Yeah lockdown is doing weird things to my motivation 😅 the panic monster is always lurking because I don't have a job at the moment to at least give me that end of day satisfaction. So gotta keep changing things up to stay sane 💁♂️😂
A big tip I can pay forward to fellow procrastinators: the first step I always do is promise myself I WILL NOT work on whatever my task is that day and ONLY do all preparation for it without actually starting work. This means I get everything I need ready, opening up tabs that I need to get the job done and planning out exactly what needs to be done to get it finished. Usually when I have it all laid out in front of me like that suddenly the task looks very small and manageable - and i then owe it to myself to complete on the task. This trick alone eliminates about 70% of my procrastination times. Kudos to Michael Kennedy's Success Method for this "mind trick" which works for me at least, I am working on the other mind hacks /gamifying to get my doctorate finished up
I try to apply the 5 minute rule. Just quick forcing myself to do things for 5 minutes and end uo doing it for hours. Just need to have the force kickstart.

@Anifco67 Sorry, i'll have to disagree with it. When you are a procrastinator, you are kind of perfectionist. Your mind wants certain, specific set up before it feels comfortable to do it. Also, one little discomfort in your task, can push you away from it, and it might take you months or years to come back to it. It's real, it happens.
Usman Saadat i can confirm. As a truck driver i want to follow my schedule. If im early ill do other things than i need to and if im late, even a minute im starving. I cant think of what the goal was then or where i was actually going untill i got it back on schedule or i forgave it. But its really hard
But you´ve gotta see the chance in that. If this feeling grows and grows it´ll maybe one day (hehe) give you enough energy to change things. Try to imagine yourself 5, 10, 15 years ahead if you dont make a change at all. Let that vision haunt you. If you manage to feel desire instead of resentment, you can do it.
"The frustration is not that they couldn't achieve their dreams, it's that they weren't even able to start chasing them" This quote is so true that it hurts my heart
Years ago, when I watched this vid for the first time, it resonated with me so much. Since I got my ADHD diagnosis a few weeks ago, this makes perfect sense. And now I am wondering how many undiagnosed ADHD-ers there are in this comment section.
I feel the same way, I left a comment a year ago saying as much too. It's so fucking sad, I'd wager something like 70% of the people here are not simply "procrastinators" but adults suffering from undiagnosed ADHD

Was assigned to watch this for school (college). Oh my gosh, this guy is SOOOOO ME!!!!!! I haven’t finished watching yet, but I am getting such a kick out of everything he’s saying! I can so relate. It’s always comforting to hear someone who understands. The struggle is REAL!!!!! Grateful for this video.
Truth! If he's anything like me, he was *gonna* do the mri thing, because it sounded like a cool idea a month earlier, but he kept procrastinating and suddenly there wasn't time to fit it in.😉
everyone’s talking about procrastinating while watching this and even though i am, i just realized i’ve had this in my watch tomorrow playlist for almost two years and this is the first time i’m watching it💀
I think many procrastinators also have an "all or nothing" type of mindset. We also analyze things and come to the conclusion that there are so many options of what we can do right now and in the near future that we end up not doing anything at all.
Me: School's out because of the coronavirus. Let's start doing some positive stuff for myself! Monkey: Nah we're just gonna watch videos on procrastination.
Facebooker syndrome. People only post about themselves when they are doing well. You don't hear people speak on their continual failures. They do their best to put their best foot forward and only show that side of themselves out of fear of ridicule or rejection or seeming unattractive. Quit measuring yourself against others. Measure yourself against yourself.
the worst part is the guilt demotivates you ,and you end up still not doing what needs to get done .this cycle for me never stops and I don’t know what to do.why can’t I just do my work.
As someone with depression, I've come to the point where I spend all my time in the dark playground, but I gain no joy or satisfaction whatsoever. The only reason why I'm still stuck in the dark playground is that getting work done is so stressful that I can't muster any motivation to even begin.
I have an assignment, but it says i have to watch it to answer qs. And now im bored since im not a procrastinator and this is time wasting so im watching this on 1.5/1.75x speed.
@@ericalagos5842 i mean regret lasts longer because you’re presently ignoring the work, it only goes away when you: forget, or finish the actual goal or work. However with discipline it can be done accordingly like once a day or once a week so the “pain” would be much less frequent and controlled, rather than an uncontrollable and messed up situation
right, and finally it is here, the panic monster...😱 "And that was the hint with the fence post." A masterpiece of psychology. If his career as a blogger does not works...
That part has no impact for those of us who are true procrastinators. Even with the ultimate deadline, the panic monster won't appear until a week before.........

This is such an interesting and relatable video for me. Yet I took a break after watching this video for 7-8 minutes and came back to resume it after 2 days
Procasinating is like digging your own grave, you know it's coming up, yet you do nothing to stop it, only think about how u would stop it, but never act on it.
Plot twist: he wrote this speech because he procrastinated so much and didn’t come up with other stuff and just talked his way out of it by telling why it happened. But he did it brilliantly
Currently undergoing exactly the same process as Tim writing his undergrad thesis, and now my gratification monkey navigated me to watch this video. Gotta submit my thesis in 10 hours or so, wish me luck bois
Excuses I make to myself when I procrastinate: "I'll have time later" (when I won't) "I'm still brainstorming" (When I've spent 75% of the project "brainstorming") "I'll start soon" "After I finish this game" "I'll just have a short break" "It's not that much work" "If it gets bad I'll request a due date extension" "I've earned a mental health break, I'll just do it in an hour" (When I've done nothing to earn a mental health break and I certainly know I won't do it in an hour) "I'm done with my homework" (When I myself know I'm not) I've even gone as far as to purposefully disconnect my internet or "lose" my school bag just to have an excuse to not do work. Why I lie to myself when I know it's a lie is beyond me, it's an unhealthy and stupid habit of mine but I can't get rid of it.
@@alexblackish-709 try writing it out of order. Feeling like writing the end? Do it. Middle? Good. Throw some words on page that should be there. Like if you are writing about whales add how big they are, but then go down a few lines and throw whatever you know about the topic. Make the page eventually look like a mess of disjointed uncoordinated thoughts. As it said in the Portal (game) "we are just throwing science at the wall and see what sticks". For some reason it works in writing. And now that you got the MESS, start clening up. Like... Are these facts necessary here? What if I move this over here? Eh, no? Okay, copy to separate file and back to main one. Etc. Eventually you get a set of nice boxes of thoughts that are not connected. Time to add "water" aka pointless words that function only as the glue between boxes. Is it a well written? Nope! But it works as you'll get more than "FAIL" for the paper. Btw, the junk file? Keep hyperlinks there at first with mentions of what you took. Will make adding "sources" section easier than by going to the browser and checking every page you visited. If I remember right, some old professors like when paper books are sourced. Warning, no wiki links, go through listed links in sources section and copy from there (if applicable). Hope this helps.
Oh I jumped right on it thinking I might get some tips on how to overcome it. But I'm old, ADD, and bipolar. I'm thinking I'm losing my memory. Like, sadly forgot how to make a sandwich. I was just stumped. Did I put the lettuce or tomatoes first. Got it wrong. But discovered the tomatoes move around less if you put the tomatoes on top. So I've clearly hit on something!!!!! However, I will tell my Dr about this next visit 😭🤣😂🙃🤣

Yeah, not many people are living in the present and are constantly worrying about what the future might be. Tim Urban is such a good speaker, specially with the clever trick in the end.
Freshman year: " I did my homework at like 11 last night" Sophomore year: "I did my homework the morning of" Junior year: "I did my homework before class" Senior year: "I did my homework during class and then told my teacher I just found it"

One of the best Ted talks out there. He’s so comfortable on stage, he knows how to control the crowd, and he’s very engaging the way he speaks. His content touches from humorous to serious, embedded with wisdom throughout. Well done Tim. Thank you.
I just wrote an essay on this ted talk and a lot of it was about the tonal shift so I'm glad to see a comment on here that acknowledges it, makes me feel validated and a little more ready to submit it so thank you
it indeed was a successful talk but I don't think he's comfortable. you just can catch it with his sentences, and his breathing is not normal, he looks totally uncomfortable to me, I've done talks in front of the crowd so I know the exact feeling of how your chest feels pressured and you can't breathe normally, leading to talking with an inner voice sometimes.
I watched this video many times. Until now, I still have struggled with this habit. Hope that, I can do better this year. Dont need to remove this habit, but I need to manage my time better.

I think many procrastinators also have an "all or nothing" type of mindset. We also analyze things and come to the conclusion that there are so many options of what we can do right now and in the near future that we end up not doing anything at all.
Indeed , there are so many things that we want to do but also can do that you only think about it but dont take the steps to do them.

@@ericalagos5842 i mean regret lasts longer because you’re presently ignoring the work, it only goes away when you: forget, or finish the actual goal or work. Excuses I make to myself when I procrastinate:
"I'll have time later" (when I won't)
"I'm still brainstorming" (When I've spent 75% of the project "brainstorming")
"I'll start soon"
"After I finish this game"
"I'll just have a short break"
"It's not that much work"
"If it gets bad I'll request a due date extension"
"I've earned a mental health break, I'll just do it in an hour" (When I've done nothing to earn a mental health break and I certainly know I won't do it in an hour)
"I'm done with my homework" (When I myself know I'm not)
I've even gone as far as to purposefully disconnect my internet or "lose" my school bag just to have an excuse to not do work.
