      Yes, it was laborious to say the least. Spent literally weeks sanding and removing paint. It stung a bit when I realised I still had proper stripper on the garage shelf from when I had refurbed a set of car wheels. My tip is to find out the main ingredient in old school paint stripper and order direct from a chemical company. You might pay more in postage (hazardous chemical transport) than for the actual stripper but it will save you days and days of sanding!

      Alloy wheel refurbishment companies use high strength paint stripper or sand blasting to remove all the paint. 👍

      I've fairly recently done an oldschool BMX respray, without the right power tools, I know now that its best to;
      1. while your still keen, work on the intricate parts like all the brazing, welds and lugs.
      2. give the entire frame a sand to at least compromise the lacquer finish.
      3. then, especially if it looks like too much work to sand, you can apply paint stripper.
      But don't leave the stripper on for hours, I'm certain the directions advise against that. The blistered paint is removed best if you catch it while its still pliable.
      P.S
      Pitted chrome components come up nice after a dip in an oxalic acid solution.

      Yes , and it took forever but the finish was very rewarding . The only problem is preventing the aluminium oxidation and now after 2 years it looks
      like something from the Mad Max movie

      I don’t know if it’s available in the UK, but I used ”Troton remover” multiple times with great succes. You just spray the surface and the paint basicaly fals off on it’s own. It’s quite cheap but sometimes you do need 2 cans.

      Martin has mentioned many times that a full paint job (simple of one obviously) would take a DIYer a good week or so.
      This whole notion of wanting something to be done fast is really not very conducive to a job well-done on a DIY project.

    I sanded down an old dirt jump frame by hand and couldn't manage to sand around all the cable mounts and welds so finished it off with paint stripped worked like a dream. I ended up putting a few layers of clear coat over it but now it has started to have some surface rust come through. Its been turned into a ski bike now. Good to know the nukeproofs have good paint as I own two.

  • @EQINOX187

    When it comes to stripping the paint back to the metal it is best to avoid sand paper or orbital sanders, there is actually specifically designed paint stripper discs that you can get for grinders / drills and dremal's, they are like loose fiber pads like scouring pads only harder, but they pull the paint off in seconds but do not damage the metal if it is steel, alloy frames will get some marks but no where near as bad as sand paper marks

    OMG! I’m SO glad I found this video! I’ve watched untold restoration videos where they slap on Nitromors, the paint bubbles up, and then virtually wipes off. THIS VIDEO is what really happens! I’m trying my first BMX restoration so everything I do, I’m doing for the first time, so assume I’m doing everything wrong when it doesn’t do what I expect (add citric baths for rust removal to this…works fine…but rust comes back when warmed up).
    Yes I know getting it blasted would be quicker, better and inexpensive, but it defeats the concept of being able to do the restoration at home yourself…which is kind of what this is all about. End of the day you may as well just send it off to get it resprayed entirely if you’re just want to get the job done. Outsourcing any part of the process seems to defeat the point.
    (I say this as someone who’s been wrestling with this recently. When I have the space I’ll buy the sandblasting kit myself. It doesn’t seem that expensive. £150 I think should set me up with a cheap box, gun, air).
    Anyway, this is exactly what happened to me. And I’ll be taking the sander and dremel to it shortly. And look forward to not having to deal with the nasty paint stripping gloop again!
    Thank you! 🙏

    Yeah.. i did the same thing this winter.
    What i learned was that this paint-stripper don't work well on 2k paint.
    I ended up applying LIBERAL amounts of it all over the frame, wrapping the entire frame in clingfilm, then let it sit for several days.
    Then i took the frame into the shower where i treated it to the hottest water i had while scraping the paint off with a sharp blade.
    Then it was just a matter of scuffing the surface to remove any grooves and marks before i did a coat of etch primer and then a lick of 2k industrial paint.
    The bike looks amazing now, but man, i spent weeks trying different ways to remove the paint.

    As most bike manufactures are now powder coating frames, you'll need something a little stronger than regular paint stripper something more like Benco B17 which is more industrial and then use a poli surface prep wheels to get the remaining bits of flakes off with out damaging the frame.. then de grease the frame then polish.

    For the scratches, go into a Halfords branch, and get a spray product called Flatner. This is a thick spray that you spray the whole frame with. Then, use wet and dry paper to rub it down. This will get rid of all marks on the frame. Then you simply spray your paint over that. It gives the hot rod finish. It's worth doing.
    Also, 2 coats of clear at the end!

    Your painstaking and seemingly never ending efforts at sanding, were an immediate reminder, of my having been through that particular 'mill'; and what it suggests for you and anyone who has persevered is 'framous' status. Whew !

    I stripped down my commuter bike 35 odd years ago and the Nitromores I used then is nothing like the weedy excuse for paintstripper they sell today!
    It took all the paint off without a problem except I didnt rinse it down very well and the new paint took an age to harden properly! (I was young!)
    Most things that were very good for the task of preparing surfaces for paint cannot be used today because of those silly government regulations prohibiting the use of caustic, acidic or carcinogenic substanses which work wonderfully but are not so good for the envionment, (or your skin/general health!) so we have to either be licenced to use such things or put up with inefective "paintstrippers" which can't dissolve sugar let alone a good paint!
    If you're lucky enough to have, or have access to, a bead/sand blasting cabinet, thats the best thing to get all the paint off even in those rippely welds and other awkward areas that are such a pain!
    For producing a polished finish use emery or wet'n'dry paper and keep it wet! Yes, it can be messy but the paper will last longer and you'll get better results. After the paint is off start with 400, then 800 and progress up to a 2000 or even 3000 grade of paper before trying to polish. Then use a rotary buff or mop with a metal polish on a power drill for the large areas and finish off the awkward spots with the dremmel. Always use eye protection when doing this!
    Results will vary depending on the alloy used in the frame but overall results should be good. Finally, finish off with a good coat of laquer to preserve your hard work!

    • @MrJonas2255
      @MrJonas2255 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Wouldn't the laquer have trouble sticking to the smooth polished surface? Usually when you spray something you want to rough up the surface slightly to allow for proper adhesion.

    • @roythearcher
      @roythearcher 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@MrJonas2255 I used to work in a polishing shop and to preserve the polished finish we always laquered the door furniture ( and other items exposed to the elements) to stop tarnish and corrosion. When these came back as repeat customers, the first job was always to strip the old laquer off. so I guess it sticks pretty well!....
      Besides why would you rough up a polished surface if you just spent many hours polishing it???

    I use a paint stripping company that uses walnut shell blasting to remove paint from aluminium and can be glass bead blasted after walnut shells to get an even finish. Can't use glass beads at first as that would leave the metal surface too uneven, Takes a few minutes to do, just need the right machine!! They also do sand blasting for steel frames. We only sand Carbon fiber frames.

    I was about to embark on a similar journey last year, and I'm glad I did not. instead, I asked a local frame builder if he knew anyone who could do it professionally: it took a few bucks (like 15€) and a few days to have a steel frame perfectly sandblasted (I think they actually used tiny glass beads). I then brought it to an industrial paint shop where they powdercoated it.
    If you want a gloss finish, then you begin the sanding down and polishing process, otherwise you leave it like that: the sandblasted finish is really interesting! I think I'll do it, sooner or later, to my current aluminium hardtail. And I'd mask the "decals" and polish them shiny, I think that would make for an interesting look!

    In Canada we have “Circa 1850” stripper which is creepy good. You dab it on and it bubbles up in the same pattern you dabbed it on three minutes later. I did this to a Brodie Bigshot back in the day and used a Dremel brass brush on the welds. NOTE- it is SUPER toxic! Get a whiff and you’ll know immediately. AND- don’t do the brass brush Dremeling inside, I was catching 1cm bristles in my feet for a year after. The frame looked great after.

    Mothers works great BUT it really pulls the 'dirt' off of the metal, leaving the black residue you see. Best to use many throw away rags or paper towels for the first few passes until a shine starts to develop. Otherwise you'll go through a lot of polishing wheels.

    angle grinder with a prep wheel would be my choice of weapon, it'd actually be able to deal with those weld beads with some effort. If you really want to go full manual labour then steel wool after the sanding. Or take the advice of some other comments and pay for a material blaster. This is a case where having the right tools for the job saves a lot of time and gives a better result.
