I went from 98se to 2k myself. I didnt transition to xp until sp2 had been out for quite some time. I love & miss 2k.

Just like you. I went straight to Win2K on its release for stability and to avoid monthly Win98 installs due to monthly memory leaks. The only issue I encountered was the UMAX scanner I was using did not release Win2k driver until a year later from the release. I have seen some retro gamers build dual boot Win98/SE Win XP just to maintain game compatibility.

Hey there. Yeah, I used 2k for a while. Bought my laptop and had ME on it, and I wipped it, lol. Worked on 2k, and it networks too for years. I was working on a dual boot 98se and xp build. I was trying for a 4x or 3x boot build, but that video had hickups and hasn't seen the light of day yet, lol. I got too ambitious. Good memories, aye! Skol!

I do feel bad for Windows 2000. It came out at an awkward time. Many people were still on NT 4 or 98, then Windows XP came out 1 year later and most people just moved on to XP. I feel like 2000 never had a chance

MS literally killed "2000". But that was an experiment, more like a step towards NT for the masses. I personally was running NT4 at the time as workstation and upgraded to Win 2000 when it came out. NT4 didn't support USB, but 2000 was basically NT4, modernized, with USB support. It was a winner. I never went to XP. I went from 2000 to 2003 - 2003 was a server version, but it was "popular" back then to install and configure it as a workstation OS, and it worked very well.

    • @RememberThisTech
      @RememberThisTech 26 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

@joseoncrack Hi there. Some even referred to it as NT5. I never ran 2003 as a workstation but worked on 2003 server for many years at my job. I played some games, so I grabbed xp a bit after it came out. Thanks for watching and commenting. I appreciate it :)

@@RememberThisTech And they are right. Windows 2000 was going to be released as NT 5 - they changed the name at the last moment before shipping. I had access to beta versions at the time through MSDN, and they were all named Windows NT 5.
All subsequent versions (XP, Vista, 7, 8, 10, 11 and the server versions) have been successors to Win 2000 and all based on the NT kernel.

I went to Win2k when it came out and it was a bear to get to work with games in the early days. It took quite a while for stable video drivers to come out and I was constantly fighting BSODs trying to play games. Once good drivers came, it was definitely one of the best OSes of the day especially for its more robust networking and security.

Switched from my thrusty 440BX System to a KT133 system in 2000 and had big problems to make Windows 98 run stable. It booted only on every second try (later found out that was an incompatibility with the USB controller on the mainboard) and was running not very stable in general. Was desperate at some point of time and decided to give Windows 2000 a try. A difference like day and night. Everything was working as it should right after installing the chipset drivers, it was also running much more stable. Used it for some years until I switched to Windows XP sometime around 2004. :)

I find all of my PC CD/DVD games like DethKarz, SEGA Rally Championship, and Sonic R work fine on Windows 10.
Haven't tried Windows 11 yet, but if it's as "the same as" 10 as people say it is then it shouldn't be a problem.
Still looking to build my own Windows XP machine at some point though, I just like how simple the older OS is compared to modern ones.

Closest I own now is a Windows 98 boot CD, with I think 2/3 installs left on it.

If you're using an SSD, partition it on Windows 10 or 11, so that the partitions are 4k aligned, otherwise the performance will be lower and write amplification will significantly increase wear.

    I Still Love Win2k Pro/Server
When I got the First IT in 2k3 Job few years after H.S., WinXp wasnt the eXperience m$ was Hoping For.: DirectX 9c & SP2 made xP a Beast.
We Would Downgrade All Systems, Desktop, Field Laptop, CAD/CAM Machine & All Servers, were Win2k Pro & Advanced Server SP4.
It was Crazy Fast, Stable as Hell, Ran all the Same Games as WinXp with Less Overhead.

As amazing as 2000 was for the time (and it was indeed utterly amazing)... I just never saw a point to running it over Windows XP. Yeah, 2000 is somewhat lighter on the resources, but XP already runs soooo damn light that if you were really that strapped for resources where running 2000 would actually make a significant difference, then there probably isn't much at all you can do with that PC in the first place anyway. Windows 98 SE would be a much better choice for that kind of incredibly old low-spec machine.

Hello Jason, I went from Windows 98 SE., to XP, so I have never used Windows 2000 or ME., I had heard that Windows 2000 was the more stable of those two OS., were you able to activate Windows 2000?
Recently, after I installed XP on an old laptop I found that the only way to activate it was over the phone and what a hassle that is and I ran out of patience.
I have heard that if XP is not activated then it stops working after 30 days, is that actually the case?
I still have software from the XP era, so that was why I attempted to create a retro computer.
