Caught Black Drum, Sea Mullet (Southern Kingfish), a Cobia and Lizard fish with sand fleas in Atlantic Beach, NC yesterday. Had a Pompano the day before and it inspired me to try again.
I really watching y'all. I have learned alot and y'all are helping prepare for my first saltwater fishing trip. I graduated from Fayetteville North Carolina so I kind of consider myself a local. So I like seeing another Carolinian helping out. Keep Pounding.
Kristi & Jeff...Wish you had explained to fisher-people new to fishing with sand fleas how to hook them. If you don't hook them through the head like you quickly showed they will burrow themselves and your hook. They are amazing diggers and if hooked through the rear they can and will definitely dig. Great video. Aaron told us you were at the OBX. Wish we could have met up! Maybe at the next 1Fish2Fish bash!
I am so jealous!!! What a beautiful day on the beach. I always enjoy the two of you. Reminds me of my wife and I 42 years ago. Where i fish in NC we called them sand fiddlers and those fish were called whiting. I caught my PB whiting 3 weeks ago at Ocean Isle NC. It was nearly 23 " long. I also caught my PB speckled trout, flounder and Pompano on that trip. I think the fact that fewer folks are fishing this year due to the virus that stocks are up and fishing is great. You both stay safe and well. As I've said before you need some little fishermen in your family. You'd be great parents!!!
After getting my lifetime saltwater license for my birthday, yesterday my wife suggests we go to the beach and I do a little surf fishing. I remembered watching this video, so I said "Yes!" Took one of my 12' carp rods, which, by the way, works pretty well as a surf rod, caught a couple sand fleas, and, within a few minutes , was surf fishing for the first time in 40+ years! Only fished an hour, but caught a very spiny blowfish and one roundhead. It was fun, it was easy, and it worked just like your video said it would! Looking forward to more saltwater adventures. Love to get into some redfish!!!
Those are usually known locally as “Whiting”. I guess technically it is a king fish, Southern, Northern and Gulf each have distinct characteristics. All three can be caught along the southeast region. I like to fillet mines and keep the skin on. Those are my winter go to fish when the bite is slow in the surf along with Croaker. These are in the drum family and they get pretty big too.
@@treauxvidieaux5668 I like to catch the big bull whiting at night. They’re delicious filleted with the skin on. Probably the easiest thing to catch on old leftover shrimp and squid. During the hot and muggy summer months like this, I hit the bridges and fish from dusk till dawn. These guys bite consistently all night. The mangroves, drum and trout get less active the big bull whiting will hit all night. I’ve filled my cooler up.
@@EricFortuneJr. right on. I've caught some big ones out in the surf, over 15". That's good size for Whiting. I fish at Surfside beach and San Luis pass mostly.
@@treauxvidieaux5668 Same here , grew up in L.J. and whiting are really good table fare , never understood why so many people threw them back when the trout bite was off due to the usual sandy water . San Luis Pass is great when the tarpon roll in and bust the crap out of the mullet on a incoming green tide !
I go to Corolla every year in August. We fish almost everyday.. we’ve caught maybe 5 fish in 5 years. We use high/low rigs, 1-3 oz pyramid weights, and all types of frozen bait from the bait store. I haven’t seen live bait at the bait shop. Should I switch to lures ? I’m headed down in about 30days any advice you can give me to help me out?
Love how strong mullet hit sometimes they deff make ya wonder if it could be a drum lol well enjoy it yall and tight lines I'm off to Nags head for another Kayak adventure
Yea guys! good work catchin them "mole" crabs! Love the OBX, cant wait to be down there in a few weeks! You two showed me how to finally catch real fish there! thanks! from NY!
Thought I seen y'all down there but wasn't for sure. I took my brother and his friend to the pier that day, smoked the blues that morning and got about 10 mullet for the cooler. The fish were right off the first edge, water was insanely clear that day.
Good video as always. Have y'all done an obx kayak fishing video yet, or have I missed it? I'm new to kayak fishing, but not new to obx fishing. I'm an hour from Whalebone junction, and fish the obx frequently. Most of the time I'm on that pier, looks like i need to stay on the beach. Tight lines y'all.
May I ask what wind direction that day that makes the water so clear? And was it incoming tide? I'm wondering because I never see Sandbridge that clear.
From what I have seen on OBX (at least the Duck beaches) is a LIGHT Easterly wind clears up the water and warms it up. SW or strong westerly winds turn it over making it cold and dirty. Not always the case but I spend a fair amount of time flounder fishing from the beach and it is best when water is not too stained
This is great, I've got an OBX trip coming up and I'm going to give it a try. May I ask what size hooks you're using, and how much weight? Looks like an ounce or two?
Great video. Love the sound of the Surf (I am Landlocked but grew up in Padre Island). That water looks damn good for a lemon-rig with live finger mullet wading out a little bit and chuncking it out there.
You can use fish gills or a small slice of fish just stick it in the sand with a small stick and watch it you'll catch endless amount of them very easy
I haven't fished salt water in many, many years, but you have whetted my appetite to do so! I have a rod and reel that will work; all I need to do is fork out $35 for a lifetime saltwater license and make up some homemade high-low rigs like you demo'd in another video. Looks like fun!
Yankees have no idea what a mullet looks like and yes you are correct we have both in the surf in Texas and they are two completly different fish and mullet do not feed on your bait , the only ones I ever caught was with a cast net or a drag net !
You can use a cheap metal frame hand bait net like you keep in the boat. You can sift the sand away in the water like the rake but it takes up far less room in your gear. It gets bent a little bit but not too bad if you are careful.
Yes. Most of the time I'm throwing a 1/4 oz on top and 1/8 oz on bottom when rigged tandem. When using a single rig, I normally throw a 1/4oz. It really depends on bait size and target species. Sometimes I'll run a 1 oz -1/2oz configuration. Anything heavier is a bucktail/trailer combo.
All you have to do is look for "V" shaped ripples (tip of the V pointing toward land) as the water recedes from the beach. The sand fleas are straining the water for food. Just scoop under the "V" shape and you got yourself bait.
Nice video, that was pretty close to a citation at 7:55 I was down there about a month ago and smashed em', hoping to get back in the next month or so. See you all around
I own a sand flea rake company and Thanks to you, I am now out of business. Thanks jeff and Kristy. You can find me on the soup line down in the bowery.
Every time I have been to the outer banks of N.C. the water looked liked muddy shit! Your "Sea Mullet" is known as Whiting in Florida. And if you employ a sand flea rake, like the old salty guy, had, your bait catching will improve x10. (×50 at night!)
The Menticirrhus americanus, southern kingfish, southern kingcroaker, king whiting, Carolina whiting, sea mullet, or whiting is a species of marine fish in the family Sciaenidae. It lives in shallow coastal waters on the western fringes of the Atlantic Ocean. Be nice, he is as correct as you are!

We call them whiting in Texas
I was going to say that as well. I am from TX originally.
Yes sir and their damn good to eat. Sometimes you can catch the Bull Whiting and that's alot of fun. Get the cornmeal ready (YUM)!

Newport News for sure!
Have you guys tried the VUDU shrimp? they were great for me off the surf. Caught trout, flounder, and a spanish.

I go to the obx for vacation and stay around waves - Salvo area and looking to find new fishing spots other than running up to the sound to fish
I made a sand flea rake from a old minnow pot I cleaned up from the Elizabeth river.
What pier is that? Jeannettes?
Were you letting it sit or slow rolling it in? Great vid the family are heading to oak island this weekend and plan on giving this a try

The rake method seems to really get 10-20 of them per scoop
But yea catching them by hand is fun
Can't wait to try this!! Thanks for the tip! Keep on Keepin on here in NC!
I know the seafood restaurants are amazing in the OBX but, the next time you're there go to Slice Pizzeria! It's the best pizza on the east coast!
