- My name is Austin, this is Mopar Garage, and we build cool stuff in here! Today we finally have they Shelby Daytona Project ready to take it's first road test! It's a lot of fun to drive, but we do discover several bugs we are going to have to work through before it can go on it's first real road trip!

My Vehicles:
1999 Dodge Ram 1500 4x4 short bed standard cab 5 speed 5.2 (318) V8
1986 Dodge Daytona Turbo Z Carroll Shelby Edition
1973 Plymouth Satellite Plus
2019 Kia Optima LX FE
I had one just like yours in the early 2000s. I bought out of a feild for $100, rebuilt engine turbo everything, 9:1 compression, and ussually ran 18-20psi boost with adjustable boost vale and extra fuel injector, remapped ecu. Never dynoed it but, there wasn't a stock corvette, or built 4 banger in Tampa that could outrun it. Hold to yours I wish I could buy it. Mine had the authenticity plate signed by Carrol Shelby and #561 off his line. Great cars. God bless and be safe brother.
Sounds like an awesome build! I bet that thing ripped. Thanks for watching!
Sweet man! Glad to see her on the road and moving. Having driven one of those (an 87 though) I remember those sounds vividly!
Thanks brother!! This thing sounds sweet! I didn’t expect that much turbo noise.
Awesome man. I'm years behind you with my 85 turbo z but making slow steady progress.
Thanks brother!! Keep at it! Too many projects go unfinished.
Excellent job! Now it needs some paint, but it look great
Thanks!!
Awesome to see the Daytona back in action! Seems there is always a bug or two to work out no matter how hard you try to cover every thing. I’m just starting my project ‘88 Shelby Z and it’s going to be a long journey back to the 80’s! Keep making content on this car, I like to see videos of theses cool little cars. Good luck with the bugs and keep up the good work!!!
Thanks man!! This project has been a bear. You’re right, there’s always bugs at the end of a big project. Good luck on yours, stick with it! Too many project cars go unfinished.
Great seeing your car running!
Thanks man!! Lots to do still but it’s rewarding that it’s at least running and driving
I use to have an '87 Shelby-Z. Heavily modified. Bored .40 over, ported/polished top end, Super 60 mod, stage 2 ECM, 20+ PSI, and so much more. Basically did everything up to needing the 5th injector before the tb for wot. Insanely fast. Loved that car. Divorce is a wonderful thing. LOL
Dang! I bet that thing was sweet!
@@TheMoparGarage if I could post pics you'd see how sweet it was. Put a lot into that car. About a month after finishing it I was listing it for sale. Wife and I separated, both got apartments, no garage anymore to properly store it. We both sacrificed some things we really didn't want to. Mine was my Shelby, hers was my paycheck. LOL
Thats awesome my friend. I had a 88 Daytona Shelby z intercooled. I think stock 187 or 88 hp. I got it with 28k and it had full leather almost mint condition. I should of kept it. I just did the valve thing to get a few more pounds of boost. If you went to far it would buck and cut off the fuel.
I am a Chrysler dodge tech for over 40 years and the trans takes ATF + 4 . Another thing i recommend is to drill a 1/8 inch hole on the thermostat and have the hole at 12 o clock cause what happens sometimes is on a cold start the temp will rise to much and if it keeps doing it you will end up with a blown head gasket . Here is a mod if you can find one is that the turbo 2 Daytona had a radiator with an intercooler built in . That should bolt right up .
I had heard that about the thermostat. Thanks!
I was a mechanic for a Chevy dealer when I purchased my Daytona Turbo Z in 86, after 60k the turbo and head gasket went, soon after the trans went. I loved the car but had to unload it.
They’re definitely not the most reliable things ever built! This one only has 91,000 and I’ve had to rebuild the engine and turbo. They’re cool though!
@@TheMoparGarage yes they are sinister looking👍
Same ...86 Laser XE bought in 88 . Loved the car until it blew a head gasket in 94... It was never the same after that. Rolled it over after hitting a snow bank year later totaling it.
It was my sisters first car when she graduated college and started working. New 8,000 miles it over charged her battery and blew it up, warping the hood and ruining the paint on the hood fender and front piece. Was a cool car, but it was one problem after another.
@@charlesprice7608 dang! 80’s Chrysler electronics were never the most reliable thing in the world 😂

There is a guy in my town thats has a 87 or 88 daytona shelby not sure if its for sale or not.i hope it is
Nice! Snag it up if it’s for sale, they’re only getting harder to find!
A friend and I are trying to get one of these back on the road and making a bit more power. And sources for a crank? The one we got is all messed up and we believe it might be too messed up to resurface.
@@stefanlynch3210 I would reach out to Steven at turbododgeparts.com….if he doesn’t have one, he probably can tell you who does. He’s helped me out big time with this project.
V8 swap it.
Congratulations! I know you (and your wife) have been waiting for this day quite a while. I know that first drive feeling!! Looking forward to more adventures...
Thank you, Steven! I may have to pick your brain about some of these vacuum lines, I think I need to get creative and start from scratch on the whole system!
Love watching the Daytona come along, I just sold my project laser, Shelby, and base Daytona. My 86 had a rebuilt head and had some cracks by the thermostat area/plug area from the previous owner who loved blue rtv and over tightening everything. My little eco diesel Jetta and turbo diesel swapped rabbit truck will have to fill the void for now.
Hope to see more progress!
Thanks for following along!! The heads on these things seem to be so delicate, a definite weak point. The turbo diesel swapped rabbit sounds pretty sick!!
Loved my 86 turbo z. Wish I still had it!
They’re definitely fun little cars!
I love those cars !!! Its comming along !
Me too! This project has been one of my more frustrating ones, getting it on the road finally is huge!
I almost bought the exact same 86.... Later on I did buy an 88 Daytona Shelby Z. 🥰 Loved that car. I still regret selling it.😢
High engine bay heat does deteriorate and crack vacuum lines. But the 2.2 litre turbo is a fairly easy engine to work on. No I'm no licensed mechanic but was able to do many maintenance and repair things on my car. It's a easy car to learn about too so that if you have to take it to a good mechanic you atleast can have a good understanding of what work may need to be done on the Daytona.
I have always loved the styling of the Daytona era cars here. Again I miss my 88 Shelby Z and will look back at photos I have of it at times for nostalgia 😎
Well done! That car will be amazing when it's done. I was checking, as far as I can see, there isn't even one Laser/Daytona here in Sweden. There's a few Le Barons, may be 40 or so 1989 Turbo l1 cars if I remember right. Nice work!!
Thanks man!! They’re a cool conversation piece for sure, I’m looking forward to finally getting this one out to an event. There are very few left even here in the states, most of them rusted out and went to the crusher.
Hi good to see an 86 still on the road. I had a 86 blue C/S myself bought new and lost it when I got rear ended, It was the most reliable car I ever owned, I cross crossed the continent quite a few times with it, Got great gas mileage and had a blast driving it as well as owning it. I miss it very much still. I do have an 87 Shelby Z and a 86 New Yorker turbo currently LOVE THE 80's Turbo chryslers. The one thing I'll let you know about. The on board diagnostics with the key in the ignition the cars computer will tell you whats wrong with it, Cycle the ignition switch on/off 3 times ( without starting engine )then leave it in the on position, The power loss lamp will flash codes to tell you whats wrong. Also the turbo boost isn't limited to 7.5 psi occasionally under the right conditions ( air temp/ barometric pressures / fuel octane / altitude ) the boost levels can reach higher then 7.5 psi it can go as high as 12 psi safely before the computer will react and retard the timing and fuel via electronic wastegate actuator/controller located on the passenger shock tower to prevent over boost/engine damage. Your car is actually called the Carroll Shelby edition of the turbo Z line up. If your car had the power drivers seat with the power seat wings on the bottom and on the seat back it was called Shelby Z there was only 500 1986 Dodge Daytona Turbo Z's fitted with this option. Thought you'd like some extra info.
Thanks man! I’ve always thought 80’s turbo Chryslers were very cool cars as well. Mine does have the 10 way adjustable power seat with the power wings, I didn’t know how much more rare that made it. That’s good stuff!
Nice work man, i got myself an 84 daytona turbo, but it has an 86 turbo z engine. working on fixing her up i also just recently got her on the road but i have to redo my timing. i noticed you still have your old brake lines, i reran the fuel lines and brake lines on mine, it was awful.
@@FenDaytona great to hear you got it back on the road again! I’m very thankful that the brake and fuel lines are still in pretty good shape on this car. There’s NOTHING worse than re-running brake lines.
My dad bought this car new in 86, same colors and all other than he had rear window luvers, from Panorama Dodge in Penfield NY. was a toss up between a 5.0 mustang, this or a monte carlo, I think he made the right choise. I drove it on my prom night, he told me, i'll know if you speed.
Haha that’s great! I think he made the right choice too. I really wish I’d had the opportunity to have one of these new.
I replaced the temp sensor on my 84' last year but it was a NOS part so I didn't have any issues. I'm sure you'll work all the bugs out. Nice to see another Turbo Z on the road. 😁👍
Thanks!! Appreciate you watching. Looks like I’m gonna have to try to find a NOS sensor as well!
for the transmission funnel, try to locate one with a flex hose attached. For my Daytona, now long gone, I used a vinyl-plastic one that allowed for the hose to bend while keeping the funnel level.
I need to get one like that. I’ve got about 10 funnels but nothing flexible!
I owned a maroon Daytona Turbo Z back in the early 1990's. The paint was peeling (the clear coat) but that was an awesome car. It was my daily for about 3 years. I also had a 86 Plymouth Turismo (same as the small Charger) which was a great car. That said I am definitely more of a E and B body guy along with a V8 but I have fond memories.
The turbo Chryslers were definitely a cool era in automotive history! I had a B body as well (‘73 Plymouth Satellite) that I just sold a couple weeks ago.
@@TheMoparGarage Iv'e had a lot of Mopars over the years and currently have a pile (70 challenger RT 440 EFI 6 pack, 73 Cuda 416 EFI 6 pack, 01 Viper GTS ACR, 70 Roadrunner project, 68 FB Barracuda project, 71 Charger Superbee clone 5.7 5spd TKX I am building now, not to mention a Ram 1500 and a Ram 2500). I saw your 73 in the video, looked solid, I once had a 74 Roadrunner that was originally a 318 3spd car that I changed to a 340 4spd car, i loved it but I loved E bodies more and traded it in on a 74 Challenger.
@@MH-rb7lp that’s way cool! What an awesome collection. I couldn’t be more jealous of the 70 Challenger and ACR Viper. Those are 2 of my all time dream cars.
@@TheMoparGarage Thanks. I am an E body fan from WAY back and have owned about 9 of them. The Challenger I have now is a U code car, originally EK2, AT, PS, PB, black vinyl top, track pack (3.55) car. It was pretty rough when I got it which was after about 20 years of not working on cars (I was in the military) so it is not done exceptionally well but I do love it.
@@MH-rb7lp that’s awesome. You should be proud of your collection my friend! I subscribed to you so I can keep up with it!
Nice to see another one roadworthy. Have an 86 Chrysler Laser XT same as yours but red. Restored and second summer daily driver. Also resisted urge to modify, that is what the 340s are for
Thanks man! Love to hear about another one restored.
You know sometimes there is nothing wrong with stock!! 👍
@@kharnthebetrayer1575 agreed, I’ve always been a “stock” kind of guy when it comes to uncommon vehicles.
I had the first ‘84 in my area, also black, loved it
Awesome! I wish I could have had one of these when they were new.
Cool car i had a 1986 Shelby Charger it was a great car 2.2 turbo with a 5 speed and had tons of fun with it and wish I would of kept it but I would like to get another one
When I was a kid my mom had a 2.2 turbo2 package Shelby.
For its time it was a C4 slayer all day every day.
Nice! These cars were faster than pretty much all the domestic V8 stuff, people forget.
Im really surprised you were outrunning C4's, did that include C4 zr1's?. I remember these cars and at the time I had a 1987 iroc 305TPI/speed. Stock I never had problems with outrunning these cars and they seemed to have nothing left after 120mph.
Waste gate vacuum line cracked or off? I had a cracked one on my '85 C/S Charger and it would over boost until the engine would cut off.
It ended up being a wastegate vacuum solenoid issue. In the next video I hooked it up direct to the intake manifold and it’s all good.
C/S for the 1986 model year and only in the 1986 model year stood for Carroll Shelby Model years 1988/89/90/91 The C/S stood for Competition Series, The color badging of the C/S for 1986 was a orangery red or gold color, The darker red tone is found on the 88 thru 91 models, Gold was not available in those model years. The rarest model for 1986 C/S is Black/Gold with the light tan leather interior with the Shelby enthusiast seat a total of 12 were produced, 3 manual and 3 automatics marketed under the Dodge nameplate and sold in the USA. 3 manual and 3 automatics were marketed under the Chrysler nameplate and sold in Canada. The 12 were all T-topped optioned and had gold pin striping around the door window frame. With that said the rarest Daytona model sold were 36 1990 C/S VNT's ( variable nozzle turbo ). Of those 36 they were spread out between USA and Canada,Marketed as Dodge for USA Or Chrysler for Canada. And yes I do know which cities they were sold in.
If you look under the carpet underlay on the passenger side front you may still have the production broadcast build sheet when the car was made providing that your floor wasn't repaired or coolant leak from the heater core or flood damaged. All the information on your car is on that sheet.
My girl had the 89 Carol Shelby Daytona in black, I had the 86 Daytona Turbo Z in gun metal blue. We loved them but were money pits.
I had an 86 back in early 90's. smoked just like that. I believe it was the O2 sensor but don't hold me to that.
This was just from the car sitting for so long while I was building the motor. Oil and raw fuel got into the open exhaust. It cleared up after the first few minutes of it running.
It's a good idea to pop out the core plugs that is where a bunch of stuff will gather and pop them and flush it out real good another thing is CLR is good to use to flush the cooling system out and if it's full of rust it's because someone ran straight water and that is no good for it because coolant is a lube and rust protector. many people think coolant is only good so it don't freeze but it does many other things then to protect from freezing.
I owned an identical black 86 turbo z t-top. Only difference is the rims were silver not gold color. Traded it in for a car with an auto trans so my wife could drive it. I purchased a manual trans car within a year afterwards. Still regret trading in my Daytona. On a positive note, the manual car I bought was a 94 Integra GSR which I still own to this day.
A lot of people comment on my videos about how they regret selling their various turbo Dodges….A ‘94 Integra is nothing to sneeze at though, they’re getting pretty darn rare as well!
My dad ordered a new 84' Daytona turbo w/stick. I got to drive it a couple of times but wasn't impressed with the acceleration rate. My fast car at the time was a 66' Chevy II 400 hp 350 Turbo350 3.08 10 bolt posi. My dad was afraid to race me, but I can understand why.😂
Haha these 80’s turbo Dodges are definitely not “fast” comparatively to actual performance cars. They’re a cool piece of history though!
I had an 87 dodge daytona had trouble with the waist gate on opening at first but finally got it straighten out, that car would rip for a 4 banger, tour up some v8s all the time wish I would have kept it,I saw 1 parked a while ago behind a house probably one of project cars that will sit and rot away.😢
You hate to see the old ones sitting! They’re very cool cars for sure.
You should always check your oil when running the engine it seems you may have a head gasket issue and you should make sure water is not in the oil because there seems to be lot's of steam coming from your exhaust i may be getting into the exhaust system too and not the oil
My brother had an ‘84 turbo Z. Early 90s. Second owner. My uncle was the first owner.
Motor needed rebuilt, tranny needed rebuilt, turbo messed up.
We ended up ditching it
This one has been quite the project. Engine, turbo, subframe, too much to list. There were definitely times I thought about giving up.
One thing to watch on these engines is the turbo link rod breaking. Dodge wanted to replace my entire turbo - I said nonsense - just weld the rod. They did and it ran fine.
I had Steven at turbododgeparts.com rebuild mine for me. If the rod on mine ever did break, I would definitely be welding it! Haha
looks snappy, super good looking too
Thanks man! I was definitely surprised with how quick it was.
I had one of those. I got it from my dad. One too many times on the back of a flat bed tow truck. Had to get rid of it. Sad day. But that's what I get for not being a mechanic.
They were certainly not the most reliable vehicles of all time!
@TheMoparGarage cooling issues lots of rust. And my dad tweeked the frame hitting a dear. It was still kinda fun. Lot of respect from old schoolers.
I bought a white '86 new and loved it. Some truck hit me and totaled it 😞
Damn, hate to hear that!!
And CVT transmission fluid and ATF transmission fluid work pretty good if you mix them together depending on how thick it is, but I had a 1989 Daytona, Pacifica and the coolest thing about the one I had is I had. I’m pretty sure it was the iroc or the Z body kit that I took off a stock one had to flip up headlights. It was lime green, and it was the coolest little car ever we put a little bigger turbo on it, and it got almost 300 hp to the wheels. That thing was like a dang go kart to be honest I love them cars. It was my first car when I got my drivers license.
If you unplug the sensor and the gauge still doesn't drop then you have a short on the wire or you have a bad gauge . If the gauge drops then you have a bad sensor .
I actually still had the original sender, in the next video I put it in and the gauge issue was fixed. Thanks!
A friend of mine had one of these back in the 80's, it was a really cool car, he had a bitchin Alpine stereo in it with an AMP, April Wine Harder Faster sounded frigging amazing in that car!
Awesome! They were definitely ahead of their time and a way cool 80’s time capsule. Thanks for watching!
why didnt you just swap the water pump? especially on one easy to access
I already swapped it when I rebuilt the engine. It didn’t turn out to be leaking, it was just dripping down to the pump housing from the bleed plug at the top of the head.
I had an 86 and an 89 and they both would peg that boost gage. So not sure why you feel its over boosting? Im pretty sure its stock with a 30 second over boost.
Stock is 7 lbs of boost. A stock engine can’t take more than 12 or so. Some cars are built to take 20 plus, maybe yours is built up?
No both were bone stock I had an 86 and it would peg 14 on the boost gage but if you were climbing a grade with it pegged in 30 seconds the boost would drop down to 7 on the boost gauge
14 and 15 on my 86 and 89 are not red it's orange on the gauge.
@@damontroch4765 interesting. Mine would stay pegged all the time, I wasn’t comfortable with it just because the head gaskets are so fragile on these things.
You are reading to much into that Gauge. Find a stock owners manual for that car. It will tell you right in it.
7 on that gauge is like normal driving lol
Head gasket good chance .I had one in the early 90s. I learned how to do mechanic work on it myself 5 motors in 3 or 4 years but when u buy motor for less than 100 bucks can't expect much lol.I still loved it when it worked t bars out I thought I was driving a Ferrari chasing the females. Wish I knew what Shelby anything was going to be worth I had a Shelby pickup as well hind sight is 20 20 lol.
Hind sight is always 20/20!! This is a complete fresh engine build. There was a lot of vacuum issues that got figured out in the next video, it runs great now.

This engine has been fully rebuilt with a turbododgeparts.com head, there’s nothing wrong internally.
I feel so good right now. Went and looked at a left over 86 Dodge Daytona turbo, went to see a 1987 Ford Mustang convertible (I hate convertibles) that the Ford dealer wanted OVER list price for, and ended up with a low mileage 1985 Corvette that ran with optional 3.07 gears 13.90 stock, lol.
The Vette is definitely the fastest of that bunch! 80’s cars were all pretty slow in comparison to modern stuff.
I had a 85 laser turbo. It was fun and wish I had it bach
They’re fun cars! You probably see even fewer Lasers than you do Daytonas!
Do you find parts easily for this car?
It was very hard to find a lot of them…engine and some suspension parts are pretty common, but there’s a lot that was hard to find. Steven Seale at turbododgeparts.com helped me out a ton.
@@TheMoparGarage thanks
run the vac hose from the wastegate to the intake directly it will lock it at 6psi...
Thanks man, that’s actually really good to know. I’m going to do some research, I want to re-do the whole vacuum system from scratch and I’m not totally sure what’s needed and what isn’t.
@@TheMoparGarage If you have vacuum going to the map sensor fuel pressure regulator and you run the waistgate can directly to the intake you should be fine to drive it
@@thefinalroman good deal! Thanks for the info man
next time you put a new head gasket on instead of bolts go with head studs and nuts it does a better job clamping the head. these cars usually have head gasket issues because of the bolts don't clamp as good as the head studs instead.
I would have gone with a Redline brand gear box oil for the transmission regardless of the marginal price difference. Cheap insurance as gear box oil has long replacement intervals.
Redline is great stuff!

Would you or any of your subscribers be able to help me and my brother out on 2 Dodge Daytonas? One is an 88 Shelby Z in red with only 80 miles on it... my best guess is it needs a turbo and a fuel pump... it was running with heaps of black smoke out the exhaust and no Turbo PSI and the steering felt super loose and then it had fuel delivery issues and stopped running about 3 years ago. The other is a super rare 92 Iroc RT in white. It hasn't ran in 20 years... my brother took the hole engine apart and rebuilt it but didn't mark the timing... so it won't fire. It gets spark in only 2 cylinders 1 and 3 I believe but it's his dream car and would make his life complete if we got it running... He is actually a mechanic as his profession and can't figure it out... but he hasn't had much time to work on it after he gets off work... we are in SLC utah if anybody is close to here... we could make an awesome video of it!!! We have a TH-cam channel as well Money Movers Bowling. So we would love to collab. We could teach you bowling???? Lol. Much love for your 86 here. Great video and great work!!! I was a rookie technician at a Chrysler Dodge dealership between’84 and ‘86. I was the squeak, leak and rattle guy. Needless to say, I was busy…. 😂😉
Haha I bet you were!!
Ditch that shitty log intake for at least a common block 1 piece intake. Put a zener diode on the MAP so it limits the voltage the ECU sees so when you go into over boost your ignition won't cut out. Get a rising rate adjustable fuel pressure regulator, a boost controller coming off of your waste gate, 40lb injectors, a walbro 225lph fuel pump and a front mount intercooler. A wideband AFR guage along with an aftermarket boost guage. A 2.5" to 3" exhaust, you'll see a monster difference, soon you'll smoke the stock clutch. 😋
Haha just keeping this one stock. They’re delicate enough as-is! I figured out the over boosting issue in a later video, it’s just going to be a cars and coffee cruiser. There are some sweet builds out there that people make out of these things though!
I have an '87 Shelby Z... Just you wait, the mods are coming it's inevitable... You can't fight the need for MO POWAH! 😂

I bought a new 1985 Chrysler Laser version of this car. Good grief that car was a giant piece of crap. It was in the shop more than it was on the road. It was the coolest car on the road though. The electronic dash and talking car. It was so cool. Tons of turbo lag until it kicked you in the pants. You don't really see any of these on the road these days tells you how bad they were. I kind of miss the old girl though.

My wife and I had the same car. Black with gold rims and T-tops. She didn't like when l would drive it and ladies would wave at me with her beside me. To each their own man!
Fix all the vaccuum lines and it will idle at 850 and boost to 9 psi
A couple videos after this one, I re-did the whole vacuum system. The isle issue actually ended up being a bad IAC/TPS set.
If that’s the 2.5 L, there’s a cool safety feature in that motor if it was to jump time even with the pistons all the way up in the vowels all the way open the Pistons will never touch the vowels because that is an awesome feature because then things do jump time if you do not pay attention to the timing, but the safety feature is crazy because it’s thousands of an inch between the valves and pistons into all of the people that are going to say no no yes it is a fact if you look it up, it is a fact it’s impossible to bend on a 2.5 L Daytona motor and that’s a fact
In that vacuum leak is probably them stupid rubber elbows then things are so trash. That is one of the stupidest things they put on them cars instead of using just regular fasteners they use rubber elbows, which are garbage and sometimes when you’re building boost, they’ll blow off and cause it’s run like crap and that could be why It’s idling high and they say they only have 140 hp which I don’t believe. I believe it has 210 at least because I’m cars will throw you into the seat definitely fast and I seen somebody smoke damn GMC typhoons and that car will smoke a grand international because four cylinders are extremely impressive
Idle is way to high
For sure! It’s fixed in later videos.
