- Not great news for Moosie…but considering the alternative ….we are grateful.I guess we are all a little optimistic about things like this…it’s human nature. After a talk with each other and our 6 children… and some time to absorb the doctor’s words…we have decided to choose ACCEPTANCE and our continuing QUALITY OF LIFE…with support and love from our family.Join me today for a chat about this…and some happy visits from children ,grands and great grands. ❤️

Oh Nanny, you have talked to us as you’ve never talked to us before. Of course you’ve never been in this situation before, with your whole heart. And my whole heart goes out to you. When I went through a rough time many years ago, there was something I read that said,”acceptance brings peace”, and I meditated on that and understood what that meant and I did have peace. The video you showed of Moosie was great to see. He looks great. So much better than I imagined. Thank you for sharing that. You are just one of the most blessed families I’ve ever seen. And I know you are thankful. This will surely keep you busy, which is a good thing. Everyone is making the very best in this situation. Moosie’s being taken good care of. So...he may have to stay in a neck brace a long time. BUT he's not paralyzed, he still has his sharp mind & wit, he still makes people laugh, and he can still love. More blessings than calamities 😊 Attitude is EVERYTHING in healing! So glad he's choosing to take the high road. Hope he continues to work on those muscle groups that will help him be able to come home. Every day is a new day with its challenges AND it's blessings. It's all up to where you put your focus, and I believe you guys are on the right track!

Yes. I have often thought of it since I spent 2 years in the neck brace. Honestly, I focused on feeding my 2 kittens a few months old. And connecting my friends together to be nursemaids to help me stabilize the neck and keep it clean as required to let me go home. I still rehab and fall a lot so I quite totally relate. I am on my 1st travel by train and eager to see my own aging family remaining.

I am sorry that the doctor had to deliver such harsh news. God works miracles. As Bill gets stronger and works through a daily routine, I am hoping that you will get better news way before 6 months is up. Maybe small increments of time without having to wear the collar continuously and eventually not have to wear it at all. Prayer is a powerful thing.

Dear Nanny, my heart goes out to you and Moosie. I doubt if you remember, but when I first ran across your channel (drawn in by your enigmatic title “Crushing Our Eighties”) I was recuperating from a fractured pelvis. I was walking a tightrope between pain and fortitude. I learned Moose’s story and he immediately became my hero. I thought - this gentleman, who is 15 years older than I am, has not only endured pain worse than mine, but emerged from it victorious! I thought about this everyday. I repeat, Moose is my hero. Imagining his journey kept me going. Now Moose continues. He’s a role model for quality of life. I’ve never met either of you, but you both have been with me for years and given me strength through a better perspective. Thanks to both of you.
That said, all my life I’ve been a fan of facial hair on men. In my opinion, Moose is strikingly handsome with a beard.
I’m sending my sincerest love to you two, who’ve kept my compass directed toward Quality of Life, no matter what life delivers.

ACCEPTANCE is a very powerful word. God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference. This prayer is like my daily mantra. Moosie's acceptance of his condition has already put him on the road to healing and positivity.
The alternative would have been to be miserable and affect the loved ones around you. God will give Moosie, you and ur family the strength and grace to go thru this journey together.

Oh my. You and Moose apparently handled this better than I am at the moment. I consider you both dear friends even though we have never met, and I am so sorry it was not happier news from the doctor. I was hoping that Moose would be more comfortable as both of you were also. So much thrown at both of you all at once. I am hearing you say that you are both being optimistic and so I will be happy that you both seem at peace with things. God bless you and Moose with many many more happy years.

I had cervical spine surgery 1 year ago Sept. 21. I have made a full recovery, but I have to say that the worst part was the 4 weeks following in the hard neck brace! It was worse than the surgery. I am so sorry for Moose! I feel his pain. Prayers for you both.

Hi Nanny! I'm so sorry about the news the doctor gave Moosie and you. But, you have a great attitude and outlook about it and I believe that's what will make the necessary healing happen. What a beautiful family! The little girls are precious and Dane plays so well. You are so right that family is the most important thing and just enjoying the little things, little pleasures that happen and being grateful for them. Thank you for the reminder about that! This made me very sad. Even with acceptance, there’s sadness, and loss. Thankfully you are both determined to make the best of a bad situation. I have done that when my back was to the wall twice, and came out ok, although changed.
One suggestion for Moosey. Audio books for his book reading. That will give his arms and head a rest for when he wants to concentrate on news or something that requires more concentration. Creative ways of adapting can go a long way, and being able to do as much of what brings you joy as is possible is so important.

You know, the doctors wanted to keep Dad in the hard brace as well. He broke the top two bones, 1 & 2, coming out of his skull. I think Moosie broke the same 2. All breaks are different probably. To give him some quality of life, we along with doctors, settled on using the hard brace at night when he slept in the lift chair and whenever he got up for bathroom, car trips, etc. Otherwise he had a supportive soft collar to wear when just sitting and watching TV and eating so he could chew easier. He liked the support of the hard brace at night and enjoyed the soft collar for comfort. You may want to bring this option up with doctors at some point. I know it's difficult but it will improve. Some people fit some foam or something inside the hard collar. I believe you can find this online where they sell these.

You are so positive.. it helps me. I have had 3 surgeries for tumors on my bladder in the last year.. now again next Monday. I am 81 with health problems. I didn' t know if I should do it again. Decided to do it. I am glad you all had a good time with family.

Oh Nanny…I don’t know what to say. I’ve read so many of the comments and I agree with them all. You know how WE all love you and are continually praying for both of you…AND your wonderful family. I’m sure it’s hard for your kids to see their Daddy like that however the way they allllllll rally around you both is something we should all strive for. Everyone can see that the “apples didn’t fall far from the tree”…you and our Moosie are the roots and the branches. You’ve raised wonderful HUMAN BEINGS and, they in turn, have raised their children/grandchildren/great grands in your blueprint. What a blessing. I hope you’ve been sharing my extra smooches with him! May our Lord keep you wrapped in his arms and give the doctors the wisdom to do the best for Moose. I'm sorry to hear about Moose's doctor visit news and that he's not through with the neck brace yet, or "out of the woods" like my dad used to say.. They kind of have to give you the worst case scenario though. But I think Moose looks good, as though he's turned the corner to recovery and healing. I think he will improve in time, and may not need the neck brace at all. There may be a phase eventually where he wears the brace part of the time. Who knows? I think the doctor is going to be surprised. That's my prediction. Moose has a strong spirit, positive attitude, and a very supportive wife and family who loves him. It's called the TLC factor in medical terms. Tender Loving Care. Anyway, I'm sending healing prayers his way from Wisconsin for a successful, speedy, recovery. I was watching the end of the video with all of the antics and clowning around Moose's bedside, and I thought Nanny should make a blooper video sometime in the future. Not that you don't have enough to do going on. Again, sorry to hear about the setback for Moose, but I say gray skies are going to clear up. Hes going to bounce back. Maybe just take longer than originally planned. Fun to hear the trumpet concert and see the grandkids all around. Looks like you had a full day. Take care Nanny. Hava good week. I’m sorry…try to invent something that will hold a book or his tablet so he can read…you said he was a voracious reader…there’s probably something out there …we will continue to pray for you both…this is minor compared to Moosy but I have such a terrible curvature of my spine that I have to wear a hard back brace…it’s the hardest to dress…what to wear with the darn thing…hang in there Nanny ..I love you.

As so many have commented....we ALL are so concerned for Moosie and you as well....BUT your wonderful optimism and the support of your amazing and loving large family are the best medicine for Moosie as he navigates these challenges. You and your wonderful supportive family are 'the wind beneath Moosie's wings' What a wonderful family gathering of love and support on Sunday. You could see the joy and determination in Moosie's face. Acceptance of the challenges in life is not giving up but finding new ways to cope and find joy in the small and beautiful things in life and that most certainly is the love and support of family. Nanny, you should “search” iPad holders. I have one and it also fits my nook. It has a clamp on one end (I attach to my headboard, but you can attach to other things like a table) and it has a long adjustable arm with several hinges. It is wonderful!!! I can read, play games, and watch TH-cam without having to hold the iPad. Best of all: it was $11! Priceless, as they say 😁 I think he would love it. THANK YOU for sharing your thoughts.
