4:24 says in elvish ''I give hope to men(Elrond), I keep none for myself(Aragorn)'' this are the last words that Aragorn's mother said to him before she died. The fact that detail was included is awesome.
I always liked to think that she kinda said it tongue-in-cheek, since the name Aragorn had been using was "Estel" (I believe Elrond had given it to him while fostering him) ..., the Sindarin word for "hope". She literally gave the world hope. ;-)
@@Dusty1114the double meaning is definitely intentional from Aragorn's mother. As written, when Gilraen says "I gave Hope to the Dunedain, I have kept no hope for myself." only the first usage of "Hope" is capitalized.

+Dina Issakova And that the very condition Elrond establishes for Arwen and Aragorn's relationship is that he must become King of both Gondor and Arnor first... He doesn't like the idea from the very beginning, and now that Arwen's dying... It's a heartbreaking scene
How old is Arwen? Since elves were immortal it's creepy to think about Arwen being fully grown while Aragorn is still an infant, then falling in love with him when he becomes an adult.
About their last exchange in Quenya (High elven) : Aragorn was raised in Rivendell, as all Chieftains of the Dunedain, the line of the kings of Arthedain and the last descendants of Isildur, were, ever since the end of the North Kingdom of Arnor. His given name was Estel, which means "hope" in Quenya. It was said that his mother, Gilraen, knew some of his destiny, as she had the gift of foresight. When Elrond revealed his true name and lineage to him, Aragorn was to set out into the world to fight Sauron's evil for many decades. When he came to bid farewell to his mother, her last words to him were the same words they spoke now : Onen i-estel Edain. U-chebin estel anim. "I give hope (Estel, her son) to men. I keep none for myself."
@James Kessler Ever since I saw the movie in theaters I've wondered that very thing! What was the conversation that had King Theoden looking the way he did and taking his leave? I think Elrond told him who Aragorn really was, the High King of Gondor.
I feel so bad for Elrond. First he lost his parents, then his adoptive uncle and possibly his adoptive father, then he lost his twin brother, then his wife (though I will add that she's still alive, she just can't return to Middle Earth), and now he's losing his daughter. Someone please give this guy a hug, he really needs one.
His choice to belong to the Eldar and not the Edain entails the suffers of an immortal life. He had the choice and took it, through him, the lines of the Halfelves were reconnected
Not really. Almost 90% of the Fantasy genre for books, TV shows, and movies follow the "born to be" trope, including Game of Thrones and Harry Potter. Movies like Army of Darkness could be used as an example of genre counter-point though.
Fun Fact: In every movie like this one, there is always what is called the "jewel sword". The jewel sword is the one REAL sword on set. Normally actors don't use it, it's more a mascot. Viggo insisted on using the jewel sword.
+Joey Fredrickson well the sword he uses in LOTR 1,2 is also real as he almost got arrested for walking around with it, as he was asked to walk with it to sort of be in character, he dined with the sword and the police came in, but left as they found out he was from the LOTR set.
A masterpiece of Dwarven artifice, reforged by the hands of Elven masters, to be the destined blade of the High King of Gondor and Arnor, ancient realms of Men. Andúril is the hopes of the Free Peoples forged into a single, keen form.
In short, Elrond's speech to Aragorn is telling him, "You know, I was fine with packing up and leaving- But my daughter is mixed into this now because she loves you, so don't you dare fuck up. Take this sword and give those orcs what for. Do it for daddy's little princess. *single emotion filled elven tear*"
It’s so unbelievable to me that Jackson was able to not only faithfully adapt perhaps the greatest, most daunting fantasy story every written, but improve upon parts of it with scenes like this. For those who haven’t read the books, Aragorn already has the reforged Narcil prior to meeting the Hobbits in Dale. This entire sequence was added from scratch, and yet it feels so integral and monumental.
Don't know, I like Aragorn's character in the books better exactly because of this difference. In the books he has accepted his fate as a future king by the time the journey starts - he leaves Imladris already with reforged Narsil. He knows it is his destiny and he is ready for it, even though it's not what he desires. In the movies for some reason it takes Arwen almost dead for him to accept his fate. Almost like he accepts it only because he wants so save her - which is romantic, but ruins the whole "Aragorn is the True King" plot. I like it better when Aragorn knows his fate and carries it with responsibility and wisdom, if not some pride, than when he takes it almost unwillingly and being forced. Maybe the movie version is more human, but the book version makes more sense in the legendarium. I've also heard that Faramir's character was changed in the movies sort of in a bad way (he falls under the temptation of the Ring, which never happened in the books, and he just doesn't treat Frodo and Sam really well) because of the fact that the writers thought people wouldn't accept Aragorn as the King if Faramir were too nice (because, you know, Aragorn as the King is kind of a rival to Faramir who is the Steward of Gondor). And you know - with Aragorn like he is in the movies, it makes sense! In the books you never doubt Aragorn is *the King*. In the movies... Well, I have already written about that. I don't say I don't like the movie version at all, it is interesting and adds some tension and is more cinematographic (duh), but the book version is just more logical in Tolkien's world (again, duh - Tolkien wrote it, so, obviously). The True King is not supposed to meet his destiny just because there was no other choice to save his love, he should meet it with pride.
He never went near Dale in the books and he met the hobbits in Bree. And he was carrying the broken shards of the sword. Try reading the books yourself
imagine risking your life fighting for rohan then the king tells you to wake up the homeless ranger guy then he points a blade at you and youre just trying to help
But he got to brag about it later, assuming he survived Pellenor...ah, fuck it, nobody back in Rohan would believe him. Mumakil, Witch Kings, Gates of Mordor....
@marjoriecoey3418 Eh, it actually has quite realistic proportions. This is fairly normal. The swords you usually see in Hollywood are the unrealistic ones. Often they look like a nerf gun does compared to a real gun.
@@user-rx3uq9fs2mtechnically thats a hand-and-a-half sword aka bastard sword. But to get my original point across look, for example, at the swords in netflixes the witcher.
I love how Vigo shows the physical weight of touching the sword. You see the weight, the burden that he is inheriting with that legacy. So damn well done
@@YorgarAn easy way to illustrate that is with the physical weight of it though. 😊 They pulled a similar trick with the ring. Illustrating the great burden of it when Bilbo takes it off it falls straight to the ground with almost no bounce at all, giving it the appearance of something very heavy and burdensome.
I honestly think there’s other movies that are just as awesome as LotR. However, in the case of the fantasy genre, I’d LOVE to see movies that are just as amazing as LotR.
When the government isnt doing anything, businesses are closed, restaurants are laying people off, the economy is going downhill, Americans turning against each other, and the rest of 2020 going to shit: Elrond: Our list of allies grows thin
Gray Fullbuster Maybe not a disaster but it definitely would not be the same. Cage is best when he's allowed to be a goofball, he can't pull off anything really regal. Which is probably why he's never been picked to play Superman either.
I love that Aragorn when he accepts the sword (and puts on an air of kindliness) must be the closest thing Elrond could get to seeing his brother Elros again in all his splendor as the first king of Numenor.
All that is gold does not glitter, Not all those who wander are lost; The old that is strong does not wither, Deep roots are not reached by the frost. From the ashes a fire shall be woken, A light from the shadows shall spring; Renewed shall be blade that was broken, The crownless again shall be king.
@Jeremy Brookes actually Bilbo is the one who originally wrote it. In the "Council of Elrond" chapter, Bilbo gets a little miffed at people doubting Aragorn and recites it. He then sits down and asides to Frodo that he wrote that about the "Dunadan" as he knows him when Aragorn first told Bilbo about himself. Gandalf only included it in the letter so they would know he's really him.
@@jangtheconqueror "All that is gold does not glitter" doesn't mean "gold doesn't glitter." It means "some things that are made of gold do not glitter." Aragorn is "made of gold", but he "doesn't glitter". Tolkien reverted the older, more pessimistic saying "All that glitters is not gold". The modern saying was popularized by Shakespeare, but Tolkien surely dug deeper into the history of the phrase en.wikipedia.org/wiki/All_that_glitters_is_not_gold edit: I'm not implying that the phrasing COULDN'T be as you said it should be, I'm just saying that the meaning is really the same.
"They will answer to the King of Gondor!!! Anduril, Flame of the West.... Forged from the shards of Narsil..." *Literally cries eyes out* This music, this movie. This trilogy.
I love how Elrond goes through almost pitying Aragorn in terms of how utterly out matched he is, which he knows but Aragorn doesn't, to whole-heartedly daring him to summon the full might that's actually available to him in the span of minutes. "Prove you're worthy of my daughter. Save her, save them all."
King Theoden to Elrond before Aragon enters that tent: "What's that you have there under your robe?" Elrond: "A gift for Aragon." And thus King Theoden tried to get out of there as quickly as he could when Aragon walks in.
I just fear that if they did that they'd remove, add, or change things that aren't true to Tolkien's vision, or at the very least true to what these movies have done. Too many times have remastered versions of movies modified the original matter too much to where it becomes relatively damaging.
@@joevaghn457Exactly. You know that they would change the appearances of the characters or the story to make it more “inclusive”. There is nothing I want more in life than a remake of this but the characters cannot be replaced. The perfect casting is by far the best part of the trilogy.
You can feel Elrond's desperation here. He's really hoping that Aragorn would take the sword as a sign that he will take the fight to Sauron and become King of Gondor. Elrond is hoping for the best for his daughter. This wasn't just about Middle Earth -- this was personal for him too.
None but Hugo Weaving could have done the role of Elrond such perfect justice. He conveyed the majesty, elegance, and oft subtle but incredible power the Lord of Rivendell commanded magnificently. With poignant skill, he brought one of the greatest characters of the all Tolkien’s works to life, and to memorable effect.
It really is Aragorn who really restores Elrond's faith in the race of men. Hugo Weaving and Viggo Mortensen perform these roles to the best they could ever be!
From his perspective, makes a lot of sense - even the greatest of men, those who could surpass the elves, fell in Númenor. Their blood was now diluted, barely a shadow of their glorious past. Yet, right in front of him, he sees a human king who shines as bright as during the days of old.
+Derrick Liu I always imagined Elrond told Theoden that Aragorn had to take the Dimhold road for them to have a chance in the upcoming battle. Later when asked why Aragorn leaves Theoden states "He leave because he must".
caderly123 because Anduril (or Narsil, rather, which was reforged into Anduril) was an heirloom from the old kings of Gondor. Aragorn's doubt wasn't really a big thing in the first movie (or book); it's only as he approaches his rightful city that it starts surfacing. In the book Anduril is treated like just another random powerup for Aragorn "oh hey, check out this wicked awesome sword, go kill some orcs". We understand it's symbolic, the king going back to his kingdom should have the king's sword, but I feel it has more impact here in the third movie, at the peak of Aragorn's doubt.
+Andrew Wang well especially in the 1st movie, Aragorn mentions a lot of doubt about his fellow "men of Gondor", it's the bromance with Boromir that warms him up
You may be right about the sword, the king of Gondor theme obviously connects much more with the last movie. And it was always obvious that the sword is highly symbolic. In the first movie it is a symbol of the near-defeat of the high kings of men, "no more than a broken heirloom" - as the Anduril, it's a symbol of hope and a sign that the old prophecy (?) is now becoming true since the sword has been reforged. Also in this scene the father-in-law giving Aragorn the sword can be seen as a little kick in the ass, but also as a very groundbreaking moment for Aragorn as he is most probably thinking, "you actually did reforge the sword, and for ME?" - the movie Elrond seems like the foster father who never saw Aragorn live up to his expectations, and never gave him serious encouragament (also we find an analogue to the story of Beren - Luthien - Thingol, if you know that story). It is only through Arwen's insistence and out of desperation that Elrond finally does the move (of reforging) and recognizes that there is more to this ranger than what he usually gives credit for. Then again, at this point Aragorn has survived and led the party through Moria, and lead men to victory at Helm's Deep against overwhelming odds.
I recently watched Lord of the Rings for the very first time, and this is probably one of the most badass and emotional fictional scenes I’ve ever witnessed. Watched this with an incredible sound system and that score by Howard Shore gave me goosebumps leading up to the moment when Aragorn pulls the sword out. This scene was just so epic.
When I watch LOTR it makes me realise how far films have fallen. Back then movies like LOTR and Gladiator inspired you to have strength, courage and hope. Now most fantasy movies are just nothing more than bloodshed and debauchery.
"The man who can wield the power of this sword can summon to him an army more deadly than any that walks this earth." The goosebumps this line gave me.
I like that Elrond and Aragorn have had their doubts about the world of men. Elrond himself said, "Men are weak" right before remarking in Fellowship that Aragorn had long abandoned his path to ascending to the throne of Gondor. Yet, Aragorn sees the will of men in Boromir's courageous death and ultimately in the men of Rohan, but needed this final push, facilitated by Arwen, to motivate the two men she loves the most to believe in something greater. They both needed a little kick in the back side to push them that little further. Putting that sword in Aragorn's hand is the injecting of confidence and strength he needed to take his rightful place in the world.
At 3:25 when the score starts the nostalgia hits me every time. It takes me back to 2003 and Seeing Return of the King for the first time but not only that it just reminds of that time and everything I was doing back then I get a little emotional it always amazes me how thinking about everyday things from your past can generate such strong emotions
Every time I see this scene all I get are shivers the moment Lord Elrond says, "They will answer to the KING OF GONDOR!" goodness this movie is just amazing and the trilogy at that!
Hugo Weaving is such an amazing actor...Watching the BTS, he executes his scenes to perfection every time. It's so amazing, it's like he was made to play the role of an ancient elf king, even older than Thranduil. Why do I have a thing for elves???
Daxing Li actually dude, Thranduil is older than Elrond, having been born in Doriath before its destruction, Elrond was born when they went to the havens of Sirion in the year 532 of the first age, Doriath was destroyed in the year 503 of the first age
It’s important to remember that in the book Elendil and Gil Galad actually straight up defeated Sauron while he wore the ring. It literally says they wrestled and overthrew him but died in the process. Isildur cut the ring off an already defeated Sauron it wasn’t a last second throw of the dice like in the movie. So the sword of Elendil was legit a sword that beat a ring bearing Sauron at the height of his power. And Aragorn was said to be more like Elendil than any other descendent of Elendil. So Sauron def had reason to be scared.
@James Kessler Add the double-meaning and know that when Elrond's father, Earendil, first appeared in the sky as a star with the Silmaril, the elves named the new star Gil-Estel, "Star of Hope".
Honestly, I feel that introducing Anduril near the end was better than early on in the books. I mean, the books are just fantastic, mind you. But come on. You can't deny that Jackson did manage to outdo some segments in the movie.
Not to mention that FINALLY revealing the reforging of the sword of Elendil and presenting the newly reforged Anduril to Aragorn releases ALL that buildup to what the 3rd title represents for Aragorn's story - the Return of the King.
It wouldn't had too much sense in the books, where he is determined to become a King of Gondor (and Arnor) from the very start (among many other reasons, only then he could marry Arwen) and doesn't have all those forced dillemas presented in the movies. So why the fuck would he receive the blade in the third book, he didn't deserved it when he left the Rivendell? O_o
Bear in mind that Tolkien wrote LOTR as one very large book, which was later divided into three parts by publisher. The "return of the King" takes place through all the story, but in subtler way then in the movies.
Godunow100 I actually think it's one improvement made having Aragon have about becoming king to me was more interested than in the book him already deciding that
The best part of this scene is if you know that Elrond raised Aragorn, and that the name he gave him to hide his identity as a child was "Estel", which means hope. So when he says he gives hope to men there's the triple meaning of wishing luck to men in the war against Sauron, the fact that the sword will inspire hope, and he's essentially giving his youngest son over to humanity.
Damn if only Jon had this satisfying finish to his buildup in GOT but no he has became useless. LOTR is still the king of fantasy and nothing comes close to that if it comes to complex storytelling and character development.
@@sanayakhan2042 "Subverting expectations" is often stupid because the reason there are expectations in the first place is because you've spent time laying groundwork for something to happen, only to decide at the last minute that none of it mattered and those narrative setups no longer have any narrative payoff. It's amateur-hour storytelling, so it's no wonder Dave and Dan went for it.
You missed capitalizing the first Hope as Aragorns birth name means Hope. She gave Hope(Aragorn) to the the duradain in order to give hope to mankind. That last part is such a deep dialog. Its on a whole other level. Also Aragorn lived with Elrond for his first 20 years or so until he moved out on rivendell
Elrond: “Put aside the Ranger. Become who you were born to be.” Aragorn: “Huh” Elrond: “That's it, Aragorn. Look past the flesh. Look through the soft gelatin of these dull cow eyes, and see your enemy.”

Man it's hard to believe that Viggo Mortensen is actually 2 years older than Hugo Weaving. You'd never tell by the LOTR movies. You'd think Weaving has at least 10-12 years on him.
Talha K What’s even harder to believe is that Lee Pace who played Thranduil in the Hobbit is 2 years younger than Orlando Bloom who plays his son; Legolas
I still get such goosebumps when Elrond says the line: "They will answer to the king of Gondor. Anduril, Flame of the West..." He does it with such urgency in his voice, I always start picturing up all the people of Middle-Earth and their burning pride and built-up fury, despite the sufferings and the utter doom they're facing. I can almost feel it myself! Flame of the West is truly a perfect powerful name for this blade, and Hugo is a brilliant actor!
@Ethan Schmid No it's not. In the books, Aragorn already carried Andúril when the fellowship left Rivendell. I really like how they changed it in the movies tho. Aragorn slowly changing from Strider to Isildurs heir throughout the story.
@Ethan Schmid The "reluctant hero" storytelling trope was not something that existed in medieval literature. It's a modern storytelling convention. Tolkien sought to make Aragorn a mythic and medieval hero, and using modern storytelling tropes would have absolutely killed that intention completely.
but that's what Aragorn says in the movies: "I do not want that power. I have never wanted it." Aragorn in the books knew since he became a man that he was the only one who could unite the kingdoms of Men against Mordor. It was a destiny he had been preparing a lifetime for, fighting the enemy in the service of Gondor and Rohan. Narsil was reforged and given to him when he left for the quest with the Fellowship, instead of Elrond randomly appearing and presenting it to him at the last moment.
@@vaahtobileet Exactly. The movies are excellent entertainment but many liberties were taken to make them flow on screen. One should read the books first, before seeing the movies. Form one's own mental picture of what things looked like and then compare that with Peter Jackson's realization. There's some excellent casting in these films, Ian McKellen as Gandalf in particular, and John Rnys-Davies as Gimli.
A buddy of mine has one of the actual props from the movie. It's actually incredibly uncomfortable in the hand. Those ridges dig into your palm like you wouldn't believe.
I love how hyped Elrond is at 4:06. He’s always kept his emotions in check but he pretty much tells Aragorn, “With this sword, we have a chance” as he saw what it did to Sauron 3000 years prior.
Hard disagree. It was a terrible idea that robs Aragorn of his character growth. The entire point of re-forging Narsil, and Aragorn's acceptance of it after the Council of Elrond, is his acceptance of his destiny. But, he doesn't actually accept that destiny until after Gandalf falls in Moria and he must choose between continuing the journey to Mordor with Frodo or saving Pippin and Merry. It takes two books to see that growth in Aragorn but PJ and his fellow writers decided to tie this moment to Arwen's impending death in order to make her (not Aragorn) a more relevant character. When he chooses to walk the Paths of the Dead, it is a choice that Aragorn makes but others consider unwise. That, again, shows him coming into his own as the King of the West. Again, this scene undercuts that choice because Aragorn's decision to walk that path directly springs from Elrond's advice in this scene as opposed to Aragorn looking into the palantir. Little things like this really ruined ROTK for me as the movie departed more and more from the dominant themes of the books.
@@TalisUmbras In fairness, in the books Galadriel first reminds Aragorn of the Paths of the Dead through Gandalf after his return ("but dark is the path appointed for thee/the dead watch the road that leads to the sea") and is then also counselled to take the path by Elladan and Elrohir, Elrond's sons. ('Elrohir said to him: "I bring word to you from my father: The days are short. If thou art in haste, remember the Paths of the Dead."'') So it wasn't wholly Aragorn's idea; and the sons of Elrond also brought the standard that Arwen made for him. Given the sons of Elrond were erased from the movies, I suppose Elrond himself became their substitute, but I would have preferred that Elrond was bringing him the standard, rather than the sword.
@@walover165 Yet Aragorn states quite clearly that he would have to be very desperate indeed before he would consider taking that path. It wasn't until he struggled with Sauron by way of the Palantir does he make that decision.
I love this scene. Aragorn always gave hope to other people of Middle-earth, but in that way, he also seemed lost and just never could find the hope that he should have step up to claim his right as the future King of Gondor. Now this sword, Anduril the Flame of the West and the Fellowship itself becomes his hope to save the world and himself. I personally think that Aragorn is one of the best characters in the trilogy. And Viggo Mortensen played him to perfection. :)
I like him better in the books. In the books the sword was reforged in fellowship of the ring, and Aragorn only intended to follow the fellowship till they reached Gondor.
@@lolwut112 In the books, Aragorn is a one-dimensional Mary Sue. He is so rude and he flashes his sword to the Guards of Edoras and insults them for doing their jobs. And we're supposed to think that guy is so kingly. Tolkien wrote him as such.
In my opinion, this is more impactful than Aragorn just having the sword the whole journey. It's a symbol of his character development and him embracing the call to heroism.
Elrond: "Where is Aragorn?" Soldier: "He JUST went to take a shit in the woods... borrowed my TP. Should be back in ten... maybe twelve minutes. Fourteen tops. Is that a sword you're carrying?"
This scene always gets me, when Elrond shows the sword and reminds and Aragorn fully faces his responsabilities as a king, he understands that he has no choice but to fight, yet not alone, as he is being given back the heritage of his line, the might of his ancestors running through this sword, so moving.
I love the delivery of "Ónen i-estel edain, ú-chebin estel anim" by both Elrond and Aragorn. "Ónen i-estel edain" (I gave hope to mankind) is Elrond's way of saying he trusts Aragorn with the faith of the world "ú-chebin estel anim" (I keep none for myself) is Aragorn's way of expressing humility and doubt. Combined with the fact that these were Aragorn's mothers' last words gives this scene SO MUCH meaning and depth. Absolute perfection
Howard Shore definitely earned his Oscar for Best Score. The music in this scene is epic. The entire trilogy has epic music. A well-deserved Oscar for Howard Shore
Had the opportunity to watch this at the movies during covid (local movies played the trilogy) I was amazed to know that I was not the only one that didn't saw this on cinema cause I was too young but the 4 shows during that week all full of people and best experience ever!
You can pull any scene out of this almost 11&1/2 hour trilogy and it is worthy of being posted in isolation, it’s unbelievable these films were ever made
"Put aside the ranger. Become who you were born to be." What makes this scene and quote even more awesome is the fact that Sauron later aknowledges that exactly that happened. As Gandalf said in the second movie: Sauron fears what Aragorn may become. And Elrond in this scene tells him to do the same, to put aside the ranger and become king. And when it finally happened, Sauron recognized it at the Black Gate, where he first adressed him as Agarorn, then reevaluated and adressed him as Elessar. Sauron realized that it was not merely Aragorn the Ranger anymore, but Elessar, the true King of Gondor. A worthy enemy and threat.
3:13 - love that thunder effect when he reveals it. Adds so much weight and importance to the scene. I can’t imagine these movies without Howards soundtracks. It’s just absolute perfection.

When he came to bid farewell to his mother, her last words to him were the same words they spoke now :
Onen i-estel Edain.

It always seemed kinda dumb to me that he would wander around wearing a broken sword. The movie version makes more sense.

Yeah, that poem was made by Bilbo Baggins. He rocks too.
That first line always bothers me. It should obviously be "Not all that is gold glitters" but that wouldn't fit the form of the poem.
@@jangtheconqueror It shouldn't. It means the opposite, that Aragorn is an epic bastard even if he looks like a simple ranger
@@jangtheconqueror "All that is gold does not glitter" doesn't mean "gold doesn't glitter." It means "some things that are made of gold do not glitter." None but Hugo Weaving could have done the role of Elrond such perfect justice.
Considering that Elrond's brother, Elros, was the first King of Númenor, he would remember the "days of old" a lot differently.

Can we all just take a moment and praise Howard Shore? The music in this scene is incredible stunning.
I personally think Jackson did an amazing job moving Aragorn's obtaining Anduril from the Fellowship of the Ring to Return of the King.
+Andrew Wang Yes, he did... but why was it necessary?
caderly123 because Anduril (or Narsil, rather, which was reforged into Anduril) was an heirloom from the old kings of Gondor.
Idk I liked how he fought with the shards of narsil until it got reforged.
I recently watched Lord of the Rings for the very first time, and this is probably one of the most badass and emotional fictional scenes I’ve ever witnessed. Ikr
Yep.

Hugo Weaving is such an amazing actor...Watching the BTS, he executes his scenes to perfection every time. It's so amazing, it's like he was made to play the role of an ancient elf king, even older than Thranduil.
Why do I have a thing for elves???
Daxing Li actually dude, Thranduil is older than Elrond, having been born in Doriath before its destruction, Elrond was born when they went to the havens of Sirion in the year 532 of the first age, Doriath was destroyed in the year 503 of the first age
madmeddik Well played.
I think everyone (or at least most of the people) have a thing for elves. :D
Because their cool?
Because they're beautiful, wise, loyal and fearless in another words. :)
My favorite lines are the very last two... "I give hope to Men." "I keep none for myself."
Those words were said by Gilraen, Aragorns mother, before passing away
ESTEL
What was the elfish line Elrond sad before these lines?
@James Kessler Add the double-meaning and know that when Elrond's father, Earendil, first appeared in the sky as a star with the Silmaril, the elves named the new star Gil-Estel, "Star of Hope".
Honestly, I feel that introducing Anduril near the end was better than early on in the books. I mean, the books are just fantastic, mind you. But come on. You can't deny that Jackson did manage to outdo some segments in the movie.
Exactly my thoughts :)
And those were Aragorns mother's last words to Aragorn.
@@curly6722true. That too
Damn if only Jon had this satisfying finish to his buildup in GOT but no he has became useless. LOTR is still the king of fantasy and nothing comes close to that if it comes to complex storytelling and character development.
AGREED
my thoughts too.
It's because of this new trend of "subverting expectations". They want shock value so much they lose sight of the plot.
This guy thinks LOTR has more complex plot and characters than GOT lmao.
"I give hope to Men.
I keep no hope for myself."
Aragorn's mother's last words to him before she died.
You’d never hear words like this from women these days with the rampancy of Feminism.
It’s true tho, women inspired men to fight on, it’s what Keeps is men motivated to keep pushing until the soy arrives...
You missed capitalizing the first Hope as Aragorns birth name means Hope. She gave Hope(Aragorn) to the the duradain in order to give hope to mankind. That last part is such a deep dialog. Its on a whole other level. Also Aragorn lived with Elrond for his first 20 years or so until he moved out on rivendell

how great is a movie score when even a sword gets its own incredibly epic music
Even a horse gets one as well, that's how good it is.
Well thats the thing about elves and men who have elf blood... They can hire an actor of any middle aged and call it good to be whoever ;)
Talha K maybe Viggo has good genes?😁
that s because aragorn is dunedine
Talha K what?? You fucking kiddi g me?? Well... Viggo is a dunedain
Hugo was so great as Elrond! I know some ppl thought that he was a weird choice, but I thought he was perfect
Yo, can we take a moment to appreciate King Theoden's tent. That joint is swagged out. #GoingToWarInStyle
Ya nice crib for a king on the road!
Lmao I thought so
no matter if it doesn't exist in the book, this scene is great
@Ethan Schmid No it's not.
@@brooksboy78 Almost every main character in the bible/tora is a reluctant hero. It‘s really not that modern :)
“They will answer to the KING OF GONDOR!!!” Fuck that get me everytime man and that follow up!
Well Gondor have more Muslims nw
If this was written by D&D
"Become who you were born to be"
"I dun wannet I neva have"
Hah
i c what you did there.
Nah.... The scene would cut as soon as Lord Elrond showed his face.
but that's what Aragorn says in the movies: "I do not want that power.
My my. That sword is such a beautiful elegant weapon. It's tall and fierce looking and just amazing. Every detail even down too the leather..
Moving the reforging of Andúril to Return of The King is the best book-to-movie change. This scene is so beautiful.
Jackson made many good changes to the story. In many ways the movies are superior to the books even though I love the books.
@@walover165 Yet Aragorn states quite clearly that he would have to be very desperate indeed before he would consider taking that path. It wasn't until he struggled with Sauron by way of the Palantir does he make that decision.
@@TalisUmbras ?
I will give you that. Its been a long time since I read the books so I wouldnt know but Ill agree with you there.
I like the novels and the movies equally
@@lolwut112 In the books, Aragorn is a one-dimensional Mary Sue. He is so rude and he flashes his sword to the Guards of Edoras and insults them for doing their jobs. And we're supposed to think that guy is so kingly. Tolkien wrote him as such.
@@tiaaaron3278 Gary Stue, You obviously haven't read the books.

That cape flip when he pulls out the sword. Fabulous.
How fitting that Elrond, the brother of Elros (the First King and founder of Numenor) and ancestor to Aragorn, offers him the sword of Elendil.
Aragorn is the closest person that Elrond remind him of Elros, his brother.
In my opinion, this is more impactful than Aragorn just having the sword the whole journey. It's a symbol of his character development and him embracing the call to heroism.

I love the delivery of "Ónen i-estel edain, ú-chebin estel anim" by both Elrond and Aragorn.
"Ónen i-estel edain" (I gave hope to mankind) is Elrond's way of saying he trusts Aragorn with the faith of the world
"ú-chebin estel anim" (I keep none for myself) is Aragorn's way of expressing humility and doubt.
Combined with the fact that these were Aragorn's mothers' last words gives this scene SO MUCH meaning and depth. Absolute perfection

Become who you were born to be."
What makes this scene and quote even more awesome is the fact that Sauron later aknowledges that exactly that happened.
The way they set up this scene, u feel the weight of history in the sword. Absolutely masterful storytelling
Am I the only one who thought Aragorn wasn’t going to have enough room to draw the sword?
Nope I too thought the sword looked too big for him! XD
But to be fair; the High King Elendil, it's original owner, was said to be about 7'11.
