    I wasn't clear enough in my comments on repeater programming. If you'll look closely, you'll see that 6.4 is "repeater programing" and appears to be one page long. Remember the size of the pages in question? When you finally get to that page, its only half a page of text, no pictures and it completely skips over tones. Unless you already know what you're doing, this won't get you success.
    To me, this radio's target price range and audience require much more information and introduction. This radio is targeted at the new-ham or the ham-curious. If you don't know how to program a repeater already, all you'll get with this radio is frustration. Baofeng has been making radios for a long time and this is one of those things (along with filters) that they have had plenty of runway to fix.
    Thanks for watching.

    Its got some advantages like being able to edit a memory channel on the radio. On the uv5r you have to create a new channel and delete the old one just to turn on a ctcss tone that wasnt stored with the channel. ON the 17 just bring up the channel and turn it on and it stays in the memory.

    The one thing this radio really has going for it is cost. I have a UV-5R as well as a far more expensive Yaesu FT-5D. I use the Baofeng as a "stunt double" for the Yaesu. If I'm going to be doing something where the radio might get lost or damaged then I take the $25 radio instead of the $400+ radio. In fact my Baofeng has a pretty good scratch on the screen that would bring tears to my eyes on the touch-screen of the Yaesu. On the Baofeng? I just look at it and smile - it has already paid for itself.
    Is a -17R or -17R Pro enough of an upgrade to the -5R to merit an upgrade?

    So... it wasn't mentioned, and I would like to know if possible: *How many decimal points are actually programmable?*
    It shows *5* decimal points, but it looked like he was only able to program *3* decimal points. That seems like something worth mentioning, right?
    For instance, radioreference shows an available frequency of 453.5125 in an area I have been to. Three decimal point programming would not recieve the frequency without the remaining 0.0005. If the last two decimals on the unit's screen are not programmable, I think it really shouldn't show them, and mentioning if those two digits are available or not seems worth mentioning.

If you're not a ham, the GMRS license is the same price, but no test. In both cases, height means might and more watts out are better... But at about $30, it doesn't hurt to test the waters with either the GMRS version or the ham version baofeng offers. For the single channel check, I imagine a SA between to radios on the same frequency will give you yhe result you want. It should visually show you the collision occurring. For the radio itself, you would likely need a schematic to see the signal path. If the TX and RX are on the same path, then you will have your answer in visual form, looking to and from mic and speaker. Audibly, you press transmit on both units, and speak in one while listing to the other. That will give you the answer as well.
      For dual channel duplex, you can put one channel on the weather, and another channel to talk to your buddy. Audibly, if you can talk to your buddy while listing to the weather, you have your answer.
      In my opinion, I think these units do not share the same path from and to the speaker and mic. But hey, a test is a test. I would never have found out TDMA is a major strategical security problem with out testing things people said could not be done, or that didn't make sense to even try, all because I got a little curious.

    Is this radio capable of programming two bands v/u in a single memory channel for working the sats ?

    • @temporarilyoffline
      @temporarilyoffline  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I don't think so - you can program the offset, but probably not far enough away. This is also a half duplex radio, so while you could work sats, it would be easier if you had 2 of them.

    • @michaklein1193
      @michaklein1193 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@temporarilyoffline This is strange. My old Baofeng UV-B5 can be programed for 2 bands. I dont mind it being half duplex. I have made hundreds of qso's with the LEO sats this way. BTW my Yaesu FT-65E can not do that either.

    I orderd 2 of these radios. And I wanted the one that transmitting on 220 mhz. And I specifically told the seller I wanted the 220mhz one. And I only got one out of 2 that transmitts on 220 mhz. So it's a game of chance with these baofeng sellers.

    • @temporarilyoffline
      @temporarilyoffline  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The 220mhz radio should be a "UV-17L" and the 2/70 only should be a "UV-17R". If you got a UV-17R when you asked for an L model, send it back!

  • @KX2U

    I would expect that they are using the same guts for all their radios that fit this footprint but only turning on certain features or bands depending on the price point. We need to have a handy ham get inside one and figure out the process of making the radio more useable. hint, hint...

    • @temporarilyoffline
      @temporarilyoffline  ปีที่แล้ว

      100% agree - Baofeng doesn't make the "Radio-On-A-Chip" module that is inside, and I don't think they are packaging it up either. I'd love to play around with the chip on a "dev module". Gotta get in there and see. (This is how the UV-5R was also)

      This is a "Direct Conversion" receiver. in HT's the best we're looking for is "Super Heterodyne", they have the best ability to reject strong adjacent signals.

    • @temporarilyoffline
      @temporarilyoffline  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It looks like the 8R series of radios have been discontinued? They were first released in 2015, and no longer appear for sale. I can't say for sure, but I'd guess it's a ruling issue because those different radio services aren't "type accepted" for all of those different services. What you'd be looking for today would be a high quality radio that can have a "mars mod" done to it, and even then, it would probably be dirty on the bands it wasn't designed for.

    Another Ham Radio YTuber (Never Without Knowledge) just did a teardown and harmonics review (yesterday) of 3 separate variants of UV17 along with a UV21, he found the "plain" UV17 variant with a 2022-made board and GigoDevice ARM chip was actually giving a pretty clean output, unlike its "newer" affix-laden siblings. The most obvious difference is the LCD display shows a light-blue colored UI on white background instead of the black background.
    I think the plain UV-17 could become a coveted "clean" cheap ham radio and a good waterproof alternative to the Radioddity GT-5R.

    Hi there! I’ve just been super curious if I could work a satellite with a baofeng. I already have a BF F8HP and an arrow antenna. The antenna doesn’t have a duplexer so I have to use 2 radios, one for transmit, and one for receive. I plan on using the F8HP for transmitting. Could I successfully listen on a UV5R or one of these things? Anything else you recommend (transmitter or receiver, I’m looking for advice)? Thanks!

      One more thing before I forget. If I physically attach a radio to an arrow antenna (e.g Velcro on the boom) so it’s easier to hold the antenna and listen to the radio at the same time, will it attenuate the signals at all? Thanks again, KC1TOK Zach.
