Wow. I was a Jason Isbell fan...but this show was magic. Sat here all by myself, just me and a cold beer...and cried over “Elephant”. Best touring band anywhere right now. Good, honest playing. Thank you, Mr. Isbell.
Found him via White Man's World. Someone said honesty, and amen to that. THANK YOU Amanda when he told her 8+ years ago "I think I'm drinking too much" & she said "If you still feel that way in 24 hours let's get you some help." That's the story I heard, from the man himself I think. He could so easily be dead and instead he's writing these songs and on Twitter he'll congratulate anyone who says they're clean 24 hours or 6 months or 15 years. See you in Detroit Monday night Jason and all these fine musicians. You make the world bearable. Even peaceful. I don't deserve it, probably, to even be in your presence. Sorry for rambling.
Megan Hughes I've heard him tell it a lot of times in interviews with a few minor variations but one thing is constant, it's a beautiful story. Every time. Thank God she saved him and he was willing to be saved. On a little different (and less important) note though, she leaves a massive hole in the band's sound when she's not there. They're AMAZING but it's not quite the same without her.
superman1148 Thank you, I heard an interview with her on Sound Opinions about a year ago and she just sounded so natural and ... she’s got to be tough as nails but she’s vulnerable too (this was before she started SINGING!!). It sounds like she didn’t push him to get sober but knew what to do when he was ready, and I told my husband today that what I love about Jason Isbell is how TOTALLY obvious it is how much he loves her. I hope she’s in Detroit on Monday night but I kinda doubt it; yes what an amazing talent she is!
Megan Hughes I could be reading your comment wrong (I'm bad at the internet) but just in case I'm not I wanted to let you know that Amanda has been singing since before they met and she's got some great stuff available. Look up her Austin City Limits performance of "Wasted and Rolling," if you haven't seen it. Find the one where she tells a long story before she sings. She talks about their early days together and then he plays guitar as her sideman for a change. The story is hilarious and the song is incredible.
@@superman1148 I totally get you I know Amanda Shire had her own career for a long time and didn't drink or drug thru it@ ! She's a huge talent and I think saves him from himself at times kinda like Lois did repeatedly for Bill you know? So glad and grateful to all for getting sober and showing me the way thank you God..... back to the concert in Detroit!!
What truly amazes me is how many great songs he had to leave off the set list like, Traveling Alone, Dress Blues, Cumberland Gap, Danko/Manuel, Speed Trap Town, Decoration Day, Children of Children, Goddamn Lonely Love, Songs That She Sang in the Shower, I could keep going!!
Haha I tried to make a concise playlist of Jason's songs for a friend to introduce her. Took me days because there were so many great songs to choose from. Also pretty tricky to decide what to play after "Vampires" and Elephant, because there should always be a silent minute to weep and think
Sadler and Jason have really built themselves into a "natural sounding" harmony team. Beyond notes, that's something you only develop with time and a personal bond.
If the Army hadn't sent me to Texas for school I would have been there! Jason Isbell is my favorite band, and have followed him all the way from his days with drive by truckers. Maybe next time #jasonisbell
Jason and the 400 Unit are fantastic live. I'm no expert but it seems that Chad Gamble has an incredible knack for being in the "just right"zone in all his drumming.
He is scary good. The lyrics are are on another level. He still captivates a listening crowd. I have been a Drive By Truckers fan since day 1. But it was clear Isbell was the most gifted. Hood and Cooley are sensational. But Jason is on a Bob Dylan level...(with a better voice)
Caleb Hartley it always blows my mind when people say that. He was honestly my least favorite of the Truckers as far as singing and writing. I didn't see his talent truly shine until Sirens of the Ditch. I listen to his DBT stuff more now than I did when he was in the band lol. Funny how he just took over in waves, ya know? With Southeastern being the biggest, I guess. What a talent.
When people ask me what Isbell sound like, I tell them he is what you would get if you combined Bob Dylan, Tom Petty, and Willie Nelson into one musician. I've been a life long Petty fan and since his passing, Jason has picked up the torch for me. I can't get enough of his music.
Jon Witkop that's awesome. I was a fan of Isbell before Tom Petty. I mean, I knew some of those great songs, but I had just fallen in love with the Heartbreakers on a complete level shortly before Tom died. So I've gone back and forth between the two of them ever since, digging deeper and deeper into both. Neither one has stopped amazing me yet.
Jeff Storey definitely hit or miss, but there are some absolute gems from that era that he ignores nowadays. I can't imagine writing anything as good as 'In A Razor Town.' It's a perfect song. It was nice to hear 'Alabama Pines' in this one at least.
Drove five hours from Iowa to see this show! Jason Isbell was incredible and Father John Misty did not disappoint either! Hands down this was best show that I’ve seen in a long time. The drive was well worth it.
Just stumbled across him yesterday and it was an immediate life upgrade with the added bennie of lifting my own creative juices too. Love when that kind of thing happens.
First time I saw the 400 unit play was in Milwaukee Wi at Shank Hall in spring 2008. There weren't more than 30 people there. So glad he's getting the audiences and accolades he deserves
Can't wait to see him at Red Rocks in September. Amazing songwriter and just as good a human being. Love seeing him and Amanda together. Check out their tiny Desk show! I "discovered" Jason myself when someone turned me on to Decoration Day in 2003 when he was with the Truckers. 2 songs absolutely blew me away only to find out he wrote both (Decoration Day and Outfit) and I've follow him and the Truckers ever since.
Hearing his cover of Oh Well may have just sold me on going to the show in Omaha in August. I have tickets for the Sioux Falls show, but that one is an acoustic show with just Jason.
isbell is obviously incredible... but this just goes to show what having a killer band does to elevate someone to super stardom. adding sadler was the master stroke and i’ll be gat damed if Jimbo ain’t the best bass in americana.

I love Jason Isbell and was able to see him in San Diego just recently. Hes amazing, but I have to say I was a little disappointed that his wife Amanda Shires didnt accompany him on stage. Her violin, her harmony and their chemistry is just beyond words. Amanda your tribute very missed
I was there. This show was phenomenal! The mix on this video is way too vocal forward. It doesn't capture the greatness of the 400 Unit as they were rocking that night! Still, love that I can relive it to some degree. Thanks!
I am still trying to figure out how a guy as relatively young as Jason can write a song like "If We Were Vampires." It sounds like he already has the perspective of someone in his 70's or 80's. I guess he earned it with a lot of "hard living" before he decided to live his current lifestyle.
Unpopular opinion maybe, but I like it sometimes when it’s just the boys. It’s a different sound to me, plus means she’s probably out doing her own thing too-
Amazing! Saw him at Marymoor Park. JUST three more songs would have made it a top 5 lifetime concert ( Outfit, Tupelo, and Goddamn Lonely Love). Still top 10! Only difference setlist wise was that he played Never Gonna Change and a new song, Overseas. He didn't play Anxiety or Outfit.
OMG WHO IS THAT ON ELECTRIC GUITAR?? Just hearing Last of My Kind. Looks 17 years old plays like he's lived 100 years of soul. Great concert THANK YOU for this!!!

I reckon Cumberland Gap to kick start the concert would make the setlist absolutely flawless. I hope I can see them live someday, I just love Isbell's music and lyrics.
I have to laugh at the folks who say that there isn't any good music these days, nuthin' like the old stuff and nobody writes good songs anymore. They haven't listened to Jason Isbell. They need to start listening to something other than classic rock radio. Its sad that you don't hear TTB, Widedspread Panic, Amanda Shires, Jillian Welch and the like on the Radio. They don't fit into an existing "genre", how about one that is labeled "Good".
