  • This video is about a 2-inch (propeller size) FPV quadcopter I made. It is built around a Pavo 20 frame, with motors and flight controller from BetaFPV. It uses a Raspberry Pi Zero 2 w and a Camera Module V3 for both recording and transmitting the video with an analog FPV transmitter.
    Link to the code, 3D files, and list of the parts used:

    Here is a link to the BetaFPV store, where I got many of the parts from:

    Great work man! Maybe help me understand what does the Raspberry Pi does on this drone? I ask because if you already have the FC from betafpv you can just wire the camera and VTX to it and get it flying already.

      Thanks! The Raspberry Pi is essentially between the camera and the FC, and its main purpose is to record the video (also, the camera is a different kind, it's not an analogue camera but rather one with a digital output, designed for a Raspberry Pi). I wanted to avoid the need of an additional action camera for recording video.

    I wonder if a OrangePi Zero 2W would allow you to procees higher quality footage. I know theyre the same form factor as your raspberry pi zero 2W so you might have some luck with that one 👀

    Really interesting! What all can you do with the the raz pie and a drone? You can do other things too right?

      Yes, there are a lot of possibilities for using a Raspberry Pi in the air. What I did here just scratched them surface of what's possible.

    Very impressive! Do you know what type of range you get with this setup? I'm hoping to build one but, I just don't have the money for it right now. Great work though.

      Thanks! I use a 300 mW VTX (video transmitter) and the BetaFPV VR02 goggles. The goggles have a directional "patch" antenna inside, so the range varies depending on the relative position of the drone and goggles, with the best range achieved when the goggles are facing the drone. I haven't measured the range though, so I can't tell you exactly, but I can estimate that it is at least 150 metres, maybe 200 or more... You would get different results with goggles that use an omnidirectional antenna, such as the VR03.
      Also, if you are thinking about recording nice and crisp video, I would recommend not going for a Raspberry Pi setup... I used a Raspberry Pi because I already had one and wanted to see how good I could make such a setup, but if you want to capture higher resolution video than you see in my video you should use the more conventional setup: an FPV camera for video transmission and a separate action camera (e.g. Runcam Thumb, Runcam Thumb Pro, Hawkeye Thumb 4K, or even a GoPro if you are making a bigger drone) for video recording.

    Great work! How's there no loads of latency with the RPI? Every time I used one for video, the latency was unbearable

    • @arturpekosz
      @arturpekosz  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Thanks! I'm assuming you used Wi-Fi to transmit the video, which does give very bad latency. I used an analog FPV transmitter hooked up to the analog video output of the RPi.

    • @arturpekosz

      With the Raspberry Pi you could have digital transmission through Wi-Fi, although the latency would be much higher, which is why I used analog transmission. DJI and Walksnail are able to achieve a usable latency through more advanced protocols, designed especially for video. Personally I'm not bothered with seeing analog video in the goggles, as long as the recorded video doesn't have the analog artefacts.

      @@arturpekosz I’m not an engineer of any sort but just stick a antenna on it

    • @arturpekosz
      @arturpekosz  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      @@BlenderSometimes That would improve the transmission range, and maybe the latency at long range, but even with the receiver very close to the drone the latency would be too high. There is a reason why people who fly racing drones use analog transmission and not Wi-Fi, despite the inferior image quality, or the more expensive DJI/Walksnail/HDZero systems.
