  • I have over 1000+ hours in Animal Crossing New Horizons, but I feel like the game has a bit of a different feel in the years since its release, despite not really changing much overall. Let's talk about why I feel it's different these days and whether or not you should get into it in 2023.

I think the game is still good for newcomers. I see these hardcore players now speedrunning their islands, but for me the joy of animal crossing was slowly starting to beautify small parts of my island with the few items I could collect.

Yes!! I always found it weird that youtubers would talk about taking the game slow and enjoying it and immediately proceeding to make it hardcore. It’s animal crossing.

I agree that the villagers being better would help, but new horizons problems are a lot deeper I think. I’m a veteran animal crossing fan (since GameCube) and there’s an overall lack of things I can do immediately in the game on any given day. Pretty much everything outside of the DLC is something you have to wait for, and it makes the game feel a lot more like chores than the previous ones. Some minigames would really help too imo

This game kept so many of us sane and busy during a wild time. I remember my GameStop let buy the game a day earlier since things were starting to shut down. We were all so unsure during those crazy times. Animal Crossing is so nostalgic for me ive played since GameCube I was probably 7/8 years old, I’m 30 now and will continue to play every game they release.❤

I feel like such an alien when I hear people talk about how acnh is just about decorating your island. I have an embarrassing number of hours in that game but I've never paid a ton of attention to the decorations. I never did much terraforming, i might have decorated smaller areas here and there with a theme, but not with an overall island theme. There's actually so much you can do that isn't decorating.

@@lpsbluecatprobackup5814 Nice, I definitely recommend the DLC. It’s one of the main things, making me play from time to time. Having a job in the game to make houses for villagers, you can really get creative. And you get paid to buy exclusive items.

I wish there were more interactions with villagers like playing random mini games or having them comment on certain design elements of the island. When i go to a villager's house there isn't much to do except talk to them, take a look at their stuff, and leave. Maybe watch tv together. Maybe with the arcade machines you could play mini games. How cool would it be to play pool with your favorite villager? Maybe shoot some hoops. Sure i get that Nintendo want people to primarily focus on designing the island but how about other things aside from that such as more interactions with villagers? They should also bring back the collectable mini consoles. I remember playing the original, finding an Nes, and being able to play Donkey Kong or even Mario Bros. And even if you can't play them it would still be cool to collect random consoles from Nintendo's history to display in my home. I could totally decorate my arcade room with random mini consoles. These things would add a lot more replay value.

I’m a collector by nature. This game has satisfied my need to collect in a lot of ways. Some people shop. I played and still play ACNH. I do wish the villagers were more observant and interactive. More than just “trophy wives”. I also wish there was more reason to play with others. There are very few reasons to play the game with friends even for the creative. I hope they fix this in the next one.

Totally agree with the 2.0 update point. Having EVERYTHING available from a three star island it's just soooo much. I restarted at the end of last year and put limits on myself. I'm NOT going to swim for the first few months, I'm NOT going to do DLC until I get at least my own house fully upgraded and designed inside and out and decide on my island's theme. But someone picking it up first time, it would be so overwhelming!

i got/started the game this month and i agree. granted i haven’t played animal crossing since the gamecube, but i feel like there is just so much to do! i haven’t even purchased the dlc yet because i think i want to focus on fully upgrading/paying my home loan, getting three stars, and getting the villagers i want. heck, i’m still trying to figure out what’s possible when it comes to creating my theme. it’s just so hard to comprehend just how many items are out there!! i’m not complaining because i love that animal crossing is a slow burn game. i don’t time travel or anything so i’m sure it will take me months if not a year to perfect my little island. i’m excited to play but it’s definitely a lot. i’m glad there are let’s plays and things out there to help guide me. it took me forever just to figure out where/how to get iron nuggets at the start of the game 😂

You have to love the franchise and the characters to understand why people still play. I feel like a lot of people rode the wave that was the 2020 game release and expected it to be some great multiplayer game. Truthfully it’s more of a solitary game despite multiplayer being an option. I’d categorize it more as a sandbox game or a cozy game. I wouldn’t say it’s a life sim or rpg because ur role in the game isn’t that complicated. Animal Crossing was made to feel like a home away from home and I think that still resonates with some people in 2023

I've been feeling more bored than in the past the last few times playing ACNH. Mostly because my island is complete (decoration and villager lineup), I achieved my ultimate goal of getting all DIY recipes (including the cooking ones), and so I don't really have anything to do anymore (aside from saying hi to my villagers or farming Nook Miles). I'm currently playing other games, like New Leaf, Mario Kart 7 and Pokémon Scarlet and Violet. When you really don't get as much fun as you had before when playing a certain game, you just need to take a break from it.

For me, yes. I like the design, and for an hour or so every day, I have chill. I've never found another game of this type as good, even before 2.0. I tried a few, but came back to ACNH. It's polished, it's as big as it can be given the limitations of the Switch, and in its own world, it works. The villagers have a lot more dialog added since 2.0. There'll be a new game out soon to go with the new console, and Nintendo has said that it is making the new console backward compatible, so maybe they'll add a bit to ACNH, or just start a brand new game.

I've finally picked up the game again after 9 months, when hard mode became popular. And if you didn't know hard mode makes you take the game at way slower pace, and I've come to realize that if you time travel, you're kinda ruining the game for yourself. Your rushing through everything even know it's supposed to be tooken day by day.

I still use ACNH as an escape from what is happening in my life now. I am playing hardcore and enjoying taking things at a slower pace. A lot of the HC players aren't speed-running things because if you stick to the rules laid out you really can't. Through this, I am now learning how to make designs that I am happy with instead of just getting things via downloading stuff.
Feel sorry that Nintendo doesn't see this game as something to continue to support. There are some things that could be better and I also believe that they overdid what they gave us with the 2.0 update. A lot of that could have been released a lot slower as well. Also, some of the pre-2.0 stuff doesn't happen the way that it did previously.

heya i have a suggestion for your land bridges - if you don't need it just ignore it and let my comment feed the algorithm 👀 but basically, you have side A and side B of the land and the bridge between them, and the wood plank design is only on the bridge part which makes it look a little bit cut off, or almost squeezed in between two land masses - if you were to add planks on the land part on either side of the bridge it'd make it look more sturdy, like it sits on top of the land. it could be the same full square design if you wanna save custom slots or like additional half-square wide planks just as finishing pieces. there, just wanted to throw an idea 👀👌🏻

My only major gripe to New Horizons which might bother some newer players is how online play works if nobody ever made minigame Islands or stuff and villagers themselves. Other than fun dream island minigames, the online play sucks and although I never went online much in New Leaf, reading what you can do, it shines better only if the community isn't active. New Leaf was my first animal crossing and I found both New Horizons and New Leaf have suffered from terrible villagers. In my 3 months of playing New leaf non-stop I always had the same 6 - 10 dialogue boxes for villagers asking for food all the time or give a present which started becoming a chore rather than something enjoyable. I only had the hide-and-seek prompt, twice. It was fun although too cheesy with the camera vanishing hiding spots. With New Horizons, I liked that there was much more varied dialogue (as of 1.11 which nobody really noticed) but there's almost no interactions with the player. I almost never get villagers to ask me to do something for them or play some fun games other than the treasure hunt. If I had to choose a set of villagers, I would choose New Horizons in this aspect. Other than these two problems, I personally think New Horizons is better than New Leaf which makes it still worth it to new players from my perspective. Sure you can argue that there were so much QoL problems which bothered everyone but this didn't bother me. Its not rare for players to say New Leaf is far superior than New Horizons but I dont think its fair to ditch New Horizons just because it's not the new New Leaf.
My general pros and cons from NL to NH:
    New Horizons Pros:
-Island creation is much greater than any other animal crossing game
-Graphics and sound design (not soundtrack) are amazing
-The core animal crossing features like fishing, catching bugs, and getting fossils is better than the other animal crossing games
    New Horizons Cons:
-Villagers don't really bother you for anything
    -Online play isn't that good
-Designing your island will take time
    New Leaf Pros:
-Minigame island as you progress later
-Villagers have more activities you can do
    -Shops are much better
    New Leaf cons:
-Villagers are bland as crap outside of the tasks they can give you
    -Limited customization
    -Online is dying

Yes island design is a huge part of this game but to me there’s a lot you can do even without it. I don’t really focus on island design and I still pick up the game very often. I just love the cozyness of it and the relaxation it provides. Plus, if you are a collector or a completionist, there is plenty to do! I have never time travelled and never went to treasure islands and although I certainly have nothing against this (people should be free to play this game however they want), to me I feel like this is what has prevented me from getting burn out.

Did not make it past the intro where be begged for likes and to follow. Imagine going to see the next Marvel movie and before it starts tony stark comes out and begs for likes before you see it.
