That 4.3 was only rated at 190 Horsepower from the factory. So he shouldn't have been dissapointed.

Yeah that's true, 190 is the rating. I was going to guess about 170 at the rear wheel but his did a little better than that. I have an '05 single cab 4.3, 5-speed stick, and power is a bit soft but it has very good torque at low rpm where you need it.

Prior to putting a 383 in my 97 Express it had the L31 350. Used the marine intake, GM 196/206 @ 0.050 marine cam, custom 4" air intake ducting and Thorley tri-ys into the OE dual 3" pipes to the muffler. Tuned a P59 using the Mexican GMT800 L31 calibration as a starting point. Through a 4L85E and 9.5 14 bolt, made 272 whp @ 4,700 and 330 wtq @ 2,900. Still got 18-19 mpg highway cruising 2,400 rpm at 75 mph. Love seeing the older Vortecs get some love. The van loved a little timing too, especially in the higher gm/cyl area of the spark map it started entering when the airflow increased with breathing modifications.

That's not bad at all. I have an '05 Chevy single cab short bed, with the five speed stick and 4.3 V6. Power is good enough for me, especially since the fuel economy is so good for a full sized truck. Here in Texas at low altitude I get around 22mpg avg, and in Colorado at high altitude I've gotten as high as 27 on the highway up there. I bought my truck new in '05 and it has 163k miles on it. Too bad you can't delete the cat(alytic) converter up there in those mid-atlantic and new england states. The law is the law on emissions. And I won't recommend you replacing the stock cat with a high flow cat because they are a waste of money. You could always replace the cat with a bolt-on straight pipe and swap back on the cat for emission tests and then swap back on the pipe after. Just don't weld. What yo can do legally is put on a cold air intake system and replacing the stock muffler with a performance muff. I run a Flowmaster Super 10 and no cat(legal in my state) on my 2000 Blazer and I've got around 205hp out of my 4.3
