Lovely bowl Billy, I too love the spalting although I haven’t turned any myself yet.
Thanks, Pamela! I've found that with many species if you leave logs in any length laying out for about 6 months or so they will spalt naturally. The trick is to process them before it goes too far and they get punky (like I did on many of these pieces of maple).

Nice looking little Maple bowl Billy, I would rough turn the bowl before stabilizing it, at least one side anyways, I needs to get that stuff too.

Very pretty bowl Billy. Great job on getting the glue block on. I used my cole jaws once to get a lost tenon back on a turning. But you got yours plenty close.
Not sure I have seen cactus juice but if you need a vacuum chamber I don't have one of those. Not sure I have room for another toy.
I have thinned down brushing lacquer 50/50 and brushed as much as I could into soft wood and it did help in the sanding.

Thanks, Gary! There are also several wood hardeners on the market, like Minwax Wood Hardener, and I have and do use them on occasion. But usually when a spot is just too punky for the two methods I've shown here. And they do a fairly good job. But they can be a bit pricey. Not as pricey as a vacuum chamber, but still. LOL

Billy so could you use the vacuum pump on a lathe? Mine came with the spindle setup.

@@ThePapa1947 Yes, Gary, I bought my vacuum pump years ago for just that purpose. Finally got a vacuum chuck setup last year, but haven't taken the time to set it up. But I will.
That bowl with its finish is just fine for a candy dish. M&M’s and most candies are made with shellac. Once it’s cured it food safe as long as you don’t cut into or chip the finish and ingest it.
Yes, Dara, but the oils I finished the piece with don't actually cure like shellac or oils with dryers in them. Thanks for watching!

Beautiful piece of spalted timber turned into a piece of simple elegance. What is the term you used describing something in the interior of the bowl after polishing with Howards feed n wax? It sounded like shitoyas? That's a new word on me. Well done sir.

Hi Billy, I loved your singing and your sense of humour but more than that, as I've already said on Instagram that bowl is stunning. I have 3 pieces of Spalted Beech which are currently at 25% moisture so I will turn them wet and hope for the best leaving a 10% rim width all the way round to hopefully avoid too much checking and finish them in a few months time. I have a truck load of punky spalted maple. Guess I need a tanker truck of cactus juice.
That's certainly on e method, Rick. But here I tried to show one other alternative.

I’m with Billy. I just use shellac and saturate the piece. I have used Cactus Juice, but it is way too expensive to do much.
Billy, I’m assuming that is a Powermatic Lathe. I am about to take the plunge to a big lathe! Please give me your overall opinion of the Powermatic, it’s main downside is the cost, as it’s one of the more expensive lathes on the market. I’ve got about a $5K to $6K budget but of course the less I spend on the lathe purchase the more I can spend on the “goodies” that go with it!
Yes, Charles, it's a Powermatic 3520B. I love it! Bought it new about 15 years ago. I also bought the new Powermatic 2014 when they came out in May. Yes, they are expensive, but well worth it. If I had could justify the additional expense, I'd get a Robust. But they are typically around $3k more. So my advice... if you don't have the money for a Robust or Oneway, buy a Powermatic. I doubt you'll be disappointed. I know I haven't been... with either of them.

On punky wood I get a much cleaner cut using a push cut. Maybe just me but pull cuts don’t work as well.

What is CA? What are using to seal the grain?
CA is cyanoacrylate... aka super glue. I will sometimes use it to stiffen and harden the fibers of punky (really soft) wood. I also use a diluted shellac for the same purpose. I used shellac to seal the grain.

Yes, I have a vacuum chamber. Haven't used it yet for stabilizing, but it will happen.

It broke because you were using what I call the Russian roulette chucking method. NEVER let opposing jaws hit directly into end grain. That applies for both a mortice or a tenon.

@@ahsquared1, the silicone ring doesn't worry me. It will rip away easily enough and I bought it for that reason. The gold bracelet will as well and I can't get it back on by myself so it stays. Thank you for your concern!

I'll tell you what was going on with your speech problem, the fumes from all that CA you applied, I nee dto find some cheaper way of buying CA if this is teh way to treat spalted wood
Yes, CA fumes really get to me. When I'm using it, I always have a fan blowing from behind me and my dust collector on to pull the fumes away from me. But it sometimes isn't enough. A wood hardener is also good at stiffening soft grain, but it can be harder to find. The best price on CA I've found is from Starbond. Another turner has a discount code for it, but I can't remember who at the moment. Maybe Kim Tippin.
