    I was at the tour and follwed the race the last several days ....I got into Paris when they were racing on the circuit...and right next to the small circle of Team Le Mond after he won...There was no one supporting him from the team and management who I believed at the time wanted Hinnault to win.. In interviews since then, Greg has said just that...

    I'm currently listening to "The Comeback" about Greg Le Mond's career and just finished the part about the 1986 Tour. This is too cool to see coverage from the event!

      Such a great book! I highly recommend also reading "Slaying The Badger", another awesome book all about the '86 Tour.
      I became a Lemond fanatic during the 1984 Tour, Greg's first, and by '86 he was my favorite athlete. Every training ride I took was while wearing my prized La Vie Claire authentic jersey! Getting news and good TV coverage of TdF was very difficult for us US fans (no internet back then either!). These John Tesh CBS shows each weekend of the Tour were a godsend and were EPIC to us, showing us incredible footage of this mythical race halfway around the world, that we all wanted to ride in some day.
      Thanks for watching and commenting, it means alot. I have coverage of the '87 Tour up as well, and I have VHS footage from Tours thru the late 90's yet to edit and upload.
      Cheers!

    The presentation of this programme is so 80s I had to smile, the super cheesy music, the strident narrator’s voice etc. Thank god the cycling made this watchable.

      70's and 80's rocked for its simplicity and cool vibe. If you didn't live it, you can't understand it. We've lived then and now and I wouldn't be young again if it meant I didn't have those experiences then. When LeMond won the Tour, America went crazy for cycling. It was great! 🙌😊🫂

      This Tour was everything for a young American like myself, a big fan of LeMond, and got me on my bike, training and racing and dreaming of L'Alpe d'Huez!

    • @MsMars.
      @MsMars. 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Me too. LeMond was a real inspiration for so many Americans. I mean, the first American to win the Euro-centric Tour de France! It really ticked me off how Hinault played mind games with him during this race. I met LeMond twice because my cycling team sponsored a couple of local events that he was involved with. He was really nice, very approachable and fun to talk to. But he was also very focused, very driven.

    Josh Tesh's narration, Phil Liggett's urgent voice when it counts, and and John Tesh's flaming hot Oberheim synth riff soundtrack made a truly magical '89 event even more magical. Motivational TV production simply does not get better than this. This shit makes a person feel alive- to want to kick ass, break something, and get some hot @ss all at once. WOW!

    Watching CBS cover the biggest cycling race on the planet was pretty rough, but it's all there was at the time. The coverage is just light years better now and it's designed for people who know something about bike racing, not just as a mid-summer hype show diversion for football fans.

  • @silvermediastudio
    @silvermediastudio 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    I think the reason LeMond didn't chase Hinault's first attack on Alpe d'Huez was because he was thinking in a way that the older generation didn't. He knew the value of hanging back in third, drafting Zimmerman, to save his energy for the sprint and the following stages. And he knew he had the legs.
    One also has to wonder if in some way, Hinault was actually pushing LeMond by pulling away so early. Challenging him to elevate his game beyond the rest of the pack, because it's so easy to stay in the pack. By setting such a fast pace early, it gave the young LeMond something crystal clear to fight against, which is sometimes all it takes to motivate someone to excel beyond all expectations.
    And Davis Phinney is a warrior.

    • @silvermediastudio
      @silvermediastudio 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@jonmiller6633 True. But I do believe that the effect on LeMond was the same, whether Hinault intended it or not. LeMond had to earn it, to literally take it away from the 5-time winner. That makes his accomplishing all the more sweet.

    What an awesome athlete. LeMond's candor was refreshing as he voiced his frustrations. Hinault was really kind of a jerk during this race. John Tesh did a phenomenal job composing the music for this coverage.
