    Hi Phil
Johny Rae sang “White sport coat,Pink Carnation “ used to sing it myself at the big old dances when I was the “singer” in the band great memories the days when couples danced together (no cell phones).
Like the look of those bud vases and flowers might just have a go with the flowers tomorrow,
Another new idea to try,Thanks for sharing ,I know your name now we’ve seen a good look at the face looking good for it’s age

I think spray painting them in mass after they are off the lathe would give you a smooth coat. 🙂 I like them with wood showing and even if it were just on a bare dowel would be cute! Thanks for this one. Made me smile.

Nice flowers. There is a tool design from Germany, by Hans Wiedemann, that is a modified skew specifically for making flowers and Christmas trees. It has a hook shape on one side that helps roll the "petals". For colour I have used dye after installing the stem I dunk the flower in my mason jar of dye, it gets colour right down into the flower. Well done thanks for sharing.
Ps, I cut the base bevel before cutting the petals to reduce breaking the bottom petals when parting.

Phil that was very cool. You make it look easy. And you have given me another idea. I have to admit I have borrowed {stolen?) some of your ideas. But there are very few original ideas around.
I think it is great to share ideas and this is a great source for it. Now if someone would post an easy way to collect the shavings from all these turnings. I have been working on confining the areas that they can go to.
    Great job!

Hi, nice job Phil, love the end result. Hey if you guys come up with a way to contain the shavings, patent it, I have to swim through shavings whenever I visit my son's little garden workshop, I'm amazed he hasn't drowned in them lol.

I have been collecting hard wood so that it will be dry for future projects. Sealing the ends with Anchor Seal or wax. I know I have a long wait. In a couple years I will be 70 and fully retired with a lot of projects both wood & metal to occupy my imagination. Early next year I will be 45 years with the same job/company (I have never been late for work ever). My life long "hobby" has been my work so not in a rush to stop. Never late in 45 years? That is an amazing fete! At the job I retired from I was never late in the 20 years I worked there. A sick day here and there, but never late!
I think a positive mindset is key to a healthy life and I know you know what I mean.

Howdy Phil ..... I always like making those marigolds.... Made a bunch of them while back.... They are fun to make different sizes.... In the backyard I got all kinds of different type of wood , actually weeds growing really big diameter half inch to 3/4 to 1 in.. I tried many different types some turned out pretty easy , looked nice..... I also I made tulips out of black walnut,, cherry, maple in Mahogany......... Made some roses a while back also...... I can send you pictures if you'd like .
My sister-in-law really like them even my brother.... he's working with wood all his life and he was impressed.... He never did too much lathe work , only when he got a order to do banisters .
I had a bunch of wooden chopsticks , they work great for stems , tapered end helps a lot . I also made some leaves , I glued on the stems . You can buy perfume that you can put right on the wood and it will smell like a flower !!
Your flowers look really good , make a bunch pretty quickly . they do make a great gift . especially if you know someone that has a hard time growing flowers in their house .

I'm so glad you decided to try these flowers, Michael! I found them to be pretty easy. I wish I had time to make a ton of them as gifts but it just isn't happening. I would love to know how yours turn out, maybe a picture. Thank you so much for your subscription, as well! I will try to be worthy.
      Phil

madronawoodworks Hi Phil, I made some more flowers yesterday out of lime wood and my wife seemed pleased, I don’t know how to send a photo sorry but thanks again, by the way one thing I did do differently was I drilled into the centre of my wood before I turned the flower and it made it easier for me.
      Merry Christmas
      Michael

    Hey Phil,
Pretty nifty and very crafty flowers!
I love your weed pots too!
In the video where there is no audio I think the guy was showing what and what not to do with the skew.
In the first portion of the video he showed that the skew was pushed straight toward the chuck which was the wrong way to do it.
In the second part he showed that he moved the skew in an "arc" as he went from right to left,,,which was the correct way to do it.
In any case I think your flowers came out great! I laughed when you said you were going to ask your wife's opinion!!! LOL
    Thanks for the video,,,,,
    Tom

I did notice his skew motion, Tom, but I didn't realize the first time was the wrong way. I also notice he has a skew with a curve to it and thought that's why he was moving it in an arc. I do just push it strait in with my straight skew and it seemed to work, well, for me. Who knows!
I ask her opinion all the time. I just don't have good design skills or artistic skills or whatever you call it. I'm glad I've got her to go to! Hahaha!
Thank you so much, Tom, for watching and commenting!

      Hi Phil,
I don't really think there's a right or wrong way to make these flowers.I think it's more of what you personally want your flowers to look like and yours look great to me!
I've made a lot of copper roses and every time I make one it comes out looking different then the others I made before. They all look good to me mainly because they are supposed to look natural and nature takes many, many different shapes and sizes within the same type of flower!
I guess if we were looking for something to do that has to be perfect every time we do it we would be cutting diamonds!!! LOL
      Have a good-un Phil,,,

Ya know, Tom, I think you posted something on Al's page or a comment somewhere and you gave a link to some of your work, like the flowers. I never got to see it. Could you provide it to me, please?
I agree, perfect would be boring!
      Thanks, Phil

I've made flowers out of copper and wood.
I'll try to put links to them here but don't hold your breath on my computer abilities!

    Are you sanding the backs

    • @PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop
      @PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop  5 ปีที่แล้ว

With a sharp chisel, no need to sand. If memory serves me, I may have had to touch up a couple but generally, no sanding.

Lovely ,but like you said they are wood ,let them look like wood. I would love them not colored so they look like wood flowers. Well maybe have a few colors mixed in with natural color flowers.. I do love them.
