    Will these cuttings grow on to produce flowers the same season? Thank you for well explained video.

      Yes, they will produce a full plant with flowers like a tuber would!🌸

    Watched a very informative video last year from Swan Island Dahlias in Oregon on dahlia cuttings. It worked well for me and I increased the number of my Cafe Au Lait and Spartacus dahlias!

    Very nice. I will try using pure honey as a rooting hormone and fungicide before I buy fresh rooting hormone. Because my water is treated by the city I will allow it to sit overnight in a bucket to allow the sanitizer to vaporize.

    I’ve just purchased some of your dahlia tubers- first timer here! Very excited! Anyways, I was wondering about your advice on when to plant here in Oregon. Am I too early now? Also, what sort of fertilizer to use. Do you use the Stimuplex on your dahlia tubers as well?

    • @SwanIslandDahlias
      @SwanIslandDahlias  4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Welcome to the wonderful world of dahlias! We would recommend planting more towards Mother’s Day for Oregon, as the soil and night times are still too cold for planting just yet. As for the use of Stimplex, this is only used for performing cuttings for Dahlias, and not for dahlia tubers. This is another way to propagate and grow more plants. Happy Gardening!

    Thank you for such a clear and informative video! I'm new to Dahlias and just having my first tubers come up (in southern California), and I'm looking forward to pinching them and propagating them! Thanks again!

    It was really a nice presentation. Thank you so much. May I ask something please.1. Shall we put pure vermiculite or shall we mix it with potting soil.
    2. Which part of the plant shall we spray the Stimplex?
    3. When shall we stop spraying the stimplex?
    4. When shall we stop fertilizing them with Miracle Gro?
    I hope you will reply and answer my 4 questions. I really need when I will try this method.
    Thank you again for this great video.

    • @SwanIslandDahlias
      @SwanIslandDahlias  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      1. You should put the vermiculite with potting soil.
      2. You should spray it on the leaves.
      3. You should spray every other week, until you transplant them outdoors.
      4. We only use Miracle Grow on the first watering then Stimplex for a couple months.🌸

    If you take cuttings from an established plant and root it mid season can it just be kept inside in a pot over winter? Do they need a dormant period?

    Wonderful video. I would like to know how you prepared the ones in the beginning of the video, to get them started and rooting.
    I live in zone 4 in Canada, and have put my tubers (4) LOL away for the winter in my cold cellar but when did you start the tubers off?
    Had they wintered and then planted for the cuttings? I really want to try this just need to know the timing Thanks for sharing

    So with a greenhouse that warm I guess you don’t need bottom heat to encourage roots? As long as you are leaving some of the eye on the tuber that same eye re-sprouts ??
    ....or it encourages a new one to pop up...I guess this is not the same as people taking cuttings that includes a bit of the tuber -doesn’t that (other)method permanently kill that eye?

    • @SwanIslandDahlias
      @SwanIslandDahlias  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Usually when taking cutting it will either sprout from another eye or send up another shoot from that same eye. No, we do not need bottom heat because our greenhouse is 70°!🌸

    • @SwanIslandDahlias

      Yes technically you could but usually it is too late in the season to do cuttings at that time.🌸

    Great video. Very informative, thank you! I have a few questions:
    1. You said the tubers that you take the cuttings from are discarded. Would they not be able to grow a proper plant after you take the 10 cuttings? Would cuttings past around 10 not provide viable plants?
    2. You mentioned a few times that you don’t sell the cuttings but use them to build up stock. Would these cuttings not form a full plant with its own tubers? How would they help you build stock if these aren’t the plants you sell?
    3. When pinching the tops of your “lanky” plants, would you not be able to use the pinched off stem to propagate into a new plant?
    Thanks again for this info. Will definitely be trying this myself!

    • @SwanIslandDahlias

      Yes, you can do this 1-2 times before planting the tubers. Once you pinch it is usually too late in the season to be propagating!❤️🌸

    Hello, thank you for this very informational video about dahlia cuttings. I have a question though. I'm in Milwaukie, OR, not far from you all and am wondering when I should start my tubers and then when to take the cuttings? I see a lot of videos on how to take cuttings, but having a hard time getting a timeline for the Portland Metro Area. I am in the process of setting up a greenhouse in my backyard. To I start the tubers in the greenhouse with a 75 degree temp? Or do I start them inside and when do I start? Thank you so much!

    • @SwanIslandDahlias

      Usually when you are pinching it is too late to do cuttings. Ideally you would do it in the winter and start them in a greenhouse. We do not have another product to recommend in place of Stimuplex❤️

    Thank you for sharing your knowledge with us Swan Island Dahlia. About long many weeks total is the process of taking 10 cuttings from the tubers?

    • @SwanIslandDahlias
      @SwanIslandDahlias  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Once a tuber has sprouted and a cutting has been taken then the cutting needs to be grown in a greenhouse type setting. The it needs to be transplanted out after the last chance of frost. It will then grow, bloom, and produce a small clump the first year!🌸

    I have a question. After you've dipped the cuttings in root hormone and placed them in the soil, do you water them then? Or do you wait until 4 hours later when you add the fertilizer? I'm experimenting with some cuttings and want to make sure I do it properly. FYI- I'm using powdered root hormone and not the gel as shown in this video. Thanks in advance for your response! Thank you thank you! I have several varieties I’d like to do this with! I know this video is over a year old but I hope you’ll see it and reply. So a cutting taken in February will wait in the green house until planting out in May? How do you hold them from growing all the way up in the greenhouse? Is it the temperature in the 70’s that keeps their growth slowed for so many months? They grow so fast usually, how do you slow them down while you wait for your weather to allow them to be planted outside? I hope this makes sense… Thank you in advance for your reply.

      I’m not an expert; however, I had wondered the same thing last summer. I found out that you need at least one eye to ensure the dahlia is viable. I mean … worst case, you don’t find an eye (cause they can be tough to locate!) and the tuber does nothing; it’s worth trying, in my humble opinion. 😊
