How to Paint the Ocean in Oils - Large Seascape Painting "Beginnings" by Eva Volf

- This painting time lapse shows the process of creating my new large ocean oil painting "Beginnings". The original seascape painting measures 60x48 inches and is in private collection now.
I used a reference photo I took on a cloudy morning on Cape Hatteras in the Outer Banks, North Carolina.
Here I offer an insight into my technique and hope that all my artist-friends will find it useful or at least entertaining. I strongly urge you not to make copies of this painting for commercial use (as it is copyrighted) but you're most welcome to try out some techniques I taught myself over the years, like my absolute favorite one - finger painting the sky.
I used the following colors to create this moody ocean painting:
titanium white, ultramarine blue, viridian, burnt umber, Payne's gray, cadmium yellow, Prussian blue, a touch of premixed Portland warm gray (can be easily mixed). I also used Liquin as a medium. This painting took me 5 sessions x 4 hours and I let it dry completely in between them.

@@chensherria4363 Thank you! This painting took me 5 sessions x 4 hours and I let it dry completely in between them.
Very nice painting
Thanks for answering that question
My wife (Shari) liked to paint. She did it as a hobby and was learning. She didn't have the chance to find her niche' before passing but I know she loved the beach. She would've loved watching this. Thank you for the memories. ~Greg
Shari Gaunt thank you for sharing her story, Greg. God Bless you!

Spectacular ! Wow ! Wow ! Wow !
Thank you
I don't think there are adequate words in my vocabulary that express my appreciation for your work, that compare to what you express with paint on canvas. This, in my opinion, is your best yet! I watch a LOT of painters on TH-cam, mostly oil and watercolor, and some acrylic, but always looking for insights and inspiration. You are exceptional, and I hope you continue sharing your work with us for many years to come! Thank you!
Randy Smith your kind words made my day, Randy! Thank you for your encouragement!
Randy Smith le
bellisimo......que lindo tu trabajo felicitacions
At the end you say thank you for watching, think I'm right in saying it's us to be thanking you. Such a joy and privilege to watch your artwork evolve from start as naturally in to so much beauty. I'm so grateful for your descriptions of materials and methods too it never fails to inspire to create and share. I love painting the ocean too and it always captivates me but in my 58 years I've never saw a more talented and generous teacher.
Jim Harrison thank you for saying it, Jim, your kind words made my day 😀
Very nice work.
Thank you Eva for your generosity to share your talent and your process with us! I always felt at home by the water and the ever changing clouds which are my never ending joy! Forever grateful!

I absolutely LOVE LOVE LOVE this. It is amazing! I would LOVE to own this. You are a genius! :)
Amber Ackroyd Thanks Amber, this seascape is still available: etsy.me/2toVFyK
This foam is the most important thing. Hardly anyone can faithfully reproduce sea waves. Especially on the high seas. And here it is as it should be. Super !
Amazing beautiful realism! I do love the sea, and it's quite difficult to painted as you do, !
Engaging surreal journey! Thank you ! Brilliant!
Absolutely awesome!!! How can people not like this? And if you don't! It's not for you don't watch it!! Instead of putting thumb down!
Elite Edi thanks for your support

Simply beautiful. I feel like I could walk into that painting ,and thank you for sharing your incredible talent with us. You inspire me to try to paint.🙂 I guess I need to go buy some paints first 😂
Thank you, sweetheart! Give it a try but beware: it's addictive: once you start painting, you can't give it up.
Eva Volf ; you’re the first painter I’ve heard mention the addictiveness of painting - it is indeed and I now don’t feel so alone with my addiction. A lovely painting - seascapes are my passion too 👍
Peter Elmer of all the addictions, I think it’s the most harmless one
Beautiful! And interesting to watch your techniques for foam patterns.
Sei davvero molto brava complimenti Eva👏👏👏❤️❤️🌹🌹🌹
Thank you for this! I'm not at all a painter but it's so calming watching you making magic.... Fantastic!

How wonderful, enjoy and good luck!
Gorgeous! Thank you for the demo!
I think that your work IS the most powerful can be done by human artist
You’re too kind! 🙏😊🩵🌊
Parabéns ! Belíssima obra de arte. Receba nossos calorosos cumprimentos. Brasil.
fantastic!!!!
Thanks, Luke!
You have persistence! I wished the wave on the right had brighter translucent “Aqua”, and maybe a wet sand edge shows the waves’ retraction. But it’s beautiful, thank you for sharing!
Truly amazing she is a great artist . Being in this lockup situation I have been try to turn my hand to painting, having seen this video however, I shall go out to my garden shed to morrow take my paintings and make a bonfire, thank you.
Hi Alexander, the main thing is to enjoy the process of painting, it really helps relieve stress if you don’t expect to create a masterpiece every time. For every good painting I have 2 not so good ones that no one sees, often I sand them and paint over them, reusing the canvases or just fix older pieces I don’t like anymore if they’re fixable.
Beautiful painting. Have you thought of making a instructional DVD video to help beginners like me?
Gary Thornton Hi Gary, thanks for your question. Yes, I definitely should do it. Don’t know when though. Right now you have 3 bored abs always hungry kids at home due to Ohio lockdown
Beautiful painting, love the details and depth in the painting ❤
Maravilloso, me ha encantado, de las mejores marinas que he visto.. Enhorabuena, saludos desde España.

Eva make us watching with love and passion. Eva Best 😉❤
Gorgeous paiting......Im a fan now...thanks for sharing your techniques I will make one soon. God bless you more 😊
I believe this is the best video I've seen by you. It seemed you did more explaining of the details. I like that.
It would be great if you could create some short videos (normal speed) on a few of your techniques, ie: ripples in water, intricate foam patterns, cloud layering, blending, etc.
Btw, how long did this painting take you? A painting like this would take me months 😟
CD P I’ll consider doing shorter real time videos. This painting took me 5 sessions x 4 hours, and I let it dry in between them.
Complimenti. Bellissima opera. 😘
The painting is absolutely beautiful. I’m fortunate to have such a talent. Thank you for sharing. What do you do with all of your paintings?
Jude Thanks a lot, Jude! I sell them online: check out my Etsy shop EvaVolfSeascapes.etsy.com
lovely painting sister
Awesome work! Just one question, do you paint over the fresh oil? Or wait for it to dry?
And if so, how does the previous layer doesn't mix with the new one?
Thanks for reminding me that you CAN paint with your fingers! LOL Many of us get "stuck" in brushes and proper implements, but you can use whatever gets the job done.
Exactly! You’re most welcome
This is NOT a How to paint video its a time laps video
true
You can still learn something from it
I don’t think anyone will watch it for 7-10 hours straight, that was approximately the time it took me to paint it
Thank you for sharing your beautiful talent.
So nice of you
Excellent work, magnificent technique, wonderful work of art of great reality. Master, Congratulations
Молодец! Супер! Живая картина! От нее веет прохладой воды! Здорово!

EVA!! Wow.... so beautiful.😍
its so fabulous you finished this huge painting in just 1 day!
Thank you, actually it took me about 3 weeks to finish it. My sessions had to be spread out 4-5 days apart to let the previous layer of oils dry
Wow!! wonderful!
Non ci sono parole per esprimere la bellezza di questo dipinto sei una grande artista
this was super helpful to figure out the fundamentals to painting the ocean i've always had trouble with the always changing indefinite shapes and the color tones so having this was an amazing tool
