- Trouble swallowing food or liquids? Do you cough or feel like something is stuck in your throat when you eat? These are common symptoms of dysphagia. In this video, I show you three of the most commonly recommended swallow exercises and guide you through a full dysphagia workout. Can you complete the challenge?
These exercises are for individuals with swallowing problems caused by various conditions such as stroke, traumatic brain injury, Parkinson’s disease, head and neck cancer, or aging.

Super, happy you're back ! Really missed you. ❤
Aww, thanks Jodianne! Please let me know what you think of the new videos I'm making! And feel free to share if there are topics you are looking for information on in particular.
Temporarily. Thank you
Thanks!
Wow! Thank you so much Leslie! I appreciate this!
Ma'am, please create a therapy video on how to improve 's' sound pronunciation.
My 's' sound comes out like 'sh'.
Also, when I speak quickly, my words don't come out correctly."
Please help me."
Hi Shivam! I’ve been considering doing a phoneme specific video series, so thanks for the feedback. I’ll add your request to my list.
You may find my speech disorders video to be a useful resource: th-cam.com/video/6CzsZ5rNFyk/w-d-xo.htmlsi=zpM8LEGF94WXsluP
You give good, clear instructions and establish a quick rapport. I’m going to use this video with an immune compromised client in a few hours where we have a harder time modeling due to my wearing a mask. I owe you a cup of coffee! Consider setting up a Patreon-type service and let people pay you! A WHOLE grape? Sheesh! 😂
Jeff, you totally made my day! I went and bought myself a cup of coffee this morning at the corner coffee shop on you :) What a great use of this video for your immunocompromised client. Thanks for your support, feedback and Patreon suggestion, I'll look into it!

Thank you so much!! Have you heard of Vital Stim to electronically stimulate cricopharengeal musle?
Yes, I have! VitalStim is a brand of Neuromuscular Electrical Stimulation (NMES) devices. It is typically used in conjunction with traditional exercises and can target various muscles depending on placement. I do not have personal experience using it but have heard success stories from colleagues. The research seems to support it, albeit limited, but it remains a hot topic in the SLP world. www.dovepress.com/effectiveness-of-neuromuscular-electrical-stimulation-on-post-stroke-d-peer-reviewed-fulltext-article-CIA
@@SpeechSecrets Thanks Kasondra, would love to give it a try. In the meantime I am doing the exercises with you every evening.🙏
Thank you for the ecercises. I can't seem to do the exercises with only my saliva. I have to sip a tiny bit of water to activate any swallows. Will exercising improve my swallow?
It is common to need water BETWEEN repetitions with all exercises. It is fine to use liquid during the effortful swallow as it can also be used as a compensatory swallow strategy when eating/drinking. The masako and Mendelsohn should not be done with liquid. Swallow exercises do have evidence supporting use but I cannot comment on your condition specifically. To know what specifically will help your swallow would require a full evaluation. I hope you are able to get the support you need for this and that you’ve found this video helpful as well for education. Keep advocating for yourself! 💜 🙌
@@SpeechSecrets Many Thanks for your reply!!
First time doing this was able to do 6 on both excerises , very hard to do
These are challenging exercises! Way to go!
Mam. One side of my lips closes and another does not since my childhood when i talk so it makes lips dry very fast as one side lips touches on each character.
What to do to make one side not touch when i speak or make both side touch instead of one. Even my smile is one sided because of that. Plz make a video for that. Thanks.
Hey there! Thanks for commenting. I unfortunately legally cannot make any person specific recommendations. I hope you’re able to ask your medical provider for an assessment so they can consider the factors and physiology that cause this asymmetry. Understanding the cause helps know how to address it! Thanks for sharing your experience and I hope others can relate to it. 🙌
Thanks!
Thanks again so much Jeff! Hope the video was helpful for your client’s learning.
