentary--if I don't understand something then I enjoy the cars. As the Germans say, "Gut gemacht". :)
Just beautiful! I do wonder if it has lost any of the go cart feel of an older G-series or long hood model? Certainly more drivable, but perhaps losing some of the feedback? All the same, pure art which you can drive! Love the slow mo shot through the autumn leaves at 6.00 - Great work
Such a beautiful Car and one of the most gorgeous Porsche I've seen in a long time. Cannot believe this thing is only 30km away from my hometown! Nice work Roger!
It is not about Kaege against Singer ! Both are the most beautiful in their own world !!! Kaege is the typical german answer of a modern classic from Germany. I love both and, by the way, they are both only affordable for Richy Rich.......long live Kaege...long live Singer !!!
Rob Dickinson mentioned in an interview that the way a 993 rear suspension works wont provide the „classic“ porsche driving behavior he had in mind (cant remember the tech details) as a reason they picked the 964. just throwing it out there in case someone is curious about that, dont wanna judge if thats justified or not. Edit: refering to the carfection video about singer, 13:10
Awesome video! I've always loved old-school Porsche 911. Whether it's a resto or a restomod, etc. as long as some elements of the old-school Porsche are still there. :)
There is something about in the story, when gentlemen with limited cash trying to pursue his dream car. It's better story rather than some guy with a lot of cash shoot by petrolicious, they're just wanna show of they are richer than most of the viewers. Although they have same passion about cars. In the end, I love Singer's works until I saw this Video. Kaeger is the answer for most petrolhead loving Porsche
Read Moritz Veit's post above, the gloss is taken off the video when you learn it costs 300k. Not _quite_ the everyman story. EDIT: Just seen your post under Mortitz', ignore me.
No... it's not even 300k. I e-mailed Kaege for a quotation. With the cheapest possible donor 993, and taxes included, the STARTING price for a Kaege is EUR 400,000 (USD 500,000). That's the same price as a Singer and Singer is much higher quality!
I talked at length with Rob Dickinson when he had but two Singers under his belt, and he certainly suggested then that he had very limited cash - in fact, most of it was tied up in the two cars. But he pursued his dream, this guy will too. As my daughter is fond of saying, if you can, "Chase your bliss!"
Sehr sehr stolz! Ein eigenes kleines Stück Geschichte in der Porschewelt schreiben ist eine große Aufgabe und die wurde Perfekt umgesetzt. Großartig! *very very proud! Writing one´s one little paragraph in the story history of Porsche is a big deal and was implemented in perfection! Awesome!
I think Singer and Kaege have the SAME SPIRIT ! And I am thankfull that they both did a great film about there creations !!! So we can enjoy dreaming....how it would be to have a Porsche like there`s....Singer is very German-2000 in their way of thinking and doing things. Kaege is very 60s, 70s in (his German values of) doing things. Since I can`t afford a Porsche, I looked for something equal in emotions and Performance and bought an Alfa GTA 3.2 V6. It sounds , feels, performs equal to my friends 911`s and cost me 5000 Euro !!! First time the stereo stays off since the GTA sounds Amazing !!! The only thing I am missing is the smell of gas and oil in the car......but I am working on that, hahaha...
While Singer is incredible, the Kaege logic of starting with a 993 and using Porsche series parts makes great sense. The ability to find parts down the road is huge as I've experienced trying to source parts for my older 911s
I think this chap has a Singer complex. No need to mention how much better he thinks his is. I still prefer the Singer look but a good car all the same.
Fantastic concept! Love the idea of building it from a 993. Best video from Petrolicious in a long time. Congrats guys! Kaege if you could let us know what fraction of a cost of a Singer (including your man-hours) that would be fantastic!
The price of a Kaege, including the least expensive 993 donor you can find, is EUR 400,000 (includes taxes). This is about USD 500,000. The starting price for a Singer is about USD 500,000. I think the choice just made itself for you!
The thing that bugs me about Kaege is that he thinks he is speaking to a different kind of customer than Singer.. Where you pay 500k for a Singer you still pay around 300k for a Kaege. I think someone who could afford to buy a 300.000 Dollar Restomod could also afford to spent half a million on one. Either way I think both Singer and Kaege are absolutely gorgeous pieces of art but unattainable for almost all of us
you are right that price is not that much of different, if I had these money I would be in temptation, well one thing is being able to afford something and another to justify it. but who cares what I think big up to Petrolicious for delivering of such a good content :)
Moritz Veit. not necessarily, if you watch Barrett Jackson auctions, a guy will bid $250,000 for a car, but is unwilling to bid $252,000....it's hard to believe he won't fork over an extra $2,000....but it happens all the time.
Thank you for pointing that out. Like you say, he makes it sound like it was a _much_ cheaper build, perhaps in the order of a fifth or tenth of the price. Not _quite_ the everyman story, after all. Still beautiful, though.
As a Porsche owner for since the late 70s I appreciate Kaege's thinking. As much as I envy the Singer I like Kaege's thought process around the 993 platform and using Porsche series parts. The distinction resonates with me
Kaege, you are a wizard. Car looks absolutely gorgeous. Can't believe you did all that from 993
absolutely stunning to see he did that from a 993.
Gregory Casimir That is a 993?
Vincent T. Yes, I mean, it was
Amazing, had no idea this was 993-based. So in love with this now, just wish I knew what he was saying! ;-)
use the closed caption!
This is perfection. The Singer's are over the top and pretentious. This thing is spot on. Simple. Understated. Class.
Well done indeed.
They are BOTH great … two things can be great at the same time.

Nothing can beat passion and commitment. Awesome.

I am a classic Porsche guy and I am glad to see a video on a restored/restomodded Porsche.
Probably the best custom build car I've ever seen.
And that spoiler that lifts up. Splendid ! Carporn all the way
This car is unbelievably beautiful, I could cry right now.
I swear it's 911s that attract the most obsessive, dedicated project builders of all. You can't argue with what results, mind!
He did a FANTASTIC JOB with his creation.. I would without a doubt choose Kaege over Singer!! Well done Sir, well done!!! 😊
Just a stunningly beautiful car, which he is quite aware of.

Sehr, sehr, sehr schönes KFZ!!! Absolute Faszination, dass nicht nur Singer solche schönen Porsche bauen kann. Chapeau!
Had the opportunity to see the car in person and it's just incredible
Da bleibt nur zu sagen; Hut ab vor dieser Leistung.👏👌
Beautiful car, the build quality is incredible.
Didn't understand a single word but when it comes to a beautiful porsche that is universal.
Its looking tidy. All the parts fits each other very very clean. It's pure.
Magnifique, splendide, une pure merveille d’élégance et de chique sportif. 👍🏻

I watched without subtitles and feel like i could understand exactly what he was saying. Perfect
Well done ! I like the idea he used a 993, for all the sensible reasons he gave. Great German engeneering !
Plot Summary:
Mr. Kaege is a trained car body maker with his own business. Thumbs up for the german dual educational system.

Love the way this car sits on the road, it has a nice stance.
This man had no money to buy a Singer, but to start a company, wow that only in Germany.
Beautiful, everything it could use and nothing it doesn’t need
no question about it. It looks awesome and I bet it handles like a dream. A little competition for Singer I guess.

I have had a few modern Porsche's. I think it's time for me to invest in a classic one.
In your dreams?)
Excellent idea, I’ll take timeless design classic over newer style any day... to much going on in the new models
Beautiful car, love how the gauges and dash finished
Just beautiful! I do wonder if it has lost any of the go cart feel of an older G-series or long hood model? Certainly more drivable, but perhaps losing some of the feedback? All the same, pure art which you can drive!
Love the slow mo shot through the autumn leaves at 6.00 - Great work
Das is wunderbar....
Roger Kaege very nice car, well done.
I like the aesthetic of this car a lot more than the Singer, and surely it is much more accessible in terms of money.
I didn't understand one word, but still enjoyed this beautiful masterpiece.

It's embarassing to watch him. Plus, his starting price for a Kaege is the same as for a Singer, essentially.
Exactly ! The Singer complex is palpable in the entire video.

You guys do great videos. I don't understand why you're unable to include captions so everyone can enjoy your work.
Absolutely beautiful!
I’ve never found German to be a particularly beautiful sounding language, but on a Porsche film, it just sounds right.
thank you. thats a perfect 911.
love it
Work of art.
I don't speak German, so I have absolutely no idea what he was saying other than a few words, but amazing car, and great video!
Moritz Veit does he sell these for 300k or is that what it has cost him including labour?
Thank you for pointing that out. Like you say, he makes it sound like it was a _much_ cheaper build, perhaps in the order of a fifth or tenth of the price.
Not _quite_ the everyman story, after all. Still beautiful, though.
As a Porsche owner for since the late 70s I appreciate Kaege's thinking. As much as I envy the Singer I like Kaege's thought process around the 993 platform and using Porsche series parts. The distinction resonates with me
No entiendo Alemán pero solo con las imágenes me puedo imaginar lo que dices.
Que hermoso Porsche!!
