Man you've given me life back I fought a heron addiction I got 6months clean and all I do is ride my gsxr and watch you're vids you don't know the difference you've made I want to thank you so much
also, after you add the coolant, run the bike again to allow coolant to flow and fill the empty areas. then check it again and top off. if you dont, you will run the risk of overheating due to not enough coolant. also, when running it, leave the rad cap off until it starts to boil. cut off the engine and put the cap back of. allows the system to burp air bubbles out.
Another easy way that I use on my 09 1125r is this; drain coolant, fill with distilled water, remove coolant return to radiator hose and route it to a container, with bike running add distilled water to the radiator as fast as it comes out the return hose. This will thoroughly remove all coolant. Then do this same process with your choice of coolant. I prefer Motul motocool factory line to engine ice, the specs are better.
Another way to get air out of the system is to put the radiator cap on and shake the bike back and forth vigorously, then take the cap back off, do this until your coolant level stops dropping in your radiator. It's called burping the bike. Certain bikes (like mine) either have the bleeder screw in a hard to reach place or don't have one at all. Air in the system will damage the water pump over time.
Exactly what I was thinking. I'd almost bet after you run the engine for a few minutes and fill the coolant ports in the engine block that you could fit the rest of that jug of coolant perfectly. Do this before you put all the fairings back on so you can fill the overflow reservoir since it should pull from there to keep the radiator full.
A good tip for filling the system back up. Pump one of the coolant lines with your hand by squeezing and releasing several times. This will force any remaining air out of the system and will allow you to top off the radiator. After a couple squeezes you will notice the coolant level in the radiator will drop.
I like these How To's. I've got a Yamaha Thundercat from '97 and haven't changed the coolant since i bought it nearly 2 years ago. I wasnt sure about this whole cycle "put dest. water in, turn on, let it run out, again, then coolant...." and my bike runs just fine... But now i saw how to do it and its very simple, i'll do it in the coming weeks, good job chase.
Good job mate, very comprehensive. One thing you maybe should have added is that you should run the bike for a bit after adding the engine ice then check the fluid level again because it can sometimes have a few air bubbles in there.
Thank you for taking the time to make this video. I heard the Engine Ice will clump up if mixed with water or other coolants. Double flush with distilled water...got it!
Don't forget to cycle the system again by running the bike and leaving the cap off of the radiator. This will let out and air pockets in the cooling system. If you don't it can cause the engine to overheat.
Only thing I could suggest would be to squeeze the radiator hose as you refill it. This will help push out any air bubbles in the system. Not sure if you did this but it wasn't mentioned so that's my 2 cents. Otherwise..Good tutorial.
Hi chaseontwowheels, great video but 1 thing worries me. When the engine is hot (as shown in your video), I would personally wait a few hours until the engine is completely cold. Because replacing the hot coolant with cool air runs the risk of cracking your head or some other damage. As an engineer I know rapid cooling of aluminium and other alloys is really bad in ANY engine.
DirtRider500R Yeah I agree it will be linear, but you have to take into account people from cool climates, like myself (UK) with a low abient temperture. Assuming the coolent hasnt been cooled and stood in open space we can assume it will be the same temperture as the ambient air. 20 degrees C would be the average for summer time here in the UK, less in other parts of the world. I'm not trying to be a "smart arse"or a "know it all", I just dont think its good advice dumping fresh coolent into a hot engine. No matter how good the grade of alloy, it will cool a lot quicker than it is intended to. This is called quenshing in engineering.
I cant believe your bike still runs/turns on, more durable then i thought they were. like even though itll look like crap, it will still get you where you needto go, as is.
Bleed the the radiator cooling system with the radiator cap off and a funnel in it with little extra coolant sitting in it. As the engine runs the extra coolant bubbles as air escapes and the coolant fills in. Idk if the r6 or motorcycles in general have a way of doing that by itself lol but thats how i do it on my car and thats how its done on other cars. And FYI to those asking if its bad to mix a higher water to coolant ratio, its not. WATER IS THE BEST WAY TO KEEP YOUR ENGINE COOL but chemicals and additives in coolant are designed to keep it from freezing in extremely cold temperatures.
Luke Tabayoyong I was gonna say the exact same thing about bleeding the air out, if you don't sometimes the bike will hiccup and overheat a bit.. And about the water being mixed in, that's true, but engine ice works best in the mix it comes with, dropping your engine temp by up to 10 degrees, if you mix it with too much water it dilutes it more .. I'm from Texas, so I need all the coolness I can get lol..
I love the How-To Videos! Even though it's a different bike than my ZX6R it does give me the general idea of how it works. And to do a flush and let the bike run. Thanks Chase!
Older video I know but this just saved me. Basically a friend of mine overheated my bike because he's not used to liquid cooled and his is air-cooled. He's been practicing with my R6 bc his is a 500cc and needs mine for his full license test. He ran the coolant dry. I went to fill it up but Yamaha made it so I can't see the fill line and have to take off the fairings just to access the reservoir just to drain it. At 2am after the gym, in the dark. What a pain in the ass. I just now saw how it was emptied. Damn. Rip. Ah well. Next bike is going to be naked. I love the look of fairings but they're annoying. A Gixxer has 1 panel. Mine has 4 and 99 bolts. Thanks Yamaha Edit: Just saw how you can drain it out of the bottom of the bike. I had taken my reservoir off the bike and poured out coolant until the full line. Then reinstalled. Plus all the fairings.
Good job on the how to. Keep them comin. Interesting how different the process is between bikes. Mine has to be drained at the water pump and at the radiator, along with using thread sealant when replacing the bolts, then you have to "burp" the hoses when re-filling with coolant...
Not really a big deal and just leaving a comment to comment but in my fz6 manual I think it says to make sure the overflow is inbetween the High and Low marks when cold. Thanks for the video.
Yep. Definitely like it. Keep the how to vids comin. Good job. It can only help you become a better mechanic and learn what works from other people who may have a more efficient or cost saving way.
Good stuff Chase. I would recommend adding in a step to rinse out the reservoir with some distilled vinegar to clean out any scale/sluge that may have collected in there. Just pour some in, shake it and rinse out with water. Look forward to seeing what's next for Holly.
You kinda forgot the step to make sure there is no air in the coolant system. I don't know if this particular bike handles that on it's own but I know there's plenty of other bikes that don't. I usually squeezed the hell out of the hoses on the bike until there weren't any bubbles coming out of the radiator cap.
This particular bike will circulate the air bubble up & out of the radiator in the the expansion tank (as its radiator's physical opening/cap is way higher than the highest point of the engine). But remember to let the engine cool completely (I generally let it cool over night then open the radiator cap to top off with coolant and refill the expansion tank to the Full mark). As you and Kevin mentioned, squeeze the hose won't hurt either.
wouldnt you circulate the engine ice coolant too? as you did with water? because once starting the bike it completely flushed the old coolant out and now theres water there, so wouldnt you need to flush the water out using the new coolant? because somehow i dont know about you, but i wouldnt want to keep any water in there mixed with my coolant.
coolants are a mix of 50/50 antifreeze and water lol. a little bit extra water shouldn't be that big a deal. it would probably raise the freezing point and lower the boiling point by a few degrees tho
Although I don't yet own a bike, I find this video thoroughly interesting! I do want to see all the videos to bring back holly, as I'm sure a lot of others do too. Keep it up Chase!
your how to videos are awesome. Really informative and entertaining. Very helpful when I'm learning about bike maintenance and not wanting to spend money to take it into a shop, it's good to know how to do it yourself. I have a red 07 yamaha r6. two thumbs up !!! I love you yummir6 motonosity and all the other motovloggers.
Why didn't you drain the way the manual instructs - disconnecting the hose directly to the right of the screw you removed? Seems to be the lowest point of the radiators circulation, so there'd likely be a lot of sediment you're not getting rid of by removing just the bolt you've suggested.
Hey man yeah can u keep up with these how to videos cuz I would like to learn like all the maintenance work to keep my bike running smoothly with out having to go to the shops all the time
I really enjoyed your format! Since I am new to motorcycles, I would really like to see an oil change. I think you will have something with How-To videos here :) Keep up the good work!
what mileage on any bike should you do a coolant flush i.e. CBR 600rr b/c my manual doesn't say? open to suggestions,my bike has 8,500 miles...I did like the how to video, def should do more like them.
The second step (the one u skipped) did u leave the bottom bolt off and poor threw or did u put it back in and start the bake again. Loved the the vid as i always do
Chase, I know it is a little late to ask this but, how come you did not use 50% coolent and 50% water. Is it ok the use all the engine ice and not to half it with water? I want to use it on my 2009 R6S and appreciate your opinion. Thank You.
just remove the lowest cooler hose, its way faster and easier. And after you filled it, start it up and the cooler lvl will go down a bid :D Nice vid btw, its still helpfull
I just filled to under the full line on reservoir tank. then the radiator. radiator did not fill? did I do it backwards? on yours you have left over from filling your radiator and then filling up your Reservoir and you still had some left right now if I pour it into the radiator I'm not going to have any left and I don't think it's going to fill it.
You need to keep the cap off and turn the engine on and have the coolant flow through the engine and fill it up until the coolant levels stop going down in the radiator
I have a 2015 r3 and I can't find anything on the coolant change but I came across this one and im hopeing it's about the same .....about how often do you do this maint. ?
Dont you have to run the bike with the cap open to burp any bubble in trapped inside? I know its like that with a car but maybe its different for a bike
No, if its like a car, you fill it as much as you can first, then you run it and let it burp any bubbles out and fill it more as needed. never run any vehicle without any coolant in the system
this tutorials should be more about scooters , its very hard to get into such parts , I have a 98 honda helix, and I want to flush the cooling system , But you can not get to the radiator tank. I can only get hands on the reservoir
Man you've given me life back I fought a heron addiction I got 6months clean and all I do is ride my gsxr and watch you're vids you don't know the difference you've made I want to thank you so much
Hope u still good ,riding is a drug in itself imo.
also, after you add the coolant, run the bike again to allow coolant to flow and fill the empty areas. then check it again and top off. if you dont, you will run the risk of overheating due to not enough coolant. also, when running it, leave the rad cap off until it starts to boil. cut off the engine and put the cap back of. allows the system to burp air bubbles out.
Cruiser Brewser Thanks for that added info man!
+chaseontwowheels no problem. I found out the hard way once. Haha

Man 5 years later and you’re still helping newbs like myself. Amazing detailed video man :)
You should of ran bike after refilled since there is likely air in cooling system and overflow tank will need topping up.
A key note, he used pre-mixed engine ice. If using concentrate you must mix with distilled water to proper levels, refer to your owner manual.
A good tip for filling the system back up. Pump one of the coolant lines with your hand by squeezing and releasing several times. This will force any remaining air out of the system and will allow you to top off the radiator. After a couple squeezes you will notice the coolant level in the radiator will drop.
I appreciate how you've put together a solid instructional video with a bike that's been absolutely trashed. Good work :).
I like these How To's.

I love these how to videos, simply because im learning more about my bike as you do them!
Absolutely enjoyed this video please put out more like it for people who aren't engine savvy
Good job mate, very comprehensive. One thing you maybe should have added is that you should run the bike for a bit after adding the engine ice then check the fluid level again because it can sometimes have a few air bubbles in there.

don't put the cap on until you are finished. as the coolant drops, add fluid. once the air is out the level will stop dropping.

I usually squeezed the hell out of the hoses on the bike until there weren't any bubbles coming out of the radiator cap.
grdv10 Running the bike should take care of that, especially if you put the expected amount of coolant in. Doing it manually doesn't hurt, though.

it would be awesome to see more how toos. especially being a new bike owner.
I know how to tear my engine apart and rebuild the entire thing already. I just like Chase's soothing voice is all ;)
How-to videos would be a great addition to your channel!! I've burnt my wrist before from a radiator that cooled for over 30 minutes....not fun!!
your how to videos are awesome. Really informative and entertaining. Very helpful when I'm learning about bike maintenance and not wanting to spend money to take it into a shop, it's good to know how to do it yourself. I have a red 07 yamaha r6. two thumbs up !!! How-To on a motorcycle is very interesting to me so i say keep em coming man i'm enjoying it :D

What really speeds it up is letting it run and get nice and hot. Then take the radiator cap of using one swift twist.
Michael Gallagher instructions unclear, 3rd degree burns were obtained
Lol
How often should we flush this system, every year, every two years?
The "how to" videos are very useful, thanks.
I like the how to videos! Even tho i dont have a bike.
Hey man yeah can u keep up with these how to videos cuz I would like to learn like all the maintenance work to keep my bike running smoothly with out having to go to the shops all the time
But didn’t leaving that drain plug in the drain stop any chunks that may have been in there?
Yes more DIY vids. Helps others looking how to do the job and not pay them damn rip off bike shops.
Definitely would love more how to videos.
Good shit!!! Keep them coming!!!do all bikes!!! More damn it more!!!
Why do you need distilled water? or is it not needed, but you prefer it?
Good job shoulda recorded when the reservoir fluid started going into the engine ...amazing view!!
I really enjoyed your format! Since I am new to motorcycles, I would really like to see an oil change. I think you will have something with How-To videos here :) Keep up the good work!
Definitely prefer "how-to" videos. Everything else out there doesn't have as good of quality as this 👌🏼
Good how to man!!! I also changed my coolent this year! When I re did my R6
what mileage on any bike should you do a coolant flush i.e. CBR 600rr b/c my manual doesn't say? open to suggestions,my bike has 8,500 miles...I did like the how to video, def should do more like them.
ok, so you gotta fill the radiator up and then fill up the coolant bootle to the middle. correct?
are those Race Railz ? minus the aluminum pucks?
I like the how-to videos :) You should take some of the money we sent you and replace that two bros exhaust with something better
Is all of the engine ice the same product
I like these how to vids :)
How many times are you suppose to do this to your bike? Once a year?
I know this is old but how often or how many miles do I change the coolant?
Did you run it after you pull the coolant in so it can fill the entire system then check it?
I love how to videos! Especially when it's on the same exact bike that I own! Good shit! Thanks Chase!
The second step (the one u skipped) did u leave the bottom bolt off and poor threw or did u put it back in and start the bake again. Loved the the vid as i always do
What about the drain plug at the bottom of the radiator?
Great vid man, keep up the how to vids, good luck on the rebuild!
I’m doing this after winter 👌🏾thanks nice video
Does the ammount of liquid raise/lower once the bike is turn on/off?
keep them coming with the how to videos.
Chase, I know it is a little late to ask this but, how come you did not use 50% coolent and 50% water. Is it ok the use all the engine ice and not to half it with water? I want to use it on my 2009 R6S and appreciate your opinion. Thank You.
Love the How-To videos..
Just curious. Was all that stuff that came out why you flushed it? How often do you flush the coolant?
Love the how-to vids keep them up
Really good video! :) Please do more How To Videos. I'm learning ALOT :)
just remove the lowest cooler hose, its way faster and easier.
And after you filled it, start it up and the cooler lvl will go down a bid :D
Nice vid btw, its still helpfull
Luv the how to videos brother keep uo the good work an cany wait for holly to get back togather
Keep em coming, extremely informative.
SOCKET. It's a socket Chase.
Dylan Andersen lmao, you know me. I can't call anything by it's actual name.
The only thing that keeps your engine cool is the air flow thru the radiator, not some additive .
What about the air bubbles you forgot to mention.
Nevermind, I have my changes and finished up. Thanks man!
You need to keep the cap off and turn the engine on and have the coolant flow through the engine and fill it up until the coolant levels stop going down in the radiator
How many degrees cooler does the engine run now with the Engine Ice?
I have a 2015 r3 and I can't find anything on the coolant change but I came across this one and im hopeing it's about the same .....about how often do you do this maint. ?
Does the owner's manual not say anything about changing the coolant?
looks nice without the fairings
I'd run the bike after you do the final fill to get all the air out of the system. Them check the level at the radiator cap
Good morning chase and company
YOU FINALLY FIXED YOUR BIKE :D :D :D
NOW WE CAN RIDE TOGETHER!
1xr Nope, still fixing...but soon!
Beautiful machine 🥺
Will this work on a 2012 R6
Is that a two brothers exhaust?
What is that song at 1:50 its epiccc
Very good video I watched it just to double check how it was done after I flushed mine perfect
You should do more of these
Just wondering, does anybody know if shorty levers are universal to any bike? Thanks
Love the how to video, great video as usual! Thanks
Please keep on doing the tutorial videos how to do it good for us and good for you and good for us to see how it's going
How long time engine was running with fans on?
love the how to videos ! keep em comin!
Dont you have to run the bike with the cap open to burp any bubble in trapped inside? I know its like that with a car but maybe its different for a bike
Yes
With it empty?
No, if its like a car, you fill it as much as you can first, then you run it and let it burp any bubbles out and fill it more as needed. never run any vehicle without any coolant in the system
Should you clean out that resoivior if it looks dirty inside
Good idea, perhaps a cleaning of the whole system if there is a lot of dirt. Some will use tap water and it creates dirt.
this tutorials should be more about scooters , its very hard to get into such parts , I have a 98 honda helix, and I want to flush the cooling system , But you can not get to the radiator tank. I can only get hands on the reservoir
