I spent every summer of my youth with my grandparents on the east coast of Florida by Jensen Beach. We caught sand fleas and would catch whiting by the dozen. I’m 60 now, but those are some of my best fishing memories . Thanks for the flashback!
I find large sand fleas on the lip where the water breaks on the beach. About a foot farther out than you were digging. By far my favorite bait. I've caught bull reds, big uglies , slot reds pompano and hopefully I'll add sheepshead to that list soon. Tight lines!!!
Planning on a trip in a few weeks to Corpus as winter has been unusually mild. Your videos have given us some great info on baits from fish bites to the sand fleas. Thank you
Hey Matt, like you I was surprised to catch a nice 17" pompano last Tuesday (2/28) while fishing over the Orange Beach inshore reef nearest the Marina Rd. boat launch. My first inshore pompano.
I love your cart setup! I used to bucket it. As a kid I always enjoyed surf fishin..except for the bees! Really love monk fishin too but could only do that at -1 to -1.5..that like 5 x a year. Love pool fishin for rubber lips but teally gotta watch that tide or the hunter becomes the food! Good one!
Two January's ago before the red tide swf was hot pomps, permit reds hopefully things will recover in time. Hopefully the red tide doesn't get that bad again. Bocca grande is still no where near what it used to be. Good fishing dudes🐟🌴💨
@@ia6980both are fine, but one I’ve experienced made me sad. Some guys caught a 45lb striper and left it on the rocks to die. I found it the day after at their fishing site
When you were showing how to hook a sand flea, all you mentioned was to be careful not to crack the shell. Are you bringing the point of the hook from the bottom, through the digger, and out the rear, top, of the bug?
I was thinking about you when I went to Walmart it's 2022 now and it's winter but I don't fish in the winter but I went ahead and bought me some lures because I haven't lured fish before , so I'm going to get my license and I'm going to see if I can catch me some largemouth or some trout this year !
What brand circle hooks do you use? Maybe it's the camera and hook sizes vary based on manufacturer. What i see dosent look like a size 2 hook. Maybe a 2/0.
I literally have never beach fished in my life haha but I’m for some reason drawn to your channel you’ve inspired me to do my own beach fishing when we go to gulf shores in March , maybe post my own video to my channel 🤷🏻♀️
i really miss living on the west coast im still in oregon just literally the farthest part from the coast . of course theres some good fishing here, and the snake river is only two blocks away
Was on the OBX Sunday and a lady taught me that you have to dig at least a foot to get to the big sand fleas.. She was right! I caught a couple sand fleas the size of golf balls..
Do you still get catfish in the winter? I went surf fishing the other day (in Texas) and didn't get a single cat fish and caught some whiting. I normally get a few catfish.
Why do you have a bead above your hook? Really enjoy your videos. I'm from Michigan and head down to Ormond Beach every April.... Surf fishing the entire time!
Nice pomp this time of year. Do you use the steel head rods for casting top waters and lures in the surf. I was looking at the Wright mcgill rods for r iui n and gunning on the beach.
Lol, my only question is, and I hope that they come foward, but probably won't because they're scared, is who in the world would dislike this or any of your videos? 3 dislikes from who? Aside from my venting about all of that, awesome video Matt! Awesome to see that you can still haul em in during these months! :)
I wish I was there to take those fish off your hands and eat them myself!! What a great video. Those whiting were absolutely beautiful. We don’t see those southern kingfish with the tail spot up here in NC. They really were quality fish. Very good video!
Style.. lighter weight than traditional "surf rod" better action for smaller fish like whiting and pompano. Some of my surf rods are so stiff you would never know if you had a small whiting on the hook
Can you tell me what kind of knot do you use is it a Snell that you use with your circle hooks also how do you hook your sand fleas through the Digger tail of the shrimp or what
Dude...I thought I was doing something wrong, and I was, I forgot to take my flee color off digging in the sand...sorry bro couldn’t help myself. Loved the video, I love those Pomp’s , great battle, and even better on the plate. You mentioned a couple of times you are using a steelhead rod, did you do a video on which one you are using? I always thought that would be an ideal stick for this type of fishing.
Great vid man.. Bout best one of the winter months so far.. I know it gets rough this time a year.. I bet you wish you was Keepin fish on this trip though😂

Great video Matt! I felt the adrenaline rush too! Good fishing day indeed. Liked and subscribed! Watching from the Philippines. 🇵🇭

I’m pumped after that video. Hope the weather holds up this weekend
Sitting in Chicago watching this video wishing i was there.
Good job Matthew
Gulf of Mexico looking good!
Scott from Kentucky

You are killing me, man! Can't wait to get down there in April and fish with you. Great video!
Your nailing some damn good fish ( Whiting and Pomps) ; I can smell the cornmeal in the frying pan. Well-ddone Bama Beachster!
11:28 I died!😂.....there is nothing better in fishing than when your catching really nice size fish 1 right after another.
Merica!,, love the fact that you can still find solitude

One of my best days fishing ever was surf fishing in Ormond BY the Sea with sand fleas. I caught lots of HUGE Redfish on them!
I caught 2 whiting this morning, sand fleas really work.
Two January's ago before the red tide swf was hot pomps, permit reds hopefully things will recover in time. Hopefully the red tide doesn't get that bad again. Bocca grande is still no where near what it used to be. Good fishing dudes🐟🌴💨
About to try sand fleas for the first time this week at Wrightsville Beach, NC. Can't wait to see how they perform at the jetty!
How did u do?
Catch and release no problems there. Good sportsman showing you can enjoy nature and be respectful. Can't wait to see some more videos!
Catch and cook, see no problems there either
@@ia6980both are fine, but one I’ve experienced made me sad. Some guys caught a 45lb striper and left it on the rocks to die. I found it the day after at their fishing site
Sand flea is one of my favorite baits up here in Va. black drum red drum striper and everything else eats them.
When you were showing how to hook a sand flea, all you mentioned was to be careful not to crack the shell. Are you bringing the point of the hook from the bottom, through the digger, and out the rear, top, of the bug?
I would think so that's how I would do it

Great job...
Pompano was a nice catch...
Enjoy that Lunch!!
Sweet! I use them for perch on the west coast, thanks for the video.
It's a pomp!!! Wasn't expecting that. Good on ya!

Another great surf fishing video. Congratulations on your first pompano of 2020 .
Nice Pom, we need about 6 more for a nice meal. Great video!
Way to go Matt. Nice whiting and a fav " Pomp " ! Yea I new that one was coming home, way too god to put back. Enjoy yer self, Tom Daytona Beach, FL.
I literally have never beach fished in my life haha but I’m for some reason drawn to your channel you’ve inspired me to do my own beach fishing when we go to gulf shores in March , maybe post my own video to my channel 🤷🏻♀️

Thnx for video! Qs pls, So u used regular raw shrimp from store? Not a ghost shrimp for bait?
A unexpected, exciting Pompano.
Nice. I was pumped for you. I felt the excitement 😂
Was on the OBX Sunday and a lady taught me that you have to dig at least a foot to get to the big sand fleas.. She was right! I caught a couple sand fleas the size of golf balls..
Great vid! Congrats on the pomp!
I think you’ve told us before but what are those “steelhead rods” outfits you were using?
Awesome thx!! Makes me want to drive the 5 hours to go fishing!!
Champagne and Pompano...Nothing like it.
Great job on the Pomp.
Bama whama those fish
🦀🦐🐛🐟 🌴💨
"we're keeping him" HAHA Nice.

Tyler Goodrich same here, I fish on the east coast in Florida
It's a Pomp! Another quality vid Bum 👌
As always, loving the vids man
Need to try this next week😂
I've actually caught sheepshead on them from the beach !
Never had much luck on sand fleas. Great video though!👍👍👊
When I mess with a sand flea I have to drop it in the sand three or four times before it goes on a hook. Is that just me or do you edit that part?
Why do you have a bead above your hook? Really enjoy your videos. I'm from Michigan and head down to Ormond Beach every April.... Surf fishing the entire time!
Nice pomp this time of year. Do you use the steel head rods for casting top waters and lures in the surf. I was looking at the Wright mcgill rods for r iui n and gunning on the beach.
We call em Sand Crabs in Cali. Still great beach baits!
Pomps this time of year!? What were the water temps? Makes me want to get out there sooner than I had planned.
What kind of rod are you using since you talk about how much extra fun it is when catching whiting?
good video.....what brand of beach cart is that?
Lol, my only question is, and I hope that they come foward, but probably won't because they're scared, is who in the world would dislike this or any of your videos? 3 dislikes from who? It's three jealous people. That's all.
I wish I was there to take those fish off your hands and eat them myself!! What a great video. Those whiting were absolutely beautiful. We don’t see those southern kingfish with the tail spot up here in NC. They really were quality fish. Very good video!
What a nice fish!
They must have heard you say you could not keep fish that day. Will have to try that.
Use to use sand fleas for Pompano.
🇺🇸love seeing you having fun out there Matt 😎🤙 surprise pomp was nice!
I've never surf fished like this but is it possible to catch Whiting and pompano in the northern outerbanks?
Great fun video. I'm trying to understand what you mean by a steel head rod. Is that a style or brand name? I did some research but still confused
Style.. lighter weight than traditional "surf rod" better action for smaller fish like whiting and pompano. Some of my surf rods are so stiff you would never know if you had a small whiting on the hook
What a great day of fishing!
Gotta get the soft shell sand fleas they are great bait
Can you tell me what kind of knot do you use is it a Snell that you use with your circle hooks also how do you hook your sand fleas through the Digger tail of the shrimp or what
Are you fishing in the Fort Morgan area?
Yes
I have seen some guys cut the sand fleas in half to distribute more scent. Have you tried this technique?
Thanks for the videos love them
Woo Woo free bait.
What's up with you and the blue heron? They seem to follow you around.
Awesome video!
My first saltwater fish was a whiting I caught surf fishing with sand fleas and squid
Have heard you mention these steelhead rods you use. What brand/model are they?
New sub here! Great video! Just moved to Pensacola...have a lit to learn. Like that beach cart
Good fishin'!
Do you ever freeze fish or always it them the same day
Dude...I thought I was doing something wrong, and I was, I forgot to take my flee color off digging in the sand...sorry bro couldn’t help myself. Loved the video, I love those Pomp’s , great battle, and even better on the plate. You mentioned a couple of times you are using a steelhead rod, did you do a video on which one you are using? I always thought that would be an ideal stick for this type of fishing.
😆
That's a great bait . I used them in California.
All of my biggest pompano have been caught at the shorebreak in the evening
It seems like for pompano I've always had better luck with one or 2 little ones on a hook than one big boy, wishing I was out there with ya!
Are you using your Steelhead rods?
That looks sooo fun!!!
you are waaayyyy tooo happy.....congrats. it was a good fish story of 2020....Hope u have more
Nooo such thing man especially fishing the surf..
Love taking a trip to the beach during the ol lunch break! Keep up the vids! Ever fished Myrtle beach?
I never have

Will the live sand fleas stay in that little basket or will they crawl out eventually?
great video buddy!!!
Do you have links for the steelhead rods you're using?
VERY NICE POM , GOOD FOR YOU !!!
Dang bum. On the day you can’t keep fish you finally catch some decent whiting. Glad for you .
