I actually did enjoy Linus "selling" these non-high-end parts to me way more than these "we have the ultimate high end system for 30.000$" Reminded me on where this channel came from, and the way it went, like scrapyard wars It was quite refreshing, keep these videos coming.
Linus gets so happy building pc's like this. Glad to see another budget build guide. My PC from the last build is still running great, due for it's second upgrade after getting a better PSU
A even R9 270x or GTX 660ti type of graphics card will let you play at least at high settings above 30fps: Hard West, XCOM2, GTA V, Wasteland 2, Tides of Numenera, Disco Elysium, STALKER games, Starcraft II HotS, Wasteland 2, Dragon Age Inquisition, Dying Light, E.Y.E. Divine Cybermancy, Endless Space 2, Stardrive 2, Crusader Kings II, EU IV, Planescape, KOTOR II, VTMB, Homeworld Deserts of Kharak and Homeworld 2 remake, Outlast 2, Pathologic, Satellite Reign, Tropico 6 (and every other Tropico game), Cities Skylines, Fortnite, Dawn of War II, Company of Heroes 2, The Division, Battletech, Call of Cthulhu, Dishonored series, Endzone a World Apart, maybe Farcry 5 (and anything less recent), Darkest Dungeon, SOMA, >Observer, F.E.A.R. 2, Amid Evil, Dusk, Seven, Grim Dawn, Gris, Journey, Thea 2, WH40k Mechanicus, Little Nightmares, Magic the Gathering Arena, Mafia, No Man's Sky, Stygian, STASIS, This War of Mine, CSGO, Sunless Sky, Opum Magnus, Cliff Empire, Battlefleet Gothic Armada 2, Atom RPG, Cliff Empire, Cultist Simulator, South Park, Darkwood, Alien Isolation, Eurotruck Simulator 2, Galactic Civilization III, Metro 2033, Deadspace 2, Fallout New Vegas, Tyranny, Dungeons 2, Doom (2016), Microsoft Flight Simulator X, Kerbal Space Program, Elite: Dangerous, and basically pretty much any game Ssethtzeentach, Mandalore, and Grimbeard talks about among many others. So yeah go ahead and tell me you can't find good games to play on cheap old hardware))) That's to say, it may not run the newest games but older games don't keep requiring better and better hardware to play at 1080p, and, that's to say, there's some not only GREAT titles out there but also you can literally game a bunch of those at 1080p on even a R9 380 or GTX 780 on ultra settings provided it's got the API support and doesn't run out of VRAM (this makes nVidia sucks at this, bad Vulkan support and limited VRAM makes their cards worth much less than used Radeon cards) so, so long it doesn't require 4gb+ of VRAM and it doesn't require DirectX 12, and doesn't matter to you gaming at 1080p, you can play pretty much anything on $100 graphics cards so long it's not Cyberpunk or Red Dead Redemption 2 or something. Linus did a great video about this too, where some of them age really badly more from bad API/driver support. But, even then I can liteally play The Witcher 3 at 1080p with a GTX 660ti at medium or high settings and get playable fps, so who give a fuck. Or, a used gaming laptop with an old GTX 970m, or a Radeon 270x, or if you have R9 380x or 980ti or RX 470, you can play at even higher settings and higher framerate. This is what the corpos doesn't want you knowing about: you don't actually need to have the highest end or even new hardware at all to have a really great time playing great games.
@@vollkerball1 Why would it? These are completely normal temps. A single fan doesn't suck anywhere near as much air to cause a problem. PSUs are built to handle acting as an exhaust.
@@vollkerball1 That 650W psu will probably run at 50% of its capacity during load with this configuration so it should stay cool enough even when acting as an exhaust.
I remember two years ago when they did the $500 budget build, I nearly followed it spec for spec, and it was great for a starter pc to get started and since then I’ve found my way into building pcs for lots of people and I love it. I’ve been a huge fan of ltt ever since and I thank you all at ltt so much for showing me the way
As an IT Field Engineer, I can verify that "Percussive Maintenance" really does fix a lot of problems. My favorite is picking up an Oki-320 printer and dropping it from 8 inches. Works every time!
Percussive maintenance tends to fall either at the very beginning or very end of things... in the beginning, its THIS IS IN MY WAY at the end its like, well, I can break this more so I can replace it, or knock something either back into place or loose, and maybe it will work. Just don't leave boot prints in the printer, voids your warranty :)
@@akiraigarashi2874 Pretty much. The bar got kicked real low by the GPU shortage. Though there are some mildly concerning trends in the upper tiers where cards are becoming significantly more power hungry with each generation in order to keep showing the expected improvement (and justify their price tag).
i ain't gaming, but this guide inspired me to find such a great deal over at a local used hardware shop where they had an already-built system for 230 USD with - b450 steel legend motherboard - ryzen 5 3600 - rx 590 - 650 watt power supply - 16GB DDR4 single channel memory (I know what you guys want to say, but I'm happy for this config for upgradability) and I'm stoked to have my first 'custom-made pc' (made by someone else) that I use for software dev and some light ML tasks.
Wow, thats basically exactly my old rig that I bought back in 2019! Its great, you're going to love it. Only reason I even upgraded my GPU is because of AI & Rendering and thats it.
I feel an old school LTT challenge coming on, you should do a challenge with teams, all pulling different second hand hardware sites out of a hat and see who gets the best bang for the buck depending what 2nd hand site they used!
I love linus's energy, however I can't help but get annoyed every time they make this kind of video. Whoever they have in charge of buying these parts as if they are the best deals isn't very good or aware of the best products for the price. Like saying your only storage options at the $55 price range is the P2 or SN570 or even worse an HDD... When you can get an XPG SX8200 Pro for the exact same price which has a DRAM cache and MUCH faster writes. Or for $5 more you could get a WD Black SN770 which would blow all of those options out of the water.. GPU is preference but I would rather get a 1080 over a 2060 as it gives more raw performance and more vram for the exact same price used. Sad to see people already forgetting about one of the best GPU lineups ever made just because it doesn't do raytracing or DLSS
@@pcmasterracetechgod5660 agreed linus doesn't really care and its all crappy deals on new parts anyways, if you really wanted to make a 500$ bang for your buck pc you'd go ebay used for everything except maybe storage and power supply
Watching Linus take the hammer to the PCI slots totally reminded me of the time Jake watched in horror as Linus drilled a hole in Gigabyte's "stealth" case.... and then moments later he mentions "speed-holes" and the editor blessed us with getting to watch it in its full glory. Thank you! xD
I hope that embarrassed Gigabyte into fixing that case soon. Such a big content creator just slaughtering the front of the case was absolutely hilarious to watch.
@@jinx8624 If you haven't seen that video the whole point was that the case had like no airflow, and he was so mad at the case maker that he drilled giant holes in the front in front of the fans just to get airflow. He wasn't suggesting anyone do that with their brand new rig, he was saying not to buy such a stupidly designed case in the first place. Same could really be said for this case, there's no reason they couldn't have designed it with just a bit more airflow in the front and budget gamers shouldn't have to deal with that lack of care
So realistically, if you don’t want to gamble on second hand hardware, this will probably run closer to $600, perhaps $700 once you account for tax and shipping, still pretty decent!
What's to gamble with second hand hardware? If it breaks within first 30 days (you should have it stress tested and know any problems by then) you get a full refund with eBay?
Man it feels good to have 500$ builds again, back in 2015 I built the Borinator that you and Austin built for 500$ it was a joint Christmas present between a lot of my family, and I absolutely loved it! It's currently a massive reason I'm going to college now for Computer Science. It's so nice to have these relatively affordable builds back so kids like I was, can be inspired again.
@@Ghost-vd5mc Yea it should be able to play GTA 5, I saw a video of this GPU playing at 1440 Very High getting around 70-80 fps. So with the weaker CPU you should be getting probably about 55-60fps which is really good
@@Ghost-vd5mc Yea it should still run great, especially if you're just using a standard 1080p monitor then you're gonna have a ton of headroom to install mods
Just started my first build, got a 1070 for $100 and a i7 8086k for about $170. I'm pretty stoked to actually have a PC now and hopefully upgrade to a 3000 series by the end of next year!
Nice! Congrats. Yeah I'd say older GPUs going 3-5 generations back is really great for 1080p, only TDP become an issue when you find really inefficient 980ti and have to reconsider PSU setup like on reusing the dangerbox on an XPS or Optiplex to power everything with 460w, otherwise 980ti/1070 for $100 is where the market is at now and it can well play almost anything you throw at it. 4k RT is memes. Costly memes, made out of caviar and gold toilet seats. For normal people a really fantastic gaming laptop or desktop rig can be had for $300-400 using used parts. If my laptop can play Witcher 3 at least at 40fps on high settings I am happy with it)
LTT should do a budget pc every 6 months so that we "the poor people", can see it , and do an upgrade to our rigs watching Linus drop things... LOL. Is about time LTT do a video like this one , not everyone that see you videos can buy a 1000, 800, 600 or even a 400 dollars GPU or CPU purchase . My desktop has more than 8 years ... and still works fine. Congrats.
I am currently gaming on an AMD Phenom II X6 1100t. However, the bottleneck with my 1060 3gb is real. But yes, new budget PC every now and then would be AWESOME.
The timing on this video is insane. I have been playing console my whole life but I finally saved around 500 dollars for a pc. Thanks Linus for showing the world the capabilities of cheap builds
I definitely foresee one of these in my future. I've been wanting to build one for a while but didn't want to drop $1500 in it. I'd like to see linus do a build comparison of $500 vs $1000
Just ordered my dad some parts for a pretty baller sleeper rig based on some of these recommendations. Thanks, Linus and co, you genuinely helped me save some money on a project.
I love seeing "it'll get you there" PCs again. I expect render times wouldn't be great on this system, but it will get the job done. I'm tempted to see how much more it would cost to get this into a SFF build.
Ironically, it would be easier to build a SFF build with parts like these, instead of trying to cram high end hardware into a small case. The lower CPU thermals and smaller GPU mean you need less cooling and less space, which is incredibly important with SFF builds.
@@alexlowe2054 honestly the CM nr200 is amazing in that regard, small enough o be sff big enough to fit a 6900xt and 3090 , as well as a 280mm aio, i carry it around with me everywhere when travelling
@@jasonselsley if I'm being honest, i wouldn't even touch those given the firmware issues users have reported. as of now the ASRock offering is honestly a lot more compelling as it's priced similarly now.
I don't know, Linus slaughtered the competition in Halo during that Gamer GPU tournament thingy they did a while back. I think he's better at FPSs then he leads on.
@@Nagol93 A large part of him sucking at games is probably he sucking at playing and trying to follow a script/talk to an audience at the same time. Watching something like a GDQ (which has honestly felt a bit weak in recent years) some speed runners can talk and play impressively well at the same time while others will have a team of people that have at least some knowledge of the game to explain things. Even with a team they rarely do their best while playing at an event because it's harder to focus.
I wish you guys also showed alternatives for if you can splurge a little bit or if yiu need to cut back show some cheaper alternatives that may be posaible
You nailed it! Just a few days ago told my "still waiting" friends to check ebay for last gen GPUs. Models other than the 2080ti. FPS/$ have gone wild there. Budget class of the current gen was the only one that made some sense to buy so short before release of the next gen. Because it's usually delayed. Right now last gen pricing is kind of killing that budget class too.
My brother has recently built his first ever budget build PC. He had some headaches mainly because of his lack of experience, I tried my best to advise him but without getting too involved as this was a learning experience for him. I've just shared this video to my brother to show him what truely can be achived when you've gained that all important EXPERIENCE.
It makes me happy to see budget builds. Sometimes it seems like tech channels focus on the high end stuff too much. Don't get me wrong, if I had that kinda money floating around, I would build a high end PC. However, most people don't have that kinda of money. They have kids and other responsibilities.
ya i find it strange that whenever they mention budget hardware on this channel they say stuff like “save up your lunch money” as if the market for cheaper stuff is kids and students and not adults who just have other financial responsibilities and can’t drop $1000+ on a pc
I don't have much money, only around 300 bucks, and this has made me happy seeing that you can run some demanding games with only 500 dollars! That is amazing thanks so much for making a video of this it really helps!
@@comiumapedra5397 Or build this system now without the dGPU, saving that $200 for now until prices comes down even further, while still being able to do do some light gaming now on the iGPU.
I still think you should avoid that case. With literally any cheap mesh front case you can upgrade without the PC bursting into flames. Otherwise, the 10$ case winds up in a landfill or something, or in your closet for eons, or piled up at a recycling center.
I just had fun seeing this was possible again. I spent WAAAAY too much for my 3090 because of that darned newegg shuffle. Here's to hoping I'm never in the "I kinda need a new gpu" place when this is going down again. May just start timing my upgrades at the tail end of each generation. Glad for those that waited and glad for those wanting to get into pc gaming.
If you're in the market for top-of-the-line gear like a 3090 then I don't think I feel bad for your wallet xD It's the folks that are "splurging" to pay $200 for a used 1660 that I feel bad for.
Pick up your cross and follow Jesus! The world is quickly headed for destruction, and sooner or later you will have to sit at the judgement seat and give an account for your actions. Belief in messiah alone is not enough to grant you salvation - Matthew 7:21-23, John 3:3, John 3:36 (ESV is the best translation for John 3:36). Call on the name of Jesus and pray for Him to intervene in your life! - Revelation 3:20. Contemplate how the Roman Empire fulfilled the role of the beast from the sea in Revelation 13. Revelation 17 confirms that it is in fact Rome. From this we can conclude that A) Jesus is the Son of God and can predict the future or make it happen, B) The world leaders/nations/governments etc have been conspiring together for the last 3000+ years going back to Babylon and before, C) History as we know it is fake. You don't really need to speculate once you start a relationship with God tho. Can't get a response from God? Fasting can help increase your perception and prayer can help initiate events. God will ignore you if your prayer does not align with His purpose (James 4:3) or if you are approaching Him when "unclean" (Isaiah 1:15, Isaiah 59:2, Micah 3:4). Stop eating food sacrificed to idols (McDonald's, Wendy's etc) stop glorifying yourself on social media or making other images of yourself (Second Commandment), stop gossiping about other people, stop watching obscene content etc and you should get a response. Have a blessed day!
LTT actually built a realistic budget build for once with used parts? Good job!. Also it looks like older gen graphics cards are much more resiliant to wear since they're not pushed to the limit out the factory and bigger process nodes mean bigger mass to cope with wear.
I don't know if I'd exactly refer to 20-series cards in a "back in the good old days when people knew how to make GPUs"... they're literally just one generation away from current gen.
@@FeintMotion your not wrong. But my point was on wear, not yields and quality control. Modern stuff seems to just degrade a lot faster. I guess that's what happens when you run at max temps and voltages.
@@FeintMotion Don't I know it. Had to RMA my EVGA 2080 Ti twice before I got a functional card, which is still thankfully going strong (knocks on wood).
Oh excellent! Used that case for my first media server. lots of dremelling to make it breathable. Was able to get three drives in there, with room for one more. Ended up replacing with a case (and board) that natively supported 10 drives, with lots of ventilation. Fractal Node, natively has 6 slots for 3.5" drive support, but with room around the other half of the case for two more.
If someone see this and see that maneuver on case with some shielded top with some circled metal. What's better to do is lean down your gpu upon installation where that shielding can't be detrimental to gpu slots. Works better than bending or cutting it.
I always like seeing these budget builds. I'm starting to build my own PC right now, although with a bit of a higher budget, around $800. I'm building it around an RX 6600 I got on Ebay for $250. I'm using a Ryzen 5 5600x, but honestly I kind of wish I had saved a bit of money and gone with the 12100f. It's an impressive little CPU. But either way, I've always had to game on either Geforce Now or an Xbox and I'm excited to have my own system.
Tbh the 12100F’s 4 P-cores are going to become a bottleneck well before your 5600X’s 6 core for gaming. 4 cores are not enough sadly. The 12400/F would be a decent choice though
I have a pc with these same specifications brand new parts and it cost just 890~ and the performance is impressive. I absolutely recommend it. Also, I have the same problem of case blocking hdmi lol.
I was able to get a Titan Xp on eBay for $320 including tax. Not bad for a 12GB card with at least as much raw power as a 2080. And I've seen 1080Tis and 2070 Supers for ~$300. Midrange builds are finally looking good again!
I would definitely spend the extra couple of dollars and get a case that has actual airflow holes. You might even find one with a filter if you're lucky.
Just bought everything except the case which was out of stock, had to go with one on ebay for $25. Ended up getting the 2060 for $225 and the intel i3 CPU F SKU for $110. After tax and shipping everything totaled out to $649. Excited to build this!
It's really, really nice to see a feature on something that doesn't cost 30k and need bespoke solutions. Don't get me wrong, that stuff's interesting too, but for those of us who are in the poorhouse, this content is what we need!
I would be interested in a low budget home-lab/homeserver without video encoding use-cases. Would you go intel or amd? would you pick an older cpu, or picking the newest cpu for better efficiency? What spinning rust or ssd would you choose, ssds with dram cache or without? Spend extra money on 80+ gold or even better? What software would you choose? TrueNas, TrueNas Scale or something else? What about backups of this in the cloud for a good deal? How to setup that server and backup plan.
Depends on if you want just a NAS or an actuall Server. Flr a NAS, build something around a Raspberry Pi, or get a prebuild NAS. The energy efficiency just kills it long time there. If it also needs to act as more than a file server, go for AMD, they are significantly better performance per price and watt in the midrange for the last cuple of generations. Plus you can consider an APU from AMD. Great to get cheap power if you got ML, video editing or other tasks than can be at least partially thrown at graphics cores. As for drives, DRAM-less SSD's are fine for stuff like a drive for games, but bad for boot drives/drives where a lot of temp cruft goes to, and boot drives. Depending on your specificc use case, the cache can eat 1+ GB of writes per session that won't drag your SSD's lifetime down. Othersise, spinning rust is still by far the cheapest if you want plenty of storage and speed isn't as much of a concern. Or ckmbine a small SSD with Dram for boot/programm drives, and chuck HDD's jn for everything else as needed. Finally on the PSU, two big recommedation: roughly estimate your peak expected power draw after choosing your other components. Then get a PSU that is a bit above that for safety, but not to far ahead. E.g. if you expect your max draw to be 200W, look for a 300 or 350W PSU. Remeber, those 80+% efficiency gurantees only apply at 20% and upwards load of the PSU. They are often much worse when they 'idle' so to speak. Then look at your average expected draw, and how much you think you'll use it. Then it's just simply looking at the specs for efficiency % for better quality PSU's, and electricity costs to calculate if you benefit from a really good one. Otherwise, stick with Gold, or at least silver simply because they tend to last longer in use hours than the brinzes and whites.
Just want to expand on what Jeff said: If you go AMD and get an AsRock motherboard, you can actually use Unbuffered ECC RAM for a theoretically more fail-proof NAS. AM4 is a great socket for CPU options as well; Ryzen 1000 and 2000 series chips are quite inexpensive right now, and moving up a tier, 3600s go for as low as $140 on eBay; 3700Xs for ~$170. It's a great way to get a system that can do a little bit of anything. If all you want is a moderate amount of storage and speed isn't too important, a Raspberry Pi could definitely do the trick as well. If you're interested in that route, I'd recommend you check out Jeff Geerling here on TH-cam. He's got some useful content on RasPis as NAS servers. Just keep in mind that a Pi takes a bit of know-how to set up and can also be a bit of a pain to find the right boards for. I wish you good luck on your server journey!
Hey team! After watching this video I am going to build pretty much the same PC. All up I have priced it to about $850 NZD or about $530 USD, with a slightly better SSD and case. I was inspired to build it after watching your video, the last time I built a pc was about a decade ago! Thanks for the video!
Yeah for real, my main advice to anybody watching this is DON'T BUY nVidia FOR ENTRY LEVEL SYSTEM! GTX 1630, GT 1030, it's practically ewaste and and cards like RTX 3050 are HORRIBLE value that cost nearly $400 in some cases but while delivering extremely inferior performance to a $200 used 5700XT or 1080ti, or RX 6600 etc. It's mainly older systems imo that is useful for nVidia parts mainly because they have so crippled VRAM and often bad driver support etc. helping lower value, but I still sometimes see really stupid pricing. Like 3080 10gb is last gen, it still cost its $700 MSRP in some places, it doesn't even have enough VRAM to run The Last of Us remake, and yet it costs even more money as a last gen card than the GTX 980 cost at retail when it launched. A lot of people say Pascal was the best but honestly other than 3.5gb scandal I'd argue Maxwell was one of best GPU generations ever made, it's higher performing and ultra efficient, scales well and much better than 700 series did on mobile, it's still relevant. The main thing I see people doing wrong is trying to buy brand new recent nVidia cards, which are horrible value and there's really no point because nVidia is much slower than AMD at that level. It's only at the halo level nVidia makes the fastest video cards. At entry and budget level, and sometimes even midrange, Radeon AMD makes faster GPUs for much cheaper. It depends where you are on used market, sometimes even older GPU is stupid prices but, on other times you can find much older nVidia GPUs that are really great value like the GTX 980ti. It's incredible you can make x2 GTX 980ti for SLI for only $200 now 😂
I remember last year I was looking up videos on 500$ pc builds and they mainly used a ryzen 3 apu with a ssd and no gpu. It's so bizarre to think that was the best you could get with your money
I really love this build, my current / first computer I built has specs that cost a bit more than this, and I got a mined 1070 just before the shortage. It was very obviously mined in with a lot of visual damage, but there is a lot of price-to-performance in crypto mining cards. Mine lasted me for two years (it still works, just trying to sell it) up until I got a 3060 ti a few weeks ago
gotta love how this is a year old and now 16gb ddr4 is like 30 bucks, and a 500gb m.2 is like 20. Also you can get better than a 2060 for like 80 bucks now so thats cool
The timing on this video is incredible! I literally started designing my next upgrade today. I'll be keeping my old 1660 Super since keeping old parts is free and free is cheaper, and pairing it with a nice i5-12600K. Makes me feel great about my choice if four of those cores are already awesome, and I'm getting six, plus four efficiency cores too! Power prices are a bit crazy in Germany right now, so efficiency cores and a platinum power supply sound like a great choice in the long run... or even by the end of the year at this rate.
Nice, I have a somewhat similar build with a 3060 Ti and i5-11600K. I built mine before Alder Lake was officially launched, but even then, I probably would have still gone with the 11th gen. My i5 has been absolutely fantastic for the year that I've had it. I figured by the time I need to replace my CPU, I'll probably need to replace my motherboard too.
@@everettrailfan I'm in the "replace my motherboard too" stage of life right now! I'm running an i7-4790 on a cheapo motherboard from 2012 with 16GB DDR3 RAM at just 899 MHz. It very much is just a matter of pulling the decent video card out along with the big SSD and making a whole new PC out of everything else.
AFAIK E-cores do nothing for gaming and are just there for productivity, so it isn't more more efficient cores, they just serve a different purpose. I don't think 12th gen is super efficient either, but I might just be looking at the 12900KS too much. Still it should be more efficient than whatever you have now, and a platinum supply will do you good
the 1660s (1070) is good if you cap fps to 60 or even go lower to 45 or 30. Depends on what kind of game it is, turned based games are playable under 60 fps
The wd blue sn570 should be much faster than the p2, especially given that the p2 was silently downgraded to qlc flash cells on top of its already dram-less status.
I used this video as a guide, but i sprung for a 12600k with a be quiet pure rock 2 cooler and a zotac 3060ti. And that just goes to show you the computer in this video is a great entry level option with a super easy upgrade path!
It's a rewarding experience. If you haven't already get yourself a anti static wrist strap and mat to protect components. At least use the strap or just keep grabbing the case prior to inserting your hands and components in there. If you make a check list of each step you completed it makes it easier to troubleshoot shoot in case system does not boot on first try. Whatever you do keep your fingers away from any exposed pins of device add-on cards. The oils from us dirty humans can give problems for proper connections. Have fun! 😁

Linus should do a video where he compares every 500$ PC build he has done, and show how much more 500$ has gotten you or how much less it has gotten you
I'm likely going to get a couple of the parts I need, and it'll be very cool, it's going to make graphics less ancient, and I won't have to struggle on 20 fps trying to play a minecraft game or 5spf in any Gmod map ever. My Optiplex 780 from a couple of decades ago will be perfect once I get my ram sticks and graphics card.
@@KayleighOwO The cheapest RTX3050/3060 is less than a 2060 at the moment. The cheapest prices are on wootwear or evetech but you could try matrix computers whenever they have in stock for the cheapest at R7K. That's about $455 for Americans, 45% of our price goes to import taxes
Re- ex-mining gear, Bulidzoid (actually hardcore overclocking) recently did a pretty useful breakdown of what graphics cards to avoid and which are pretty safe
I love these videos. They tell me what is acceptable to upgrade to, and I've been desperate to finally upgrade from 900p to 1080p, but my 1060 is too slow to handle 1080p acceptably.
Man this brings me back to desperately trying to scrape together money for Q series quad cores for systems to play like MW2 at like 40fps. Now after working my ass off, I got a 3080ti 5900x system. We've all been through the hustle just to play games we love. These budget videos are always lots of fun
and most times, in those hustle life, we don't realize we lost the time and peace of mind to play games. I remember playing games at 15-30ish fps and somehow still enjoy that time more than 200fps nowadays
GPUs are coming back down close to MSRP as we speak. Also, everyone keep your eyes out for the crazy deals. I just picked up a brand new 3080 for $290 on Amazon. I was afraid it would be a scam but it actually wasn't. It was actually a typo on their end. 290 was meant to be the price off not the selling price. Fortunately for me they still upheld the order.
Love the build part of the video, but I would love to see you guys during the testing, open other programs in the background such as discord and a chrome tab and then test performance. With the new hardware I’m sure it’ll do just fine but it’s much closer to a real world use case
I mean, I have discord and 100s of tabs on my phone, sometimes with a pop up video. I give the pc just as much, more. At this moment though the different LTT vids are comparable, if he changes the standard, then it doesn't relatively compare. I imagine labs will bring the juicy data, clean vs dirty.
I just picked up a basically “brand new” used Sapphire Nitro+ 6700xt yesterday to replace my vega 56. Oh what a difference. Best 450 Ive spent in a while. Wish it couldve been less but Im happy with it
I'd follow this build pretty much exactly - except upgrade to an Intel i5-12600K and a gently used RTX 3060. Not a huge amount more $$$, but way better for intensive games n' light productivity (although I might also hold out to beg/ borrow/ steal a few more pennies to also upgrade the Mobo to one with M.2 Gen4 support). Just imo.
Sorry but the 12100 is stronger than i7's from a few generations back such as the 6700k. And that cpu is no slouch. If you just do some gaming this will be almost overkill for all but the most demanding titles.
I love how the Core I3 is once again shown some love! It's not as fast as it's higher end brothers, however it seriously packs a punch in games if you give it the chance.
Until it runs like utter garbage in 2-3 years. In processors, the price jump isn't as big as on GPU, and it can make a bigger difference on the long run. Talking from someone who used a 4790k for 6 years as a workhorse/gaming setup. I mean, since he went to the trouble of buying used hardware, he could've used a 10400f + B460 motherboard or a R5 3600 + B450/B550 motherboard, and have 6 cores/12 threads which will hold better...
@@TheMC1X you serious fam? Alder Lake will indeed still gonna make this quad core age well. A PC with i7 7700 has the same single core prowess of i3 10100F can be found for under 250$ and just slap a freaking 6600xt and you will still get one hell of a ride.
Just a quick tip for anyone considering this, your upgrade path with h610 is gonna be bad. The moment you put in a 12900k into that PC, you'll absolutely destroy your PC thermals, vrm and psu. By 13th gen, Linus most likely meant you can upgrade to a 13100F, or a 13400F.
No one that will buy a 12900k will buy a B or H series board. Unless you are going AMD you can use B series cause they are basically as good as X series.
@@rosswilson1915 Not unless you want a fire hazard in your home. if 4 cores already reach 80c, then 10 or 12 cores will easily reach 100c. That case is too small to fit a decent air cooler or have AIO support.

Linus gets so happy building pc's like this. Glad to see another budget build guide. My PC from the last build is still running great, due for it's second upgrade after getting a better PSU
A even R9 270x or GTX 660ti type of graphics card will let you play at least at high settings above 30fps: Hard West, XCOM2, GTA V, Wasteland 2, Tides of Numenera, Disco Elysium, STALKER games, Starcraft II HotS, Wasteland 2, Dragon Age Inquisition, Dying Light, E.Y.E. Divine Cybermancy, Endless Space 2, Stardrive 2, Crusader Kings II, EU IV, Planescape, KOTOR II, VTMB, Homeworld Deserts of Kharak and Homeworld 2 remake, Outlast 2, Pathologic, Satellite Reign, Tropico 6 (and every other Tropico game), Cities Skylines, Fortnite, Dawn of War II, Company of Heroes 2, The Division, Battletech, Call of Cthulhu, Dishonored series, Endzone a World Apart, maybe Farcry 5 (and anything less recent), Darkest Dungeon, SOMA, >Observer, F.E.A.R. 2, Amid Evil, Dusk, Seven, Grim Dawn, Gris, Journey, Thea 2, WH40k Mechanicus, Little Nightmares, Magic the Gathering Arena, Mafia, No Man's Sky, Stygian, STASIS, This War of Mine, CSGO, Sunless Sky, Opum Magnus, Cliff Empire, Battlefleet Gothic Armada 2, Atom RPG, Cliff Empire, Cultist Simulator, South Park, Darkwood, Alien Isolation, Eurotruck Simulator 2, Galactic Civilization III, Metro 2033, Deadspace 2, Fallout New Vegas, Tyranny, Dungeons 2, Doom (2016), Microsoft Flight Simulator X, Kerbal Space Program, Elite: Dangerous, and basically pretty much any game Ssethtzeentach, Mandalore, and Grimbeard talks about among many others.
So yeah go ahead and tell me you can't find good games to play on cheap old hardware)))
That's to say, it may not run the newest games but older games don't keep requiring better and better hardware to play at 1080p, and, that's to say, there's some not only GREAT titles out there but also you can literally game a bunch of those at 1080p on even a R9 380 or GTX 780 on ultra settings provided it's got the API support and doesn't run out of VRAM (this makes nVidia sucks at this, bad Vulkan support and limited VRAM makes their cards worth much less than used Radeon cards) so, so long it doesn't require 4gb+ of VRAM and it doesn't require DirectX 12, and doesn't matter to you gaming at 1080p, you can play pretty much anything on $100 graphics cards so long it's not Cyberpunk or Red Dead Redemption 2 or something.
The PSU acting as an exhaust is definitely helping with the temps.
@@vollkerball1 Why would it? These are completely normal temps. A single fan doesn't suck anywhere near as much air to cause a problem. PSUs are built to handle acting as an exhaust.

What a heart warming video seeing Linus so excited that budget Pc's are back
I love linus's energy, however I can't help but get annoyed every time they make this kind of video.

Watching Linus take the hammer to the PCI slots totally reminded me of the time Jake watched in horror as Linus drilled a hole in Gigabyte's "stealth" case.... and then moments later he mentions "speed-holes" and the editor blessed us with getting to watch it in its full glory. Thank you! xD
Funniest thing is I actually had to do the same thing to that case. It's a great case with nice features, but that metal fold is a problem!
I hope that embarrassed Gigabyte into fixing that case soon. Such a big content creator just slaughtering the front of the case was absolutely hilarious to watch.
Whats the video?

Why? the 5600X is better than the 12100F, maybe I guess for the upgrade options in the future
Tbh the 12100F’s 4 P-cores are going to become a bottleneck well before your 5600X’s 6 core for gaming. 4 cores are not enough sadly. The 12400/F would be a decent choice though
@@yokieaig yeah just because I could keep the mobo with a 13th gen upgrade, and I would save money
The original 500$ build was my first build, though i edited the price to 650 back then. Love this series
I bought 1050 ti for 330$ last year :) for me it was either that or no gaming for a whole year :(
Happiness in Linus Eyes really shows he's love and Passion for PC'S irrespective of the Price/FPS etc
He's the happiest with either hardware that costs hundreds of thousands or 20 year old tech that you can find on ebay for $30 in box

Building PC's are back on the menu boys!
It’s been so long since LTT has been able to stretch their legs in the budget department. Glad to see you’re able to get back to those videos :)
Yea
Last year I bought my gaming PC with shit specs for a grand :)

Crazy seeing Linus go for intel and recommending their stock cooler. Loving the competition
yeah time changes
I really love this build, my current / first computer I built has specs that cost a bit more than this, and I got a mined 1070 just before the shortage. It was very obviously mined in with a lot of visual damage, but there is a lot of price-to-performance in crypto mining cards. Mine lasted me for two years (it still works, just trying to sell it) up until I got a 3060 ti a few weeks ago
gotta love how this is a year old and now 16gb ddr4 is like 30 bucks, and a 500gb m.2 is like 20. Also you can get better than a 2060 for like 80 bucks now so thats cool
Is this still viable?
If you haven't, if you oc your 1660 super you get performance close to the 2060
AFAIK E-cores do nothing for gaming and are just there for productivity, so it isn't more more efficient cores, they just serve a different purpose. I don't think 12th gen is super efficient either, but I might just be looking at the 12900KS too much.
Still it should be more efficient than whatever you have now, and a platinum supply will do you good
the 1660s (1070) is good if you cap fps to 60 or even go lower to 45 or 30. Depends on what kind of game it is, turned based games are playable under 60 fps

i have this cpu and board arriving later today. i've never built a pc before but i will copy what linus did and hopefully it will all work!

Sorry but the 12100 is stronger than i7's from a few generations back such as the 6700k. And that cpu is no slouch. If you just do some gaming this will be almost overkill for all but the most demanding titles.
