      I have one. Like the 7, they came with no effects, no arpeggiator, no sequencer. The 5 is much more than just two 7s. Better converters, higher quality all around. Effects add a great deal, though. The synth can be surprisingly warm if you program it right.

      I don't believe there was ever a DX5 in module form. Are you perhaps thinking of the TX7 (which is a DX7 module not a DX5 module) or perhaps the TX 216? The TX 216 was about as close as you could get to a DX5 in rack mount form as it was essentially two DX7s, which is what the DX5 is.

    The best of FM synthesis at its best, the new Yamaha Montage doesn't even come close to this monumental sound!

    • @KUPHSER
      @KUPHSER ปีที่แล้ว +1

      As much as I love the dx5, these classic fm sounds sound better on a montage. Montage has much more polyphony, and can layer multiple 8operator fm patches.. that combined with optional effects, filters, and samples will make for much more thick and rich sounds.
      Dx5 is one of the most beautiful fm synths of all time but technically the montage can top these sounds with ease

  • @pierstheoneandonly
    @pierstheoneandonly 7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    In the context of these retro-future, synthwave, etc music styles which are a thing, I think it worth saying that despite the Wiki entry on this, it was digital synths like the Yamaha DXs, PPGs, and Ensoniqs rather than analogue which defined the 80s. As a Sound On Sound senior writer memorably commented, analogue instruments are essentially one sound - or variants of a brassy sound.

    • @Roboprogs
      @Roboprogs 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Digital (FM / sampling / additive) - definitely 80s sound.
      But "analog = brass/saw"??? I'll see your filter sweep and raise you a pulse width modulation if that's all the sounds people did with analog in the 70s/80s.

  • @autumnbrushtail
    @autumnbrushtail 6 ปีที่แล้ว +8

    To all the people complaining about modern FM synths not sounding like the older ones: it's a fool's errand to try to replicate the old sound exactly. Even if they were to use very similar hardware to what was originally used back then, there will always be some discrepancies between them. The best we can do is very minor differences between the new and old and if you're *really* complaining about that, you're being petty and rather shallow. You're welcome to praise the older synths by all means, but bashing the newer ones for "not being the same" honestly sounds dumb to me. Just enjoy music for what it is and remember: Composition and the actual music is what carries a sound, not the sound itself. A well designed patch can only go so far if it's not well played.

    • @HavenMarches
      @HavenMarches 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Agreed. If you want the sound of an older synth then just- like- get an older synth. Most aren't too hard to come by. Furthermore, some new synths sound incredible. Korg has been hitting it out of the park with their new lineup.

    • @PakaTheDog
      @PakaTheDog 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Um. No. Sound is everything. Be it old or new. For instance, I prefer classical recordings that feature quality/unique, real instruments. Or consider this... When I wake up in the morning, usually i hear a chorus of songbirds (I live in the country). Occassionally, a murder of crows show up and spoil my dreams. That's when I reach for my shotgun lol. Whether it's FM, analog, or cheesy electronics - we are drawn to sound. Otherwise it wouldn't matter who sang what, where or how for anything ever written. Food for thought. Peace ☺

    I have the DX7 MK1, but I haven't seen the DX5. Having two DX7 in one, does that mean it's 32 polyphony? From 1:42, was layering used to create strings sound?

    • @cgereu
      @cgereu 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, it Has 32 voices of polyphony and 16 when you layer or split voices.

    • @powerdx7383
      @powerdx7383 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      So it double the polyphony of the DX7 II, TX802 etc.

    • @cgereu
      @cgereu 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes exactly. But if you have two TX802's you can chain them together and get 32 voices of polyphony. It's a really cool feature of TX802. Plus you can stack 8 sounds together with TX802 and you get 8 separate outputs. So I have DX7 II FD controlling two TX802's that are chained together for 32 voices. I can have some nice & crazy multis going. TX802 are still really cheap and they are usually in really great shape, so it's worth grabbing a couple of them in addition to DX7 II.

      About 3,500-4000 DX5s were made. About 180,000 DX7s. The DX9 was much less expensive than the DX7 but never sold anywhere close to as well. Because the four-op engine was not nearly as capable as the six-op. Yamaha hit the bullseye with the DX7 in terms of price, market timing, value for money and looks. The 5 was unquestionably a superior instrument, but its price limited its popularity.

      Good luck on that DX1. Only 140 ever made. Check out the Synth Wizards You Tube episode on how the folks at Syntaur went on a quest to locate one for a very well-heeled client who happened to have founded the world's most successful on-line music retailer....you kind of need those kind of resources to bag a DX1... but we can dream...

      DX5s are out there in the used gear market, but they are relatively rare and therefore not cheap. Expect to pay at least $2500-3000 (and about 5 or 6K for one as nice as this one.) As far as the DX1--haha--Good luck! At LEAST $50,000 (more like a hundred grand) IF you can find one. There's a great video in Syntaur's "Synth Wizards" series about their quest to locate a DX1 for a very special (and wealthy) customer.

    I’m usually more on the analog side of things. The DX-7 always sounds somehow thin to me. But the DX-5 is absolutely gorgeous. I guess ‘layering’ is the magic word.

    • @rockintetster
      @rockintetster 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I owned a 7 along with a TX7 module which gave you the same capabilities as a DX5- except with 61 keys instead of 76. I then went out and bought a KX88 controller keyboard. The problem with the DX5, (and also the DX1for that matter) was that you couldn’t find them. Where were they? I never saw them for sale in any music store. I guess you had to special order them, they were frightfully expensive in their day.

      My Yamaha FS1R has 16 Operators... and seven added harmonic waveforms over just a Sine wave. It's also 20 bit sound over the DX7 12 bit sound. I'm not sure what the DX5 was. Nice machines, though.

      The dx5 is a 6-op synth but I believe it's x2 which is why it's a bit thicker than the DX7... But there's something else about it too. Perhaps they used better components. Beautiful machine.

    Is there anything better than the good old DX5? I've been trying to achieve the same result by using two Dexed plugins simultaneously, one loaded with the A bank and the other one with the B bank (each sound was composed by two patches which were the same instrument but one was slightly different than the other)

      looneyburgmusic I have the TG-77 .. the rack mount version of the SY-77 .. I'd trade it and some cash for a DX-5 in heartbeat! Except maybe for the Roland Jupiter 80 (and some boutiques) the build quality of modern synths pales in comparison to the 80's synths like this beautiful DX-5. Wondeful demo👍

    • @therealniksongs

      It's two DX7 engines, has 76 keys instead of 61 (same FS action, though) but has a much better interface, largely inherited directly from the DX1, and high quality DACs so even the same patches sound much better on the 5.
