      That depends. Some sprints are around for a while. The S35VN Para 3 and PM2 were a sprint and were available for a long time. Same with the M390 Manix 2. I do hate the flash sprints though.

    Curious. KnifeSteelNerds did extremely thorough testing on S45VN...”S45VN is somewhat of an incremental advance but it does seem to be an upgrade overall vs the earlier S30-series steels. I also think that S45VN is an upgrade over Elmax as it has similar edge retention but somewhat better potential hardness, corrosion resistance, toughness, and a finer carbide structure.”
    For the sprint, it’s genius for Spyderco but frustrating to purchase.

    Technically, once you switch the scales, it won’t be a sprint run anymore. White Mountain Knives has a PM2 in S45VN with black G10 with this same texture. And I think it’s just a regular production knife. They’re not in stock yet though.

    • @SharpenedBlade0
      @SharpenedBlade0 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Stephen Barone that would make sense, although it looks black on my screen. But every phone has different resolutions so maybe that’s all it is.
      Edit: yeah it was just my phone lol I looked at other websites and they all look “black” too. I don’t have a computer so I had nothing to compare it to.

    Haha. I’ve already put my diamond arc scales on another knife! I never ever sell scales. I also found that if I sell a hot sprint/exclusive, they sell waaaaayyyy faster if you price them fairly. Instead of price gouging. Flippers may eventually make a big sale, but I’d rather have a quick sale.

    When I've had the opportunity to buy a sprint run or a hard to get knife (Pena X Series Front Flipper Trapper) if I decide to sell it, Ill post it on eBay with a starting price of .99 and let the market determine the price. Works in my favor most of the time, and I don't feel like a creep putting a buy it now price of $500 on a $200 knife.

    I didn't realize you sold the Void, what made you think of selling it? Just out of curiosity, what does a void go for in the secondary market anyways? I'm excited to see s45vn hitting the mainstream. I think with its ability to reach higher hardness, it will perform better as an edc steel.

  • @Satyaswaroopan

    I do agree that it would be more beneficial if Spyderco released semi production runs instead of very limited amounts. They say that the purpose of sprint runs is to test out new steels, but if most people are safe keeping them and reselling them, then what's the point? If more people had their hands on them and actually used them, Spyderco would have more feedback on the product. I managed to get a Native 5 in REX 45 and was considering selling it but I'm really happy that I decided to keep it because now I actually get to use and enjoy it!

    Was thinking about buying it (can't carry it anyway, so why not get one that has more collector value and differs from the standard version), but I doubt it'll even become available for a sensible price. the US price of $157 is cheaper than what a regular PM2 goes for here in Europe.

    • @MDM1992
      @MDM1992 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm from the UK and ordered my purple g10 and dlc coated cru wear dlt trading exclusive from the US for 180 dollars, had to pay tax when it got here but still didn't end up any more expensive than the cheapest paramilitary 2 I could find anywhere local, some local websites were charging far more even after the tax for much lower models which weren't exclusive rarer models with much worse steel than cruwear so I don't regret it at all.

    This is the first sprint run that I’ve gotten in on. I hate the secondary market markups and gouging.
    I have to admit I was wondering if you were going to sell those scales, I wouldn’t have thought it rude to inquire... but I would have asked if you were interested in selling them not “how much for them?” Or “give me those stock scales!”. But I could see how annoying that could get.

    I find myself not chasing sprint runs once I have one of the model. Like I have one Para 3, don’t really want another unless it’s something crazy (usually mods or great steel). Another example is I have an m390 PM2 and a modded s30v one. Probably letting the m390 one go.

  • @E.L.RipleyAtNostromo
    @E.L.RipleyAtNostromo 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    What's also irritating is that some of the knife sites allow two knives to be purchased on the sprints. All that does is encourage price gouging on the secondary market as people keep one and jack up the price on the other. The sprints I've sold get $25 added to them, and $5 of that is for shipping. On some models I will try and snag one, and have a half-dozen nice ones, but I also carry all my knives as regular EDC users. The one that really got me was the CF Shaman in S90V, which I preordered and paid for, and then was told after the fact by Knifecenter that they weren't available. I agree on that limited production concept, and wish Spyderco would do that, like they did with the PM2's in S35VN. They would actually end up making way more money in the long run.

  • @jeffreymliss

    Supply and demand determine what a knife costs. Free market. I understand the frustration of not getting one when they are released and the mild anger of having to pay more, but that's what it is in all collecting hobbies. Me? I don't buy em so I never feel the pain of missing out.

    I carry and use my PM2 S45VN. If this knife is any good, I am sure it will be common. I have a few sprint runs, but I don’t treat them like investments. I also have people try to buy things I don’t have for sale, like cars. I don’t even care what they might offer. I am more likely to gift things rather than sell them.

    There is reason I like sprint runs, specifically from Spyderco. And I am not disagreeing with you or Nick or anybody who disapproves of the false scarcity created by sprint runs. Especially knowing that if Spyderco quadruples its production, they would still sell out I hours. But I can't help but notice how expensive regular production Spydercos are. And their sprint runs and exclusives seem to often be a much higher value. Case in point, last year I got the Smock for $175. This year I got the Smock in 20CV for $175.

    I do consider myself a part time knife collector and to your point when I buy sprints and or even one offs I don't use them. Not sure I see the issue of buying knifes that will appreciate in value over time. Have we not been doing that with coins, stamps, comics, paintings, cars, even some firearms. I do think some companies over use the sprint run sales gimmick way too much.....looking at you ZT and Spyderco. I will say this. One reason I really appreciate your site, maybe more then any other, is that fact you don't show knives that no one can get. I have no use to see something to get all excited about only to know I will never have access to buy it. I could be wrong on this point

  • @mickkeim4142
    @mickkeim4142 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Come on Bryan...tell us about your new scales...lol. I have to agree with you on the flipping sprint runs. It’s like everything since day one...if there is someone willing to pay for it then there will be someone out there who will take advantage of the situation. So I’m really happy to hear that you have drawn a line in the sand...and like you suggest, it’s not illegal, or you could certainly debate wether it is the wrong thing to do and those who do it will defend it as good business and that somehow if they were smart enough to get in on the sprint run at a fair price, then they DESERVE getting everything they can out of the knife. If you ask me, it’s kind of sleazy. But here is the thing...since your line is drawn in the sand, sometimes that line can become blurred or blown by the winds. These folks are not bad people, they just may have lost site of that line in the sand and end up on the wrong side...
    Hahah...I guess that is my rant for what it’s worth.

    I would have a hard time swapping out the scales on that one! Green definitely isn't my color either, but that's a good looking folder.
    I get why manufacturer does the sprint runs.. definitely creates sales. However, I am with you.. Hate the gouging on the secondary market. For me, I'd buy it because I love the uniqueness factor.. Guess I'm not willing to pay to play though either.
    Though.. If you don't own just one or two knives.. You're a collector lol
    I buy knives not for their resale value.. But their value to me.. Something about a new knife makes me happy 😃 same as the little pocket folder our granddad's kept in their pocket.. It was enough to handle day to day tasks.. They didn't need fancy steels and a thousand configurations on the handle.. It just worked. So if you own one or two your the average Joe.. If you're like me.. They just put a smile on your face so you buy more than you ever really could ever need or use.

    Then the dilemma of not using it for fear of reducing the value. I had a a few sprint runs plus some collectible knives that were stolen in a house theft. I was upset they were gone but also I never got to enjoy using them. I vowed never to buy a knife and not enjoy carrying and cutting with it. If you into collecting and flipping that’s ok but for me I’d rather enjoy what I bought.

    I know I’m late to the comment section, but I totally understand where you are coming from. However I’m one of those people who uses things with no regard for resale. If I buy something I’m using it regardless if it’s 1/1,000,000 or 1/1 and it’s getting covered in grease, dirt, oil, etc.

    Love yer channel, disagree with ya on this one. I’m 7 minutes in and all your critiques thus far either have to do with high demand for sprint runs (which...making an extra-special version of a standard knife is exactly the point of a sprint run so I don’t really see the point in complaining when people get excited about ‘em), or have more to do with being a “public figure” in the knife community than anything having to do with sprint runs specifically.

      Sprint runs have become a double edged sword. On the one hand you have a collector looking for that different delica to add to the 10 other delicas he has. Then we have the flippers. Just buying as many as he can hoping to make a profit on the resale. No interest in collecting.

      @@ratride1 I love the hobby and flip knives myself at times when I can't afford to buy other more expensive knives I'd otherwise not be able to afford.way I see it if I was looking for a limited edition knife I really wanted I'd have to pay an asshole tax on it myself sucks has to be that way but is what it is.i do give friends and family deals on knives though.

    Dude, dye those amazing scales and make the knife yours... they're too good, I can't put mine down... i have more than a few sprints because I love the idea of different steels with the same geometry (para3 is my preference) I profile them immediately, kills the urge to resale immediately.

    Sweet! I’vd been interested in s45 blade steel, share your thoughts how it compares when yiu showcase the new scales! Wondering if it’s a noticeable difference for the better.
    As much as I enjoy Purple I also have love for the color Green. I now know you’re a Green hater, though your enological hatred doesn’t affect my excited interest in your content. 🤘🏻

    IMO it is a good thing if people offer to buy scales or knives when you show them. It shows that many like and want them. I wouldn't consider that a "bad" thing.
    I know it can get majorly annoying but it should be expected. Maybe just post "not for sale" on the vids/posts and most will leave you alone. Maybe? LOL

    I get annoyed about sprint runs because they usually drop in the middle of the day while I'm at work. I can't sit and hit refresh or time it. I like Spyderco knives but hate their obsession with doing that.
    One other thing. You can sell your knives to whomever you want and you owe no one an explanation. Don't feed the whiners by trying.
    Great job and congrats on the KI gig. I think I forgot to say that on that video.

    I wish companies wouldn't do limited runs of knife designs, blade steels, or blade shapes. Special edition handle color? Fine. "2020 quarantine package opener 1 of 500"? Sure. Just not things that are particularly desirable for USE, but too valuable to use because there won't be any more.

    I don't even bother with sprint runs, they drop when I'm working and gone in minutes. And spyderco always seems to do colors that I would have to change. I'm like old Slicey, black handle silver blade lol

    I relate with the rant, when I list a knife for "sale" on Blade Forums someone always asks if I'm interested in a trade. Most listings for sale will state "for sale only" or "no trades". As well there is a trading forum. Those people annoy me. Not a fan of the green.

    $150+ for basic scales and then to make it cooler or unique, you’ve got to spend over $80 scales from somewhere else. I just don’t get it. It’s an old model that looks the same with every iteration.
    I’m sure it’ll look sweet afterwards and then I’ll reconsider buying a Spyderco 😂
