I am a Speech-Language Pathologist who has been actively practicing in the field of dysphagia for many years. It is not recommended that these exercises be performed unless they have been prescribed by a Speech-Language Pathologist following an objective swallow assessment via a Modified Barium Swallow or a Fibreoptic Endoscopic Evaluation of the Swallow. For some people, they can make the swallowing mechanism worse and actually increase the risk of obstruction / aspiration. This video is a lovely visual aid to help people who have been prescribed these exercises / manoeuvres, but it should be made clear that people should not perform them unless instructed to do so by a qualified professional.

@@devilsKrEEd thank you so much for asking, you are so kind. 💕 I was finally approved for Medicare / disability, so I did get to go to speech therapy, and the best trick my speech therapist taught me was the same as number one that she has taught us here, the chin tuck! That helps me to swallow my saliva properly without is going into my lungs! although overall speech therapy did not work to get rid of my tube because apparently the little flappy thing in my throat that is controlled and connected to my brain, isd unable to be fixed to work so that I wouldn't aspirate if I eat or drink. So I am so on my feeding tube, but that is okay because I consider myself so very blessed. I did relearn how to walk and talk and write, which many people that have the type of brain lesion I have, are not so lucky. 1/3 die immediately, 1/3 get stuck in what is called locked in syndrome where they can only move their eyes for the rest of their life even though they are very alert and know what's going on, and the last third get a little bit better and accept their new normal, that's me! For that I am forever grateful and I am so thankful to be so blessed. So all in all I am doing fantastic! Thank you so much for asking my friend. Hi there, I have dysphagia due to an esophageal stricture and acid reflux. I'm mainly on a liquid diet with certain soft foods like yogurt and ice cream. I went several months without eating (only liquids) before I found a doctor that correctly diagnosed my problem. I'm being treated for it now they have to gradually dialate me once a month since my stricture was severe and closer to the top of my esophagus. I'm having a problem learning how to eat and swallow properly because it's been so long since I've eaten solid food. Its been a really difficult journey, I feel like I've completely forgotten how to swallow. Anytime I try to eat anything I feel like it's getting stuck. My question is how often do you suggest I do these exercises? I'd really appreciate your opinion 🙂

@@justiceforasifa9730 I'm so sorry to hear that. I know how difficult and scary it is to not be able to eat normally. I've been experiencing this for a year and a half now. My main problem was that it took me several months to find a doctor that correctly diagnosed my problem. It turns out I have an esophageal stricture, which means that a part of my esophagus becomes so narrow that it's hard to pass any food through, it also makes it very difficult to swallow. Because of that I've been on a liquid diet. It is very important to get your father to a doctor so that they can diagnose and treat him. Not eating for long periods of time is very serious. I ended up in the emergency room from dehydration and complications from malnutrition. My thoughts and prayers are with you. Please update me and let me know how your father is doing.
      God bless❤

The esophageal sphincter shutting combined with swelling and fluid/food going in to my airway and my body constantly trying to digest food in my mouth by sending up bile is really making it next to impossible to eat. Hello. I was diagnosed with Pharyngeal dysphagia due to a brain injury, but this swallowing problem it's getting worse the last few months, some days it's so hard to swallow and others I don't have any problems, recently I have the sensation that food its stock in my throat, I try to swallow very hard and drink a lot of water sometimes it works sometimes it doesn't, the sensation can last 1- 2 days and suddenly disappeared, I've noticed white bumps in my throat and doing research on internet i've been able to remove them. I'm impress of what the body can adapt to every circumstance, my point here it's that I have never watched a video of swallowing exercises because it doesn't affect me every day (but when does it's so bad, worse days ) and my body did every exercise you explain here specially the last one! It's it very hard living like this. Thank you for your videos!!

I have had several endoscopys now and every time the results (even with biopsies) come back negative. I can swallow but often food gets stuck. I think there are many factors I need to look into however, factors the doctors can't seem to point out. Doctors I find seem very good at writing prescriptions for different drugs I should take but I wonder if there is a link for me with things like lack of sleep, fasting, not drinking throughout the day, how strenuous exercises impact my swallowing, my T-levels, etc. Something is obviously triggering it, I can go weeks with not a single episode and then other times I have the choking sensation several times a day. Maybe I need to invest in a swallowing habit diary as well as my own health observations.

I have a question, Im pretty new to dysphagia general speaking. Only had it about 7 months now. So i mean its been a while but in comparison to most its not been all that long. I Actually was suggested the mendleson maneuver. In all honesty this one helped me a lot when i saw my slp the other week for the first time. In all honesty it has helped me a ton with not feeling like im getting any of my liquified food and drinks going down my windpipe any more. I'm curious though, will it become second nature to do this eventually? I was also told to hold for at least 3 seconds but the best i can do is 2, but it works out for me regardless. Granted it doesnt work 100% of the time but it definitely helps. I'm just a bit annoyed i seem to have to hold my finger to my throat every time I do it to get it to work so i was wondering if eventually i'll just be able to swallow this way with out needing the assistance of my finger lol

I have Trigeminal Neuralgia and it's miserable. Went to the Gi Dr and they told me that I have a small Hiatial Hernia and Gerd Acid Reflex Disease. Mild Esphogatis. Went to a Neurologist and they did MRI didn't find anything. It was Normal. Now they Sending me to ENT. Hopefully I can get some relief because it's a nightmare.

If you can't burp there's a subreddit called 'no-burp' where you can learn a lot about it. It's called R-CPD and it's a lower esophagus sphincter disfunction
