Porsche 911: One Car to Do It All - Petrolicious

  • More often than not, classic car owners deliberate whether to use their cars as daily drivers or keep them as garage queens. Why can't one car be everything? Black Beauty, Jack Olsen's Porsche 911 RSR, gets the royal treatment in The 12-Gauge Garage, but it also proudly wears rubber on the street and the track.
Jack built an enviable shop out of a suburban, two-car garage and worked on it until its engineering, design, and function matched that of the Black Beauty, a Porsche through and through.

I won't lie. The wing isn't there because it looks good. But if you google my name and the word wing or aero you'll see that it's well-thought-out, effective, cheap, and (also important) it unbolts and gets stowed when I'm not on the track.

I think I like this car a lot because it reminds me of how I modified my Miata. It's a 1999, but it has a higher compression bottom end from a 2001, transmission is from a 94, brakes are from the 2004 turbo Miata. My suspension setup is one that I co-developed with a pro shock builder and ended up with something really special. Many of my friends jump around between cars and they always never feel quite right in some way. When you spend a lot of time and are patient when developing a platform and yourself, the results are always much better and more satisfying. I ended up with an absolutely sweet road car that is incredible fun at both track and autocross, too.
This is how you do a car right.

I love 911s, but I LOVE that garage! I watch this video every few months...just keep coming back to it, and thinking about it in between. I read the details on the lift somewhere, he got the industrial lift used for like $400 and did all the work himself. Was shocked to learn that all in, it cost him something like $650. That's part of what is so amazing; it's refreshing to see someone put in that much time and effort into making something as perfect as possible. Not throwing money at a problem, applying mind and muscle. #ingenuity

  • @adam872

Love this guy, his car and his garage. That relentless iteration is pretty inspiring. I can't imagine too many more fun things than sitting in that garage and geeking out on all the details for several hours. I especially love the fact that Jack has learned to do all the things he wanted to do and then did them. Respect.

Watching this for the third time… It reinforces the idea that a 911 is a forever type of car, and that you can find satisfaction in mastering and continually improving the one, right car. I have a 964, and I don’t see anything newer that would make me happier automotively.

My favorite Petrolicious video yet. Jack, I remember being struck by your car the first time I saw it on Rennlist years ago and it remains a high water mark I hope to reach in my own projects one of these days. I didn’t realize until now that the garage I’ve been studying the last year for ideas in setting my own up was put together by the same genius! One of these days when I make the trip from the east coast to the west coast to fulfill more Porsche dreams, I hope to run into you at the track. Keep it up man!

One of the best 911 video/documentaries I have ever seen. Jack Olsen's passion and dedication are so inspiring. I couldn't even imagine that he is a writer and not a mechanic or something similar. His story makes me feel less afraid about trying new tools of trade and start making things done.
Would love to get to know him and work with him... too bad I'm a few thousand miles away from his whereabouts xD
This Porsche is much better than the Singer ones. The love and dedication... maybe not as fast or as light, but definitely much more "wantable"...

Being a Porschephile myself, as well as a writer and someone who appreciates beautiful AND functional design, I truly related to the film, car, and Mr. Olsen on many levels.
His idea of wanting to further the evolution of both the 911 and his garage into single tools that can do nearly everything well parallels the Porsche philosophy brilliantly. An excellent video!

Everything is a compromise. Mechanically or otherwise. That may sound obvious, but it plays in the physical world (physics...dugh) and the human/emotional one as well (marriage?). What Petrolicious speaks of here cuts both ways. Many who have taken the time to find and watch this video have been bitten by the air cooled bug. I am no exception. I can still remember those many decades ago how I wished for a 911 turbo. I can still vividly remember gazing into that book of exotics and latching onto it, despite the competition. Between repeats of the Rolling Stones,' Jump'in Jack Flash, I knew I would have one someday. Truly, after all I have lived through I did not forget that experience. And from modern media I find I am not the only one. That image, that lust, was so strong that I am now (some forty years later) waiting for delivery of my 600
(whp) 964-based RSR twin turbo. What stirs a man to do such things? To remember an image on paper and pursue it far beyond flesh and its first experience? Ferdinand had no idea...

  • @waynester71

I love that it's mixed and matched.. The focus on perfection, matching numbers etc..while nice really detracts from some brilliant cars out there, cars should look, sound and go well.. I think this Porsche does just that.. Kudos to the owner.

Man, such a fan of this video for too many reasons to count. An early 911 is my all time dream car and has been for a long time now. I'm hoping to own one myself some day to use in a similar way Jack uses his; pretty much everything. The video is so relatable to me for much more than that though, but mad props to Jack -- a fictional writer by trade -- for taking on all of this on his own without any prior knowledge. Truly motivational and inspiring ✊

THIS GUY IS A BOSS !!! I dont know how I feel after watching this video....Envious? Jealous? I think those feelings are in there somewhere as well as a kinship. Ive ALWAYS wanted a 911...from when I was a young child looking into car windows to see how "fast" they go from their speedometer maximum....and that was a long time ago indeed. Now...somebody somewhere sold one of Steve McQueens 911's and my 911 dream SUDDENLY seemed to go POOF! I will find one someday...not running and ressurect it. Sometimes I really think that I was born in the wrong country!
Searching the internet, Croatian sites for the Porsche cars (old ones ofc) & there is only one Porsche in Croatia that is selling it's '81 Targa without engine & gearbox, everything else on the car is in real good shape. So the car is missing engine & gearbox, as I could see it was 3.0 with the original 74 000 kilometers. So only way to own a Porsche in Croatia is to buy that one & only Targa that is selling for 24 000€ & try to find engine & gearbox in some other country. I mean 24 000€ for that classic that is selling is not so bad because car is in really good condition, but without 2 most important things.
Always watching this Porsche videos & thinking to myself wow I was really born in the wrong country.
Love this video, love the garage, love how this guy is talking about his Porsche.. Really love every second of it!!

This is what you call "making it your own." There are so many purists out there that trash "frankenstein" cars, but the car community is all about diversity and vision. The car community would be pointless if everyone planned on restoring cars to its original form and keeping there. There's nothing wrong with that, but it's refreshing to see people tuning their cars to make them better or stand out more. This Jack guy has a vision for his car and he paid the money, time, blood, sweat, and tears to make it his own. This guy clearly knows what he's doing as he tracks his car and tunes the car himself. That's pretty damn impressive. Keep up the good work my man, I hope to work on a classic Porsche myself one day.

Jack Olsen you roll well. Loved the video~! Love the car. Great narration. Clean tools and work-space is what you do when you are not using the garage. Loved the floor lift~! Good use of the space - drop-down tool storage and work surfaces. I am a long-time Porsche fan. I wish I had this one~! Thanks!!!

Bravo, sir. I'm sure you've heard this before but you're living a life I'm trying to create. It sure does look fun. Love the frankenporsche too! I'm a big fan of the 72RS body, but I'd want decent disc breaks and as you've done, better suspension. Classy stuff.

Amazing video! Watched it twice now and that car, and that garage, and that guy just all seem really great! Thanks for the inspiration! Also watched the guide to Willow Springs by the same guy to try and save some time on the time trials of GT6 - also a super great video. Thanks Jack!

That's the definition of a car enthusiast and it doesn't mean liking every
car produced. But enjoying a particular car that the title says(does it all).

"horsepower looks good in a magazine article, but suspension is what gets you around the track fast" Very true statement. This is why I hate it when people complain that some cars are underpowered like the older civics and the brz. The aftermarket is there for all of your speed and HP needs but if the chassis is crap and bloated then it's going to handle like crap.

Even after seeing this video as many times as I have, it's no less inspiring to me now than it was when I first saw it. This really lays waste to the seemingly endless excuses of people not to get involved in projects they'd like to and can afford to, but won't exercise the risk or sacrifice the space or what have you.

Graduating from Cal Poly SLO, I came through the red light coming from Poly onto High Way 1 and spun a 1967 912. Old Michelin Pilot tires, I over-corrected several times and wound up facing on-coming traffic--which thankfully was still at the red light 100m opposite me. I cracked the rear wheel from hitting the medium. The car that belonged to my GF at the time; a beautiful red car. Around 2004.
