    This demo shows you pad, string & ambient sounds. Some sounds are presets from various banks and some were made by myself. Most of the sounds play first only with some reverb and then with a strong chorus effect in order to give you an idea how DX7 can sound with a 80's DCO synth style chorus.
    Everything was improvised live (no midi was used).

    The DX7 is wild to me, it's such a synth of extremes that it both does those really cheesy raspy 80s pop sounds but the same engine is also one of the best synths for ambient textures. It kind of makes sense in a weird way when you think about how it's designed though.
    Also that chorus sounds great!

      I totally agree. The hate is definitely unjust and we can totally blame the hate on 80s popstars who never even attempt to experiment or learn how to program it.

      Keep in mind that max velocity of DX7 keyboard is 99 and not the standard 127, so in order to have the patches sounding like in the demos you need to keep velocity quite low, usually below 50, otherwise many patches can sound quite dreadful.

    Chorus and Reverb add a lot to the sound, making it stero and magic :)

    • @synesthetica
      @synesthetica  10 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Yes, and that's also why mid 80's DCO synths are so good at pad & string sounds. They have an on-board chorus effect in order to compensate for the thinner sound of DCOs. One has to approach DX7 in a similar manner as even if it is a 6 OP synth and you can patch it as a 2 or 3 sawtooth osc synth it still sounds weird when you detune them. You don't get the typical detune effect. So for detuning and fattening you have to use a good chorus.

    These sounds are lovely! I'm curious about what you were using for the chorus effect. I've been on the lookout for a decent chorus pedal to pair with my own DX7, and the chorus here is perfect. Cheers.

    • @synesthetica
      @synesthetica  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The chorus is Korg MDE-X plugin in Deep Ensemble setting. An old plugin from Legacy Collection. It sounds terrific. Alternatively you can try Chorus 60 from Tal Audio.
      If you want hardware I'm not sure what I'd recommend. The TC JUNE sounds nothing like these old choruses. I still have to find a hardware equivalent to this plugin.

    • @synesthetica
      @synesthetica  9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanx. DX7 can be very dreamy, glassy, even ethereal, but not in a D50 way. I'd say it has this acoustic, physical quality in sound that most synths lack. You can almost feel the metal or glass. That's what I love about DX7. It never sounds plastic.

    • @monsterjazzlicks
      @monsterjazzlicks 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Rok Koritnik Nice description Rok. Everybody generalizes it as being METALIC just because they hear other people saying the word! Such a limiting term and people do not realish how lush and warm the DX7 can sound in the correct hand (like yourself!).

    • @synesthetica
      @synesthetica  9 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Of course it can sound warm. It can actually sound warmer than some DCO synths or VA synths. Just listen to some organs in DX7 or some basses. But really, I find it even does those metallic things in a warm way (by that I do not mean those horrible clangorous, distorted metallic growls you get when experimenting with it and it the beast gets out of your hands and starts barking like an android dog). People have trouble understanding this synth as very few take the trouble and program it. Therefore everyone thinks it is only capable of slap basses, electric pianos and metallophone-like sounds.

    • @monsterjazzlicks
      @monsterjazzlicks 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Rok Koritnik Ha ha, yes, when people first start to mess about with it, they just end up with awful deep and clangy sounds! Then they just dismiss it as being either too hard to program, or an inferior instrument!

    • @synesthetica
      @synesthetica  9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      DX7 has a very narrow sweet spot. When you tweak any Roland Juno you basically never end up with un-listenable sound. On DX7 you end up with that kind of sound most of the time if you don't know what you're doing.

    What do you think of the Yamaha Reface DX? I just got one for extremely cheap because the vintage DX7 synths I looked at were a little too pricey, do you think it can accomplish anything close to a real DX7?

    • @synesthetica
      @synesthetica  หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@WarriorEsoteric Reface DX lacks the weight and physicality of DX7. It sound more modern, more polished and less 3D. I wouldn't mind having one, but it doesn't replace s DX7. I'm looking for a replacement myself, because there's just too much maintainance involved with vintage synths. DXs are very old now and it's hard to find one that doesn't require servicing unless you pay a lot of money. I quite like Opsix, but unfortunately the interface is not optimal. I'll likely get one, though.

    I sold mine after really getting to grips with it's principles and programming the hell out of it. Almost anyhting you made on it was buzy and drenched in sinusoid harmonics. The crazy thing is that Elka built a 4 operator FM synth based on a Yamaha chip that actually sounded a lot better (EK/EM 44). Wish I had put so much effort in that one.

    • @synesthetica
      @synesthetica  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      DX7 has a very small sweetspot. You have to figure out where to search for good sounds. If you just experiment it sounds dreadful most of the time. Also, it's best to let it do what it does well and not push it into directions it doesn't want to go.

    • @marcbrasse747
      @marcbrasse747 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@synesthetica I totally agree. I found that sweetspot. For me it however only led to 2 killer sounds and another handfull of quite nice ones. That is however a very narrow basis for a long term relationship. An electronic instrument should never dictate what one gets out of it. It's programmer should. And in that respect the DX7 scores very low. It was however good at sweet electric piano's, a good assortment of other basic keyboard sounds and , for the time, very impressive bass sounds. That was already good enough to make it a resounding succes.

    • @synesthetica
      @synesthetica  4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@marcbrasse747 I simply consider it as an instrument with its specific sound and abilities. And I do that with every synth, because to date I haven't played a synth that would be able to produce every sound I imagine, and I consider that a good thing. Just now I'm working on soundbanks for Nord Lead 2 and Oberheim OB12. They both have their limitations as well as their strengths. So I just don't try to force them to do what the can't do and instead use them for what they excel in. The limitations of OB12 are greater than those of Nord Lead, though, but I can create some sounds on OB12 I can't on NL2 and vice versa.
      DX7 for me is a synth for dreamy e-pianos, metallophone-like sounds, glassy pads, some specific basses and electric sounding leads. Maybe some strings here and there and that's about it. It doesn't do everything, but it does some things the way no other synth does.

    • @marcbrasse747
      @marcbrasse747 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Nice mid range pads but still with some bass depth, as well as slightly glassy and metallic pad sounds. Way better than the average example from a modern synth. From what I here how it's lot less delicate and many sounds try and swoosh around and fizz to much, like and hard synth.

    Getting a decent board plus ALL the patches will cost as least $5000? But with a DAW, window 10 laptop, and mostplugins, a crappy or decent Midicontroller, interface will be less than a grand??

    If you were to use the DX7 on a live gig, then which CHORUS PEDAL would you use please? BOSS-CE1?

    • @synesthetica
      @synesthetica  9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I bought Zoom MS70-cdr. It has two or three great choruses, that will do for live. But I like it's reverbs more. I want to try EH Polychorus one day on DX7. Might work well. I can't say about CE-1. The best thing is simply to try a few different ones and see. I must say that I'm totally blown away by this Korg MDE-X ensemble. I wish they would make a hardware pedal. It has that 80's DCO synth chorus sound.

    This sound is really from dx7 mk1?. My have a lots of noise. TX816 or emulator?

    • @synesthetica
      @synesthetica  10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, it's coming from DX7 mk1. I use low pass filter at around 12kHz to get rid of some of the white noise. It's also that not all the patches are noisy, but most of the bass patches are, but you can always cut those high frequencies.

    • @systemlfo
      @systemlfo 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Rok Koritnik - I hear a lot of people talk about the noise of the DX7 mk1 but my TX7 is really quite clean.

    • @synesthetica

      For start, use algorithms 1-6 and 14-15. They will give you a 2-3 oscillator architecture. Then simply experiment with different pitches and levels of modulators (in case of algorithm 5; OP 2, 4 and 6). The fun part are the envelopes :)
