1 - Procrastination: Moderate procrastination increases creativity (because it gives our mind/subconscious time to ruminate on the idea). 2 - Fear and doubt: Fear and doubt are natural - embrace them. Idea doubt is healthy, self doubt is not. Use idea doubt to help refine your ideas. Rough drafts suck for a reason. Keep trying. Our biggest regrets are our inactions, not our actions. Instead of fearing failure, be more afraid of failing to try. People regret the things they never did more than the things they failed at. 3 - Lots of bad ideas: In order to have lots of good ideas, you will probably have lots of bad ideas too. Be willing to fail... a lot. In most cases, more failure equals more success. You won’t be judged for your bad ideas. Bonus: To be original, you don’t have to be first, you just have to be different and better (first mover advantage is mostly a myth). Don’t accept the default, look for a better solution.

Oh yeah it took a great big effort for his contribution to Tensors for which he gets credit everywhere for his notation that an 8 year old could have come up with and that many people would have just naturally used (Tensor notation). He admitted to not being able to understand tensors, which is not as hard as learning differential geometry by any stretch. If that guy scratched his feet while doing physics he got credit for it. We can forget people who really came up with relativity but credit Einstein for the most insignificant things constantly.

A pro tip is to only do this on important projects or ideas you're working on, and stay diligent and tidy in everything else in your life - meaning be on time, keep a clean household, manage your finances. Totally agree! I'm maximally efficient on the b*llshit that needs to be done so I can relax, drift, wallow, dream, wonder in that focused-unfocused flow mode that is almost spiritual. All my best ideas come from there.
Its not procrastination itself, but rather "distracting" yourself with other physical or mental tasks that are mildly mentally challenging. Something thats distracting enough for the subconcious mind to wander off, make new connections and then you have the inspired idea suddenly appear. The classic example of this is finding inspiration in the shower.
The distraction can even by physical. I received an e-mail at work a few years ago with the subject "The Result of the Dog Walk". One of our designers had the IT equivalent of writer's block, gave up staring at the screen and took his dog for a walk. When he returned, the answer had come to him. A less enlightened company would have complained that is does not pay people to walk their dogs on the company time but fortunately that was not the case here.

This is true, my literature teacher gave an assignment on a passage we were reading , i prcastinated until the dawn of submition. So when i woke up in a frenzy remembering i had done nothing, I began to ask my 8 year old sister how she would feel if she was in the character's shoes, and with her emotions i wrote my work in a dialogue form instead of in a paragraph form and even submited the draft. It turned out i got the highest mark in that assignment because it was original and believable. I didn't even know what I was doing.

Necessity is the mother of invention. I often find myself leaving a task to the last minute and consequently having to engineer a method of completing that task in record time. I'm not ashamed of doing this, either. It's a valuable skill.

I'm a musician and producer. I watched this video like one year ago and thought that you have to create a lot to generate a good idea but now I watched it again and I think I changed my mind. Currently I'm working in a studio that has a lot of big composers and producers coming and going and I've watched them work. How they create tracks out of nothing is with really simple ideas and they start to build on top of them. For example, you start with one melody in the Mellotron, simple, 8 bars, monophonic, and then you build a harmony on top. Then you switch sound and you make a new melody with a new rhythm and you rinse and repeat, I've seen guys do this for 30 minutes and after they have a HUGE and great sounding 8 bars, that now they can flesh out in a lengthier arrangement. I tested it and it works! It works because if you are not a crazy good instrumentalist you can play simple lines and then intertwine them together to make them work and have a super great idea at the end, instead of spending 2 hours trying to come up with something super original and getting frustrated for your lack of technical ability in guitar. In the end I think the 'bad ideas' talked in this video they are real for sure but the 'not so good' or 'not creative enough' can act as building blocks of the big idea, just keep writing and keep yourself in the creative flow.
Tha's great! I love hearing about when others inspire others! I'm not a musician by any stretch, but I've felt the same when I'm around my creative team members. But I realize that it doesn't have to be just my blocks that complete the building, but those of the entire team.

A HS art teacher of mine gave me one of the most important pieces of advice in my entire life... she'd see me frustrated with myself and my art piece and tell me, "you just haven't figured it out yet." This has become an encompassing mantra for me in my art, my career and my self. Lucky to have had this insight so young. I build stuff, usually something my wife wants. I move easily from #3 to #4 because of my depression. This simple idea that the first prototype will never capture the potential to be the best design has helped me so much. I look back and think, " Why did I ever think I would come up with the perfect design and engineering on the first try?" So simple, so helpful.
Many originals aren't even given the chance to express their creativity.They are already crippled and punished at school for characteristics (such as procrastination and many others) that, like it was said in the video, fuel creativity. Society rarely... never takes into account those unusual characteristics of those unusual creative people - its task is to destroy all those "dangerous" characteristics, putting forward what society calls "productivity" over creativity. And this makes sense since society is very focused on mediocrity, because mediocrity is the majority! Society caters for the needs of the many! NOT the few exceptional people. But even though originals are few, the new ideas they can put out into the world can literally transform it. So spotting and nourishing originality and creativity is of great value. Only we rarely do spot creativity let alone nourish it...Many exceptional and creative people have only been recognized long after their death. Truly exceptional and creative people don't really need society though... Nah... they are lost in their creative mind, in their art (the confirmation of their worth is made through their expression of the art they focus on, which is why they can bare and don't really mind about being considered outcasts). No they don't need society - society needs them.

I learned this win I won $3,000 scholarship from a public art design competition out of a room full of fine artists, graphic designers, and illustrators- I was one of the only filmmakers. The thing that pushed me above was that I just never stoped designing and redesigning. When everyone else was already making their 3-D versions, I STILL hadn’t settled on my design and it was the last week before it was due. We artists are fans of other art and we have specific taste, and I knew I just wasn’t there yet. I would know it when I see it. And I won. I took what I learned on every film I’ve done since and has led to success every single time. It’s my secret formula. I worked in a screenplay for a 8 MINUTE short everyday for 6 months. It ended up winning Best Picture, Best Director, Best Cinematography, etc at my local film showcase. That’s all you have to do: just work harder than anyone and never ever be satisfied with you first few drafts of something, not even your first 20 drafts I’d say. It really does make the difference.
I think the important nuance is that you must have mastered the fundamentals before you can afford to procrastinate. If your foundation isn’t strong procrastinating will just make you a fool
It's the curiosity and the procrastination together that make an original thinker. I believe that during that process of curiosity, learning/failing, and procrastinating is the key to mastering it.

Procrastination does help boost creativity. I was writing my first draft for a story I'm working on, and while doing it I was pretty excited about it and made great progress. But the zeal that I started with slowly waned and I started procrastinating more and eventually gave up towards the end. However, I resumed it after a year of other works, and I got brand new ideas, which kept a few essences of my first draft but was otherwise completely different, yet so much more better, I had more idea, and more ways to frame them.
Also people don't realize the difference between original or good ideas and popular or money-making ideas. Really when people talk about 'failure' or 'bad ideas' they are often confusing the lack of popularity with a lack of merit. Also, someone who generates many ideas may have lots of good ones that don't become popular. That doesn't make them good ideas. AND, often the best ideas are passed over for inferior ones, just because they are easier to understand or popularize. There is a false belief that monetary success or popularity is equivalent to merit. This is not true. Understanding the differences can make it easier to achieve popularity/monetary success regardless of how 'original' or innovative the idea truly is.
That's just the tip of the iceberg... many ideas come without planning or action. Also some folks like to sabotage others' ideas out of jealousy or ignorance. The best organizations, in my experience, are those that create a fertile farm for ideas with merit.
I took great precautions to protect myself from my enemies but eventually I found out that my worst enemy was me. Lying to yourself can destroy you. Love these type of videos.

I am an original thinker and it is bloody hard work... I wrote a chapter of 14,000 words in ten days last month and scrapped it. It took me 12 attempts to perfect another chapter of 12,000 words... each time completing the chapter and scrapping it. I submitted my PhD thesis, successfully defended it in the viva, and started rewriting it with a different argument (aka a new thesis using the same data but with a different original argument). Seven years, and I predict my thesis will be complete in 2018. There are now students that I taught as first year undergrads who are graduating with their PhDs before me. The biggest problem with being original is that there is no other material out there that you are building on... or very little because what exists you have taken and moved it in a different direction. That has been the constant battle because my supervisors keep saying I need to show awareness of the field but I am pioneering the field and it has yet to catch up to where I am. It is easy having original ideas but it is difficult implementing them to a successful conclusion.
Correct, the easy route is small incrementalism. But, remember its the pathfinders that are referenced and become known as the originators of that field.
This episode could have been titled differently. It is not about being original, nor about trying many ideas, nor about any number of factors he mentioned. It is about Time! Speed is extremely overrated, unfortunately. But it is emphasized the most. Time assures Quality! It is why procrastination works. I learned that from a difficult project that engaged me for over 25 years. I am still on it. I asked myself a few years ago why I stayed with my project for so long, and why I did not get done with it years ago. At that point, I was even past rushing it. One word captured it all, which is why I believe this episode could have been titled differently. It is about letting ideas FERMENT! Once you plant an idea in your heads, let it ferment. Fermentation brings out the best. It means Clarity. It means Quality. And it will pass for Originality. Let things Ferment in your heads. Magic happens. Try it.

Hi, everyone! I'm reading Adam Grant's 'Give and Take', and literally, I've learned a lot. I highly recommend it to people who want to step up and do something on their own like bloggers, entrepreneurs, freelancers, startup founders etc.
When I was a kid my father nicknamed me "lazy Drew". He still has know Idea how I have thousands of alternative perspectives on virtually every topic that pops up in conversation. Turns out that my mind isn't very exciting to watch work but it's far from lazy. About 90% of my process is thought then I act suddenly. His observation was that I sit around doing nothing then rush thru it. What drives him crazy is that I do exceptional work this way. It's simple, I don't strangle my inspiration with waisted efforts. He's one of those practice makes perfect people, I'm always willing to risk absurdity. He thinks I'm absurd. We are pals but he would never take a job working with me.

never heard someone intricately explain my brain before lol. Used to get harrased and made fun of for being a procrastinator but my ideas have changed industries. I love the feedback button on websites cause i get an outlet for my creativity. All I do is sit back and enjoy the change I influenced and give myself a pat on the back for improving things for all.
I believe it was Isaac Asimov who developed a method of deliberately leaving a story for a while and letting his unconscious work on it. The unconscious thinks with a speed and complexity that the conscious ego can't keep up with.
I have read a creativity book by a person who works in ad agencies. The author, when starts to work on a project, would first think hard on the topic for hours, then go to work on some other things for some time, then maybe after a day or so, come back again on that project. I think he says this would allow his brain to unconsciously search for ideas in another field when working on something else. I believe that book is called How To Get Ideas.
Yeah this works. I'll often incubate a while, then go for a walk in the park, and 99% of the time my brain will come up with things I wouldn't have done staring at the computer screen.

The TED talk in one sentence for the average consumer: People who take their time and think about problems thoroughly come up with good ideas, but when you take too long it's more of a sign that you're slacking.
That's the same idea Jon Cleece mentioned about how to be creative. The creative people keep pondering upon the ideas and problems without jumping straight to the solution when being presented to them. They wait until the last minute to submit their ideas to keep thinking until they cannot think anymore.
Haha, I started an art business, in the great big holiday time. My home schooling turned out to be my kids and others, and I've had to take a step back while I steady the course. This is encouraging.
So its not necessarily procrastination, but perfectionism, not accepting it is ever good enough, but also realizing that you need to take breaks and think about it. There has been a study about the most effective way of learning. Turns out that you should only learn about a topic for an hour and then take a 30 minute to an hour break. This in turn allows you to refresh your mind and process what you have learned instead of having it sit and serve no purpose. It also allows you to come up with new ideas rather than just stick to one
I wouldn't say perfectionism. In many cases, perfectionism can be a curse. It's about improvement, not perfection. In some business, there is no room for perfectionism, because efficiency is much more important.
Perfectionism is a reasonable term for doubting the first idea and taking time to improve it but that was a different point from the one about procrastination. The point about procrastination is that parts of our brains we are not aware of work on problems that we have acknowledged even when we are not consciously thinking about them and sleep is important to that process. Most of us have probably had the experience of grappling with something and not finding the solution, giving up and going to bed and then waking up knowing the answer. That's why it is important to have an initial think through of the problem or idea and then get on with something else so it bubbles away in the background. What the speaker here is advocating is extending that process over a much longer time. It is also worth noting that among people such as musicians/composers, those at the top of the profession are never settled, always looking to be even better, but they do so my trying to make each performance or each composition better than the previous one. It's fatal instead to have a single masterpiece which you never show the world because there is always one more improvement to make.
I used to procrastinate on the important task of the day and do the smaller tasks first and realised that didn't have enough time to do the important stuff. For me personally, using the Pareto Principle has literally changed my life. Once you realise that 20% of your actions will provide 80% of the results you start to look at things from a different perspective.
You have no idea what you have just done my friend. You just gave every procrastinator (me) a reason to not study for finals. Excuse me professor, this wasn't laziness, this was originality. *scoughs*
I think it's important to recognise CREATIVE procrastination requires you to _start_ something but then take your time to complete it, as opposed to the typical kind of procrastination where you put off doing it until later, often until the last minute.
I once saw a child procrastinator, guess what she doing while the whole family was frantically serving customers, she was day dreaming of fairy tales. After repeated futile urging her father got angry, got a cane & disciplined her. After this episode, she dried her tears, went downstairs and helped. Procrastinating can be used wrongly by the 'Unoriginals' to be more lazy and deceptive.
I feel you need to get over the initial fear of starting and have a go. Then try another approach , and another etc. Each attempt at a solution will be an education. NOW I have a helper in this; I tell Chat GPT what I have tried and explain what I am not happy about and ask for suggestions for other ways to solve the problem. I look through the suggestions and try them. >> more education for me > gradually I get closer.

When I was architecture student I'd study about the project requirements therally, then do nothing for a long time, I'd dream up my solutions/designs and then develop concepts and final presentations, it was usually among the best. I think procrastination is not a factor, what matter is: how much time you've given to your subconscious mind to solve the idea before it being fed to your conscious self.
I remember I was a group leader and we were supposed to submit a System Simulation project. On the presentation day, I told my lecturer I didn't understand anything she had thought so far so I didn't do it. The lecturer got so mad because we actually didn't have a good start from the first day. Fortunately for me, the rest of the groups who submitted their project had to redo it again because it was so bad. On the day of presentation, I presented my groups work and she was shocked. We gave the best project and the best presentation.
Constraints and “Procrastination” are THE keys to creativity ... there is huge value to letting the subconscious mind work, and to letting pressure build ...

@@Andrewjames319 I figured out Mrs Lyra Holt From a TED show hosted by Adam Grant. He invited this particular woman and she introduced this fabulous type strategy for making money. It looked like a scam until we took the risk and tired it out and it worked.
I'm definitely a procrastinator. Not 100% of the time but let's say 90. I need a ton of time to be really sure I wanna start, I feel that after a ton of distraction the "important" task ferments in my head and gets better. It's risky though.

1 - Procrastination:
Moderate procrastination increases creativity (because it gives our mind/subconscious time to ruminate on the idea).
2 - Fear and doubt:
Fear and doubt are natural - embrace them.
Idea doubt is healthy, self doubt is not. Use idea doubt to help refine your ideas. Rough drafts suck for a reason. Keep trying.
Our biggest regrets are our inactions, not our actions. Instead of fearing failure, be more afraid of failing to try. People regret the things they never did more than the things they failed at.
3 - Lots of bad ideas:
In order to have lots of good ideas, you will probably have lots of bad ideas too. Be willing to fail... a lot. In most cases, more failure equals more success. You won’t be judged for your bad ideas.
Bonus:
To be original, you don’t have to be first, you just have to be different and better (first mover advantage is mostly a myth). Don’t accept the default, look for a better solution.

Oh yeah it took a great big effort for his contribution to Tensors for which he gets credit everywhere for his notation that an 8 year old could have come up with and that many people would have just naturally used (Tensor notation). He admitted to not being able to understand tensors, which is not as hard as learning differential geometry by any stretch. If that guy scratched his feet while doing physics he got credit for it. We can forget people who really came up with relativity but credit Einstein for the most insignificant things constantly.

A pro tip is to only do this on important projects or ideas you're working on, and stay diligent and tidy in everything else in your life - meaning be on time, keep a clean household, manage your finances. This way you free up mental space to work on idea generation without all the clutter of everyday life.

Its not procrastination itself, but rather "distracting" yourself with other physical or mental tasks that are mildly mentally challenging. Something thats distracting enough for the subconcious mind to wander off, make new connections and then you have the inspired idea suddenly appear. The classic example of this is finding inspiration in the shower.

The distraction can even by physical. I received an e-mail at work a few years ago with the subject "The Result of the Dog Walk". One of our designers had the IT equivalent of writer's block, gave up staring at the screen and took his dog for a walk. When he returned, the answer had come to him. A less enlightened company would have complained that is does not pay people to walk their dogs on the company time but fortunately that was not the case here.

This is true, my literature teacher gave an assignment on a passage we were reading , i prcastinated until the dawn of submition. So when i woke up in a frenzy remembering i had done nothing, I began to ask my 8 year old sister how she would feel if she was in the character's shoes, and with her emotions i wrote my work in a dialogue form instead of in a paragraph form and even submited the draft. It turned out i got the highest mark in that assignment because it was original and believable. I didn't even know what I was doing.

Necessity is the mother of invention. I often find myself leaving a task to the last minute and consequently having to engineer a method of completing that task in record time.
I'm not ashamed of doing this, either. It's a valuable skill.

I am full of bad ideas ...
I'm a musician and producer. I watched this video like one year ago and thought that you have to create a lot to generate a good idea but now I watched it again and I think I changed my mind. Currently I'm working in a studio that has a lot of big composers and producers coming and going and I've watched them work. How they create tracks out of nothing is with really simple ideas and they start to build on top of them. For example, you start with one melody in the Mellotron, simple, 8 bars, monophonic, and then you build a harmony on top. Then you switch sound and you make a new melody with a new rhythm and you rinse and repeat, I've seen guys do this for 30 minutes and after they have a HUGE and great sounding 8 bars, that now they can flesh out in a lengthier arrangement. I tested it and it works! It works because if you are not a crazy good instrumentalist you can play simple lines and then intertwine them together to make them work and have a super great idea at the end, instead of spending 2 hours trying to come up with something super original and getting frustrated for your lack of technical ability in guitar. In the end I think the 'bad ideas' talked in this video they are real for sure but the 'not so good' or 'not creative enough' can act as building blocks of the big idea, just keep writing and keep yourself in the creative flow.
Tha's great! I love hearing about when others inspire others! I'm not a musician by any stretch, but I've felt the same when I'm around my creative team members. But I realize that it doesn't have to be just my blocks that complete the building, but those of the entire team.
Fellow musician here, Flynx, suffered the same problem. Vuja De helped me very much. I don't post my music very often, but finishing it itself was a pretty hard task.

A HS art teacher of mine gave me one of the most important pieces of advice in my entire life... she'd see me frustrated with myself and my art piece and tell me, "you just haven't figured it out yet." When I've procrastinated on reading books, the content sticks better cause It has been marinated for longer in my brain.
I build stuff, usually something my wife wants. I move easily from #3 to #4 because of my depression. This simple idea that the first prototype will never capture the potential to be the best design has helped me so much. I look back and think, " Why did I ever think I would come up with the perfect design and engineering on the first try?" So simple, so helpful.
Many originals aren't even given the chance to express their creativity.They are already crippled and punished at school for characteristics (such as procrastination and many others) that, like it was said in the video, fuel creativity. Society rarely... never takes into account those unusual characteristics of those unusual creative people - its task is to destroy all those "dangerous" characteristics, putting forward what society calls "productivity" over creativity. And this makes sense since society is very focused on mediocrity, because mediocrity is the majority! Society caters for the needs of the many! NOT the few exceptional people. But even though originals are few, the new ideas they can put out into the world can literally transform it. So spotting and nourishing originality and creativity is of great value. Only we rarely do spot creativity let alone nourish it...Many exceptional and creative people have only been recognized long after their death. Truly exceptional and creative people don't really need society though... Nah... they are lost in their creative mind, in their art (the confirmation of their worth is made through their expression of the art they focus on, which is why they can bare and don't really mind about being considered outcasts). No they don't need society - society needs them.

When he started talking about how people who make more music are originals, it reminded me of something I learned while taking a class on photography: take lots of photos.
Yeah people make fun of you for the sound of the shutter constantly going, but having more photos to choose from will allow you more options for really good photos

Thank you for the best excuse to procrastinate that I've ever had. I'm so grateful, now whenever my professors tell me not to procrastinate (it happens a lot) I'll just send them this...
I learned this win I won $3,000 scholarship from a public art design competition out of a room full of fine artists, graphic designers, and illustrators- I was one of the only filmmakers. The thing that pushed me above was that I just never stoped designing and redesigning. When everyone else was already making their 3-D versions, I STILL hadn’t settled on my design and it was the last week before it was due. We artists are fans of other art and we have specific taste, and I knew I just wasn’t there yet. I would know it when I see it.
And I won. I took what I learned on every film I’ve done since and has led to success every single time. It’s my secret formula. I worked in a screenplay for a 8 MINUTE short everyday for 6 months. It ended up winning Best Picture, Best Director, Best Cinematography, etc at my local film showcase.
That’s all you have to do: just work harder than anyone and never ever be satisfied with you first few drafts of something, not even your first 20 drafts I’d say. It really does make the difference.

I think the important nuance is that you must have mastered the fundamentals before you can afford to procrastinate. If your foundation isn’t strong procrastinating will just make you a fool
It's the curiosity and the procrastination together that make an original thinker. I believe that during that process of curiosity, learning/failing, and procrastinating is the key to mastering it.

Procrastination does help boost creativity. I was writing my first draft for a story I'm working on, and while doing it I was pretty excited about it and made great progress. But the zeal that I started with slowly waned and I started procrastinating more and eventually gave up towards the end. However, I resumed it after a year of other works, and I got brand new ideas, which kept a few essences of my first draft but was otherwise completely different, yet so much more better, I had more idea, and more ways to frame them.

Also people don't realize the difference between original or good ideas and popular or money-making ideas. Really when people talk about 'failure' or 'bad ideas' they are often confusing the lack of popularity with a lack of merit. Also, someone who generates many ideas may have lots of good ones that don't become popular. That doesn't make them good ideas. AND, often the best ideas are passed over for inferior ones, just because they are easier to understand or popularize. There is a false belief that monetary success or popularity is equivalent to merit. This is not true.
Understanding the differences can make it easier to achieve popularity/monetary success regardless of how 'original' or innovative the idea truly is.
That's just the tip of the iceberg... many ideas come without planning or action. Also some folks like to sabotage others' ideas out of jealousy or ignorance. The best organizations, in my experience, are those that create a fertile farm for ideas with merit.
I took great precautions to protect myself from my enemies but eventually I found out that my worst enemy was me. Lying to yourself can destroy you. Love these type of videos.

I am an original thinker and it is bloody hard work... I wrote a chapter of 14,000 words in ten days last month and scrapped it. It took me 12 attempts to perfect another chapter of 12,000 words... each time completing the chapter and scrapping it. I submitted my PhD thesis, successfully defended it in the viva, and started rewriting it with a different argument (aka a new thesis using the same data but with a different original argument). Seven years, and I predict my thesis will be complete in 2018. There are now students that I taught as first year undergrads who are graduating with their PhDs before me. The biggest problem with being original is that there is no other material out there that you are building on... or very little because what exists you have taken and moved it in a different direction. That has been the constant battle because my supervisors keep saying I need to show awareness of the field but I am pioneering the field and it has yet to catch up to where I am.
It is easy having original ideas but it is difficult implementing them to a successful conclusion.
Correct, the easy route is small incrementalism. But, remember its the pathfinders that are referenced and become known as the originators of that field.

This episode could have been titled differently. It is not about being original, nor about trying many ideas, nor about any number of factors he mentioned. It is about Time! Speed is extremely overrated, unfortunately. But it is emphasized the most. Time assures Quality! It is why procrastination works. I learned that from a difficult project that engaged me for over 25 years. I am still on it.
I asked myself a few years ago why I stayed with my project for so long, and why I did not get done with it years ago. At that point, I was even past rushing it. One word captured it all, which is why I believe this episode could have been titled differently. It is about letting ideas FERMENT! Once you plant an idea in your heads, let it ferment. Fermentation brings out the best. It means Clarity. It means Quality. And it will pass for Originality. Let things Ferment in your heads. Magic happens. Try it.

I'm reading Adam Grant's 'Give and Take', and literally, I've learned a lot. I highly recommend it to people who want to step up and do something on their own like bloggers, entrepreneurs, freelancers, startup founders etc.
When I was a kid my father nicknamed me "lazy Drew". He still has know Idea how I have thousands of alternative perspectives on virtually every topic that pops up in conversation. Turns out that my mind isn't very exciting to watch work but it's far from lazy. About 90% of my process is thought then I act suddenly. His observation was that I sit around doing nothing then rush thru it. What drives him crazy is that I do exceptional work this way. It's simple, I don't strangle my inspiration with waisted efforts. He's one of those practice makes perfect people, I'm always willing to risk absurdity. He thinks I'm absurd. We are pals but he would never take a job working with me.

never heard someone intricately explain my brain before lol. Used to get harrased and made fun of for being a procrastinator but my ideas have changed industries. I love the feedback button on websites cause i get an outlet for my creativity. All I do is sit back and enjoy the change I influenced and give myself a pat on the back for improving things for all.

The talk itself was original. The presentation, the speech, the captivity yet the freedom, all great.
I believe it was Isaac Asimov who developed a method of deliberately leaving a story for a while and letting his unconscious work on it. The unconscious thinks with a speed and complexity that the conscious ego can't keep up with.
I ''brainstorm'' during my sleep. I actually make mt best stories after I get an idea during a dream.
I have read a creativity book by a person who works in ad agencies. The author, when starts to work on a project, would first think hard on the topic for hours, then go to work on some other things for some time, then maybe after a day or so, come back again on that project. I think he says this would allow his brain to unconsciously search for ideas in another field when working on something else. I believe that book is called How To Get Ideas.
Yeah this works. I'll often incubate a while, then go for a walk in the park, and 99% of the time my brain will come up with things I wouldn't have done staring at the computer screen.

The TED talk in one sentence for the average consumer: People who take their time and think about problems thoroughly come up with good ideas, but when you take too long it's more of a sign that you're slacking.

That's the same idea Jon Cleece mentioned about how to be creative. The creative people keep pondering upon the ideas and problems without jumping straight to the solution when being presented to them. They wait until the last minute to submit their ideas to keep thinking until they cannot think anymore.
Haha, I started an art business, in the great big holiday time. My home schooling turned out to be my kids and others, and I've had to take a step back while I steady the course. This is encouraging.

So its not necessarily procrastination, but perfectionism, not accepting it is ever good enough, but also realizing that you need to take breaks and think about it. There has been a study about the most effective way of learning. Turns out that you should only learn about a topic for an hour and then take a 30 minute to an hour break. This in turn allows you to refresh your mind and process what you have learned instead of having it sit and serve no purpose. It also allows you to come up with new ideas rather than just stick to one
I wouldn't say perfectionism. In many cases, perfectionism can be a curse. It's about improvement, not perfection. In some business, there is no room for perfectionism, because efficiency is much more important.
Perfectionism is a reasonable term for doubting the first idea and taking time to improve it but that was a different point from the one about procrastination. The point about procrastination is that parts of our brains we are not aware of work on problems that we have acknowledged even when we are not consciously thinking about them and sleep is important to that process. Most of us have probably had the experience of grappling with something and not finding the solution, giving up and going to bed and then waking up knowing the answer. That's why it is important to have an initial think through of the problem or idea and then get on with something else so it bubbles away in the background. What the speaker here is advocating is extending that process over a much longer time.
It is also worth noting that among people such as musicians/composers, those at the top of the profession are never settled, always looking to be even better, but they do so my trying to make each performance or each composition better than the previous one. It's fatal instead to have a single masterpiece which you never show the world because there is always one more improvement to make.

I used to procrastinate on the important task of the day and do the smaller tasks first and realised that didn't have enough time to do the important stuff. For me personally, using the Pareto Principle has literally changed my life. Once you realise that 20% of your actions will provide 80% of the results you start to look at things from a different perspective.

I think it's important to recognise CREATIVE procrastination requires you to _start_ something but then take your time to complete it, as opposed to the typical kind of procrastination where you put off doing it until later, often until the last minute.
I once saw a child procrastinator, guess what she doing while the whole family was frantically serving customers, she was day dreaming of fairy tales. After repeated futile urging her father got angry, got a cane & disciplined her. After this episode, she dried her tears, went downstairs and helped. Procrastinating can be used wrongly by the 'Unoriginals' to be more lazy and deceptive.
I feel you need to get over the initial fear of starting and have a go. Then try another approach , and another etc. Each attempt at a solution will be an education. NOW I have a helper in this; I tell Chat GPT what I have tried and explain what I am not happy about and ask for suggestions for other ways to solve the problem. I look through the suggestions and try them. >> more education for me > gradually I get closer.

When I was architecture student I'd study about the project requirements therally, then do nothing for a long time, I'd dream up my solutions/designs and then develop concepts and final presentations, it was usually among the best. I think procrastination is not a factor, what matter is: how much time you've given to your subconscious mind to solve the idea before it being fed to your conscious self.

I remember I was a group leader and we were supposed to submit a System Simulation project. On the presentation day, I told my lecturer I didn't understand anything she had thought so far so I didn't do it. The lecturer got so mad because we actually didn't have a good start from the first day. Fortunately for me, the rest of the groups who submitted their project had to redo it again because it was so bad. On the day of presentation, I presented my groups work and she was shocked. We gave the best project and the best presentation.

He invited this particular woman and she introduced this fabulous type strategy for making money.
It looked like a scam until we took the risk and tired it out and it worked.

I'm definitely a procrastinator. Not 100% of the time but let's say 90. I need a ton of time to be really sure I wanna start, I feel that after a ton of distraction the "important" task ferments in my head and gets better. It's risky though.
