I LOVE it! I watched your video 3 times and just finished my own- with a twist. I added 3 legs to the bottom and shaped my whistle like a rocket. A Christmas gift for a friend’s little boy.
Hallo Tomislav, another Great Video. When I was younger we used to carve them ourselves out of elder branches until my Brother came to the idea that i can turn one. I turned it for him. Nice to see that you are making these!
I think in near future parents will send me rather angry emails😂😂, let me know reaction of the kids when you make it,as even better the parents 😅 Thank you Randy as always for watching and comment
Fun project Tomislav! Really like the use of these projects for skew practice. I made several of these a while ago and they are a lot of fun to make. If you drill a small hole about 1/4 or so down from the cutout, you can get a two note whistle. When I made mine, I didn't use them as skew practice -- need to do that in the future. I really like the design you used around the mouthpiece -- sanding that shape really makes it look good.
Thank you, Sir!!! I have watched several of your videos now. I so appreciate your attention to detail, your tool-work, and helping me understand that it’s not enough to just make things functional, but that the details do make the difference. It is also of great comfort the way you empower confidence in your viewers. Your patience with your work yields awesome results.😊
Followed your video and made my first whistle from a piece of beech I recovered from a downed tree on my property. Came out pretty decent and sounds great. Thanks pal!
Great project and I can't wait for my nephew to love me and my sister to curse me. Thanks for what you do! There's so much ambient, time-lapse turning content out there, I'm delighted to find a straight forward how-to video with helpful explanation.
I’ve just watched the video, and then went down and played at making one. My grand daughter is going to love it (but the Mrs, or her Mum,) won’t be so happy🤣. Many thanks, expert tuition as always.👍👍
Great video thanks. We had unexpected snow here in the UK today so I spent an hour in the worksop and made one, Absolutely brilliant!. Thought it might be nice for the Grand Children but then realised what you meant about being annoying!! Thanks again.
I would like a smaller one to wear on a lanyard, for calling my dogs. They have run of my 20 acres, and my voice is just not loud enough, and metal whistles remind me of my days as a cop. 😉
@@tomislavtomasicwoodturning You made it easy. You're a good teacher. Now that I have this in my head I want to make an insanely large one that I can hook to an air compressor! Thanks for the video!
A very nice project which I intend to follow by making some Christmas gifts. I particularly like the detailed use of the skew which I've yet to try using. Thanks very much for the detailed explanation and the great video.
The only thing I can suggest is a hole or some other method at the end of the whistle for a lanyard for hunters and boaters...? Tomislav, maybe a good idea for a video would be using the lathe to make additional tools for the lathe, like sanding discs and sanding cylinders. Another great video!
You are a remarkable man! It’s good to see you use your new lathe. I’m turning miniature bird houses for Christmas right now. I will turn this whistle design a little later. My Grandfather was my inspiration for getting into woodworking. He built several pieces of furniture for his grandkids, two stepdaughters and my Grandmother. What was your inspiration??
Thank you very much, I should make bird house, never made one on the lathe. My inspiration is my family and my latest uncle, sounds rough but the drive to make a living doing what you love is great but also difficult and many jobs are not easy, but again with family in mind I overcome anything I can to show them it's possible and to enjoy your work and take pride in it.... I learn that from my late uncle .... you probably still have those pieces to see right?
@ Yes I do. I have a hutch and a coffee table that he built for my late Mother. My daughter has a corner knick-knack shelving display that he built for my late Mother. Have you ever turned the Russian stacked doll sets? You have inspired so many people. Your teaching style is first class. Have a wonderful Christmas!!!
Journeymen cabinetmaker here. I would REALLY caution about wearing gloves around any tool that spins at any speed of rpms. Your finger could get twisted off in the blink of an eye.
I have made hundreds of these and none of them ever work. Today, I followed your method exactly; even copying the design and it still doesn't work. Yours seem to work first time unless editing makes it look that way 🙂. Well done.....lovely project and skew work. Maybe one day I will make one that does actually whistle. Thanks
В моем детстве любой мальчишка запросто делал свистки из куска липовой ветки. Для изменения тона свистка с обратной стороны должен располагаться двигающийся поршень! Удачи! In my childhood, any boy could easily make whistles out of a piece of lime twig. To change the tone of the whistle, a moving piston must be located on the back side! Good luck!
I really enjoy your videos and I've learned a lot from them. I'm not afraid of the skew any longer! What did you use to de-clog your sanding drum? From Scotland.
Awsome to hear about skew, its great tool to use, for cleaning sandpaper I use this rubber like thing for cleaning sandpaper, you can find it in pretty much any woodworking shop
Thank you for your video! New subscriber and super like! So glad you named it fund my "your" hobby lol. while you inspire me I did cringe through video as a new wood turner, I have become afraid of the skew chisel. Do you have beginner advise to learn the skew without catches?
Hi Thank you for subscribing, I really appreciate that, I have several videos on skew , but don't be afraid of catches, 99%of the time if you are using solid wood without splits, you are safe. It messes up the wood. Its just practice and time
I've made several whistles but your technique with the skew makes my efforts poor by comparison. I turn mostly cherry and have many blanks of suitable size. I really like your smooth, simple shape. I think I'll try and make one of these this week.
Your skew is way thicker than mine. But I'll try to get it really sharp and see if I can make a whistle. Totally off topic, I have a piece of a tree that was knocked down in a storm. It is 9" in diameter and 14" long. How would you prepare it for turning? I was thinking of sawing it in half lengthwise, then again in half crosswise, giving 4 blanks 7" x 9" x 4-1/2".
Its actually pretty much standard thickness of 6mm or 1/4 inch I would probably cut that since it's small into spindle blanks but bigger ones for tea caddies let's say, or bowl blanks and the short rest into small spindle blanks
I don't measure the angle, I measure length of the bevel, I aim for 9-10mm long. th-cam.com/video/eSGu0kTdlds/w-d-xo.htmlsi=3ZE7l7qK1xAGlD_O More in this video, in the first 10min I go indepth on this

This will no longer be a friend after Christmas once that whistle starts running around the house! I love it.
Sounds great and it will be great surprise and gift, thank you for watching
A rocket whistle.
I wasn’t sure whether I wanted to make one of these but as soon as you said it can be “annoying” now I’m going to make them for my friends kids.😂
"annoying!!" - perhaps you should make them for your enemies' kids. Kind regards.
My grandson sure needs one of these!
Have two grandsons. Two of these should drive there mom and dad nuts

I've got a couple of young granddaughters who will like this! Their parents not so much so that means I HAVE to make a couple! Thanks for the video.
Get them a drum to go with the whistles - the parents will like you even more😀
@gregorymacneil2836 one of them already has a FULL drum set. Gift from the other granddad. And they DO hate it. Lol.

My thoughts exactly! 😂
Same thoughts grandson 4 granddaughter 2 my Sons going to love me (pay back time)😂
What a great little project. My grandson will love it Christmas morning. Thanks
Not sure if his parents will though 😂
I am going to drive my son NUTS! He has 3 kids from 3-9. Each of them get one of these for Christmas! Thanks for the demo.🤣
Uuuu parents will love me🤣🤣 I still have to give them to my kids, I think I'll wait Christmas but not sure which year 🤣
These are addictive... as seen on my IG page I have been spinning these for last few weeks and cant seem to stop... fun projects!
True, very fun and fast to make
I like your commentary. Nice and clear and, unlike very very many youtubers in this field, you don't repeat yourself. It's a nice change. Thank you.
Thank you
These would be a great way to annoy the other vendors at a craft fair! Thanks for another very good and instructive video!
Until somebody comes up with rattles and/or snares... :P Funny thought though
Going to make for my 7 grandchildren. Pruning my cherry and apple. I will keep the cuttings. Thank you!😊
Great, they will be happy 😀
First rate video-very instructive and a great way to use up small scraps of hardwood. I'm going to make whistles for my grandson and his buddy.
Thank you
Thank you for this great and timely video. I have a brand new skew that I haven't yet used. Today is the day!! I appreciate your channel
Today is the day and this kind of projects are great for skew
Nice little project. Thanks. Tomi, you make those peeling cuts look so easy and you sure do round up a blank quickly.
Its a pleasure use a skew😀

Now I have to make one.

Buen trabajo, también me pareció buena idea la del cilindro de lijado 👍

Hi, I love this video. You are a master of the dreaded skew. I wish I was. Tanks David , in the UK
Thank you David,I'm far from master, I have a lot to learn but I really like my job so I enjoy learning. Its all about time and practice

Awesome job. You the man 💯
Old guitar strings make good wire burners. You even get a (limited) choice of wire widths!
It's been a while since I subscribed to a new woodworking channel. I like your style. 👌
Thank you I really appreciate that
Wait, what? Lathes can be used for things other than bowls?
😂
Who would known that😅thanks for watching
I'm sure my grandson would love it, my son and his girlfriend, maybe not. Guess I'll be making one 🤪
Looking forward to hear reactions from parents 😀
You should include those with a lanyard and advertise them as safety whistles

Lovely whistle - thank you. If you drill a smaller hole does the pitch change?
Pitch depends on the chamber length to a large extent, longer is deeper tone
Best things is to try different hole size and depth, and see what works

I don't measure the angle, I measure length of the bevel, I aim for 9-10mm long.
