    I watched this so many times as a kid on my VHS player. I can still recite this video as it’s playing- almost word for word. I bought the John tesh soundtrack on cassette too. It was all so motivating for me. Cycling changed my life in a good way.

    Thank you! So cool to see this old footage. Wow, such a long time ago.
    I had the amazing luck to have been working a summer in Stuttgart in 1987. Lo and behold, I find that Le Tour is coming through town! It actually came even closer to me, as it wound through Bad Cannstatt where I lived. Then, to add to my lucky streak, a fellow worker who was a native French speaker, but an American, put on his best "bad American French" accent and we approached one of the race directors. He said, "Oh Monsieur, I LOVE France and am learning the language. I LOVE Le Tour and would like to see as much as I/we can!" The race director saw us two college-age chaps and decided we could be trusted with PRESS PASSES!!! OMG!!! Are you kidding?!!!! I was "backstage" for their arrival at the finish line in Stuttgart on day one, then backstage for the next day's departure on day 2. We were in seventh heaven!
    It was amazing walking around before the start on day 2 among the riders. I saw the 7-Eleven car stop and chat with some guy... Eric Heiden. Then I snapped a picture of Laurent Fignon sitting next to a fountain in Stuttgart's main square (off Koenigstrasse, if memory serves). I got Fignon's autograph and wished him "Bon Chance!" (RIP Monsieur Fignon!)
    Not to miss my golden opportunity, once the peloton departed Stuttgart, I hopped the next train to Forzheim to catch the peloton come through! I flashed my press pass and someone was like, "Hey, I'm not sure you can enter??" as I just walked on by.
    Wow, what pure luck to have had such a wonderful experience. My summer abroad was amazing for so many reasons, but this was definitely one of the highlights. Thank you for finding, converting and posting this video.

      Dude, that's an Amazing story and experience you had at the '87 Tour! Thanks for sharing it here.
      The CBS coverage of these Tours in the mid 80's is what got me hooked on cycling and racing. Such fun times!
      I recorded all this coverage using my at-the-time state of the art VCR on high quality VHS tapes during each Tour when coverage aired on CBS. Recently started converting all those old VHS tapes to DVD and then editing them for the Channel here. Thanks for watching!!

    CBS didn’t even mention Delgado until the 3rd week of the broadcast if I remember correctly

    • @frankducky6130
      @frankducky6130 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      that's because they built their coverage around Hampsten and 7 eleven. Once Hampsten was out of the picture they had no choice but to pay attention to Delgado.

    • @Tommyd479
      @Tommyd479 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@frankducky6130 Yep. I remember it well. I was a Delgado fan and it was somewhat annoying because Delgado was considered one of the real favorites before the race. It was all Hampsten, Lucho, Roche, Kelly, Alcalá and the 3 French favorites until Ventoux.

    • @frankducky6130
      @frankducky6130 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@Tommyd479 Yeah, I remember that Tour very well. I was 7 years old and obsessed with cycling, mostly because of Lemond. Since he was out that year my hope was that Bernard, from the same team, would win. I liked Delgado a lot too, he was such an aggressive rider.

    • @Tommyd479
      @Tommyd479 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@frankducky6130 Ha! I was 8 years old. My dad was a weekend racer so when LeMond broke through the Tour was required viewing in my house. I was drawn to Delgado exactly because of his style and at that age, I just loved the way he looked when he attacked on the bike. It began my lifelong fandom for Spanish riders who reminded me of him (ala Contador).
