How to Play Cardfight Vanguard Overdress - A Player's Tutorial for the D Standard Format

  • Hi, hi. In this video, I try to explain the mechanics of a game I greatly enjoy, Cardfight Vanguard, while walking through a simple game. It's a really complex card game, with a lot of mechanics that even veteran card players may find challenging, so there's a lot of explanation and such which leads the video to be a half hour long even though a lot of matches with experienced players can be finished in around ten minutes. There is an official tutorial video here • [Master the basics in ... but frankly, I don't think it's very good. It rushes through a lot of mechanics and doesn't really show what a turn looks like in detail. I try to rectify that here by playing out a full game, with two players interacting with each other, gradually adding card effects and mechanics as I go. Of course, if there's anything you don't understand, or if you think I could've explained something better, please say so in the comments. I might even make another video entirely, as a replacement or addendum to this one. Thanks and stuff.

    Thank you so much for making a video such as this to point new players towards. It's the first steps of learning Vanguard that are the hardest, and having an actual fight that tutorials you as you go through it is the perfect learning experience!

      Is there anything that confused you here, or anything that you've noticed about the card game outside of this video, that you think I should touch upon? And do you want some server invites?

      @@MikeTheEntei Oh I have been playing since the V Mordred set. I just wanted to congratulate you because, while teaching new peeps about Vanguard, I came across your video to point them to when they or I didn't have time to run a demo game on CFA
      It's been helpful thrice already and I appreciate your effort ^^
      Something worth adding would be an explanation of the different ability types (ACT, AUTO and CONT). It's one of two things the Bushiroad tutorial video doesn't touch on (the other being "You can only play 1 Order per turn").
      Also something else i have seen players struggle with is the symbols (especially CB,CC,SB and SC) but I think learning those becomes instinctive after running 2-3 games

      @@iSearchTH-cam Ahaha, well thank you, from one experienced player to another. I'll certainly keep those topics in mind--I know I went over soul and counter here but I kinda just glossed over them without really stating their importance to the game. Didn't really go over the difference between the three types of skills at all, and I never played a single order here which bugs me a lot >.>

    Great tutorial man but I have one doubt that if by chance over trigger came in draw phase instead of trigger phase then what are we supposed to do??

    • @MikeTheEntei
      @MikeTheEntei  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The Over Trigger, like any other Trigger Unit, only activates its trigger effects when drive/damage checked. If you draw it or add it to your hand by any other card's effect, it will stay in your hand. Most OTs have 50,000 shield, which means they're useful for blocking almost any attack, so keep it in your hand until you need to guard with it.

    May i know how to use order cards like for example, brandt gate order. Where should i put the card?

    • @MikeTheEntei
      @MikeTheEntei  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Yeah, I totally missed those. There are three types of orders. Normal Orders, Blitz Orders, and Set Orders. Strictly speaking, all orders go into the "order area" when played, but this has almost no effect on gameplay. What you're probably thinking of is the Order Zone, which is where Set Orders go.
      If you've ever played Pokemon or Yugioh, they're a bit like Stadiums or Field Spells, except you can have as many set orders in the Order Zone as you want. Some decks only use one, like Prison, while others make use of many different ones, like Orfist or Edelgrema.
      Normal Orders and Blitz orders go into the drop zone [discard pile] after they're used.
      Keep in mind, you can only play one order per turn under normal circumstances. You can't even play a Normal Order and a Set Order in the same turn! There are plenty of cards which bend these rules, though. Anything which puts a Set Order directly into the Order Zone, for instance, does NOT count towards the one-order-play-per-turn rule.
      Sorry if this is a lot to take in. I hope I answered your question well.

    Vairina's skill:
    Which soul is it referring to? Is it referring to the vanguard's soul or is it referring to the trickstar soul?

    • @MikeTheEntei
      @MikeTheEntei  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      "Soul" always refers to the cards beneath your Vanguard. This includes anything you ride upon [such as Rino and Reiyu] and anything you soul-charge or put into soul through other means. Whenever any card asks to soul-blast, you choose whichever cards you want from your Vanguard's soul. Sometimes, this decision matters a lot, but usually not in Nirvana decks.
      The cards beneath Vairina are called "originalDress" which is a mechanic that's pretty much exclusive to the Nirvana decks. If a card like Vairina is sent to the drop zone, deck, bind zone, Prison, etc., any cards beneath it will follow.
      I hope I've been able to help. Please, feel free to ask if you have any further questions. Vanguard is an exceedingly complicated game to learn.

      @@MikeTheEntei is persona ride just like cross ride or no?

      P.s. sorry for asking so many questions, i haven't played vanguard since the original series

    • @MikeTheEntei
      @MikeTheEntei  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No worries. Frankly, the last few sets in D have made it SUPER complicated.
      Persona Ride is a mechanic which happens when you ride the same card over itself during the Ride Phase. ....but there are a lot of new cards which persona-ride over each other, such as the set 5 Thegrea cards and the Lyrical Melody vanguards and their Festival 2023 versions.
      I'm rather inexperienced with old Vanguard, but...well, Dragonic Overlord the End and Phantom Blaster Overlord actually exist :P However, you don't need to ride them over Overlord and PBD, since there are support cards which aim to put them into the soul, so you can use The End and PBO to their fullest on turn 3.
      And then there are cards which effectively ARE cross-rides, to my understanding. In an upcoming set, Clash of the Heroes, there are some new vanguards which are meant to be ridden over some old ones [Rorowa, Thegrea, Tamayura, Kheios, and Eva]. Each of them basically says "When you ride me over my previous version, do cool stuff and activate Persona Ride." To add to the complexity of it all, these new cards will also re-ride the original version at the end of your turn, forcing you to crossride again next turn.
      Then, there are some Shaman King cards [an anime tie-in, similar to Touken Ranbu] which say "This card can only be ridden from a Grade 3 with XXX in its card name", basically making them equivalent to cross-rides. For instance, there's a Yoh Asakura that comes in the trial deck, and then a "better" one from the booster packs with this restriction. You won't get a persona Ride bonus when riding the pack one from the theme deck one, but you will get to Persona Ride if you ride the pack one over itself.
      And then there are the Grade 4 Vanguards. These are not cross-rides, and they don't even have the Persona Ride icon, so you won't get to PR when riding one copy on top of another, but they often rely on having the previous form in the soul. For instance, Mahar Nirvana, Dragon Empire's G4, can soul-blast the original grade 3 Nirvana for its cost. You cannot have Grade 4s in your Ride Deck--you have to ride them from hand on your fourth turn. [Unless you have Blaze Maiden, Amelia owo]

    I'm just getting into Vanguard and I have a couple of Starter Decks, but I need playmats for 2 players, and a rulebook--what's the cheapest thing I can buy to get these?

    • @MikeTheEntei
      @MikeTheEntei  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      All the starter decks sbould come with paper playmats if you're okay using those to start. But, I'd recommend getting rubber/cloth ones. Depending on the art, you can get some for $10 or even lower at TCGPlayer or 50cards, or at whatever store you play Vanguard at (assuming you're near one). There is an online rulebook on the vanguard website but it is very complex. Personally, I'd recommend going on to the subreddit discord server to ask questions. Honestly, I'm not even the most seasoned player around; I'm just one of the few with a youtube channel, and I find it more fulfilling to make videos covering the basics of games like these. Of course, I have my own server [there's an invite in the description but I'll post the link here for convenience] discord.com/invite/nV7KFZbKbN if you feel like talking about Vanguard there. My server is more general than just this card game though 83

      @@MikeTheEntei Thank you very much. Paper mats would be great, but the newer Start Decks (like Tomari Seto) don't include mats or rules, as they wanted to keep costs down. I don't understand the game well enough to know if mats and rules from older deck sets (like the Marine Emperor) are appropriate for the newer Start Decks I have.
