I always told my wife that when we needed new tires, we needed to trade the truck in for a new one with new tires. She’s caught on, so now I just keep buying tires. You have a great truck, buy tires and wheels.
I think I would get the F450. I like the wide spaced front wheel track for sharper turning, and the beefier suspension, axles etc that make it more capable. They are both rated as 14000gvwr for more favorable insurance, registration(non commercial), but like you said the Ram only has a higher payload because it has lighter weight components/curb weight. I would choose the truck with heavier running gear and less (on paper) legal payload.
I’ve had all three and liked them all. Currently, loving 2020 f450. Don’t underestimate the value of the wide rake front end on the 450 - simply a game changer on the manoeuvrability side of things and separates it from all trucks including the 350 in my opinion providing payload isn’t an issue!
Long time 450 owner.... 19.5 inch wheels typically put you at commercial tire dealers, many shops can't deal with them. Could be a factor for you. IMO you have a great setup with current Ram, I would not decrease payload. As previously mentioned, let your exhaust brake do your heavy lifting. Good luck with your decisions.
My dad has the Ford 450 and has a Lance truck bed camper. He has nothing but great things to say about the 450. He went from the 350 to 450 2 years ago. Does great in our mountains out here in Colorado.
Hope to see you out on the road sometime, I’m in colorado also. I went with the F450 vs the F350 to haul my Arctic Fox 1140. These arctic fox campers are very well build but heavy! Deciding factor was just looking at components side to side on both trucks and the F450 is way more stout. Bigger brakes, axle capacity, beefier frame and of course the wide track front axle that makes it look just absolutely mean. Suspension all I added were Torklift upper stable loads & a set of timbrens. Handles perfect over anywhere I’ve ever taken it.
I have the same 2018 3500 same color. Put on the Torque Lift fast guns for tiedowns airbags with the remote I can adjust from upfront while driving took the stock tires off at about 18,000 and put Goodyear KO twos still quiet after 10,000 miles plenty of traction. That’s what a lot of the overland People use on their jeeps. Also put a Helwig stabilizer bar $400 makes a big difference going into the corners Add the 975 model. Finally sold it. It became a pain in the rear trying to get it on straight, taking off the tailgate. It was fine once it was on.
I put 19.5 Visions and Hankook DH 07 tires on my Ram 2500 35k miles ago. Best upgrade I've done for hauling my camper. The tire tread still looks like new and sway decreased tremendously.
I own an f450 with a truck camper on it it's a nice truck and also I own a ram 5500 with the utility box on it and auto crane. If I was going to start all over again I would choose to ram 5500 hands down Cummins is the best engine on the market and with that transmission with that Jake brake going through the mountains makes a big difference
I worked for Ford as a diesel tech for 8 years. I have driven every Ford in ever configuration you name it and I prefer Ram over Ford over all when it comes to reliability and power Ram takes the award I have a 2022 Ram 3500 and I couldn't be happier and I know exactly what you mean about the exhaust brake it really does start stopping you instantly really saving the brake pads from over heating
Watch out on loading a heavy truck camper on the ram trucks. One owner recently had his modern ram 3500 dually split in half after traveling with a truck camper on the truck's bed. Ram's components and frame might not as capable and durable as the Ford's.
@J.L. Salayao he was also way over loaded and had a wrong configured truck for what he was hauling that would of happened to a Ford or a chevy the guy was a dumbass
@@joegrau5431 Ford had a strength test on the 2017 plus ford super duty frame with multiple super duty frames attach to it hanging in the air and it held pretty well. If it was a ford super duty, that frame would still be no problem with that load.
Well, honestly you have to do what is best for you! I like Fords and have owned nothing but Ford pickups. My 2007 F-150 4x4 has 200k on it with all original equipment. I did buy some 10 ply Firestone tires . Semi off road but highway as well! Best tires ever. Thanks for sharing. 👍
I bought a 2022 Ram, 3500 limited, I over paid because of chip shortage. I was looking at the 450 but the payload is simply not as close as it seems. I also have a lance truck camper 2005, (981) which is about 4500 everything in it. HOWEVER, it's not impossible to go up to nearly 2 and half ton (5000 pounds). . I can't compare the two and I hope I didn't buy the wrong truck. My 2006 Ford F 350 Diesel is currently for sale, for 27 thousand, with 22 thousand miles. Sharpest dually I ever seen. Fixing to upgrade the camper it's also for sale for 19 hundred.
Hey Todd. If you're planning on buying a new HD Ford, I would suggest that you hold off for a bit. The current body style is near end of life. If you're going to spend that kind of money, you may as well have the latest design. In the meantime, you've already got a great truck.
When I was a kid all I drove was a Ford but when Dodge came out a cummins I bought the motor not the truck and I loved my 92 cummins 5 speed manual and when I bought my 05 new 4 door 8 foot bed dullay 6 speed manual trans and manual transfer case and it rode so good and quite and Iam still driving it at 150 K my brakes are still 50% this is a great truck no def fluid it’s just a great rig !
My 2021 SRW Silverado gas 3500 crew cab has 4300# payload. I changed the rims to method hd 4500# rated and tires to Cooper discoverer at3 4080# rated. Added timbrens which are a huge help. My camper is an Arctic fox 811. I also tow a boat or an ATV wherever I go. Dually trucks are great too but this setup has been awesome. Been across the country and back a few times. Love my camper. Fit anywhere, go anywhere.
I have a 2018 ram with 342 gears I pull a 10,000 pound excavator and track loader. The transmission shutters taking off and the dealership says there’s nothing they can do about it. I always used to run 373‘s and with your 410 you should come out of the hole really well. Another note the Ford seats are more comfortable on a long trip
I have the same truck as you with 18400 miles and the exact same Problem with the front tires. Dealer put two new front tires on last week but I’m suspect now. I’ve been looking at the F-350 lately as the comfort of the Dodge just isn’t there for me and can’t find a solution to the horrible seats. Thanks for the videos.
Todd, if you’re going to use the truck on your property as well as a base for your camper, the relative ease of loading and unloading with the Ford would be my reason for buying it.
To start off with I am a little disappointed that your partner in crime wasn’t with you in your video. You all do such a great job on your videos working together. Also I hope you haven’t forgot about the muffler addition on the generator. Did it make it any quieter? Now to the trucks. In my opinion you should hang on to what you have. It looks awesome under that 975. The Cummins engine I think is the best one out there. The Ultimate truck in my opinion would be a Cummins diesel engine hooked up to an Allison transmission. I am a Ford man and own two, a 1985 F250 6.9 diesel and a 2004 F350 6.0 diesel. I love my old Ford because the engine is easy to work on. The other doesn’t have the payload capacity for my 1172, so I am having to get another truck that will handle it. I am around 2,000 lbs overweight. I have been doing extensive research on what to get for my overweight problem and am going with a Chevy 5500HD for these reasons. Ford and Dodge and probably Chevy pickups if you have to do any major engine work, you have to pull the cabs of the chassis. All of the pickups most everyone is having to do some modifications to the suspension system to carry the truck campers and they are also having to worry about being close to the payload capacity. With a pickup bed you loose extra storage that you can achieve having your camper on a flatbed. The 4x4 drive transfer is gear driven instead of chain.
Hi John Harley, Wow 2,000 lbs overweight is a lot but a Chevy 5500HD would definitely do the job. I have looked at the Ram 4500 & 5500's but I have a height restriction with having a 12' tall garage door. The ones I measured would be too tall by the time I add a flatbed and camper from what I can tell. Would love to have one though and the extra storage would be great. Thanks for watching ~ Todd
Very interesting and informative video. I have also considered the same. I think I am going to hold out for the 2023 HD RAM which rumor has will be offering an 8 speed Allison with the Cummins.
Truck Campers may be the perfect use case for medium duty trucks like the Chevrolet 4500-6500 series. It has high load capacity and some trailer capability as well. It does use a derated Duramax as it is designed for commercial use so it will last forever. They can order it set up for what you want to do with it, i.e. weight of your camper on the truck along with the tow bar and the max weight trailer you'd want to tow. Not sure what bed and tow bar options you might have with it though. Hope you are able to get better tires, bulging is a sign of poor tire but also over loaded tire. Glad you discovered that problem before it became more dangerous.
We have a Ram 250, Cummins, 4x4, airbags, Helwig bigwig sway bars, pacbrake exhaust brake, and torq lift fast guns and frame tie downs. Have a Northern Lite 10.2 EXCD that weights about 4500 lbs loaded. Front axle weights 4800 lbs. Rear runs a little less than 8000 lbs. We run Michelin 245/70/19.5 on custom steel wheels all rated for 5000 per wheel. Caution, spare won't fit under the truck with sway bars and custom 20,000 lb hitch. With 75,000 miles on the 19.5s with fully loaded camper plus hauling a 2500 lb utility trailer, very pleased with handling and tire life. Only negative with 19.5s is unloaded with the minimum 75 psi per Michelin, it rides really ruff unloaded. Loaded it is great.
You need a GM Kodiac flip over nose they are not good for towing but are great for hauling. But anything over a 350 you have to register it as a RV when brand new and insurance will stay the same.
If you go with the larger wheel/tire size, make sure you recalibrate the speedo. It is easy to reprogram. Good Luck and great videos. Safe Travels and Happy Trails.
Hi Todd- Great video. We speak the same language. I went through this same process when considering a new Lance truck camper. The F350 dually has the higher payload capacity but the F450 has the big brakes and wheels and wide track front end with that awesome turning radius. In the end, we went with a F250 Platinum and a Lance travel trailer. It just made sense for our needs. Our Lance 1985 is on order and due any week now. (Same trailer as your friends the McCormicks from TWD). Having said all this….if I ever upgrade to a larger trailer or 5th wheel. I would absolutely get the F450. Yes for the brakes and turning radius. But let’s be honest, it is THE most sexy and badass truck available.
You guys think the F450 could be derated but actually has higher payload than stated? Wouldn't it best to go by rear tire payload capacity then? What grade tires would you pick?
My F350 DRW had a 5500 pound payload. So going to 450 not always best idea when payload is important factor. And the engine is only 1 part of the drive train.
Hey Gary, Good to hear from you. I agree the F450 is not a great idea when it comes to payload. Your F350 with 5500lbs payload is really good. I hope your doing well. Thanks for watching. Todd
@@RunawayRoses Good day Todd. I'm doing very well, just got done doing a cross country trip. You might also want to think about a carbon fiber air tank instead of a pump. Most 12 volt pumps are pretty slow and the carbon fiber tanks hold like 4500 psi! One small/medium tank can fill all your tires like now, no waiting for compressor. On a Ford, if you order your 350 with camper package you get upgrade rear springs and if you order it with snow plow prep you upgraded front springs. What you get is the 450 spring package on the 350. The 450 has a much heavier rear diff which reduces payload.
The carbon fiber tank sounds awesome. There are pros and cons with both the 350 and 450. Both are great trucks. I've thought about a Ram 5500 or a Ford F550 with a skirted flatbed. But they measure to be too tall with our camper on the back for our garage door. That extra storage would be awesome though. We're thinking about a another Northern lite or Bigfoot. We'll see.
I bought a new F350 dually in 2017. Zero issues with my truck. Completely untouched from factory. Only thing I've touched is fuel / air filters and oil changes. I love it. My vote is the Ford.
Hi Todd I’m a ford guy you’ve got a nice truck I would just put some good tires on the truck you have I’ve run cooper tires on my trucks for years they are great tires for the money 19.5s are going to cost a ton and ride ruff.
Honestly I didn’t notice that much difference between my 2020 F350 to my 2022 F450. It’s very close and barely noticeable. I was shocked at the Comfort of the F450. Or should I say pleasantly surprised.
Some guys work their butts off for 40-50 years. Save and invest. Ignore every latest “gotta have” gadgets. And skip the fancy cars, clothes, and jewelry.
The wide track front on the 450 is a game changer. Also, the 350 dually and 450 have the same rear suspension. They derated the 450’s payload to keep it in a certain class after the heavier axle and other heavier duty components (gvwr limit). So, legally you can haul less, in actuality you can haul the same as a 350/3500, maybe even slightly more. I’d just go with the f450 and see if they can move the truck to the next class up and give you the gvwr full rating that the components can handle.
I have a '22 f450 with adaptive steering, everyone that ever ridden in my truck or drove my truck says it rides and drives like a Cadillac. Adaptive steering is a real game changer. I own a 350 and a 450 and the 450 beats the brakes off of the 350 in every way
I’m a Ford guy and I change trucks every 4 years. Your right about the Jake brakes, they sucks compared to Ram Cummins but for quality of engine, I would say that power stroke is a way better motor, very good on fuel, quieter, and way more powerful. Dodge is a great truck but ´ think that Cummins is a little behind time. And as for the 450’s. Their mostly for pulling instead of hauling. There heavier built cuts them down weight capacity. I would recommend a 350 for a truck camper set up.
If it’s not broke, don’t fix it and stick with what you know and makes you happy (and makes the most financial sense). Everybody has an opinion when it comes to trucks and certainly diesels and they are more than happy to share it…with everybody. Truth is they know what they know and in most cases haven’t actually had more than just one truck brand they have been loyal to and only know what they see on social media about the other brands. I carry the same camper as you, a 2021 975 on a 2020 F350 6.7 SRW.
What kind of wheels & tires does your F350 have so you didn't feel the need to go dually? I'd like to keep to SRW myself, but it seems everyone says a dually is safer with heavier campers.
@@celestepalm6949 I run the stock Goodyear Wrangler LT275/70R18 Load Range E tires. As with my response above, everybody has their opinions but I would suggest you do what you are comfortable with. I am comfortable carrying my camper on my SRW truck.
if you have the F450, I’ve read that you should not drive on a sandy beach unless you want to get towed out. The tires can’t be deflated to ride on the sand. The F450 has a really nice turn ratio that others can only dream about!
Tough call. That 450 is a beautiful truck. I do think truck camper dealers do not do much. As far as helping a consumer think about trucks capabilities mods etc. These truck campers are a completely different rv. They are awesome but different challenges especially with trucks. Nice share.
I had 19.5 tires on my Ram 3500 SRW....never again, too stiff. Plus the suspension really isn't designed to handle the added wheel mass. The Ford needs the bigger brakes to handle those heavy tires. You will have to visit only truck tire shops, no one else handles 19.5s. Very limited tire selection available also. I would look at Toyo M-55 tires if you want a 17" commercial tire. Also, not that you will haul fast with the Lance, but 245/70R19.5 commercial tires are rated at 85 mph, any larger size tires and they go down to 75 mph.
I'm a lifelong Ford truck guy...just ordered my first Ram...took me 6 months of digging and I was going back and forth so much it was driving me crazy...Ram went back to the cp3 pump for 2021 Ford still run the craptastic cp4...recalls on the 10 speed trans and windshields from Ford and now a lawsuit over the power tailgate...couldn't get the color combo I wanted with the king ranch trim...went to the Ram dealer and got everything I wanted....after discounts the Ram was 6500 less than the Ford...yes comparable trims and options...the exhaust brake in the Ram is far superior than Ford and GM...Ram gets better mpg's while towing and was second up the Ike gauntlet...and first performance wise coming down....can't wait to get my new Ram...
The Toyo AT3's are really hard to find these days. I ended up buying the Coopers in a 255/80-17. They are awesome so far. I've been driving Dodge trucks since 1987. The only problem I have had was with my '01 Cummins truck that had the Brazilian #53 block in it. It cracked like the 100,000 other blocks did. Cummins was sued over this issue and should have probably sued the foundry that decided to make these blocks with thinner walls to "save weight". Anyway I have driven the other two diesel powered trucks as a freelance writer for automotive magazines and by far the Cummins is the superior engine. There aren't many people swapping out a Cummins to put in a Power Stroke or Duramax, but there are actual companies out there that build swap kits to swap the Cummins into a Ford... My next truck will be a Ram 4500 with a pickup bed on it.
Are 255/80-17 the biggest tires (rear and front) you can put on the factory rims in a RAM 3500 without a lift/level? I believe that 235/80-17 came standard from the factory.
I bought a brand new RAM sport, LOADED. After having it a yr I realized I can't buy a camper to put in the back because she's too small , plus I was having a lot of electronics problems. I run into a old fella that had a 1997 350 dually 7.3. She never saw a winter because she spent her time in flordia or the barn. She looked like it was in a time capsule. I fell in love with it n bought a 1161 lance. I SOLD MY NEW TRUCK N NOW DRIVE THIS n she's sitting in the shop ready to go next yr!... I still have 2 Harley's, corvette n a new cadi to drive ANYWAYS!✌
Lol exhaust brakes are the best in the Rams! I own a 2021 3500 Laramie High output 4:10 rear end 4×4! Love this truck! Have owned a Ram 2012 3500 non dually 4×4! 96 3/4 ton Dodge! All my Dodges/Ram's out pulled out preformed gotten much better fuel mileage than both Ford350s and yes even the F650 with a cat engine in it! Was a commercial horse hauler and my Dodges never left me on the side of the road or somewhere broke down with all ad of horses! Ford's did!
I have a f350 and lance 1181. I'd go with a F-550 If I was looking at new trucks. I think the 450 would haul your lance better than the 3500 but you would probably be over or very close to the 14k lbs with the 450. It's sort of a bummer that all 550s are de-tuned but if you're overweight and get in an accident your insurance may not cover it.
If your Ram is running well, doesn't need anything major mechanically done to it. I would not buy another truck - if you are looking for something different because you are use to trading every 2 to 5 years I understand that if it's your daily driver. If you're wanting to do a upgrade to your Ram - check out Bulletproof Diesel.
Hey Todd. From my years of being a fleet manager and also managing auto repair shops, Ford is not something i would ever recommend to anyone for anything. I have never seen anyone have a really great experience with Fords so called "better idea". For the application you have there, i would recommend looking at the Chevy Duramax. I have a really good friend that owns a repair facility that i used to manage for him. He owns a 2017 Silverado Duramax dually and pulls a huge 3 axle fifth wheel toy hauler. He used to be die hard Ford all the way. With the Allison trans and the Duramax engine, it is dollar for dollar the best pulling and economical and toughest truck out there for what you are doing. I pray you leave that Ford on the lot. Also, Michelin tires are the absolute best tire out there for light truck and heavy truck as well. Big $$ yes, but tires are not a place to try and save money on. Be blessed my friend. Ron and Cindy in Va. PS- stay stock on the wheel application as well, save yourself the money and put it into the Michelin tires.
Hey Ron, Good to hear from you and thanks for your advise. The Duramax is a great motor and I've always been a GM fan. I didn't have much luck with my Duramax through it had a blown head gasket which is pretty common. Cummins and Allison would be a great combo I think. Not sure what tires I'll get but Michelin tires are on my short list. Take care and thanks for watching. ~ Todd
Having owned all 3 dully’s there is good and better for each. Here is my observation hauling a 38 foot DRV. 14,000 to16,500 pounds with a Gen X gooseneck. The F450’s steering is unreal..much better then the Ram 3500 or the Chevy 3500. The Ram and Chevy both have a better interior….more useful and more appealing. The engine brake on the Ram is a boat anchor…..it will slow your ass down period. F450 is ok and with the bigger front brakes does the job. I can’t comment on the Chevy….never had to use it. The Ram is louder, then the Chevy and the Ford seemed to be quieter. Power…..the F450 (2021) pulled better, again in my opinion. General over all quality goes to Ford. All had minor issues and some cheap parts but less (that broke) on the Ford, then Chevy, then Ram. If someone gave me a choice between the Power Stroke, Cummins or Duramax and said go drive 400,000 miles I would take the Cummins. I am a fan of the Allison Trans on the Chevy over the Ford 10 speed or the Ram. Looks…..Ford hands down. These are just my opinions, they are all good trucks….and beasts! Buy what you like but do yourself a favor and at least drive all 3.
Good comments on your opinions. I agree they should all be driven before someone makes a decision. The Ford is tempting but I do like my Ram. Thanks for watching!
Owned a 2017 Ram Mega cab limited with alt ride height loved that truck. It towed a 43’ fifth wheel with a 15k dry weight. I regretfully sold that truck in 2021 and just purchased a 2022 f450 limited. What I miss about the Ram is the exhaust brake, air bags and cummins engine. That combination is just too hard to beat coupled with the seats which extremely comfortable. Now what I disliked about the ram is the mirrors, limited capacity fuel tank, seat vibration, and the rough shifting of the Aisin tranny. The tranny would downshift sometimes and it felt as if I was hit from behind by another vehicle. The f450 has all the creature comforts known man! The only thing I dislike about the f450 is the anemic exhaust brake and the loud mechanical radiator fan. The 10 speed tranny shifting is smooth as butter. All in all, can’t go wrong with either truck.
Howdy! We have a 2019 Ram dually with Super Springs and a 2021 Lance 1172. The truck does great. However, I’m a little Leary of our stock Nexen tires after seeing the trouble you’ve had with yours. I’ve been researching which tires to upgrade with too. It’s just like the great truck debate, one guy says this and the other guy says that. When I was considering trucks I talked to several mechanics and asked them which diesel dually truck they would buy and they all said either a Dodge Ram or a Chevy/ GMC Duramax. They said Ford still has some problems with their engines so I went with Ram because the Chevy wouldn’t fit in our garage 😀. I suggest talking to some of your local mechanic shops and see what they have to say. For whatever it’s worth, I’d just upgrade your tires and not spend anymore than that. Best of luck to ya. I’m looking forward to seeing what y’all end up doing, especially which tires you get.
Congrats on your sweet set-up! I wondered if your 2019 Ram drw's payload was over 5k to haul the 1172. Are you happy w/ how your slides come out? I'd feel better if they were Happyjack w/manual option.
Hey Rabbi, I can't think of anything specifically as a Lance issue. I would just say to check the roof really well for leaks or damage. Also bring a flashlight and open all the cabinets and look in the corners for signs of any water damage. Do the same checking the floor and look from underneath if you can. Check the tires and their age. The week and year they were made should be stamped on the tires. If your not sure just consider you may want to replace them right away to be safe. Try all the systems to make sure they work. Check the age of the batteries. Check the exterior walls to make sure there is no delamination. If it has slides check their seals, run them in and out make sure it sits flush to the wall when it's in for travel. Take your time and don't be in a rush. I hope that helps. Thanks again for watching and good luck on the camper. ~ Todd
I have the same 2018 RAM 3500 as you, with a Lance 1131, but I added the air bags myself. I love my RAM, and would just upgrade the wheels and tires if I were you.
As much as I'd love an older Lance 1172, figure a 975's weight widens finding older Ford/Ram duallys that can handle a near or just over 5k fully loaded camper. I'd love something like a Ram 3500 Tradesman with the 7k+ payload but that's a future dream now, gas or diesel.
F350 CREWCAB DUALLY WITH NEW 7.3 GASSER MOST OVER 6K ON THE PAYLOAD. IVE SEEN A LARIAT LOADED WITH 6082 POUND PAYLOAD CAP. WITH THE 7.3 GASSER/10 SPEED. BUT YOUR TRUCK IS A GREAT SET UP...DIESEL TORQUE IS INSANE! ID KEEP IT. YOU ALREADY HAVE AIRBAGS ITS PERFECT.
Curious why your are trying to compare a Ram 3500 to a Ford 4500. Just my outlook. The Ford having that 1 1/2 inch will allow your camper more room to slide around or shift in the bed even with your tie downs. Just a thought
And if you have to work on a Ford diesel you have to pull the cab and that alone is a good enough reason to run and not look back and all the extra parts you need because it’s a 8 cylinder run and don’t look back !!!
Your 3500 ram Excellent truck 🤔 But the f450 might not have the gvw bed weight put 29,000 lbs behind your Ram W/truck camper see what happens The F450 is a towing monster depending on gears I own a 2013 F450 4wd crew cab [ true cab chassis DERATED 6.7 330/660 4:88 Gear ratio I can max my payload out at 6000lb and still tow 32,000 no PROBLEMS
Your Ram is a better truck than the Ford for the payload…..I have the same truck and I choose it for the payload……as for tires stay with the factory size…..when you go to larger rims the sidewall of the tire gets smaller unless you go to a taller tires……but then your truck will be taller (beinpg able to get the camper in your garage)…..smaller sidewalls will also give a rougher ride…..check out the Falken tires…….they ride good and no road tire noise!…..I have the Falken Wildpeak A/T3W tires…… already have more miles on them then on the stock Nexen tires……I went with the stock size and rating on them……so my payload rating and truck height stayed the same…….way cheaper for tires rather then wheels and tires…..save you over 3k for just tires (7 tires)
You do you but I wouldn't do it. We used every Ford made from 250 up to 750 at work. Pulling back hoes an track hoes we sub contract for ATT. We also had a couple dodges an Chevrolet they would out do an last longer an less trouble than the Ford. An I am not a Ford Chevy or dodge person.
You have the best truck now, we have the 2019 3500 and I changed out tire for BF Goodrich K02’s and the ride is great.
I always told my wife that when we needed new tires, we needed to trade the truck in for a new one with new tires. She’s caught on, so now I just keep buying tires. You have a great truck, buy tires and wheels.
A Ram 4500 pickup with the wide track front end and 19.5 wheels and tires would make the perfect truck 👍
Did you upgrade your brakes?
No, just oem replacements. Never felt the need.
Thank you for this clip, I am no very confident to get the Ram 3500.
The Ram 5500 Cab Chassis is an awesome looking Beast plenty of payload
We bought a 2021 Ram 3500, hemi 4:10 rear with a of payload 7,680 lbs
Nice, it sounds like it may be a single cab dually. Very cool! Thanks for watching!
Great payload! A crew cab keeps the windshield out of a big camper's shadow.
Hard to beat the Cummins too.
Nice job I'm a Ford guy and I have a f450 with Airbags and you are right with the payload. I still like the Ford but great review
Hi Lucky Ducky, It sounds like you got a good system that works for you. That's awesome! Have fun and safe travels! Thanks for watching
You have the best truck . Stay with the ram . I tried the Ford . After 18 months went Back to the ram .
I have a 2018 ram with 342 gears I pull a 10,000 pound excavator and track loader. The transmission shutters taking off and the dealership says there’s nothing they can do about it. I always used to run 373‘s and with your 410 you should come out of the hole really well. Another note the Ford seats are more comfortable on a long trip
i have a new 3500 SRW and did the 19.5s hankook a35. I think it rides great and I really like having the 5000k rating on each wheel.
Thanks for letting me know about your experience with 19.5's on your 3500. ~ Todd
Since the jake brake works so good on the Ram do you need the bigger brakes of the Ford F450?
Yes, breaks bring you to a stop. Jake brakes do not!
I have the same truck as you with 18400 miles and the exact same
Problem with the front tires. Dealer put two new front tires on last week but I’m suspect now. I’ve been looking at the F-350 lately as the comfort of the Dodge just isn’t there for me and can’t find a solution to the horrible seats. Thanks for the videos.
Great informative video, thanks for sharing.
Todd, if you’re going to use the truck on your property as well as a base for your camper, the relative ease of loading and unloading with the Ford would be my reason for buying it.
Wow. Beautiful set up. On your truck do you have air bags or something for suspension ! I would like to buy the same kit!
@@RunawayRoses I am so jealous of your garage but again that’s another reason to hanging on to that Dodge because of the clearance issue.
Very interesting and informative video. I have also considered the same. I think I am going to hold out for the 2023 HD RAM which rumor has will be offering an 8 speed Allison with the Cummins.
Me too!
Lots of good info here. TY!
Just found your channel and have been considering a Truck Camper. Great info!
Only negative with 19.5s is unloaded with the
minimum 75 psi per Michelin, it rides really ruff unloaded. Loaded it is great.
You need a GM Kodiac flip over nose they are not good for towing but are great for hauling. But anything over a 350 you have to register it as a RV when brand new and insurance will stay the same.
I have the 2017 F450 with a lance 1172, love it. couldn’t ask for a better setup.
Does your 2017 F450 payload exceed the fully loaded weight of the Lance 1172? That's a big boy!
If you go with the larger wheel/tire size, make sure you recalibrate the speedo. It is easy to reprogram. Good Luck and great videos. Safe Travels and Happy Trails.
Shouldn't have to if overall tire hight and rolling diameter is within 1/2"
Hi Todd-
Great video.
When you get perfect setup please Let me know I'm working on it Too
Ford scorpion 6.7 is a ticking time bomb. Aluminum heads and CP4 injector pump is a joke.
No more diesels for me. 7.3 Godzilla is my next truck.
Or should I say pleasantly surprised.
i honestly wonder how people can afford these things.
Debt.
Same here mine is a 2010 roadtrek I can’t afford any newer
Easy. Sign here and there. So much once a month for the next 84 months. 😅😂😂
Some guys work their butts off for 40-50 years. Save and invest.

And skip the fancy cars, clothes, and jewelry.
@@larryh5759 That’s why we have healthy portfolios. I enjoy looking, I can buy most any truck, which is satisfying enough.
Oh wait you basically said what I did. Oops. Didn’t get that far at the time of writing. Its good to know that though.
I have a '22 f450 with adaptive steering, everyone that ever ridden in my truck or drove my truck says it rides and drives like a Cadillac. Adaptive steering is a real game changer. I own a 350 and a 450 and the 450 beats the brakes off of the 350 in every way
The f450 is kept artificial lower at 14000 GVWR to keep it from being a commercial vehicle
Great info I am a Ford guy so you know what I think but as far as making a change down the on RV never say never but Ford is the best in my opinion
4:10’s in a gas motor will turn some crazy RPM’s and will get some not so good fuel mileage!
Like your videos. Check on a F350 dually. Payload is 500 lbs more than the 450.
@@RT-fy7gt I'm glad your set-up works!
Hey…….. is not fair you to compare RAM 3500 with Ford F 450. Anyway, we had enjoying the time with you thanks 🙏 and keep it up 👍
My F450 and 2022 Arctic Fox 1150 work well together. No mods needed. Camper weighs 5300 lbs.
How can you compare a 450 to 350 go and get a 450 dodge I know they don’t come with beds but that can be fixed.
if you have the F450, I’ve read that you should not drive on a sandy beach unless you want to get towed out. The tires can’t be deflated to ride on the sand. The F450 has a really nice turn ratio that others can only dream about!
This makes a lot of sense, I actually never thought about how poorly a 450 would perform in sand but those tires would dig right in
Thanks for the advice, I've already replaced my tires with some Toyo AT3's. You made some good points. Thanks for watching!
what happened to the old felling wedge vs the expensive set on overload?
The ram should get slightly better fuel economy ..it has two less cylinders and less power and torque.
@@skoffco ram had more torque for 2022...
@@jfletcher4949 I am planning on trying the 255/85-17 next. Same width but about an inch taller. I'm hopeful I won't have to add a leveling kit.
Sounds like you got a lot of fun toys. Your F350 7.3L sounds awesome and I’m sure your Lance 1161 is too. Safe travels!
I would keep the ram exhaust brake makes the difference for the larger brakes on 450
Which one is better ram or ford
You take theGMC transmission (Duramax)with Cummins engine put them in the Ford best suspension and you will be happy.
You cant be serious..
Concur 100%!!!!!!!
8 out of 10 hotshots are RAMs for a reason.
If it is not broken don't fix it. Every year new trucks come out.(2021,22,23 ect) When they do you are going to want those too.
Ford chassis, Cummins engine, and Alison transmission = The Perfect Truck
Perfect I like it! Thanks for watching!
as a truck mechanic and sick of repairing Fords, I would keep the Ram.
The stroke is a joke 200 more parts and have to pull cab to change turbo not good. You have the best .
I saw your Lance for sale on the rvtrader. What is your next move ? Are you staying with truck campers ?
Yes, stay tuned and thanks for watching!
~ Todd
You'll be sad to know the "Allison" transmission is actually just a rebranded version of the same transmission in the Ford
@@matthewschiebout7384 the transmmision in the ford is a E-40D which is completely ford. Allison is brand specific.
Stay with the ram and upgrade the tires you won’t regret it
Which Pickup has the better Power? Thanks
The Ram is plenty of truck for what you are doing.
I’m a ram guy but honestly on a trip the 450 is a better truck.
Ford may have some nice bells & whistles but you won’t find another truck engine & transmission that will compare to your ram.
Do you like torklift stable loads? If so do you like upper or lower or both?
I have never used the stable loads but I've heard they work well. Thanks for watching!
Todd, I’m checking out a “lightly” used Lance Bumper pull in a few days. Any advice on things to check?
~ Todd
@@RunawayRoses thank you, Todd. I’ll let you know how it goes.
Stay with the Ram.
When you have to pull the cab to change spark plugs on that Ford diesel.
The f-450 is on a whole new level from any 1ton.🇺🇸
Er'body knows the Cummins/Aisin is the best combo. F O R D is huffed at 250K.
You can’t afford the insurance for a 450 or 550 that sucked in Missouri insurance is the same as a 1/2 ton !
RAM
Just got a 2012 3500 ram no Def.
Curious why your are trying to compare a Ram 3500 to a Ford 4500. Just my outlook. The Ford having that 1 1/2 inch will allow your camper more room to slide around or shift in the bed even with your tie downs. Just a thought
With its below payload capacity compared to the Ram I don't know why he bothered either.
Bigger tires requier bigger brakes.
F450 gets my vote.
And if you have to work on a Ford diesel you have to pull the cab and that alone is a good enough reason to run and not look back and all the extra parts you need because it’s a 8 cylinder run and don’t look back !!!
Your 3500 ram Excellent truck 🤔 But the f450 might not have the gvw bed weight put 29,000 lbs behind your Ram W/truck camper see what happens
The F450 is a towing monster depending on gears
I own a 2013 F450 4wd crew cab [ true cab chassis DERATED 6.7 330/660 4:88 Gear ratio I can max my payload out at 6000lb and still tow 32,000 no PROBLEMS
Your Ram is a better truck than the Ford for the payload…..I have the same truck and I choose it for the payload……as for tires stay with the factory size…..when you go to larger rims the sidewall of the tire gets smaller unless you go to a taller tires……but then your truck will be taller (beinpg able to get the camper in your garage)…..smaller sidewalls will also give a rougher ride…..check out the Falken tires…….they ride good and no road tire noise!…..I have the Falken Wildpeak A/T3W tires…… already have more miles on them then on the stock Nexen tires……I went with the stock size and rating on them……so my payload rating and truck height stayed the same…….way cheaper for tires rather then wheels and tires…..save you over 3k for just tires (7 tires)
keep the RAM, larger ccc, best diesel in the world---------NUF SAID
What height garage doors do you have?
12' 1". Thanks for watching!
@@RunawayRoses can you back the truck in with the camper on?
Yes we can, it makes things much easier.
You gonna buy a Denali HD once the tires wear out on the F450?
