Thanks! I basically built the root cellar under a shed, something almost all homeowners have in their backyards, in my humble opinion everyone should have a space for long term food storage.
Thank you for this amazing tour. You are so resourceful. I like how you increased the R value. I love the water buckets as a heat source. How cool is that!
That's awesome. I had been looking for a good example of a cold weather green house to try my hand at hydroponic gardening and wasn't sure how sustainable it would be in a greenhouse but that's inspiring. I also loved the extended eve to block the summer sun. We actually did the same without house when we built it; south facing with large windows to let the winter sun in but a covered veranda to block the sun during the summer months.
You totally get what I am talking about , and you have a home to prove it! Awesome ! This greenhouse is built small like a shed, lots of homes have sheds, so hopefully a few people will convert them into a greenhouse or at least see that is is possible.
Thanks ! and there are new upgrades to come this year , we are planing to install some water ballast in the greenhouse to run it all year long, even at - 40, again completely sun powered!
@@solarbrianyvonne Where are you located? I live in San Francisco but I'm consulting with some people who have a barn in Deposit, NY. I may want to put them in touch with you. Thanks.
Thanks ! and very handy because you grow upstairs and harvest and stow them away downstairs seemingly all in one motion. We also store the garden down there in the fall.
Hi Joan The automatic dampers can be a little tricky to find but most hardware stores or building supply stores should be able to order some for you, failing that I just found a couple on amazon you can order , there is 24voltAC model or 120 volt AC model, you will have to choose which one you want and how you want to connect them. I purchased the 24volt AC ones then connected them to a temperature sensor to open and close automatically. Search for HMI Hoyme Manufacturing Inc. Universal Motorized Fresh Air Damper (Power Open) - 6 .... or ....... Suncourt ZC206 ZoneMaster Motorized Airflow Control Damper, Open (or Close depending), 6" .....both are good units , just make sure whatever you order the damper has a built in (on the inside) gasket seal, to prevent air leaks. Humidity is an ongoing battle but I have also installed vents to the outside that we can open manually if it starts to get a little too humid . thanks for stopping by
What a great idea to put your root cellar under the greenhouse...

Wow! That is really cool. Root cellar, the whole 9 yards 👍

water is a great medium for storing heat, it has about 5 x the potential storage compared to rocks and dirt.

Fabulous greenhouse! Where did you get those automatic dampers? Any humidity issues?
