    Super cool. It is sad that there are so few younger fly fishermen in the UK in particular, and Dave is right in saying that in many other countries like the States and even South Africa, where I'm from originally, fly fishing is only growing amongst the younger crowds. I always get surprised people when I go fly fishing on a free stretch of river for coarse fish, mainly because most people are shocked you can even catch coarse fish on the fly. So I think the general lack of knowledge about fly fishing is a big factor as well. I think the big brands and fly shops need to push saltwater fly and coarse fish on fly a bit more as most of them are solely based on 'game fish'. Hopefully it starts growing in this country at some point then.

      I'd say my mission is to expose this type of flyfishing as much as I can. Not everywhere in the UK has cheap accessible fishing for salmonids... coarse fish have to be the future. Great comment btw.

    I live in the UK and I have recently started with fly fishing. It's not been easy and I still find the method much more difficult than lure or float fishing, but there is nothing like watching a dry fly getting swallowed by a fish. Since I started with fly I barely touched my spinning rod and I love it.
    I dont think being kitted up and "looking cool" is the main thing, I never cared for it; but there's a big cloud of mystery and almost witchcraft associated with fly fishing. It's potrayed as something very difficult and technical, and I understand how that can be offputting to people that dont know any fly fishers personally.
    There's also a lot of gatekeeping, holier than thou and similar attitude among fly fishers - bashing indicators, bashing anything but dry flies, bashing targeting coarse fish etc.

    It's not just about investing in a fly rod and reel etc, you then have to master the casting and know what flies to use and how to present them etc. That's why more people tend to go for bait fishing, or go with lure tackle on the types of venues you are talking about

    You have definitely renewed my interest in coarse fishing. Tell me, I notice you have a coloured piece of line for an indicator. Would you use conventional trout indicators for this style of fishing?

    I still have no clue where I can flyfish in and around London for free, all rivers seem to be paid for

    • @flyfishinglondoner
      @flyfishinglondoner  ปีที่แล้ว +4

      It's the opposite, most streams and rivers are free. Colne, Cray, Wandle, Pinn, Roding are all free or are mostly free. And they're just five I've picked randomly.
