  • We built our overland truck camper on a singled-out flatbed Ram 5500 because a one-ton truck just wasn't big enough. In this video, we take a deeper look at our Ram 5500 truck and share the differences you will find between the two truck types.

    I wish people would please STOP confusing medium duty trucks and Commercial vehicles. 'Medium Duty' is just a weight class. 'Commercial' means you use it to generate taxable revenue. Very small cars are often used as 'Commercial' vehicles by Taxi services, and 1/2 ton pickups can be 'military' vehicles. Full sized buses and Heavy duty Semi trucks are used as 'Recitational Vehicles'. Please stop confusing 'Weight Class' and 'Commercial' use. They are totally separate classifications. I have a 5500, and it is registered and insured as a Private vehicle, as I use it to tow my RV.

    • @MortonsontheMove
      @MortonsontheMove  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      You do have a good point, but I could not find private insurance that would cover the truck... I get what you are saying but in the many states eyes this is a "commercial" vehicle. Yes we could get it registered as an RV but it would have been messy.... This according to Florida and my insurance it's still a commercial truck. Twice we had to pay high tolls because it was a "commercial vehicle"...even tho we told them it was private. Seems pretty stupid because there are 50k lbs RVs running around that don't have to do that BS.

      I think that depends on the state. California is very aggressive about… well… everything, especially where they can get extra revenue.

    The 2021 Ram 5500 cab and chassis has a recall for a rod going through the block problem. It’s a software issue, the engine runs a lower oil pressure at startup to speed up warm up. This resulted in burning up the rod bearings. Yes crazy but true. The good news is they can just reflash the truck, bad news is you don’t know what damage has already been done.

  • @petehaidinyak9084

    I have a RAM 5500 CA84 with a Knapheide flatbed and a Eagle Cap 1165 camper. The problem with flatbeds is they are designed for downward pressure and not upward. I talked with Knapheide and several other flatbed manufactures about the best way to tie down a 6000 pound camper and they all said that they don't recommend tying the camper to the flatbed because in rare conditions you can have a large upward force on the flatbed. My solution was to used an 8ft H-Beam and two 24 inch u-bolts that go around the frame and tie to the H-Beam which is on the top of the flatbed. I then put very large D-Rings on the H-Beam to tie down the front of the camper. For the rear I used a square steel tube the same size as a TorkLift tiedown and tied that into the rear hitch setup. That way I can use my TorkLift tiedown inserts for the rear of the camper. In the future I plan to weld together a setup I can bolt to the frame that will sit under the flatbed. Since I have an 11ft bed you still need something on the bed to keep the camper from sliding forward in a sudden stop. The H-Beam is currently doing that and I figure something out when I modify the setup in the future. With an 11ft bed I have room in the front for a Honda 3000i generator and another fuel tank.

    • @defekticon
      @defekticon 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      There are not a lot of flatbed choices out there unless you buy the flatbed that the flatbed camper manufacturer sells. At the end the day cost wise you're looking at orders of magnitude more expensive. So what do you do? You put tool boxes on the fender cutouts and use the space effectively.

    • @ericl5973
      @ericl5973 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      You can see the EGR has a block off plate so some of the emissions have already been removed if not all.

    • @MrChadx1
      @MrChadx1 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@defekticon I'll note that you do not have the buy the flatbed that the flatbed manufactures use. A flatbed camper can go on any flatbed that is rated for the weight. It may just need modifications to account for the type of tie downs that the specific flatbed camper manufacturer uses. Have not run into a flatbed camper manufacturer that won't sell only the camper; they don't force to you to also buy their flatbed.

    • @defekticon
      @defekticon 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@MrChadx1 I've spent a lot of time researching this. The problem you run into with that approach is that the deck height of the flatbed is incorrect to fit the cab over portion of the camper. Generally speaking commercial flatbeds that are not designed for flatbeds have headache racks, and the purpose built ones do not. That's generally where the fitment issues come in. Either the camper will really high up, or won't clear the cab. So it's not just a weight problem.

    • @MrChadx1
      @MrChadx1 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@defekticon That makes sense. I interpreted your previous comment as the manufacturers wouldn't sell you the flatbed camper if you had another manufactures flatbed and now understand you were just talking from a clearance and fitment perspective. Good clarification.
      I agree the commercial flatbeds can throw a wrench in the works on fitment. From my perspective, I was thinking more from sourcing a flatbed from one manufacturer that you prefer (like sherptek) and using it with a flatbed camper from a different company that also sells a flatbed from a different manufacturer (like FWC) or builds their own flatbed (like Overland Explorer Vehicles). That would be if one was sourcing the flatbed yourself vs using a commercial setup. In any case, like you say, it will take some calculations to ensure fitment is acceptable.

      Bullshit. Only way you're getting those mpg numbers is if you are going 50-55 mph on flat ground. I've driven 50k miles with my 3500 ram g56 deleted with my TC and 20k without. Never have I ever seen 25mpg. Best I ever saw was 23.5 doing 60mph in very special circumstances over 250 miles.
      Best I ever saw with the TC was 16 for a couple hundred miles going 55. 70 mph average 13-14 in ideal conditions.
      No need to lie about mpg numbers. I dont get why people think it's a thing worth lying over.

    Love the truck and the idea. However this truck is still highly modified. I though the idea of getting a 4500/5000 is that it's all ready to go, no need to modify to carry the weight of a large truck camper and supplies. If I have to modify the 4500/5500, might as well just modify my 3500 and save money no?

    Tom, I noticed you are running synthetic winch line with a cable fairlead. As an off-road guy with plenty of winch pulls, I would strongly recommend either switching to wire rope (cable) or switching your fairlead from a roller model (designed for wire rope) to a hawse type fairlead.
    I won't get into the endless debate over synthetic versus wire rope :) but I will say you run the risk of your current fairlead shredding your synthetic line, which could then fail under load.
    Overall, an awesome rig, and I totally understand why you elected to go with a heavier-duty platform for this particular application. Happy travels!

    On an F-350 you can swap axles from a 450 or 550 Pickup (Not cab/chassis - but models that came with a regular dually bed). Solid axle swaps are all bolt on, no welding or cutting required. Dunno about the dodge or chevy stuff. One of the reasons I love the ford, they kept the trucks very similar between truck series. Kinda of the best of both worlds. Power rating of the Light duty, axles from an MDT.

    • @StarGateSG7

      It doesn't have to be! You can also get from GovPlanet auctions ex-military 2.5 tonne trucks or even a 5-tonne truck that will ALSO work for off-road/boondocking/overlanding purposes. Those can be had for as low as $30,000 USD and have low miles needing just some suspension parts replacements and new tires which will run you about $10,000 USD.
      If you have some welding/construction skills, you can build it out FULLY LOADED with some used/surplus camper-top gear for another $10,000 to $20,000 USD so up to $60,000 USD fully loaded with everything you want for long-term offroad living!
