Every time your framerate drops below 60, even if it's just to 57, it means that a frame took too long to render which causes the previous frame to stay on twice as long, causing the game to stutter as frames come in at irregular intervals. Stable 60 over unstable 60 is a huge difference in fluidity of the picture. It's all about eliminating dropped frames.
Urh.. so I've had a PS4 Pro for a year and never knew about boost mode. Now I can squeeze a lot more out of my new system before getting a PS5 in 3-4 years time.
@@JudeTheTH-camPoopersubscribe I've got 60 games that run just fine on my PS4. No rush for a PS5 until there's numerous exclusives worth playing and a better version of the console available.
@@JudeTheTH-camPoopersubscribe what u mean hitman 3 just came out and runs a stable 30 aswell as AC Valhalla, cyberpunk isn’t that bad only drops when driving or in outdoor combat but even then it quickly fixes itself and soon will be patched and optimized in the coming updates anyways and I’m just talking about the Pro version not base as I don’t have the base console
Could you guys please investigate boost mode for: • Dark Souls II: Scholar of the First Sin • Until Dawn • Batman: The Telltale Series • Batman: Arkham Knight • Resident Evil: Revelations 2 • The Evil Within • Alien: Isolation • Murdered: Soul Suspect • The Dead Rising remasters • Rainbow Six: Siege and the two obvious requests: • Bloodborne & • The Witcher III Thank you DF for your great content!
Heisenberg yea I saw a vid of it recently using the boost mode and man I barely saw any slowdown during explosions and fights. wuld luv to c the fps counter on it for comparison.
Heisenberg Geez! Slow down cowboy! Your gonna need to summon a whole development crew to test out all of your request! Maybe you should think about paying them for something! Your asking for way too much all at one time cowboy and nothing is free in this world so hold on to some of your test so you can do it yourself! I mean, I am assuming you have a PS4 PRO, right cowboy?
As an old game programmer on Atari 8bit, i have to say: that the flaws of some games and low fps (PS4,PS3, Xbox, Nintendo/etc) are mostly because the creators aren't Ace programmers. Simply. On 8bit Atari a lot of things are made that use the full potential of this old 40 years old machine. If programmers do the same (= not being lazy) , more things would happen on PS4 (or even Ps2/Ps3). reason for this is : lack of time. Most games have deadline.. So, they use programming subsets to ease the work. The subsets are not optimized. So, in the end. games do work. indeed. but not optimised.
I agree, there are a couple of nice well optimized games out there though. Like Uncharted 4, ofc they did not hit max but probably 80-85%. I'm guessing they will at least 90-95 on Last of us part 2. But again I agree, just look at (never owned an Atari though :-) never C64 demos. Locked hardware makes software programmers usually (if they get time) do wonders and unimaginable stuff previous year. But then again hitting the hardware too much would make it harder to do a "remake" in the future and that probably is money lost.
even exclusive games with the so-called top of optimization for a just 299$ machine are considered as only 80-85%. Imagine how much lower that percentage will be on games like PUBG, AC series as well as other Ubisuck games :))
@@LT-tg4vf Ubisoft (or as you mentioned Ubisuck :-) is great example. If their framework compiles with no serious they will sell it the next day. Most of their games on PS4 is very low FPS, but it's not looking that bad. But it takes some optimization to go between 15-20 FPS to stable 30. And that would probably never happen with Ubisoft. Even the BF (Frostbite engine) series with BF4/PS4 there are a couple of things that is weird. When you got a fixed hardware you don't need have a "dynamic" texture mapping and so on. There is nothing dynamic at all with the standard PS4, you could pretty much fix everything. And that is what makes fixed hardware/consoles so great. You can hit the hardware, everyone have the same hardware. If it works for you it will work for everyone else.
@@alexanderwingeskog758 EXACTLY everyone blames the ps4 for being underpowered, but it is a dozen times more powerful than the ps3. Problem is games are rushed and released on a yearly basis now, so they are coded inproperly.
The truth is, a game's biggest limitation isn't the system power, it's the developers' patience. You could have all the power in the world, but if you can't program the rendering features, that extra power won't help much. Sure, you can improve performance, but not much beyond that.
As a PC enthusiast/assembler I gotta give credit to the PS4 Pro for making something 4k/60 FPS capable at $400 (For all those PC wannabe fanboys, you need at least $500 to make a entry level PC)
Beafowl PC gaming has a higher initial cost, but upgrades are a lot cheaper. Upgrading from ps4 to ps4 pro for $400 is expensive for just a GPU upgrade. The ps4 pro equivalent GPU is around an rx 470 and rx 480 which can be found for under $200.
I'm a PS4 player but I would also love to have a better PC than I have right now. And honestly, PC is a much better platform to invest in. It's expensive when you're building it but then that's it. PC games are way cheaper, online multiplayer is free, ridiculous amount of games available exclusively on it. I'm happy with my PS4 only because Sony rarely fails at giving us amazing exclusives.
Oh please! you can't even run native 4k On your tiny ass computer screen. Native 4k has to be 60inch or bigger to take full advantage of 4k image. so shut up, your ass can't even afford it.
I wish the console and pc argument would just be put to an end but it won't. I think anyone with common sense would know that pc will always be the most powerful of the 2 big console producers... but let me finish. a pc isn't near as affordable and convenient. I spend 3800 on a fresh build this year just to play at a higher resolution (not upscale, actual native resolution) but that doesn't mean I think my computer is superior because I don't think about it that way. it's my hobby to build so I will, did I spend more than needed to make a system playable, yes, could I just have gotten an Xbox and ps4 and have been ok, yes. it's all about what you want to play because it's your hobby. the argument between ps4 and Xbox is relevant because they're competitors but don't bring pc into it because it has nothing to do with any of those 2. do what you'd like, build what you'd like and get off others backs about it. people will like what they want and if that bothers you so much you need to get out and get a life so you're not so obsessed with this argument between pc, and consoles, because it makes absolutely no sense
Actually pc is more affordable. It's a higher investment upfront, but you save immensely over time with games as well as no online subscription service. But aside from that I agree. People want what they want, and I'm not gonna fault them for that. They don't care about frames and resolutions (well, mostly) they just want the game, and I respect that. Hell, I'd be lying if I said I wasn't attracted a few times to the idea of owning a simple little console where I can have all my exclusives and 3rd parties in one place, but this thought is usually remedied by playing a game on my rig at 144fps, but I digress.
mnb323 damn how much did you mom spend on your pc? Must suck not getting all of the console exclusives. i wonder at how many frames per second youre gonna be playing Red dead redemption 2 at launch...oh wait! This man just said he spent $3800 to upgrade his Gaming rig yet you say its more affordable in the long run? You mean how youre going to spend another couple thousands in a couple of years to update your rig.. i bought a ps4 years ago for $300 and just got my Pro for Another $300 thats less than $650 in 4 years for my main gaming machines. How the fuck is pc gaming more affordable? Stop lying to yourself and go tell your mommy to buy you another graphics card to keep up
+Black Death, Lol ignorance rules. do you even know something about the difference in resolution, hz, cpu and gpu architecture? Before the crypto mining craze u could make a pc build for 300/400 that is superior to an PS4 Pro, especialy in framerate. Used you can still do that. U don't need 3800 dollar to make a good pc rig. Don't pretend to know what you're talking about if you don't, your immature emotional behaviour won't cover that. Despite it's shit jaguar cpu the console is still good value, but there are a whole lot of advantages to pc gaming, especialy if you have or know someone with pc knownledge. It's a fact that with PC you can keep these games forever and console games are tied to their generation. Fyi there are more PC exclusives than PS4 exclusives. Enjoy trying to play Star Citizen when it's released for example. Check Steam to see what you're missing. Someone who truly loves gaming and is not some loyal fanboy will say both pc and console is good to have.
Black Death exactly $0.00 I worked for my pc asshat. And I do get console exclusives, because I have consoles. Why is it still a thing to think that in order to own a decent pc you have to completely break the bank? My pc is worth a little over a $1000 because I chose to make it that way, you could EASILY get away with building a pc for 4 - 500 that'll not only destroy consoles in terms of capabilities, but STILL reap the benefits of pc gaming, all while owning a cheap pc. You never even have to upgrade if you don't want to. people always look at the up front cost for everything and don't take into account the expenses paid overtime. $60 a year for online, games go on sale less frequently, (and when they do they're never usually more than half off), overpriced accessories, the list goes on. Pc gaming can be much more expensive, but it's an option. You can make it as cheap as you want to as well, but with consoles, you're stuck with whatever that company gives you.
Dennis Johnsen A $300/$400 PC won't play games anywhere as smoothly or anywhere near the graphical fidelity as the consoles do. They're optimized for that. On PC, You'd need at least a $700-$800 PC to run current gen games, and even then will struggle to get games to run anywhere near high settings. I have a $1500 rig, and even though I love it, I'm well aware that in 2-3 years I'm gonna have to pay a current gen console's worth of money to upgrade it, in order keep up with current gen games. Consoles are cheaper, but above all, are way easier to use. You're gonna deal with a lot more troubleshooting on PC, especially when using mods on games.
hey chaika you didn't hear the news cdproject red said the pro is so powerful its gonna now run witcher 3 at 4k 60 ultra and even use the cool nvidia hairworks
VelvetSky1102 pc fuckin sucks lmao i will never buy a pc yes I know it's better hardware wise but no I will never buy nor build one I love consoles I'll always play on consoles
Al. Lopez, He wasn't talking about the Infamous game. He meant Just Cause 3 is notorious for frame rate issues. Infamous is just another word for notorious.
Sony? Because changing a few bios settings isn't a great job. The devs? Because aiming for 60 fps in a 2-D game and actually getting 40-60 isn't a "great job" either.
@@youtuberobbedmeofmyname To be honest, you're right. It's a developer's job to optimize a game. And second, boost mode is a feature that should have been available from the get-go. If anything, it would make the PS4 Pro more attractive. But still, while Boost mode isn't perfect, it's good that we at least have the option to use it to improve the performance of otherwise laggy games. Better performance is always nice. EVERY game benefits from it. The best ones, the worst ones, and the ones in the middle.
@@youtuberobbedmeofmyname the console itself was released around 2013-2015. You can’t expect it to run new games with such graphics. The PS5 is now out and can run new games. So stop complain and it’s not the devs problem. They did a great job when the console realeased.
SoNGY 8 for $150-$200, more you could have built a faster PC, plus it can do way more than just play games. A $600 PC will always be better than a $400 console and a $200 generic computer anyday.
DigitalFoundry does great work as usual and of course, the comment section is nothing but kids and teens arguing about consoles and PCs. Pssst, guys, I'm going to give you some life advice that I really think will change everything: IT DOESN'T FUCKING MATTER.
Hell Yes! Boost Mode ups those frames! Playstation Pro's Boost Mode games www.reddit.com/r/PS4/comments/5rvknp/list_of_games_with_noticeable_improvements_in/?st=IYXCVSTC&sh=94b8a64f Remember this is still 4.50 BETA, still not complete! Playstation Pro is great and developers everywhere are doing cool stuff with it
It's great to see all these improvements to games that would occasionally (or often) struggle to maintain a steady framerate. I wonder how many people were on the fence about PS4 Pro might be inclined to get one now?
I would love to see a boost mode test done for... -Bloodborne -inFAMOUS Second Son -Uncharted 4 I'm anxious to see if these games show any improvements. Keep up the good work! :)
Simon I love and hate upgrading for this very reason. - The anxiety of wanting to try everything the first days. - Maxing out every single game and then the realization that some games can't be maxed out and putting away those games because "they suck". - Then the "what the hell" phase and don't minding playing games at medium settings.
Need to figure that out but early tests indicate that it runs quieter and cooler while drawing less power when using Boost mode versus a normal Pro game. More than base mode, though.
really? I saw a video where a PS4 pro got disasembled and there is only one 45mm Fan for active cooling, the rest is passive cooled. So IMO, following logic, Overclocking the GPU/CPU produces more heat and therefore the Fan should work harder to cool it and gets louder unless Sony modified the temperature limit in the BIOS. So it's either louder and cooler or quieter and hotter or loud and hot. But quiet and cool without suffering some issues after some extended period of testing, sounds a bit unrealistic. Drawing less Power when Using boost Mode seems possible, if Sony undervolted the Core voltage through the patch.
BeatmasterAC I'm comparing the Pro running Pro enabled games versus Boost mode. Boost mode is putting less of a strain on the hardware versus a real Pro game, basically. Haven't looked at anything else.
Emanuel Cardoso Stop spitting bullshit out of your mouth. Consoles do fake (non native) 4k and they can't even reach 30 fps besides in small shooter likes COD.
This is good for gamers like me that like to play Sony Playstation Exclusive Games that you can't play on PC. I wonder how it will perform with The Last of US Remaster, Bloodborne, Uncharted 4, God of War, Days Gone, Horizon Zero Dawn, Nioh and many other Sony Exclusive Games.
This exaclty why I purchased a PS4 Pro this November and added an 870 Evo SSD. Thanks for making this excellent video! What a wonderful time we live in!
@@leruty I don’t play as much as I used to, and I haven’t owned a PlayStation since the 1st one. I ended up going with a Glacier White PS4 Pro with a 2TB OWC Mercury Extreme Pro 6g SSD. So far I have enough of a library from all of the end of year sales that I think I’m good for the next 2 years for games. Also my main TV downstairs is a Panasonic 60” 1080p plasma. So no need to go PS5 for 4k just yet. I really love how games look on my plasma. I have it hooked up through an Mclassic that I used to use for my Wii U. The games look great with Super Sampling, and run really well.
You can definitely see and feel a difference as soon as a game drops from its target frame rate. It creates stutter because of the way VSync works. If you don't know how that works, look it up.
cdmanjak Unity was the last true ac game where you play an assassin. Origins was at least ok storywise, but the parkour was shit and the combat was super generic, And the story in odyssey completely falls apart after a while and they make you do these garbage ass side missions to level up, while still having the shitty parkour and same combat from origins. Origins was fun for me, but its not a real ac game, and looking back at it now its just a shitty witcher clone
cdmanjak Care to explain why? Dont even tell me its the bugs, i got it on release and maybe had 2 bugs where i had to close my game. Since release the game has changed a lot. I can agree that origins is ok for what it is, but give me one reason why odyssey is fun to play.
Boost mode aka "removing the limiter that lowers the pros performance for better compatibility" this is how the pro should have performed from the go. When you buy faster hardware you expect a performance boost across the board, not just a select few games.
For those who keep asking. Yes you can play on a 1080p HD TV. If you buy a PS4 Pro and get it all connected and what not, and the PS logo isn’t on the screen, just simply turn it off by holding the power button on your PS4 Pro for 7 seconds until you hear the second beep, it’ll turn off. Then switch the HDMI cable around and plug the power cable in another electrical socket. Trust me, it worked for me. I did get scared and thought I needed a 4K TV, but nope, I figured it out. I hope this helps clarify things up for those of you who needed help. Oh and great video!!!
Since bloodborne and witcher 3 were mentioned to have tests, my only suggestion is evil within. That game really would need every extra frame while tackling the akumu mode.
Runs great with GTA V especially with free aim, not sure about bloodborn, I even play ARK with high details no hiccups but when you have to render people’s buildings.
@@cptaoba3747 Main problem with GTA V is how big the game is and the slow hard drive speeds on consoles. Put a SSD if you do not want to wait half an hour for the game to load.
1070? Hahahah are you poor or something? Who plays on a 1070? Weak sauce. Seriously though this is just the boost mode. Games designed for the pro fair way better not only in fps but also fidelity. Name me a game on PC that looks better than Horizon, Zero Dawn right now. And before you jump on me I am part of the PC master race; my laptop rocks a gtx 1080.
Please Test Dying light on Ps4 Pro. I hate the framerate on my ps4 pro, it is laggy and frame drops dramatically both campaign and multiplayer so I hope the Boost mode changes it for better.
I sense Sarcasm right down your throat. The framerate on Dying Light on PS4 pro has got some frame rate problems because it wasn't optimised onto the new ps4 pro!
I don't quite see the point of buying a Scorpio. PlayStation is great because of it's amazing collection of exclusives and legendary games. Meanwhile Micro$oft just cancels any decent upcoming game it's making for 'reasons'. Talk all you want about a super duper console, it will be damn useless without any good games to play it on. And no, please don't get started about Forza, GO4 or Halo, they're absolutely dogshit compared to PS4 exclusive's. Even comparing the two is an insult to gaming. So really, the choice for sensible gamer's is to either buy a PS4 or make the jump directly to PC (since all Xbox games will be available on PC, pointless to buy Scorpio). Of course the most lethal combination is to own both a PS4 and a high powered gaming PC like I have. PC for playing multiplats and shooters at 1440p 60fps on my 1070, and the PS4 for its out-of this-world exclusives like UC4, Bloodborne, Final Fantasy, the Last Guardian and of course the upcoming Horizon Zero Dawn and Day's Gone (which Xbots and PC elitist's would kill to have on their platform).
vertonical kill to have what? PC already has enough amazing games, we don't don't beg for console games lol, stop pretending u play on PC, you're just a fanboy peasant who thinks 30fps is acceptable in 2017
yakuza zero has some frame drops and screen tearing. more so walking around the city at night. i heard the boost fixes it. give that a shot since it just came out.
Yeah I love cooking my breakfast on my console. Whenever I look in the store I think: if it can't do my eggs then what's the point? It just adds value to the system is all I'm saying.
1. Does leaving boost mode on constantly pose any long-term harm or wear down for ps4 pro system 2. Does enabling boost mode for a pro game like read dead redemtion 2 give any increased frame rate or perfomance enhancements, even if minor? 3. Im using a 1080p tv with the pro and wonder if enabling supersampling for a game like read dead 2 will result in some frame drops? Thanks
1. It shouldn't. Keep in mind that Boost Mode lets the GPU work at its default clockspeed (it's no overclocking or anything crazy like that) and still uses only half of it, so even when running an older game in boost mode the wear on the console is still much lower than when running a Pro optimised game. Obviously the console runs at slightly lower temperatures without boost mode but the difference should be perfectly negligible and not notably affect the console's life. 2. No, boost mode does not affect games that support the Pro since these already make use of the Pro's additional power (actually of much more power than you get from boost mode). 3. Running a game with supersampling is obviously more taxing than without. I don't know how stable RDR2 is exactly but you should expect lower framerates with it, yes.
I've always wondered why PC gamers come to watch console videos? Also if PC is best for games, why PC games won't sell well and why many games are console exclusives? Example Battlefield has always been a PC game but still we can see that PS4 have 4 times the players everyday. So if PC is so good I would assume that people would play on PC, instead they play on consoles (PS4 & Xbox). Maybe PC players are just jealous that they have to wait good games to be released on their platform, play shitty Ubisoft ports, deal with hackers on servers or just watch console videos from TH-cam?
CoolerFin You should do more research. Everything you said is either a flat out lie or misinformation kid. Google's your friend. Digital Foundry is for tech heads. Fanboy children you and these others dudes, use it as ammo to feel better.
David Aungerer but did you actually play them? Do you remember at least 20 titles that is exclusive and played? Or you jist brag about how many exclusive the pc has that even you don't remember playing. Probably youll just hit google and copy paste the titles here.
we come to see how easy console players are impresed, because most of you get on our stuff and start saying PS4 now has beast mode that outperforms your shity Pc, sony for life and stuff like that so we wonder what is these beast mode they are talking about and come here and laugh our ass of at how you need to oc the damn thing just to get a game like shantae to run at constant 60fps, wich a pc with a core 2 quad Q6600 wich is a 10 year old CPU does fine.
You answered your own question. More people buy consoles for gaming. It's an established convenience. Whats better to game on is a personal choice, and depends on wether the system has the games you want to play. I like dayZ, marvel vs capcom 2, streetfighter 3 and game of thrones mods. So i've got a PC. If you like zelda you've probably got a nintendo. Nobody can tell you what you like, though many do try.
How difficult would it be to tell if the boost mode affects how often games like Battlefield or Call of Duty lower the internal resolution in order to maintain the framerate?
That was one of the least taxing battlefield 4 maps. Why not try Siege of Shanghai, Dawnvreaker, or Floodzone. Maybe even the China Rising or naval strike maps which ran below 45 fps. Also, if you can test battlefield Hardline (downtown, block) where frame rate rarely went above 50. Call Of Duty Ghosts had uneven frame rates but on Stonehaven it would outright lock up for a second. That would be an interesting one to test. The Witcher 3 and Homefront, both, pre patch would be really interesting to see boosted.
What happens if you keep "Boost Mode" turned on and play a title with a custom pro patch? Will the PS4Pro prioritize the patch and ignore the boost mode? Will it create incompabilities? Or what else?
PS4 Pro patched games are already using all the system bandwidth, GPU and CPU speeds, and resources. Those patches optimize the game for that console. You wouldn't get more speed out of a game already using the full speed of the system. Boost only applies to non- patched games. Patches supersede all other options.
How does Warframe play out with the Boost Mode? Warframe often dips into the 15fps range in crowded situations. Also can we expect performance increasements on post-pro launched games that do not offer a pro mode?
BF4 Boost Mode: 60fps. Base Mode: 60. "It's dropping frames left and right on base mode." Goes down 2 whole frames. LoL. These guys head's would probably explode playing a game at 120+ fps.
can you please do a 2021 analysis of the latest 9.03 firmware update and Boost Mode on the PS4 Pro by doing a full system reset factory install and then compare the game performance with PS4 versus PS4 Pro to see if the firmware update has any performance fixes and or improvements that may have happened since four years ago?
I purchased my ps4 pro 7216b model back in November 2019, an amazing piece of hardware, but I have never used the boost mode feature but I will start using it now. I have just purchased about 40 digital games and I have 13 physical games. I ain't planning on getting next gen just yet has i am really happy with my pro and my Xbox one X, I have loads of games for my Xbox so got plenty to keep me going yet. And playing on my sharp ultra 4k hdr TV stunning picture.
Man. Blast processing was great. Temps and noise are always high on Ps4 stock. Cant imagine its any better on the pro. ~90 degrees C with a heatgun on the hottest part of a PS4 Fat.
I'm sorry but I didn't see any significant difference with the frostbite games. nobody is going to notice agame running at 58fps one second and 60 the next versus 60 one second and 60 the next. Impressive gains on Project Cars though.
exactly. I have a ps4, but I also play Warframe and other games on PC. In fast games like that, you notice when it drops to 59 FPS. Then think about CSGO player who lock to 120 FPS for pro play. It's not as important on PS4 due to the controller not being as responsive as a mouse, but it does make a difference.
why not test games that actually drop fps such as dying light gta v planetside 2 just cause 3 eso ark fallout 4 farcry (any) rainbow 6 destiny im sure theres even worse cases then the ones mentioned
Dude. The damn box lost 30 frames on a 2-D side scroller. A 2-D S I D E S C R O L L E R. Theres no point in seeing if it can run anything else. It is literal garbage.
Its not even unlocking the full potential of the PS4 pro! it uses half of the GPU only. Im impressed. Maybe someday, Sony will unlock the rest of the power, but it seems for now the other half of the GPU is limited to pro patches... But I could not be happier with this update. Good job Sony. And good job digital foundry for the analysis.
Im happy with games, as a souls fan I had to have a PS4. NiOH, Bloodborne for example. I love RPGs, PS4 provides me those. And a lot of exclusives have me interested. I am not fond of multiplayer, and in terms of singleplayer games, PS4 has that in spades. I didnt care if a frame was skipped when I had the PS4 I cared about the games I could play. But with this patch, Im just happy that Im going to have a better experience playing some of those games that arent available anywhere else. Where else will I play a God of war? Of course people can say PC is better in terms of performance, and yes it sure is. But if a game I want to play is not there I dont care how much performance ur PC is getting. I know exclusives are now treated as a minority, and not all of them I want to play, but there are a lot I want from Sony, so I will stick with Playstation. Thank you for ur concern, but I know what Im doing.
Taha Sedjal currently the feature (and the update it comes in) is still in beta, so who knows, with a little luck they might just open up the rest of the GPU upon release of the firmware.
Taha Sedjal hey I'm not knocking you cause you like what you like but just remember PC will always be superior to gaming especially library and graphically wise...Imma console gamer too but once i built my first PC I prefer it over console gaming anytime
I wish we had options on console. It seems like we always want more but if i want to play 720 p 60 fps let me. And if u want to push your system to the edge at 4k 20 fps they should let u
Sorry if i missed some detail in the video, but does Boost Mode also give some sort of advantage to games that already have a Pro patch? I.e. If i were to play something like, say, Deus Ex Mankind Divided on a PS4 Pro with the Pro settings (4K mode, better visuals, etc.), would Boost Mode get rid of some of the framerate drops?
Yo DF are you guys going to do a Zelda: BOTW Switch vs WiiU comparison? I need to know which to get. Anyone else who wants to know please thumbs up this comment!
If you care about a higher resolution or stable framerates and don't mind waiting a few months to spend $300 for a Switch then get the Switch version, if you don't care about a higher resolution or stable framerate and don't want to wait for the Switch or spend $300 then get the Wii U version. There, I've saved you from having to wait for a video comparison if you wanted to get Zelda on day one. The performance differences are just a stable framerate and 900p on the Switch, it's mostly dependent on wether or not you're willing to wait to buy a new console for that version.
Thanks, but there's more going on. The two versions already show significant differences in lighting systems, colour palettes, draw distances and many more things beyond just framerate and resolution. I'm already aware, as many are, that the WiiU version will be 720p and the Switch 900p. I'm concerned about more because, so far, it seems as though the lighting system is actually far superior on the WiiU version. It may be that the Switch port was not given the same care that the WiiU version was.
if you don't already have a switch pre ordered, buy the wii u version so you can still experience the game day one and hold out on the switch till its more readily available or till mario odyssey comes out later this year, there I potentially saved you 300 bucks lol
I want the very best graphics, that run as smooth as possible. in that order ;-) Anyone who would prefer *Slightly better graphics wile sacrificing frame rate? Boggles my mind...
Not sure what exactly are you saying, but all of those games have Ps4 Pro patches which either make the game run at a higher resolution, with extra visual enhancements, or at higher frame rates.
I played at a friend's psvr on the pro, I was hallucinated how much more immersive than other vr headset, with no visible pixel and a hallucinating 3D encompassing virtually the whole view, I try Farpoint and rush of blood. The feeling of presence is incredible, I advice to all the gamer to try it, on farpoint is violent, extreme precision, but try, because the sensation is very pronounced and takes to the trip. The implication is unbelievable with a good return of very creepy force on the gun even more true than the guns of Time Crisis. Jubilatory, testing with a friend. And I'm not talking about the movie that you can see in 3D on the headset, it's crazy.
I Love Sony, but.... Strategy of 2017: - Hey let's make not one but 3 version of PlayStation 4 so we can confuse the consumers. - Hey let's make a PlayStation "4.5" so the game will run smoother (not speaking about optimisation like Battlefield) - Advertising TV and TH-cam, sell the Pro for "Boost" the sales. Well played Sony, well played! What I think: Honestly I have the PS4 "FAT" mine is a special model that one all Red about METAL GEAR SOLID THE PHANTOM PAIN, and I will never sell it, sure the New Pro have some interesting features but for Me seems just a "Commercial Handle" for selling more, this features seems to be some cut content from the Standard Version, and in my honest opinion the only reason for switch to Pro is to be a new customer, in that case would be great if you buy the Pro + 4K HDR TV + Sony Platinum Wireless Headset.
Mattia Tyler ... the new PS4 is just the slim model. It just replaces the older version that isn't being sold anymore. Sony always comes out with a slim model.
I would like to see Arkham City being tested once again. The port's performance is all over the place and I think it would be interesting to analyze it.
Because judging by the way they type and the things they say, they're all virgin beta neckbeards. They're they type to yell "GOD DOESN'T EXIST!!!" if somebody says "God bless". It's a deep seeded sense of unwarranted pretentiousness, they literally cannot fathom that other people have their own reasons for not being a PC gamer. Just try to imagine being a person that feels superior to others because of the way they consume video games...yeah it's hard for me too. And any other normal and well-adjusted adult.
I bought a Pro on release day and I was worried that Sony won't deliver.
I'm not worried anymore. Well done, Sony!
Jaikee GER delivered what exactly???
Israel Ruelas - around 5-10FPS boost
Nobody cares though
i used it for my VR and my Vr Porn... good investment.
Did your ps4 pro have a really loud fan or did you get lucky at launch?
HaplessIdiot mine is loud and gets quite hot but I don't mind that much
60fps instead of 57fps in Battlefield, what a difference, it's finally playable.
RedVIII lol
why are you here anyway?
I think that was a typo. Did you mean 60fps instead of 48fps? Yeah that is a noticeable difference.
SALT!!
I've been waiting for this video :D
Nice
Urh.. so I've had a PS4 Pro for a year and never knew about boost mode. Now I can squeeze a lot more out of my new system before getting a PS5 in 3-4 years time.
Same tbh I was just bored scrolling through my PS4 settings when I came across Boost mode and I immediately searched this video up lol
Same here brother. We can wait till the slim version of the os5 comes out
Lol the ps4 is already fucking dying. Can barely hold 30fps in newer games and won't stand a chance in 3 years

• Dark Souls II: Scholar of the First Sin
• Until Dawn
• Batman: The Telltale Series
• Batman: Arkham Knight
• Resident Evil: Revelations 2
• The Evil Within
• Alien: Isolation
• Murdered: Soul Suspect
• The Dead Rising remasters
• Rainbow Six: Siege
and the two obvious requests:
• Bloodborne
&
• The Witcher III
Thank you DF for your great content!
Heisenberg it's already consistently 60fps
U forgot Just Cause 3.
FirPtl That's a good one to test too.
As a PC enthusiast/assembler
I gotta give credit to the PS4 Pro for making something 4k/60 FPS capable at $400
(For all those PC wannabe fanboys, you need at least $500 to make a entry level PC)
Beafowl PC gaming has a higher initial cost, but upgrades are a lot cheaper. Upgrading from ps4 to ps4 pro for $400 is expensive for just a GPU upgrade. The ps4 pro equivalent GPU is around an rx 470 and rx 480 which can be found for under $200.
name a single ps4 title that runs at native 4k/60
4k 60? oh please enlight me just 1 game as an example?
You're gonna deal with a lot more troubleshooting on PC, especially when using mods on games.
i wanna see Witcher 3 and Fallout 4 tested

ATW Tech - Alpha R2

No Just Cause 3?!?
The most infamous Game on the Ps4 in terms of frame rate and it wasn't covered.
WHY?
Metrodragon It was probably just forgotten. I actually forgot it existed until I saw it in a local GameStop.
Metrodragon simple. if they make an individual video for every title you mentioned they get farr more money.
Al. Lopez, He wasn't talking about the Infamous game. He meant Just Cause 3 is notorious for frame rate issues. Infamous is just another word for notorious.
Metrodragon That's because it's getting its own dedicated video.
Views. For a later video. Understandable.
As a pc owner...got to say I'm pretty impressed...they did a great job!!
Sony? Because changing a few bios settings isn't a great job.
The devs? Because aiming for 60 fps in a 2-D game and actually getting 40-60 isn't a "great job" either.
As a console gamer, got to say I'm pretty impressed as well. They did a great job.... - _-
@@youtuberobbedmeofmyname To be honest, you're right.

2. Try every game in own library
3. Play one of these games for the rest of the day
Simon I love and hate upgrading for this very reason.
- The anxiety of wanting to try everything the first days.
- Maxing out every single game and then the realization that some games can't be maxed out and putting away those games because "they suck".
- Then the "what the hell" phase and don't minding playing games at medium settings.

ok, what about power consumption, heat and noise tests during boost mode?
Haven't looked at anything else.
ok cool
John Linneman Why did it appear to have higher frame time difference on the beginning? It runs boost mode on patched games?
That's a nice improvement, I can't understand how this wasn't released before.

It absolutely is clear as day when you go from frame dropping, even if it's only a few frames, with lots of judder to a locked 60fps.

How these incredible digital foundry videos get any thumbs downs ill never understand

When you buy faster hardware you expect a performance boost across the board, not just a select few games.

How about Bloodborne? :)
I don't think it will be completely fixed because of a frame timing problem, but it should be as smooth as it can get without a patch by FROM.
Please test JUST CAUSE 3!!!!! Amazing in depth coverage as usual; good job, guys!

I don't quite see the point of buying a Scorpio. PlayStation is great because of it's amazing collection of exclusives and legendary games. Meanwhile
Micro$oft just cancels any decent upcoming game it's making for 'reasons'.

1. Does leaving boost mode on constantly pose any long-term harm or wear down for ps4 pro system
Overwatch sold very well on PC and MMOs generally sell better as well.
It would be interesting to see the witcher 3 in boost mode.
This is the video I've been waiting for!
I had a PS4 pro for almost a year until I realized I had boost mode but I didn’t really know if I did anything I’m really glad this video exist lol
The most taxing map/area in bf4 is still locker.
The middle point of the map with 64 players crushes even some pc‘s 😃
What happens if you keep "Boost Mode" turned on and play a title with a custom pro patch? Will the PS4Pro prioritize the patch and ignore the boost mode? Will it create incompabilities? Or what else?
Senio Rotondi It will ignore boost mode.
I have a Pro and never heard of the feature until this video...
Sam Sant it's coming soon to update 4.50
the boost mode is still in beta and coming out sometime this month in the new patch.
BF4 Boost Mode: 60fps. Base Mode: 60. "It's dropping frames left and right on base mode." Goes down 2 whole frames. LoL. These guys head's would probably explode playing a game at 120+ fps.
a 5 fps boost.
#4thepeasants
funbrute31 lol, i thought all you pc guys lived for those extra few frames....
if you're still not at least 1080p and a sustained 60fps or above what's the point?
+Harrison Mode Not at all, there's so much more than just extra frames and prettier textures.
when i buy a new gpu i will get like double the frame rate and will get to use better graphics settings
funbrute31 it's not for a crazy fps increase its mostly for locking the frame rate so it doesn't drop
can you please do a 2021 analysis of the latest 9.03 firmware update and Boost Mode on the PS4 Pro by doing a full system reset factory install and then compare the game performance with PS4 versus PS4 Pro to see if the firmware update has any performance fixes and or improvements that may have happened since four years ago?
You need to send him a message on Twitter
can you try Witcher 3? Please. I cant wait to play this game with no drops in city...
lol you will be waiting a long time
Bulwa Bu play it on PC then
bitbat9 I hate Microsoft and Windows soo much that I cant use PC
Peasant.
PC is the ultimate version. Sub 30 second loading times and higher fps.
Would rather have a Pro patch, boost mode helps on some games but its very un-optimized
Damn, Boost Mode is far more impressive than i thought.
Boosting to 2012 mid range PC performance. Much wow!
They can finally see what 40fps feels like lol.
I don't know, I was pretty disappointed with the PC port for Nioh. Wasn't really getting good performance on that one.
400 € you cant expect 600 € PC performance for 400 € + gamepad + hdmi cable and other stuff
Nejc 400 dollars and you beat a ps4 pro. You also get access to more games, programs and overall features.
Simon IF you buy the parts on sale, and so you can with ps4 pro, just buy an used one
why no actual loading times testing?
Bloodborne
Dark Souls III
The Witcher 3
DQ Heroes
FFXV
The Evil Within
Fallout 4
GTA V
The Last Guardian
MGS V
Ratchet & Clank
Yakuza 0
Hessey A shame.
Hessey sell ur og ps4. Put that money towards a pro. Especially if u have the launch ps4 from 2013, you've already gotten your money's worth
Thank you for all these clarifications
*Fallout 4, Bloodborne and Furi would be nice to see.* But what about power consumption, heat and noise using the blast proces... I mean, boost mode?
Fernando Maverick Bethesda released a ps4 pro patch yesterday
Man. Blast processing was great. Temps and noise are always high on Ps4 stock. Cant imagine its any better on the pro. ~90 degrees C with a heatgun on the hottest part of a PS4 Fat.
Battlefront and GTA 5 please
Hairoo Wasn't Battlefront locked to 60fps?
I'm sorry but I didn't see any significant difference with the frostbite games. nobody is going to notice agame running at 58fps one second and 60 the next versus 60 one second and 60 the next. Impressive gains on Project Cars though.
downphoenix "clear as day"
downphoenix If the frame rate jumps every second to being locked, it makes a huge difference
exactly. I have a ps4, but I also play Warframe and other games on PC. In fast games like that, you notice when it drops to 59 FPS. Then think about CSGO player who lock to 120 FPS for pro play. It's not as important on PS4 due to the controller not being as responsive as a mouse, but it does make a difference.
dunkey would be proud to see knack on the boost mode
Nice to see the improvements on fps. Think you can revisit Until Dawn? The game is beautiful but runs rather poorly on a base ps4
why not test games that actually drop fps such as
dying light
gta v
planetside 2
just cause 3
eso
ark
fallout 4
farcry (any)
rainbow 6
destiny
im sure theres even worse cases then the ones mentioned
they did test games that actually drop fps and even showed the graphs.
Shit games other than gta v which runs great on Ps4.
dildo swaggins actually r6 on the pro has a 60+ FPS boost now I can play t hunt up to 95 FPS on PS4 pro
Your mum
Taha Sedjal
You're happy for mediocrity? 😂
Most games on PS4 are bottlenecked by the CPU so they really wouldn't benefit much if it all from the GPU being fully unlocked.
Great work again John!
I wish we had options on console. It seems like we always want more but if i want to play 720 p 60 fps let me. And if u want to push your system to the edge at 4k 20 fps they should let u
Until Dawn has a lot of frame drops. I wonder how the boost mode handles it
Bloodborne?? Will it magically fix the frame pacing hug? :)
DuckAlert Beats Should be possible.
This make lot worst and run at half speed.
TheDog7118 ?
Thank you for that great test!
I’ve had my Pro for the longest and I NEVER knew about this. It’s been turned off😑💀
Could you please test out Battlefield 1 and Overwatch on Ps4 Pro Boost Mode and compare it to the Standard Ps4.
Cool...still building a PC though.
Christian Rom Jar
Clever decision.
Christian Rom Jar smart man
How much you did pay so far by building a PC?
OmniOmegaKiller $300 lucked up on a eBay auction lol
Sorry if i missed some detail in the video, but does Boost Mode also give some sort of advantage to games that already have a Pro patch?
I.e. If i were to play something like, say, Deus Ex Mankind Divided on a PS4 Pro with the Pro settings (4K mode, better visuals, etc.), would Boost Mode get rid of some of the framerate drops?
No. I know, it's been a year, but no.
Bernie wants to steal my frames
Bernie Sanders
wii u has better graphics than the switch at breath of the wild
I want the very best graphics, that run as smooth as possible. in that order ;-)
Anyone who would prefer *Slightly better graphics wile sacrificing frame rate? Boggles my mind...
Ditto, mah man.
1-infamous second sun
2-battlefield 1
3-rise of the tomb raider
4-uncharted 4
5-doom
6-ratchet and clank
Not sure what exactly are you saying, but all of those games have Ps4 Pro patches which either make the game run at a higher resolution, with extra visual enhancements, or at higher frame rates.
AAJ ur mum
You should test just cause 3 as it has really bad fps spikes.
just cause 3 That also happens on pc if you have a 5400 rpm HDD. just cause 3 needs a SSD
That is true
Pretty Useless on most titles as PS4 Pro's boost mode just fluctuates the fps so much that you will prefer a locked 30 fps or more than a updown fps
Dark souls 3 please
The PS4 Pro still holds up extremely good in 2023 even with the next generation consoles coming out it still holds up good.
I Love Sony, but....
Strategy of 2017:
- Hey let's make not one but 3 version of PlayStation 4 so we can confuse the consumers.
- Hey let's make a PlayStation "4.5" so the game will run smoother (not speaking about optimisation like Battlefield)
- Advertising TV and TH-cam, sell the Pro for "Boost" the sales.
Well played Sony, well played!
What I think:
Honestly I have the PS4 "FAT" mine is a special model that one all Red about METAL GEAR SOLID THE PHANTOM PAIN, and I will never sell it, sure the New Pro have some interesting features but for Me seems just a "Commercial Handle" for selling more, this features seems to be some cut content from the Standard Version, and in my honest opinion the only reason for switch to Pro is to be a new customer, in that case would be great if you buy the Pro + 4K HDR TV + Sony Platinum Wireless Headset.
Mattia Tyler ... the new PS4 is just the slim model. It just replaces the older version that isn't being sold anymore. Sony always comes out with a slim model.
Where is Bloodborne??
This is the console that is going to provide 4k? if it can't even manage 60 fps how will it manage 4k?
ChEILoZ
ignoramus!
THE-MED yeah guess I've must've missed some tech magic cause I don't see it
ChEILoZ
lol, really? i gonna assume you're new to this channel because that's the only to explain your ignorance.
ChEILoZ it doesn't. Instead it does checkerboard rendering which they say looks near identical to native 4k.
Boost mode only uses the improved cpu, not the gpu
I would like to see Arkham City being tested once again. The port's performance is all over the place and I think it would be interesting to analyze it.
"Boost Mode" aight my ps4 pro is about to take off
If u have a new model jt wont
@@Jason74357 wdym by new model?
Why do I imagine most PC players (not all) looking like Gollum from lord of the rings?
Because judging by the way they type and the things they say, they're all virgin beta neckbeards. They're they type to yell "GOD DOESN'T EXIST!!!" if somebody says "God bless". It's a deep seeded sense of unwarranted pretentiousness, they literally cannot fathom that other people have their own reasons for not being a PC gamer. Just try to imagine being a person that feels superior to others because of the way they consume video games...yeah it's hard for me too. And any other normal and well-adjusted adult.
iShootUDrive1 lmao Best comment ever lol
IKR lol
Joaquin Romero victorica triggered lol
@@FIDEL_CASHFLOW_ Perfect answer. Have you met a hardcore PC elitist in real life? Man, they painful to deal with.
OMG! Thank you GOD!!! Finally I can play BF4 normally.
PYT there's a 5 fps difference lol
Well, sometimes framerate drops till 48-50, and I can be very annoying.
PYT for a second though
Sure, it's enough to ruin my experience. Try to play siege of shanghai 64x64 and you will see.
PYT I do and it plays fine lol. People are hyping this boost mode up way too much
It's great to see that gaming experience will be improved in a bunch of games for a lot of people!
