Some of those glissy brass stab patches are present in the dual DCO JX-8P I think Roland was trying to coax FM sounds out of that particular synth... worked okay

It's the 80's in a box... I heard every single one of these sounds a million times.. It brings back memories for sure... what an incredible piece of engineering..😊
No. It is a part of the 80:s for parts of some categories of music. The 80:s was also very much about true analog Synths combined with the classic Linn Drum machine sounds with a gated reverb on the snare. Also later on very much sampling. To me the analog Synths and the snare with gated reverb on it is really much about the 80:s. The Juno sound. Or the Jupiter 8. Yes, the DX7 was good for what it was when it was released. But totally overused sounds in middle of the road 80:s pop and, especially, Ballads (That Rhodes sounds). It can do so much more, like Brian Enos Ambient recordings. Or some basses in the "lately bass" (Solid Bass on the DX7) territory that were really good. The DX7 can be good if used sparsely on some Synth pop if you "sprinkle it here and there". Yes you can do stringpads and stuff like that in the "warmer category" of sounds if combined with the right effects. It is just that there are other Synths, mainly analog at the time, that do it better. The more atmospheric digital pads that evolve somehow, or are kind of "choir-like" in some styles are more effective!
People that call dx7 "trash" are stupid af! We all know the presets was overused in a way that makes some sounds "dated" but the synth itself is a master piece, unfortunately it was just to hard to program to create new timbers back then, but who dominate this beast, has unlimited power. I don't have a dx7 but I play with a volca fm (that is based on the dx7) and it's a glimpse of what fm synthesis is capable off.
The YMDX7 it's self is an amazing beast, but the synthesizer they made for it was kinda bleh, FM synthesis was already difficult with all the math n stuff behind it and the way they made the synthesizer didn't help with that. The YMDX21 or YMTX81Z was where it was at personally. Still tho, DX7 is a timeless synth that will always be great
That legendary DX7 synth bass can also be heard on "Man in Motion" - John Parr, "When I think of you" - Janet Jackson, "Another Part of Me" - Michael Jackson, "Danger Zone" - Kenny Loggins, so many more...
Really??? The Fender Stratocaster 1954 to present day covering every genre of 'non classical' music: rock n roll, ska, funk indie, punk, classic rock, metal, glam, folk rock, jazz, prog rock, disco, reggae, etc etc etc. Copied by every guitar manufacturer, the very stylistic definition of what an electric guitar looks like. The Yamaha DX7 1983 - 1989 covering electro pop, dance and hair metal until it became as unfashionable as slap bass and gated snare drums. Fun to program though.
No it was a horrid and overused abomination in the 80s thank god analog synths have returned and now dominate again. Too thin and cold for me give me a Moog, Oberheim or Prophet any day over this noise box

Thanks! Back in the 80's people were just using the DX7 for e.piano, slap basses, bells and metallic sounds. It can actually do more than that, form thick and fat analog-like sounds to 16 bit sampler-like strings, choirs and brass etc!
You made the right choice. You just can't beat the real DX7 MK1 bass sound. It's so deep and fat, and with velocity, you can control how much metallic tone you want to have in your bass sound.

@Mee Omi Nope, it’s multi-frequency signaling. It does use two sine waves at different frequencies to create each DTMF tone, but no sine wave is frequency modulating another sine wave.
@@peterldelong It's Phase Modulation. The DX7 uses Phase Modulation. Casio bad a similar system at the same time called Phase Distortion. FM Synthesis was present on analogue synthesisers way back in the 60s.
Yes, the DX7 factory patch bass I used in Mr Mister Broken Wings and Howard Jones Pearl In The Shell is only a few original DX7 patches that I like. It can be metallic, yet powerful.
I am, was a lead guitar player for various travelling bands until the early 2000's. I also used to read many articles in several magazines about electronic keyboards and there was a time when so many comments about the Yamaha DX7 that was criticizing it for being maybe overused in many recordings. I thought, maybe, a few more keyboard users have gotten tired of the DX7 sounds or they might have moved on to some other newer models, at the time the Korg M-1 was gaining popularity. Anyway, I never lost my love for the sound of this very fascinating instrument. Even though i was a guitarist, first and foremost.
DX’s have a kind of hollow, thin empty sound that grew old and dated fairly rapidly. But FM synthesis certainly has its place in the electronic pantheon. I’ve listened to old 80s tapes of my DX and I’m amazed at the complexity of the sounds. There’s a lot going on under the hood
It is indeed. Thanks for responding back. I was very young when it came out, only 3 years old but I was an extremely musically sensitive child with my earliest memories and feelings in life representative in these songs. I remember hearing this song in particular while driving through old semi-abandoned industrial areas of town near our house at the time. The eerie glow of the mercury street lamps around those areas at night seemed to represent the vibe and atmosphere I hear and feel in this song perfectly. That Pad synth sound. I suppose it's the way my young impressionable mind put everything together. Almost feels like a lost memory of something more powerful that I can't quite put my finger on. Great job on this video! It's so nice to see these instruments like the DX7 as an adult that had such a huge influence on my emotional development as a young child.
People experience sadness and despair, but like this song, there is a hope and dream that take us to the next level. It's an emotive and uplifting song. I love this song very much and I'm very happy growing up in the 80's. And I'm happy that I could re-create this song using only my DX7 MK1!! I don't hear a song like this nowadays, shame.....
I just got a Prophet 08 that has a "Broken Wings" preset. It's an analogue synth and they recreated the bass & string sound (key split) surprisingly well.
Most knob twiddlers hate the DX7 because they can't just turn on the arpeggiator and wiggle the cutoff knob. If you can actually play keyboards and have a chorus pedal sitting around somewhere, you can get some incredible sounds from it. The sounds were so much more expressive than anything else from that era, too. Per-operator velocity, aftertouch, tremolo, and vibrato response was unheard of in the 80s, and every time I hear a good keyboardist playing one I'm still blown away.
Thank you. I put a lot of efforts in making this DX7 demo video, making sure that all songs are faithfully created as much as possible using the DX7 only. And thank you for subscribing to my channel. Cheers, Power DX7.
Mr Mister is so freakin good. They have so many incredible songs that you've never heard, highly recommend checking out every song from their four album discography.
Took me years to finally get my hands on a DX7. Found it under junk at a second hand store. So now I have the DX7, DX27, DX100 and a bunch of Casios. Then I found a program that emulates the damn things called FM7 (and later FM8) and they all became instantly redundant.
I discovered this video as a sponsored advertisement which appeared before the music video I wanted to watch. I enjoyed your demo so much, that I actually listened to it until the end, then closed my browser, and completely forgot to watch the actual video I first came here for.
I'm speechless!!!!!!! I'm really glad that the 80's hits video is great, great enough that you forgot to watch the video that you were supposed to watch!!!! Feel free to share and tell your friends about this video. Thanks for the great comment! I hope that you had a great Christmas and a Happy New Year!!!
The same here! I never forget the first time I heard Van Halen 1984 & Jump on a radio back in 1984 or 1985. It had that scary and dark feel with OB-Xa filter sweep and that beautiful sawtooth strings/pad. I love how Howard Jones used the DX7 and Jupiter-8 to create great bass lines!
I spent a couple years in the 80s menu-diving a DX trying to come up with good sounds, only to find out 20 years later everyone just used the default patches.
such a joy to see and hear all this! makes me want to just get my factory banks back. in my basement they dont sound so good on their own and then you realize where that fits right in. helps put perspective in that any patch can be usable really. just needs to be iconic AND simple is best.
Yamaha DX7... For me this was a long time a very boring synth 'cause everyone was just using the factory patches. Much too complex to program due to the poor user interface and the complexity of the FM synthesis. But once you dive into this synth and take your time to understand how things are working, you can give it kind of a second life as your videos are showing. Wow, I'm deeply impressed about your custom made patches! Looking forward to hear even more great demos from you. You should really think of offering your patches for a small fee! Thanks again for your vids!
Can't blame you. On TH-cam everyone is doing DX7 videos on those overused factory patches. I'm trying to educate people in the world that the DX7 is far more capable than those overused and uninspiring factory patches.
Thanks for your positive comments. I uploaded the epic 80;s digital synth demos, with Yamaha DX7, Roland D-50 and Korg M1. You can definitely see how capable the DX7 is even without sampled waveforms. th-cam.com/play/PLS1dRgO-URANx7za-G2Rr2nNXgg1P6S6B.html
So true!! The DX7 capability was misrepresented to the world back in 1983. Once samplers became cheaper and hybrid synths became available, like the D-50 and M1, the DX7 is kind of lost its edge.....
By that logic, then every synth in the entire World is boring just because many people uses factory patches. It isn't a synths fault if people uses a overused factory patches rather than making own. Blaming a synth by Calling it boring because many people uses factory patches is a kind of idiotic reasoning. Thats like saying photoshopping or game programming is boring just because there is some people who copy others contents rather than making a own content. Wouldn't be surprised if you Thinks DX7 is boring because of the fact that you can't program for shit and rather uses today dumbed down synths that any uncreative moron can use.
Do you have your favourite 80's song in this 80's hits video? 1. Berlin, Take My Breath Away 2. Europe, The Final Countdown 3. Rush, The Big Money 4. a-ha, Take On Me 5. Howard Jones, Pearl In The Shell 6. Pink Floyd, Terminal Frost 7. Madonna, Open Your Heart 8. Mr Mister, Broken Wings 9. Mr Mister, Kyrie 10. Peter Gabriel, The Family And The Fishing Net
Imagine having one of these and a basic 4 track recorder in the 80’s. You literally have an entire band! Idk if some of the instruments require stereo, then you’d only have 2-3 instruments.
I remember first seeing this wonderful work of musical art back in 1985 it was so different from everything I have ever heard up to that point still a amazing synth
Hi Woody, thanks for the positive comment. I'm glad that you enjoyed watching the 80's hits recreated by the DX7 MK1. Yes, the DX7 is really versatile, it can produce sounds from fat and thick analog sounds to sampler like sounds. It's all to do with its FM synthesis, the possibility is endless!!
people often say the digital dx7 sound thin and cold compared to the analogues that it made obsolete, but in my experience, it sound punchy, warm and thick!
That's so true. I think when the DX7 was released in the 80's, people wanted something different from analog synths so they made sounds plasticky and shiny as opposed to what analog synths produced (fat and thick sounds). FM synthesis is great for creating a wide variety of harmonics/ inharmonious, so people wanted more metallic tones than what analog synths could produce (except for the famous DX7 BASS 1 which is just as fat as analog bass). That's probably one of the reasons why people have this fixed view of the DX7 which is only good for e.piano, bells and plastics and shiny sounds. That's unfortunate.
80s greatest hits & synths sounds lovers... Watch it ! Hat off & thanks for this highly delightful moment, performed on the DX7 with your tremendous personal sounds... Excellent weekend to you & keep sharing these jewels ! ;-))
Thanks Synth Colors. I wanted to makes sure all the DX7 sounds and song arrangements are top quality!!! This is my finest DX7 demo video, faithfully re-creating those 80's hits and ground breaking songs!!!
It was used in Probably 90% of videos from it's invention for about 10+ years. It was used in 100% of business training video backgrounds in the 80s & 90s
The DX7 is probably the most important synthesizer ever produced. It was the first FM synthesizer and totally revolutionized music. It's a huge part of music history.
Hi Icaise, thank you for watching the 80's hits re-created by the DX7 MK1 only. I have a lot of tutorial videos for you to watch. For beginners, you can start with this playlist, explaining FM synthesis in a very simple manner. th-cam.com/play/PLS1dRgO-URANOAowrDTFgyts-ZZglzKr4.html Then you can watch this playlist to learn more about the DX7 and its FM synthesis and at the end, you get to make new DX7 Tube Bells!!! th-cam.com/play/PLS1dRgO-URANU1sKzJr52gzmuoGkYsA2v.html After that, you can try learning about sound design of DX7 electric pianos and you get to create new DX7 electric pianos based on the famous E.Piano 1 and FullTines!!! th-cam.com/play/PLS1dRgO-URANdlQehPWfsg7LWzPx62NeI.html I think those tutorial videos will give you tones of great info to get you started in learning the DX7 and FM synthesis. Enjoy, Power DX7!
Anyone who complains about programming on this- get patch base and you can not only create entire libraries of sounds and import/export at the touch of a button, but you can also edit the sounds at the touch of your iPad in real-time, change algorithms etc. One of the greatest synths ever.
Sorry, this is long... Being a synth player from back in the analog days to FM to current "soft synths, recording commercially licensed music.. it's awesome hearing you play all of those songs. I had a DX100 back in the day.. I should of never sold that. When I "Take my Breath Away" by Berlin... that DX7 Bass line wow.... I INSTANTLY get transported back in my mind to "those days", I remember "Top Gun" when it was first out in the "Drive in" movie theater. I also remember my first love... they say a man never quite loves a woman that same way again... but a song like that "one" from that group Berlin, and those memories back then as bittersweet as it is... those memories are a 100% burned in my brain forever. Thanks again for posting this video.
Yes, it's probably the best grand piano you can get from the DX7. It has amazing realism, particularly at lower notes. I never imagined that the DX7 can produce such harmonic rich piano sound!!
Yes, I just couldn't stand those DX7 factory sax patches (designed for a breath controller, but they don't sound nothing like a sax), so I made my own DX7 sax patches ( must be over 30 of them, many of them are failures). I love that DX7 alto sax with amazing realism, yet uniquely DX7!!! No, I don't have a breath controller (I should have bought it back in the 80's), so it took a while to set key velocity sensitivity and envelopes right!!
A friend gave me one of those Yamaha BC2 or 3 controllers in the 1990s, but I found it hard to use and required a strong input of breath. Having said that, I have tried to play real wind instruments with not much success!
The Yamaha DX7 was my first synthesizer. I truly loved this instrument because of its brilliant sound quality. I played most of the songs in this video with my band. It sounded mind blowing. Thank you sir for hoping me relive that moment. I hope the DX7 sound patches are available in all instruments.
Perfect sound recreations! Final countdown trumpet was originally made on jx 8p from Roland. I am amazed how good you are recreating analog sounds on a...FM synth!!! Can you share the system files please?? You are an amazing sound programmer!
Great Job Mate !! Main of that songs weren't necessary done with a DX7 (some were PPG or Emu 2 for example) but you did a fantastic programming to approach them greatly. Impressive ...
A DX7 emulating a fairlight that is quite impressive! I quite like the mr.mister and berlin cover, could you do also madonna's live to tell? It has such an atmospheric texture which I think is very DX7 like. Also the top gun intro with it's deep tubular bells is quite a good DX7 track.
Thanks for your positive comment. I love Live To tell. I'm getting more requests for more 80's songs, so I've got find a time to work on that later........
Thanks for the upload. To be honest the DX-7 is not that amazing, but those bands and musicians used in very clever and nice ways, and people listen to those songs over and over again, still do. Btw, not to many talk about DX-1, because as l told you, these bands and music videos on Tv, most of them have DX-7!!!
You have created SO MANY great patches for the DX-7 !!! Are they available to buy anywhere? (to run in DEXED for instance?) Do you have sounds for sale as .SYX files maybe ? (Original DX-7 format) Or maybe something for the FM8? Whatever the format *I would love to buy some !!!*
That "tinny" FM sound that is sooooo arbuctus of the DX7 will never be forgotten, it *WAS* the sound of the '80s, a time when Roland, Yamaha et al were trying to out-do each other but what did they do... created the best and most long-living LEGENDS that still hold their place now - albeit at GREAT EXPENSE!!!
I showed up at my first practice after joining up with a local band, and one of the guitarists was immediately amazed to see a DX7. As little as I actually use it for the songs we do, it's irreplaceable for those few songs: Livin' on a Prayer, Don't You Forget About Me, and especially any song that needs mellow electric piano or bass doubling.

Right! Too bad it was trash. But hey it had to work itself out. Allot of experimentation back then.
I know. It’s horrible!
Are you three crazy? It was anything BUT trash!
I don't remember hearing this sound in RAiders of the Lost Ark or Back to the Future!
Because ricomajestic, that would’ve been anachronistic (other than “Back in Time” or “The Power of Love”.
The dx7 was cutting edge and for good reason, same with the roland Jupiter 8 wonderful effects. Long live the eternal 80s.

Possibly the more "authentic" DX7 video i've ever seen, subbed for sure!
Thank you. I put a lot of efforts in making this DX7 demo video, making sure that all songs are faithfully created as much as possible using the DX7 only. And thank you for subscribing to my channel. Cheers, Power DX7.
I love the sounds of a DX7! Thanks for this video!
Very cool video! Thanks for playing and sharing.
Pink Floyd`s "Terminal Frost", A-ha was incredible recreation!
Without all the repair issues.....
@@NathanEllery With literally unlimited preset and bank memory.
what's the link to the emulation?

I discovered this video as a sponsored advertisement which appeared before the music video I wanted to watch.
I enjoyed your demo so much, that I actually listened to it until the end, then closed my browser, and completely forgot to watch the actual video I first came here for.
I'm speechless!!!!!!! I'm really glad that the 80's hits video is great, great enough that you forgot to watch the video that you were supposed to watch!!!! Feel free to share and tell your friends about this video. Thanks for the great comment! I hope that you had a great Christmas and a Happy New Year!!!
finally a guy that knows how to program the synth instead of using factory patches.
Thanks KGB!
Esse Sintetizador e o Bixo mesmo depois de tantos anos ele e único os timbres são inconfundível top Fantástico
This video should be required viewing for FM syntheses.
FM can do anything, in the right hands.
The most powerful under rated syntheses type on earth.
The best synth key action ever made.
Perfect Angle of Camera, and very speed movement of Hand,,,,,,,Impresionant.......
WOW! Awesome! You did a superb job. The Yamaha Dx7 and the Oberheim OB-XA are the sounds of my childhood.
Ah, the OB-Xa, now that was a proper synth, that thing had knobs!
Wow. Reminds me of myself with my DX7 back in the late 80's. Thanks for the memories. Great job
The DX7 had amazing touch sensitivity. I think the touch sensitivity is better on the DX7 than Yamahas new keyboard models.
Well it lasted the test of time and i agree its better than the newer versions.
Knobbelaut Jönsson You really shoud have read my whole comment before posting...
OH MY GOSH!! Im living my 80s years again!! Great job, loving this video!!!
Broken wings and open your heart simply amazing
Do you have your favourite 80's song in this 80's hits video? 1. Berlin, Take My Breath Away 2. Europe, The Final Countdown 3. Rush, The Big Money 4. a-ha, Take On Me 5. Howard Jones, Pearl In The Shell 6. Pink Floyd, Terminal Frost 7. Madonna, Open Your Heart 8. Mr Mister, Broken Wings 9. Mr Mister, Kyrie 10. Peter Gabriel, The Family And The Fishing Net
Power DX7 3 and 6 man :)
Or Queen - "Who Wants To Live Forever?" (1986) - the introduction and accompaniment are played on a DX7 by Brian May...
Gotta do some Tears For Fears, Nik Kershaw, Alphaville, Go West. :-)
Depeche Mode Enjoy the Silence
Silver Pozzoli - Around my dream ( Extended Versión ) is the best song of 80's.
Great synth, had mine for years never let me down once, wish i still had it.
classic 80 patches never gets old
Truly such a pure and futuristic sound. In the right hands with inspiration.
Aw shit, gotta play some GTA:VC again.
they need to make a new vice city man it was the best gta for music.
Imagine having one of these and a basic 4 track recorder in the 80’s. You literally have an entire band! Idk if some of the instruments require stereo, then you’d only have 2-3 instruments.
Every time I think I despise 80s music, it always finds it's way back to me.
I remember first seeing this wonderful work of musical art back in 1985 it was so different from everything I have ever heard up to that point still a amazing synth
By the way Mr. Mister's next album "Go On" was according to Steve George done completely with a D50. Thanks for posting!
Great demo, rare to see anyone actually breaking it all down track by track rather than just playing the leads. What a versatile synth..
Loving this! A trip down memory lane that's for sure! Lots of work gone into this... a labour of love no doubt, so kudos to You!
Great sounds from a classic synth! THE synth of popular music from 1984-1988.
Great emulations! I love DX sounds! Take on Me is the best for me! Congratulations.
thanks. The slap bass was quite easy, but the rest was a bit tricky. glad that you like Take On Me the best.
Takes me back to the time I had my own DX7 back in the day. Thank You.
I have my DX7 MK1 since 1986 and still going strong! I'm so happy that I kept my DX7, it's been a great buddy!
I've currently got a Yamaha Arius digital piano connected to PC with Ibanez GIO and amp. Makes for good recording.
just goes to show what a surprisingly versatile and fabulous sounding synth this is. fantastic interpretations of these classic tracks, thx!
The Family and the Fishing Net! Very underrated song by Peter Gabriel! He is great. Great video!
Great programming as usual! I hope you make your patches available for purchase!
Do you have your favourites? Which DX7 sound do you like?
My pleasure !
Like them all & very well played / presented ... thumbs up again ! ;-))
Thanks Synth Colors. I wanted to makes sure all the DX7 sounds and song arrangements are top quality!!! This is my finest DX7 demo video, faithfully re-creating those 80's hits and ground breaking songs!!!
Definitely ... So many positive comments can't be just fortuity ! ;-))
Excellent weekend to you & keep sharing these jewels ! ;-))
Dude this is super cool! Never knew about this synth before this video. So many iconic sounds!!!
It is like to feel you are flying. Thanks my dear friend
Excellent video, thanx!!!! Would be great to see some programming tutorials, very easy step by step for beginners :))))))))))))
One of the greatest synths ever.
the Broken Wings main bassline played is just black keys. Love the DX7 !
xp50player Practically bar one note I think.
One of your best videos so far awesome! Keep up the great work!
Thanks, I'm hoping that more people see my video. Feel free to share and spread the word!! Cheers, Power DX7.
Wow. even your carpet is so 80's. fantastic !
The DX7 is what the made the 80s the best decade for music
Oh my God how lovely a piece of music "Take My Breath Away" is.
Ever evolving soundscapes igniting the fire of 80's music!!
I love that piano from Terminal Frost
Yes, it's probably the best grand piano you can get from the DX7. It has amazing realism, particularly at lower notes. I never imagined that the DX7 can produce such harmonic rich piano sound!!
Utterly mind-blown on this patch, sir. WOW!
All of it is first class! So even the saxophone is DX7? Must have used a wind breath controller?
This one is a real legend performed so many beautiful songs.
Thank you for 15,000 views!!!! I really hope you enjoy watching this amazing DX7 demo of re-creating those great 80's songs!!!!
1.2 mill now!
I had a DX7 in the mid 80's and back then that was THE board to have.
Wow, great DX7 sounds! I wish I knew how to program these beasts...Thanks for sharing :)
The Final Countdown - Wrong chords, but still sounds great :) tnx
Horrible shit.
Almost none of the chords are accurate, they just sound random. I don't get why he changed it so drastically.
Total crap, and sounds like a jobby stuck in the pan.
@@Ndlanding Ha!
May have something to do with copyright
Man that Madona track. I was seriously nodding along. 👌
Perfect sound recreations! Final countdown trumpet was originally made on jx 8p from Roland. I am amazed how good you are recreating analog sounds on a...FM synth!!! Can you share the system files please?? You are an amazing sound programmer!
wow, you rock ! It's agreat plesure to hear you playing !
Great Job Mate !! Main of that songs weren't necessary done with a DX7 (some were PPG or Emu 2 for example) but you did a fantastic programming to approach them greatly. Impressive ...
Nice work. The Family And The Fishing Net used Fairlight CMI and Chapman Stick. You did well to recreate them on the DX7!
I just love the Minimoog bass, Fairlight sampled sounds, so I had to re-create the song using my DX7 MK1!!!
dx7. forever best synth
I have a MX49, but the MX series will never be as rad as this legend.
(to run in DEXED for instance?)
Do you have sounds for sale as .SYX files maybe ? (Original DX-7 format) Or maybe something for the FM8?
Whatever the format *I would love to buy some !!!*
Thanks for that, brought back lots of happy memories, and some not so happy too, all part of life's mix. Love your setup too!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Gosh this sends shivers down my spine. Fantastic craft. The DX7 was an awesome synth. And still is!
Was playing on DX7 in 90s. Brilliant sounds! Maybe one day again...
Any way you can teach us how to make some of these patches? Do a tutorial for one of the patches at least.
WTF is an arbuctus
Hermoso el yamaha DX7 nada que ver con los nuevos yamaha este tenia calidad de sobra..
I showed up at my first practice after joining up with a local band, and one of the guitarists was immediately amazed to see a DX7. As little as I actually use it for the songs we do, it's irreplaceable for those few songs:
Livin' on a Prayer, Don't You Forget About Me, and especially any song that needs mellow electric piano or bass doubling.
