  • In this video I will try to install windows 10 pro on a Pentium 4 650 CPU system! I'll possibly even try Windows 11 pro. Watch me as I try many different things to get this semi modern OS to install and work on a 20 year old CPU.
    Did I succeed or was this just a lot of self inflicted pain! Watch until the end to find out!
    Thanks for watching!

      @@RememberThisTech It is still an interesting experiment to see how far you can go with the process of a new OS on Pentium 4. I think it can be done with a Core 2 Duo CPU but i could be wrong, only tried on Core 2 Quad for a decent usage.

      @captainwasel8377 yeah I bet a core2 quad would work nice. I pulled a core 2 quad 9550 out of this before I replaced it with this sad p4 950. Might be worth a test :)

    The real problem is that your CPU doesn't support certain instructions required by Windows 10-64 bit and Windows 11, so you are able to install only 32-bit versions of Windows 8.1 and Windows 10.
    You can fix this upgrading the CPU to a Pentium 4 6x1 (631, 641, 651, ...)

    • @RememberThisTech
      @RememberThisTech  หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Hi there. Well it's possible. But I specifically used a pentium 4 650 on the basis that from what I read was that it did support 64 bit instructions. Perhaps I read wrong thanks!

    • @MultiGaetano77
      @MultiGaetano77 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@RememberThisTech Yes... this CPU already supports 64-bit instructions (you could install 64-bit Windows XP/7) but NOT some additional features required by Windows 11 and 64-bit Windows 8.1/10.
      This limitation affects all early 64-bit CPUs, for example also the AMD Athlon 64 (socket 754)

    I bet an older version of Windows 10 would work. Windows 10 needs 8gb ram in dual channel to run anywhere close to smooth. Once you have it installed then I'd overclock everything than can.

    I don't agree on not using win 10 with this pentium 4 650 cpu. Got one with win 98, xp and win 10 32 bit tripple boot and if you configure win 10 right its pretty usable for downloading and managing files. If it runs from a ssd. Got mine oced to 4.3 ghz though on a asus p5p800 with a quadro fx 3000g. The overclock makes the cpu perform at 180% with 155 watts of power draw. From win 98 to 10 i only switch ram from 512 mb to 2 gb. Win 10 pro 32 bit runs well enough. As a retro setup it fine for playing games from 1995 till 2005. Having windows 10 on there makes life much easier not having to screw around with usb sticks. However this cpu really needs a oc because of its long pipeline. Overclocking it is much easier having modern monitoring programs. Actually love that pc.

      Hi there. Nice triple boot setup you have going! I meant don't bother with Win 10 64 bit as it's a big hassle. But Windows 10 32 bit went on fairly easy. Now, all I have to do is find an ok video card with driver support. Running Windows 98 and xp on your setup must be pretty nice. One machine and all 3 os sweet! Your oc must be putting out heat like a space heater, though? What cooler did you use? What ramifications might there be having it on the web and also having those old vulnerable os on the machine? Thanks for watching and commenting. I appreciate the ideas and feedback :)

      @@RememberThisTech For windows 98 its best to disable hyper threading as it can have a negative impact on performance. Got the Zalman CNPS9500A LED 92mm on there, cpu hardly reaches 65 degrees under load. I do have a little fan on the motherboards voltage regulator modules as the mosfets went up to 90 degrees without. Now it stays at 60 max for the vrm. The quadro fx 3000g is basiaclly a Geforce 5900 Ultra and mine is oced past fx 5950 ultra speeds. These have shader model 2.0, paletted textures and table fog which some win 98 and xp games use. Cheapest option would be a fx 5900 xt by now probably. My Quadro was only $50. For ram using 2 sticks of Corsair CMX256A-3200C2 with 2-2-2-2-5 timings. Total heat output isn't that high. Whole system uses 295 watts max. Got a nice beige case with actual airflow inside.

      @@mealot7613 Not bad at all! Kinda Jealous of your video card. It's AGP right? I had a GeForce 5950 AGP back in the day. Borrowed it to a friend and he used it for years and I never saw it again :( I just looked at the prices of those and the FX 300g and they are way over $100+ so not sure I'll be getting one any time soon :( I've got a Dell with AGP and a 2.8ghz cpu, I think its socket 478, Maybe be able to drop in a 3ghz with HT and do something similar to your setup. All I have ia a PCI 5200fx, a PCI GeForce 210, a AGP ATI 2400 Pro, and a ATI 9700 Pro. I've tons of pci cards though. I'll have to research what card has drivers for 98, xp and win 10 and go from there. Id use this Mobo but then I'd have to use a PCIE card or OCI card shrug. Thanks again!

    • @mealot7613
      @mealot7613 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@RememberThisTech Yes its agp. That works best in win 98. More modern cards have much too high driver overhaed. With the geforce fx videocards you can install the xp drivers after setting compatibility to Win Xp Sp3 in win 10. I too had a geforce fx 5950 ultra back then, still own it after buying it back lol It is just capable of doing stock so i dont use it out of fear of it getting even more degradation. With driver booster it even installs a Sound Blaster Audigy 2 Zs in win 10. Your Ati 9700 pro would be a good candidate for win 98 SE and early win xp gaming, but do mount a custom cooler. Also own a athlon xp 3200+ at 2500 mhz with msi k7n2 delta 2 platinum board, same ram and a asus radeon 9800 xt, which is basically the same as your radeon 9700 pro. That pc is pretty nice too. The radeon also has shader model 2.0 only no support for table fog and paletted textures but the list of games using the last 2 is rather short. Running win 98 se and xp pro only the modded Omega drivers worked for me though. Had a hard time getting directx to work with ati drivers. The radeon is stronger in directx 9 then the fx cards and way more efficient. Fable the lost chapters from 2005 runs better on the athlon with radeon. Only the pentium 4 600 series or newer can do win 10, the athlon can't. With these kind of systems the cpu normally is the bottleneck. That is why newer videocards will not work better, they introduce a even bigger cpu bottleneck because of larger drivers. Besides games are optimized for the gpus that were in use back then. Win 98 (SE) and all the games from around that time can only use 1 cpu core, so best to have 1 really strong core, and nothing more. Also any more ram then 512 mb is useless again and will only give problems. Best to use a ssd with sata to ide connection.

    What a coincidence. Yesterday I tried instal the same MOBO with Core 2 - 2,33 Ghz. I never get into instalation screen. It BSOD me with win 10 (whea uncorrectable error), It crushed trying Win 7. It stuck up with Win XP, It Crashed Win 2000Pro, It even stucked with Linux Mint. I upgraded Bios, tried different RAM's and so on... Only OS I managed to install was Win Me.
    I have no idea what is wrong. There used to be Win 7 on that PC.

      @@RememberThisTech If I remember correctly in past I tried Core2 - 1,86 Ghz and failed also. Almost all system I tried in 32 an 64 editions. Faild in all but WinMe. It actually might be flawed MOBO, even tho most obvouse choice - bad Cap is nowhere to be seen. Or it might be overheating chipset. It seemed too high to my taste by touch. I will try to find some small fans for next try, and change thermo paste. But all of that next week or later. I have too much work for next veek or so.

      @@RememberThisTech Ha I dunno man. I kinda like having my sanity 😆. I got a few old things I'd love to tinker with, but I don't have the time for that right now. I got an old HP server with 1 Xeon but it's a 2 socket motherboard. Max I could take that thing would be 2 xeons with total of 8 cores/16 threads and, I think, 48GB. I also got an Athlon god knows what that came in a vintage Cooler Master Wave case I picked up a while ago. I have a Core2Quad tucked away as well that used to be my file server aka new fluffy name: it was my NAS. And my pride and enjoy I still need to slap back together: Opteron 165, DFI LanParty nf4, dual EVGA 8800gtx, Galaxy 1000w, Lian Li PC-V1000 which I actually found a new old stock windowed side panel last year, and a Razer soundcard. Yeah, the quad core is faster, but this Opty 165 holds such a dear place in my heart since it has the best gaming years of my life with UT2k4. I also used that Opty until about 2011ish. I've mentioned that before, but f&$k it since algorithms love replies! I have a beautiful 550 or 650W OCZ PSU that I wish I could use, but it can't take dual 8800GTXes. Sadly, I can't get into any of that now with bathroom and bedroom remodeling, and I'll be moving my office from one side of the house into a bedroom. Yes, the committee (aka wifey) has approved me designing my man cave lol. I'm gonna retire and die in this house so I gotta make it a good design. 😜
