    I used to work at Wix Filtration Products in OKC. We made some part numbers for a lot of people. NAPA Fram Purolator Donaldson AC Delco ECT. We didn't make all of a particular brand. The main difference was the media(paper) and tap plate. And yes I realize our plant made mainly air filters but we were the divisions test lab.

      Thanks for the info. Do you remember all the brands WIX use to manufacturer for? Besides the ones you already mentioned? Did they make Supertech, Walmart’s brand?

      @@bundysgarage some of the Super tech. I stopped working for them when they left OKC for the east coast. Some of the brand's besides the ones mentioned were Air Refiner, Perry ( coolant filters) Deutsch, Mopar, Pennzoil, Motorcraft, and Lee. I'm sure there were others. I was the CNC machinist and worked in tool shop. For the record the main difference was the filter media.

    See my main comment. Just wanted to share a true story pertaining to KIDS when it comes to anything relating to the automotive industry: The VERY LAST TIME I ever used a quick-change oil station, ( and it was one of the few times ever ) in my town, was because it was part of the CASTROL franchise. I always kept Castrol 10w30 in my 2000 Toyota Tacoma 4x4 that I bought new. ( I still have this truck. With 330,000 miles on all original motor, drive train, CV joints, starter, alternator, etc. It still runs & drives like the day I drove it off the lot. ) I figured "what the heck" due to KNOWING they would use Castrol. But there was this KID down in the pit. He looked every bit of 17 yrs old to me anyway. ( I was about 40 at the time. ) So I get the truck serviced & leave. Very next morning, my entire concrete driveway was COVERED IN OIL. Boy was I PISSED. That kid was still there when I went back. That little punk tried to tell me to my face that "Oil drain plug threads NATURALLY STRIP about every 4th oil change"....and I'm not making this up!!! I about blew his head off when I started yelling & screaming at him. That boy was SHAKING when he ran for his boss. Come to find out, that punk dropped MY drain plug into a tray FULL of misc drain plugs, and he just grabbed one at random!!! He actually FORCED that damned plug into my oil pan. Come to find out, it was the oil drain plug from A CHRYSLER.....that he forced & cross threaded into my "Toyota". His boss paid to re-ream my drain hole 1 size over & corresponding new plug AND paid to have my driveway 100% cleaned. But he KEPT that kid. Even though the kid LIED to my face. It's one thing to SCREW UP.........but DON'T LIE TO ME about "how & why it happened". ( I've changed my own oil hundreds of times before I ever went there, and in every vehicle I ever owned. ) That was the LAST time I've ever used any quick-change oil service. They ALL lie like hell about "greasing all of your chassis" and "checking the lube in the rear diff", etc, etc. I've busted them all by standing in their parking lot about 20 feet BEHIND my vehicle. You can see right down in that pit. They didn't do ANY of those "included services" they claim for the price. But I FORCED them to get back down there & DO THE DAMNED JOB THEY CLAIMED. Today, NONE of them will allow you to stand in the parking lot to WATCH them in the pit. They claim "for insurance reasons".......even though dozens of people park their car & walk across that parking lot every day to ask questions in their office. Another time, they spilled SO much oil on TOP of my engine that when I stopped at the first red traffic light, the blue smoke billowed out so thick, NOBODY could see at that intersection....LOL!!! How EMBARRASSING. Yes, I went straight back. All of the above is why I never used those places very much, and then quit entirely. I could grease & change the oil on most anything when I was 10 yrs old. So I say to everyone: BEWARE!!! JUST DO THE SIMPLE JOBS YOURSELF.

    • @victoreous626
      @victoreous626 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I've only paid for an oil change once. That was in 1981 They put the wrong plug in my pan as well. Constant slow drip..... A neighbor took his f350 in for an oil change and they talked him into changing the rear diff fluid. They put a non LSD oil into a LSD diff. Starting slipping a day later so he took the truck to Ford. Kudos to ford in diagnosing the issue proper. They changed the fluid and he forced the lube shop to reimburse him. NEVER EVER will I pay somebody else to do such a simple task.

      I had a tire changed at a Wal-Mart TLE once. The tire they mounted was the right brand and type, but it was the wrong size. It was so big that it was rubbing the inside of my wheel well. I drove 100 feet or so and realized something was wrong. Those type of places don't hire the best and the brightest.

      Yup, like many others, I too have been burned on the rare instances that I entrusted service on my '87 Buick GN to someone other than myself. In one case, it was a Big-O store. I do 99% of my own work - even on major repairs, but on one occasion due to time constraints on a problem which developed midweek when my work schedule didn't afford me any time and I didn't have a running back-up car, I used Big-O for a right front ball joint replacement. Cpl days later on the weekend, as I was taking a corner at low speed and encountered a bump, my car suddenly collapsed on the right suspension and tire. Turns out, the tech failed to properly torque and then secure the ball joint castle nut w/ a cotter pin! Nut worked its way loose and the ball joint popped out of the control arm while driving. Cldn't believe it. And then the Big-O mgr was planning to compound the problem by installing used replacement parts to fix their mistake (when the car was only abt 3 yrs old at the time). I told him in no uncertain terms that he wld use new OEM parts verified by me or see me in court.
      On one other occasion when I decided to take advntg of an oil change special - at a Firestone shop, I believe - that was only going to cost abt the same as what the parts alone wld cost me not incldg my time, and figured 'how can they screw up an oil change?' - right? Well, they managed to loosen the center fitting the filter spins onto drg the change - so down the road the fitting w/ the attached filter worked loose and the car started hemorrhaging oil. Fortunately I caught it before the engine ran dangerously low. Now I just don't trust anyone to do work on my car (or my house) b/c I just can't trust them to do as good a job as I do (except in the very rare instances on specialty installs/repairs where non-franchise shops come highly recommended by multiple sources.)

    What does weight have to do with an oil filter's ability to protect an engine? Also, curious, why are the fiber end caps worse than the metal? Do you have some data to show that the fiber end caps are inferior? Or is this just conjecture?

    • @Z4Zander
      @Z4Zander 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Just conjecture.A lot of modern cartridge type filters have"cardboard' ends (Transit ,Ranger Fusion/Mondeo etc,etc) and the only real problem they have is gorillas either over tightening the screw on plastic cap or using the wrong tool to remove said cap and cracking them.Where I work we would average 20-25 oil and filter changes daily and the only rework problem we have had is leaking canister filters(usually Fram).

  • @terryzimmermann475
    @terryzimmermann475 6 ปีที่แล้ว +66

    The job of the filter is to filter out impurities in the oil - different filter material may filter out smaller (or larger) particle size. NOTHING done in this video compares the filtration properties or life of the filter. This comparison and others on TH-cam cutting the filters apart are worthless - ask the manufacturers for their test results! More filter area is not necessarily better if it passes larger particle sizes. I am sure validation testing was done on each design. Manufacturers do try to cut costs by changing the design and materials; however, I am sure these are validated to meet manufacturers specs. I know - I worked in Quality Control and Reliability for General Motors. This video is a waste of time!

      The Frams do look like crap in video with their construction. Having said that, I’ve never known anybody with a problem with them and I believe they filter to around 90% efficiency. If you
      look at a lot of OEM filters from Toyota and Honda, many of them don’t even have end caps, just a glued ring near the center to keep it together.

    We use FRAM HP-1 for endurance road (12 hours at a time) racing and have for twenty years. Everything that might work against it for a street car makes it a better racing filter. The Fram is lighter, has a less restrictive filter element while still doing a good (not great) filtering job, has a superior burst resistance in the HP-1 to the other filters (one of our main reasons to use it), and we change filters and oil often, so we don't have street use filter element disintegration.
    The stamped metal piece you think is acting as a spring is a brace supporting a flexible ring. The flex ring is the spring. Under pressure, the ring collapses and allows flow. No pressure, the ring expands back outward and the stamped plate stops flow, preventing drainback.
    I'd prefer a spring design, but the FRAM anti-drainback has never failed us, and we're a dry sump oiling system that would cause engine case overfill if we had drainback with the engine off and sitting still.

      Yup , a 1515 Napa is a 51515 wix.
      On a wix the first number designates it’s use.
      5 is motor oil
      3 is fuel.
      One clue to see if a filter is a rebadged wix is to know the wix filter number for the filter you are obtaining.
      Btw the 51515 wix is one of the most commonly used filter bases. Ford 2.3, 300, 460 uses em.
      A lot of Japanese and some euro cars use that base , but a smaller diameter.
      It’s the same base as a Briggs v twin also.
      Anyone using a wix 51515 should know there is a heavy duty 2 quart filter , wix number 51773.
      I use em on my Briggs.

    This is interesting because I have noticed over the last few years the quality of the Fram filters has gotten worse. The rubber gaskets tend to stay on the block and they are made in Canada or Mexico. I purchased a Super Tech filter from Walmart for my 2010 Camry at the last oil change. $2.84 vs $8.00 for Fram. I noticed the ST is made in USA. After 5000 miles I changed oil and filter today. Filter held together perfectly. I changed it out with another Supertech. One-third the price and made in USA with good quality made it a no-brainer...

    I understand that Wix makes filters for quite a few companies to their (not Wix's) specification. Now that he's got them all apart he might unfold the filter media and see how long it is between all the filters. Longer = more/better filtering I suspect.

    Well, to me, I have been driving since 1969 and in many times, I used Fram filters. I am currently using Fram on 1974 Toyota Celica. In the past, I tested using different types of Fram filters, some shorter, some wider, not even called for my vehicle. But with over 300,000 miles on it, engine never been rebuilt, I am getting around 155 in compression reading. I usually do not go by exactly 3,000 miles oil change schedule, but to me, actual color of the oil (how dirty the oil color is) more important due to acidity in oil, which is the main enemy for the engine. All different Fram filters I used so far, all seem to work just fine and I did not encounter any problems. I think the main thing here is that as long as you don't push your luck with the oil and change it + or - 3,000 miles and see if it is getting dirty, change it, don't push your luck. Then just use any reputable oil filters as long as specs (such as drain valve, Relief valve pressure, flow rate, microns and other specs are similar) to the correct filter for the car is the same and fitting is the same. Dimensions did not matter to my car as I had done many years. Why pay so much more for extended or super filters if you are going to change it at or around 3,000 or whenever oil starts to get dirty with acid build up? You are just wasting your money for paying extra and hoping it will last 20,000 miles before the oil change.

How are you goning to tell which filter destroys your engine, because of this video? I pull the valve covers off at four hundred and fifty thousand miles to change my valve cover gasket and you could eat off the inside of that engine the cam lobes were beautiful they all miked perfect so again you want to try and argue with that nothing but Fram Baseline oil filters the proof is in the pudding not in taking filters apart how the motor look inside that's the answer!

    Wix XP is an all synthetic media with no paper (cellulose fibers). That's the major difference. It's designed for longer term use, as well as for high capture and low flow resistance. It's glass fibers mean that it can last for significantly longer than any paper media.

    To be safe, just buy a Purolator standard oil filter. If you want the best, Buy a mobile one oil filter.. The weight of the housing or of the filter assembly isn’t a true test of quality. What’s the bypass element made of? Cardboard? Or rubber? How restrictive is the filter element? Does it have a backflow preventer? Don’t forget to oil the meeting gasket surface, fill the oil filter before you put it on the car so there’s not a lapse in time before you build oil pressure, don’t forget to clean the threads in the filter before you install it,because it has thread cutting debris in the threads

      Amsoil prescribes that you use their filters and change them regularly and add more oil.

    • @PatriotPaulUSA
      @PatriotPaulUSA 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@bundysgarage They use a much more advanced filter element and the best components, all silicone anti drainback valves, (cheaper filters use rubber)better springs and heavier cans, etc. The white element in the XP is a synthetic filter element and therefore has a higher mileage/change rating than the regular Wix Which is a cellulose blend and fine for less mileage . The XP element is kinda similar to the Amsoil but a tad lower efficiency/ micron rating Which means the size of particle that can pass thru. These can hold much more matter before clogging as well. They also recommend Amsoil full synthetic oil which is like night and day compared to conventional motor oil. I have used Amsoil or else a Mobil 1/Royal Purple filter full synthetic and both made by Champ labs in the usa and full synthetic Schaeffers motor oil and have for decades and have gone 20,000 miles on oil changes and have torn the engine down many years later with nearly 0 apreciable engine wear but you could never do this with regular oil or filters. I generally go 10-15,000 between changes usually just to be extra conservative myself lately tho. Champ makes tons of filters for tons of customers each made to different specs tho. The Mobil /Royal Purple are their best imho. The only thing better is a Amsoil but by very little. (Its totally their exclusive element material)

Every time I hear the same Fram story it is tiring. You need to run filters on vehicles and test them for filtration efficiency. You can also run an oil analysis before and after using the oil filter. In reality cars are not falling apart every day because someone used Quaker State Oil and a Fram filter VS. Valvoline Oil and a Wix.

    My family used Fram for years and years with millions of miles. The motors were always fine. Change it regularly.

    Interesting video. I recently installed a sbc crate engine. Did some oil filter research. Finally decided on the standard wix filter. The wix xp is considered a race filter. The standard wix actually captures smaller diameter particles of material compared to the wix xp. Wix xp captures larger diameter particles. So for the daily driver...the standard is superior. Race filters and oil is changed more often than a daily driver and small particles are not a concern. Whereas daily drivers filter and oil are not changed near as often as race equipment. Therefore...smaller particles are a concern to a daily driver. And because of the particle size capture is why the two wix filters weigh differently. The filter media are different between the two wix filters. Having said all that...the standard wix is cheaper than the xp....woohoo! Winner winner.

    Dont become an oil freak just change your oil and dont try to read to much into products or oils. Im starting to think oil freaks hace a real mental problem. Spending so much time reasearching wats better or wats bad. Stocking up on oil when its on sale or clearance. Getting offended when someone tells you you are using the wrong filters etc. Just change your oil regularly and you will be ok

      I agree that there's plenty of hyperbole flying around, but why criticize the desire to verify the effectiveness of a product? If you painted your house and the paint didn't last, would you ignore the experience and keep painting with the same product? Observation is a requisite part of learning. Putting blind faith in ritual and marketing hardly sounds like good advice in general.

    FYI, toilet paper rolls were used on vehicles in the 30’s & 40’s as oil filters. Seems the filters have not improved much.

    • @x-man5056
      @x-man5056 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      There is by-pass valve in most engines that lets oil flow when filter is clogged. You can't seriously believe oil can flow through a toilet paper roll as easily as a proper filter element. People used to believe that smoking was healthy also.

      Frantz bypass oil filters, I believe they're still sold! Work best with good old family scott toilet paper, too. No fancy stuff, you need just regular single ply paper. Some companies sell these as miracle, never change oil again filter kits. Don't believe it! Modern engines in some cases have variable or low flow pumps and cannot handle extra pressure bleeding off the supply! Had one of these clowns who sold these bring his chevy HHR (the PT cruiser ripoff) in, he was showing how well his miracle oil filter worked, and managed to destroy his engine by starving the bottom end. Beware!

    check the paper all by itself for flowability and particulate matter that goes through it like a coffee filter versus a paper towel versus toilet paper that type of test which paper filters the most and flows the easiest

    Fram was doing a lot better in the 90s when nobody cut the filters open and put them on blast on social media. Lol. Why would I want any cardboard attached to my $8, 000 motor. Lol. No thanks. Oil filters definitely aren't something to skimp on. If You want to skimp, skimp on your windshield wipers or your car wash soap.

    Is NAPA Gold really a WIX? It filters to smaller micron size. NAPA Platinum is for synthetic oil. Pry has longer design life?
