  • Changed and flushed the coolant on my 2009 Yamaha YZF-R1. Should be similar process on most bikes. I am in a hot climate, so I don't need antifreeze.

    I own a Yamaha R1, 2009 and this video has been very useful. Thank you ever so much. Can't tell you how helpful this video was..

    I just changed the starter on my 2009 R1 because the bike was failing to start. Starter was getting slower and would not turn the bike over fast enough to start it. I found that pulling the overflow reservoir and the hose behind it gave me a direct shot to the starter to remove it. You still have to get under the tank to remove the positive lead to the starter though. Your starter is starting to sound like mine did before it completely quit. Just a heads up!

    Yeah, I'd change out the fluids just to make sure its all fresh. Bleed brakes, coolant flush, oil change.

    I don't think this is a full flush. I have read instructions where you fill up the radiator with distilled water after the drain and run the engine til the fans turn on. This circulates all of the fluid. There is still a lot of coolant in the radiator, hoses and water pump. Repeat til everything coming out is clear. Then fill.

    Thanks man!!! Trying for an hour where the damn reservoir cap was!!! So easy on my intruder!! Where it should be!! On the top of the radiator...

    Thanks for the video, so how has the Engine Ice worked for you? I have 16,000 miles on my OEM coolant. My R1 always runs really hot, around 190/200 cruising and the temp soars to 220 at traffic lights on a 80 degree day

    • @JohnPaulCraig
      @JohnPaulCraig  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Mine used to hit those temps as well at lights, although my cruising is generally more in the 180s/190s. I flashed my ECU though and had the fans come on at lower temperature, so now it rarely goes above 208ish, but that's more the fans than the engine ice.

    Great Video Man, Is the Engine Ice good for cold weather also? I've been thinking about using it on my 2000 r1 but I live in Boston MA and the winters here are a bit brutal.

    • @JohnPaulCraig
      @JohnPaulCraig  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't think so. It's not anti-freeze, so I believe it will still freeze below 32F. I am in Florida, so that never happens and I just leave it in year round, but if yours is in a place that gets below 32, I'd put anti-freeze back in in the winters, or just not use it.

    Thanks For the video
    but am a little confused, the owners manual said that the bike has 2.7 L including all routes
    but when you flush the system only one bottle of engine ice fits , and thats like 1.9 L
    any thoughts on that ?

      I probably needed to run it once more. I don't think i got everything behind the thermostat.

      For the 2009 at least, there was a technical advisory or something and I had it replaced by Yamaha for free. Otherwise, I haven't had any issues.

      John-Paul Craig thank you for the quick reply I don’t know if I should buy 1 or 2 as it seems like you only use one bottle. I understand the manual said to use a gallon

    • @JohnPaulCraig
      @JohnPaulCraig  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      You can always top it off with distilled water if you need a little extra, but probably won't even need it.
