  • Swallowing disorders (dysphagia) affect an estimated 15 million Americans. If you have dysphagia or are helping someone to improve their swallow and ability to eat and drink safely, this video is for you. In this week's video I expand on last week's topic. I briefly explain 3 exercises and 3 positioning techniques to assist someone in swallowing safely.

My anxiety was keeping me from swallowing and one thing that helped me was looking in the mirror while eating so you can see your throat move and know that you swallowed it

Fast forward- I have since had all my teeth pulled, and have implants. My. jaw broke while biting on a chip. Worse pain I had ever felt. 3 jaw surgeries later, (2 got infected) I can't swallow much either. I have had a feeding tube off and on 3 times (mostly on). Latest was place yesterday. I went a year trying to eat and but couldn't maintain my weight without the tube. So anyone having swallowing issues, I feel ya. After going over 4 or t hours worth of this type of content, the techniques shown here are not exhaustive but are the most comprehensive an generally useful for a single video on this subject.

Made some progress in the past couple of days though so I am hopeful to see recovery to normal return to expected outcomes.

Hello. I was diagnosed with Pharyngeal dysphagia due to a brain injury, but this swallowing problem it's getting worse the last few months, some days it's so hard to swallow and others I don't have any problems, recently I have the sensation that food its stock in my throat, I try to swallow very hard and drink a lot of water sometimes it works sometimes it doesn't, the sensation can last 1- 2 days and suddenly disappeared, I've noticed white bumps in my throat and doing research on internet i've been able to remove them. I'm impress of what the body can adapt to every circumstance, my point here it's that I have never watched a video of swallowing exercises because it doesn't affect me every day (but when does it's so bad, worse days ) and my body did every exercise you explain here specially the last one! It's it very hard living like this. Thank you for your videos!!

@@devilsKrEEd thank you so much for asking, you are so kind. 💕 I was finally approved for Medicare / disability, so I did get to go to speech therapy, and the best trick my speech therapist taught me was the same as number one that she has taught us here, the chin tuck! That helps me to swallow my saliva properly without is going into my lungs! although overall speech therapy did not work to get rid of my tube because apparently the little flappy thing in my throat that is controlled and connected to my brain, isd unable to be fixed to work so that I wouldn't aspirate if I eat or drink. So I am so on my feeding tube, but that is okay because I consider myself so very blessed. I did relearn how to walk and talk and write, which many people that have the type of brain lesion I have, are not so lucky. 1/3 die immediately, 1/3 get stuck in what is called locked in syndrome where they can only move their eyes for the rest of their life even though they are very alert and know what's going on, and the last third get a little bit better and accept their new normal, that's me! For that I am forever grateful and I am so thankful to be so blessed. So all in all I am doing fantastic! Thank you so much for asking my friend. I hope this makes sense sometimes it's hard with my words. I apologize if it doesn't. I hope you are having a wonderful weekend and I wish you peace joy and love! 💖

I don't know if I struggle with the actual act of swallowing (that much) but swallowing food is hard, I made 3 scrabbled eggs the other day and it took me over an hour to eat them all. My mate did it in 5 min. I have to make the chunks so small in my mouth and chew them for like 2min (even though they're already scrambled) and cover it in saliva, just to swallow. It's crazy.

Same! I chew chew chew and sometimes I just cannot get myself to swallow it I have to spit it out and the food will literally be liquid? It’s almost like before I had this swallowing issue I’d swallow and food would just slide down no issues, now if I do swallow the food goes down SO slow or just feels stuck in a awkward place. I HATE THIS SO MUCH 🥲

THANK YOU!!! I had the ACDF surgical procedure over a year ago. I have some serious issuesafterwards with Dysphagia and Aspiration and dry heave on food\pills daily. I fear that aspiration pneumonia is upcoming if I don't do something!
The ENT's I consulted with didn't recommend any type of treatment or personal therapy. The only advise I got was chew food well, drink a lot of liquid with each bite, and eat my meals absorbed in no other external stimulus (watching TV and eating....ect) I'll whole heartedly perform exercises multiple times daily. It would be nice to feel like I'm not chocking after eating and running out of breath when swallowing liquid.

I have a question, Im pretty new to dysphagia general speaking. Only had it about 7 months now. So i mean its been a while but in comparison to most its not been all that long. I Actually was suggested the mendleson maneuver. In all honesty this one helped me a lot when i saw my slp the other week for the first time. In all honesty it has helped me a ton with not feeling like im getting any of my liquified food and drinks going down my windpipe any more. I'm curious though, will it become second nature to do this eventually? I was also told to hold for at least 3 seconds but the best i can do is 2, but it works out for me regardless. Granted it doesnt work 100% of the time but it definitely helps. I'm just a bit annoyed i seem to have to hold my finger to my throat every time I do it to get it to work so i was wondering if eventually i'll just be able to swallow this way with out needing the assistance of my finger lol

I have Gastroesophageal Reflux disease. I have heavy scarring in my esophagus and a useless, damaged flap of an epiglottis. The esophageal sphincter shutting combined with swelling and fluid/food going in to my airway and my body constantly trying to digest food in my mouth by sending up bile is really making it next to impossible to eat. I can get surgery to fix it, but it will eventually come right back.

Upright posture is great and I imagine that it would work best when back support is given by a chair or repositioned bed. Simply sitting on the side of a bed with someone with coordination problems could give an eater unnecessary things to think about.

In the mornings I have really bad anxiety I get really hot, heart racing, tons of clear stuff that run down my nose but gets stuffed up, feels like it goes down my throat so I try to swallow and it's difficult then I freak out more. If I turn my head down and to the left it seems that let's me swallow easier but it's weird and uncomfortable.

I am a Speech-Language Pathologist who has been actively practicing in the field of dysphagia for many years. It is not recommended that these exercises be performed unless they have been prescribed by a Speech-Language Pathologist following an objective swallow assessment via a Modified Barium Swallow or a Fibreoptic Endoscopic Evaluation of the Swallow. For some people, they can make the swallowing mechanism worse and actually increase the risk of obstruction / aspiration. This video is a lovely visual aid to help people who have been prescribed these exercises / manoeuvres, but it should be made clear that people should not perform them unless instructed to do so by a qualified professional.
