    The DX-1 was the quietest (less hiss) of the 1st DX series. I had a DX-5 which was the same as a DX-1 without polyphonic aftertouch, weighted keys, or balanced outputs. It was a lot noisier than the DX-1 and a little noisier as the DX-7 but that was because there were two of them but aside from hiss, it was smoother sounding. It might have had better converters. I also had the TX rack with the full x8 TF-1 modules. The TX series hissed the most because there were 8 DX-7s and they didn't sound as smooth as the 5. The DX-1 is still the cleanest sounding DX first gen and it was probably just because it had a killer opamp analog mixer section but IDK. It just was. The cleanest sounding DX today is a good VSTi version. I haven't used the new UVI but I've used older emulations and I was impressed.

      @Hallkardia 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I have a TX816 and it's much quieter than my DX7. Also, it got individual outs for every module. I don't see why it would increase that much in noise if you just use 2 modules, like in a DX1 or DX5.

    • @gilwe

      I heard, that people who made modifications against the hiss, noticed, that the sound was changed.
      Sometimes better specifications does not mean, that the sound is better.

    • @CharlieRiceMusic
      @CharlieRiceMusic 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      You're right about the hiss. I still have my DX5 (and still in new condition - thanks Yamaha), but it was plagued with those noisy 12 bit converters, doubled. I adjusted a parametric EQ just so to shelve the noise considerably, then programmed my patched brighter to suit. It helped a lot.

      “Where I Belong” from the BB’85 album is a stunning song and an excellent example of the Beach Boys’ use of the DX1. I believe Brian and Carl both played it on that track, and there was also a PPG Wave and a Fairlight...and that was it for the instruments. Not a single non-electronic instrument. Think it is a memory chip or battery that has gone. There is a video on YT with someone who has a DX100 with same sort of problem I think. Watch this it might give you a lead to fix it: th-cam.com/video/yDmuYG9UZLY/w-d-xo.html

    7:01 I know this sound type from childhood. But it had less trombone/brass sound. What is going on there? Does it have "a name" or description so I can research more?

      You don't must to dream so much! You can buy a dx7. The sounds are practically the sames.

      A good way to duplicate DX1 capabilities on the cheap is a DX7 and one or more TX7s. Adding more polyphony and/or layering was the original purpose of the TX7, and they’re super cheap today because the user interface is terrible unless you have a DX7 as a controller.

    • @mariorossi303
      @mariorossi303 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@chriswalton720 These are super cheap because Yamaha produce so manies dx7s in the past. But the dx1 are so little. I read yamaha produce just only around 140 pieces in total! So you can imagine the motif of the high dx1 price. I think it is for sure a luxury double version of the dx7, with wood sides, a bigger keyboard and more functions but the motor synthesis is practically a 2xDX7. Nothing more! :) So if you are looking for that dx sound, try to look at the dx7. If you want the object, the phisical, the real thing dx1, this is another story! And I can understand you. But that's just a dreaming synth. Just for VIP and superstars, or for rich people. Anymore, i can say you i m happy with my real "poor"dx7! ;)

      @@mr.dervish4655 Actually, it’s not a cutdown version, but a completely different one, but the general concepts are the same, yes. The same completely identical synthesis algorithm and similar functions. All FM synthesis in the Yamaha implementation sounds similar (AdLib/Sound Blaster sound cards, early PSR keyboards, japanese home computers, DX100, Sega Genesis, TX81Z, DX7, DX1 and many others), the main difference in sounds is just the number of operators (but not only).
      YM2612 is actually a variation on the YM2151/YM2164 (was in the DX100, DX21, FB01, arcade machines, some japanese home computers, etc.). YM2151 is a single-chip iteration (unlike the system in DX7, where was two chips - YM21280 (operator chip) and YM21290 (envelope chip)) and it has a completely different envelopes (according to the basis of the work), also there are many other differences, but they do not directly concern the architecture itself.
      To understand the real difference between DX7 and the usual classic 4Op-synths - listen to DX9 and compare it with Sega Megadrive or DX100. DX9 has exactly the same filling as DX7, but it's only programmatically trimmed to 4 operators.

    Dr. Mix, with two DX7s crammed into one mixing desk sized keyboard, this is capable of putting out unreal ambient sounds, you should hold on to the board for a couple of days and do another show of sweeps pads and ambient sounds
