Woodturning some of the coolest Spalted wood I've seen !!

  • I've had this half Ash log lying around in the workshop for a couple of years, it has some really cool spalting and I wanted to try and show it off. I thought a Natural edge winged bowl would look good and I could keep the original shape but it was not the easiest thing to turn, with the wings to deal with and it being an end grain turn ..

Some times I want to scream stop, your shaving all the beauty away, but then I stop and tell myself, nah he's just enhancing the awesomeness of the piece the deeper he goes. ❤️❤️❤️

I cannot wrap my head around the part where you thin the wings - seems impossible to do (and not overdo it), but you somehow manage to stay in control - love your work!

I was afraid that the wings would go flying any time soon. Spaltet wood is not the strongest and the wings are across the grain 😬 but everything stayed in one piece! What an awesome result

Fungi or stress, either way, that tree had a rough life. It has a chance to shine again given what you’ve just created. And for a split second at the beginning, I thought you were making a propeller.

Here's an idea. Take a wooden semicircle, divide it into two parts and arrange them diagonally. Fill the empty parts with epoxy resin, preferably of different colors, and turn it into a plate, for example.

Andy, your creativity is one of the things that attract me to your videos. I really like to turn spalted wood myself, even though it comes with its own set of difficulties. For example, I am very familiar with the need and practice of using a thin CA glue to stabilize the wood (after getting a rough shape) to keep it from breaking apart. I assume, based on the shavings you made afterward, that's what you were brushing on the outside prior to finishing it. Because your videos not only inspire but teach (whether you intend that or not), I'd like to suggest that when you do something like brushing something on that you show the product or at least add text to the screen explaining what it is so others may learn from it. Another beautiful piece.
