      Similar story, I bought a 1985 SHELBY DODGE CHARGER (same drive train)brand new when I was 21. I commuted 80 miles a day to automotive trade school for a year, I took every race that I could find and kept a ledger of win' s and loses noting model of car. I had one loss and it was to an 1985 Porsche 911.

    Currently own an 86 Laser XT 5spd with t-tops and leather interior. Purchased it in 1990, drove it 5yrs,and took it off the road to address some paint issues, and then life got busy. Ended up completely disassembling it in 2010, did a nut and bolt restore, engine and trans refresh, all new brake, fuel, and AC lines, exhaust, heater core, evaporator and condenser, wiring harness dissamble, clean and check. And of course a fresh coat of flash red. Finally back on the road in 2022 with some nice 17" rims and tires. Now is the perfect summer daily driver.

      Well the Grand AM Turbo GT, the Sunbird Turbo GT were more popular where I lived and I lived between a Chrysler and GM plant. Also the Thunderbird Turbo Coupe. All of these cars were planned in the late 70s. There was an 82 Mustang GT Turbo, the Capri RS Turbo and the Mustang SVO. These were all for fuel economy because of the oil crises in the 70s. In the end, the V8s won out because ther oil crisis was forgotten and you weren't going to go 0-60 fast while you were fighting uneven half shaft torque steer while the V8 and Turbo four rear wheel drive cars were side stepping the clutch and hooking.

    My first brand new car! A Black/Gray 1988 Dodge Daytona base model, 5 speed manual. Bought in October 1988. It came with a bad clutch from the factory and it took me almost a year to get the dealer to agree. They were on their last repair attempt before having to buy it back as a lemon. But they finally replaced the bad clutch and the car was GREAT after that! Drove the cool 88 Daytona until 1994 and 140k miles. In 2002, I needed an extra car so I bought a White/Blue 1989 Dodge Daytona base model, again with the 5 speed manual. This time it was used with 120k miles already. What a great car! Drove it for 4 years as my 2nd car. Donated it after 4 years and an additional 20k miles. These are fun cars to drive and own. Great video and info! If you enjoy the Dodge Daytona/Chrysler Laser? Check out the Chrysler Nationals in Carlisle, PA July 12th to 14th, 2024.

    I have had 2 - an '88 Daytona Shelby Z and I now own a '87 Shelby Z. Both in white. I got the 88 in 1997 or so when it was "just a used car" for just under $4,000 with about 80K miles. Really enjoyed it, but let it go to buy a vehicle to tow a boat. A couple of years ago I found the 87 Shelby Z I currently have. I think it was an exceptional buy. It looks nearly like new with only 67K miles and I was able to get it for less than $7,000. It is curious to me that these go for so much less money than the V8 Mustangs and Camaro/Firebirds from the era. I can attest that these cars, with the handling package, the 174 hp and the 5 speed are very entertaining to drive. When they hit 13 psi boost, it really sets you back in your seat and you have to watch out for torque steer of course! A lot of people have no idea what it is and it often gets overlooked at car shows. But it is fun to have something so unique!

    My first car was a 1989 Dodge Daytona ES in Blue (procured in 96). It was excruciatingly slow as I believe the former owner had beat up the automatic that was put in it and the engine was no prize, thats for sure. Despite that I got the car up to nearly 120 mph on the highway near where I live. It had the t-tops (which I loved) and despite how slow this thing ended up being it was ridiculously reliable and lasted a few years without incidence. Another guy in my neighborhood had a red one, but it was a 91 with a stick shift and I was pretty jealous because it looked like it hauled. I have great memories of that car and even saw one for sale recently. A mixed bag, but it was great being 16 with a sports car, lemme tell ya. Thanks for highlighting this car, this was fun and you showed models I had no idea ever existed.

I drove it to Hungary a few times and there were always fingerprints on the glass after I parked it. Nobody there had seen one before. I had a 1988 Daytona Shelby Z for 7 years. I loved it ! I bought it with 43,000 miles on it from the second owner. He had every oil change paperwork and all for it. The original owner I was told was a very large man and he had trouble getting in and out of it and sold it after just a couple months. It was blue and had the louvers on the back hatch , but I removed them because it made the hatch so heavy when you were putting anything inside it. It was quick and hugged corners like no tomorrow. The only reason I got rid of it was because I was coming home from work and the transmission blew with a hole in the casing the size of a silver dollar. It sat in my driveway about a month or so and I had to sell it as a parts car because my wife was out of work and I was the only income working in Security at Mandalay Bay Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas and couldn't afford to buy another transmission. I had to sit in it one more time before the tow truck came and picked it up. It was a sad sad day for me. The only thing that would have made it cooler was if it had T-Tops. I drove it cross country twice with no problems.

First deer took off the driver side mirror, epoxied it back on. Second deer only damage was 3 inches of vinyl pinstripe off the passenger quarter. I loved that car. The 1987 Turbo II with a charge cooler was the best of the 2.2L Turbo engines. It had a forged crankshaft, Mahle pistons, full floating pins and the head/block were cross drilled to improve cooling of the deck. It ran 12 psi boost and a power rpm of 6,800. It had a two piece intake manifold tuned for power. In 1988, the manifold was changed to a one piece from there on. The Turbo IV was a Variable Nozzle Turbocharger from Garrett. The control system for the VNT was very innovative. The 2.5L Turbo I was a long stroke version of the 2.2L. It used the one piece intake manifold and an Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI) turbocharger will a lower A/R ratio and low inertia turbine/compressor wheel. It too had Mahle pistons with full floating pins and cross drilling. Balance shafts were on the 2.5L to cancel out vibration. These rotated at twice engine speed. Fun projects for sure!

    Brings back a lot of memories... my uncle had a 85 laser turbo black with white stripes on the side.. the turbo was not working at the time but still he used to it for a while.... it was a cool car which had the looks of a sports car especially the front of it with the low wedge front... he didn't have the original wheels which were perfect for the car ... he had 16 inche rims on it ... the driver's door handle was broken and the radio was off and on... it never broke down mechanically and started in every cold Canadian weather ... it was a lot of little things that broke but engine and tyranny were fine although it did misfire and turbo was not working... later through the web I learned the turbo had to be cooled down with idling before shutting off... I always think of that car it was a cool looking car that was cheap... the Daytona z was way better looking with the side skirt piece which many put on back in the day.. without that side skirt piece in the mid 80s the car looked a bit off they should have added a side skirt piece from the factory along with the car should have been lower from the front since they all sagged from the back and the front was always so high..and should have had a v8 version of it and a better turbo for the 4 cylinders other than that I loved that car it was a part of my childhood growing up

    Street racing back then, nobody had these modified. There were more people with the Omni GLH/GLHS out there . My buddies Dodge 400 had the boost cranked and he had some fun. Going into the late 80s. Shelby CSX VNT. The rest of us drove Mustangs. The ten minute tune-up, 3.73 gears, punched catalytics a sticky tire and drove it like you stole it was enough to kill almost everything on the road.

      @@Todd.TThat's a great combo, but any 4th Gen with an LT1 or LS1 was spanking Mustangs until the Cobra R New Edge or the 03-04 Cobra. The rest stock for stock were easy prey year for year. Mustang was cheaper which was it's main advantage and I've owned 2 Mustang GTs of the new edge variety. Boat anchor engines.

    • @Todd.T
      @Todd.T 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@FWDSUXARSE I don’t like any of the Mustangs that replaced the 79-93 until a few years ago. You didn’t buy the car for what it did, you bought it for what you were going to do with it. If you know Mustangs then you’ll know how fast Revan Evan went in a stocker by beating the crap out of it. An 89 LX trunk was $11k while a Camaro cost another 7-10k on that. A ported Cobra intake with an E303 cam and porting the stock heads was cheap and you’d easily destroy a stock Mustang, a stock Cobra or any Camaro/Corvette that cost way more money of the same vintage. There was even enough money left over for a power adder. Back in the late 80s a twin turbo kit was 3-4K. This is why the car sold. Cheap, easy to modify, tons of parts available for strip or road course. Hot Rod or Car Craft did a dollar for dollar purchase and dollar for dollar modification to the suspension and engine. The Camaro lost on all fronts.” And that’s from a heavily GM biased magazine. It’s what I get for the dollar and what I can make it do for the dollar.

    My 85 Daytona Turbo Z was the most expensive car I have ever owned, $7,500 with 14,000 miles on it. I loved it, looked racy and got great mpg, it replaced my 73 Vega I built with a 283 V8.
    It had pretty significant turbo lag, you really felt the kick when the turbo kicked in. I owned it for many years, I used it tow a trailer and when I towed a big pile of bricks I toasted the 5 speed, and rebuilt it, the first fwd car I ever worked on. Eventually it was destroyed when it caught on fire. Those early fuel injection system with high pressure gas lines just were not up to the task, and with the fuel line above the exhaust manifold, any leak and poof you got a raging fire.
    I used to buy and sell a lot of cars, and always wanted to find another one, but never found this exact model for sale, the 85 Turbo Z in red. Not a fan of the later models.
    I just bought a 2002 PT Cruiser so this is now my "retro" dodge.
