- I seldom have a piece of wood that would make a good closed form. Of these two, I chose one and then decided on the shape. I'm very please with the outcome. What's your guess? Finished in Feed & Wax.

I really appreciate your wholesomeness. The "boring" dad joke. The talking about the weather. The talking about what you're having for dinner. The "I hope the power doesn't go out, 'cause I wanna watch TV" And your intro with the "Howdy" on the end. Always love your videos.
I appreciate that, Jimminy! Wow, you are really paying attention! Thank you so much! 😊
The grains, the colors, but mostly that crack! A winning piece. Love how you worked that crack till it was the star of the show.
I'm so glad, thank you! 😊
Peek-a-boo i see that light. That little bowl has so much character Phil just like you!😂
Thanks, Kid! 😃
Another Masterpiece from the Anderson stable. Absolutely Brilliant, Phil.
Thank you, Cliff! 😃
I knew which one you were going to pick. Thanks Phil for another Thursday night. Just a beauty. See you next week
😃
Another absolutely amazing piece. The knot makes a cat and that crack is just beautiful. We love it!
😊
love all the character this piece has. makes me think of sunny autumn walk in the forest.
😃
Oh! The lighting of the crack on the turntable?!? Woah!
Amazing work!
Thanks, Kell! 😃
Kind of like the head of the kat on the Knott. Another great job Phil! God Bless you sir.
A lot of people saw the cat, Bob! 😃
Closed form maybe I think it is a beautiful bowlvas. Yes you created a new word. Love the shapes and forms you come up with. Have a great week Phil. Dan
Thanks a lot, Dan! 😊
In Australia we call this kind of wood "Binna", binna tree but now it's wood! A very pretty piece Phil, thank you once again for sharing.
Interesting, thanks, John! 😃
Love all the imperfections, makes it unique. We'll done again
😃
Butternut,butternut, ahhhhh.still awesome. Beautiful
😃
No matter which way you look at it, it's cool and unique. Nice colors and the grain is cool. Stay dry and warm Phil.
Thanks, Bryan! 😊
The crack is magnificent. Lighted on a shelf would be perfect!
😃
Hi Phil
Beautifull hollow form it stayed together even with that big crack great job
Thanks David and Maria
Gad you two like it, thank you! 😊
Beautiful piece. I noticed that the small knot has ears at the top. So much fun
It does! Thanks, Judith! 😊
Good evening, Phil.
I love it! Glad you chose that piece to turn this time. Hollowing takes a lot of time the way it looks. I think I might be ready to give it a try. You did a great job of showing how it's done. A beautiful piece for sure. Your evening meal sounded good. Stay warm my friend.
It does take some time and patience, Ray. Slow and easy, don't get too aggressive and you will be fine. Thank you! 😊
Phil. One word beautiful. And I love the light in it showing the cracks
😃
Great result, Phil. The see-through crack makes the piece.
😃
I don’t know how many times I have heard the “boring” until it got it today. 😂😂😂 really sneaky that one!
Haha, thanks for the chuckle, Sam! 😊
Very nice, Phil!
Now all you need is a flute and a Cobra! 😁
LOL! Yup, I really need a Cobra slithering around here! 😃
The before and after, wow.
Good eye Phil.
I love the cockeyed smile it has.
💜🙏
Thank you, Beth! 😃
Perfect Phil i love to turn like you with cracks and bark .. Gives the job character.
😃
🙋♂️🏴 Hi Phil I think I would call it a vase, and it's my favourite piece so far, fantastic colour, grain pattern and shape. I imagine it feels brilliant when cupped in your hands. Got no idea of the wood but it's beautiful. Thanks Phil.
It really does feel great, John, though kind of hard to hold because it's so slippery! 😃
This last one did turn out so very well I liked the other one you did you didn’t ruin it I liked that one too you are truly an artist at the lath Phil ❤
Than you kindly, Wendy! 😃
A lovely, graceful form that fits the piece, very well. Congratulations.
Thank you very much! 😊
Beautiful! I like the Siamese cat side!
I'm glad you didn't get flooded. It rained like crazy here in Seattle!
Haven't seen that much rain in years, Judy! 😃
Wow that looks so cool Phil. Before I forget at the bottom of the crack it looks like there. I can see the ears and the shape of its face.
Ok now back to the piece. Speaking of the cat and the crack the crack is my favorite part. Although it all looks amazing.
Way to keep the nature in a piece of ????? wood.
Great job my friend,
Gary
Thank you, Gary! Seems lots of people see the cat! 😃
I agree papa, definitely a cars face.
Cats face
Waaaaaaouuu. So perdy, Phil! The top reminds me of vases from the 1st century (though not as tall). Trez joli. Very pretty. We have meringue-like snow cover on the branches here. Wish I could post a pic of the view I have at the moment. Winter-wonderland. Was watching ELVIS on Netflix, but paused to watch your video. Can you hear Elvis singing Oh Little Town of Bethlehem... ? I have it playing on TH-cam Elvis would be turning 89 in January. I wonder what he'd say about the world today...
Have a great week, Phil.
⛸🎄☃
Love me some Elvis, Red! I got to see him in concert in 1970. My very first concert and it was a doozy! 😃
Another beauty! Love that you left the knot and the crack. Thanks for another inspiring video.
Thanks, Doug! 😊
And I don't even think it was a mess up...lol I liked it.
😃
Hi 👋, Phil from Phil , that sure is a great looking 👀 piece, it looks like there is a red squirrel when you look at the side where the crack is, it’s a lovely piece of art, i’m not sure whether I said last week, but I’ve made a very very long and large scraper. Come boring to, I should be able to hollow out at least 24 to 30 inches in depth, this could be exciting, but very very dangerous 😂,
Keep up the great work. Stay safe. , I hope you’re keeping well, And it sounds like you’ve got winter setting in like what I’ve got here, no snow, but plenty of rain, Phil from the moulin,
That does sound dangerous without the aid of some other mechanical device. Careful, Phil! 😃
Another lovely bowl, Phil. Toni and I both spotted the 🐱 at the same time. Best wishes always.
Much appreciated! 😃
I vote for mulberry. I've turned mulberry bowls and kitchen spoon holders that look just like that. Nice job.
😃
Love it! Another beauty!!! If the knot ever comes loose and you lose it in a future bowl turning, you can call it a knitter’s bowl. Knitters use the hole to feed the yarn through which helps to prevent the balled yarn from tangling as they knit. 😁
Great idea! 😃
Great shape and love the contrasting colours, crack and knots, well done Phil.
All the best to you.
Regards Jim
Thank you, Jim! 😊
Hey Phil. I have been turning mushrooms, twig pots, mice with leather ears and tails ( mostly craft items) and handles for tools. I'm a disabled veteran taking on hobbies. I just want to let you know that i really enjoy your videos. Trying to keep up with your passed vids keeps me busy.
Busy is good, Gerard! I really appreciate the time you spend with me, thank you so much! 😊
I love the fact that you leave your pieces natural, I absolutely love the grain on this one, beautiful work as always Phil
Me too, thank you! 😃
From fire wood to art..excellent phil
😃
Ooh that's a gorgeous piece Phil, I shall have a look through the comments to see if it was mulberry or not. Definitely got your mojo back with this one. 👍👏
Haha, thank you, Jude! 😊
Phil, hi.
Good morning from Far North Queensland.
I love this piece and can just about see an animal face in the wood!
I love your videos, so thank you for the inspiration.
Cheers, Carol 😊
Awesome! Thank you, Carol! 😊
Really nice, Phil. I can’t say which is my favorite view because I like all of them.
Bill
😃
Beautiful work Phil, as usual! Again showing us how hard work and patience ( all the work on that crack) pays off and end up with a gorgeous piece. Thanks for sharing Phil 😊
Thank you, Guy! 😊
Another beautiful piece. Well done. ❤ 👍👍👍
Thank you so much 😀
Oh my, what a unique and lovely piece! Who can pick a favorite view on a piece like that?
😃
Another beauty of a bowl and to me it looks happy with a big grin on it, well done and thanks!
Cheers Al
😃
That is a very interesting grain pattern along the crack. It looks like a cut that didn't heal. Love the incloseded rim too.
Thank you so much, Sue! 😊
There are lots of images and contrasts to allow my imagination to wander and explore. I like the crack and the colors surrounding it. You never disappoint your fans. I’m sure the wood piece speaks to you about what it would like to be in the end.🎉
This one sure did, Betsy. Thank you! 😃
Another stunning piece... I love the illusion of cat ears by the crack
Cool, thanks, Victoria! 😃
That's a lovely piece Phil! Wonderful grain and l love, love, love the Crack!
Thank you, Karen! 😊
I think this is my favourite too, it's gorgeous. I see a Siamese cat in that knot.
You have lots of company for the cat, Heather! 😊
That is gorgeous! You did it again! I see a German Shepherd face by the crack.😊😊
😃
Hi Phil I think any view of this piece is beautiful. I still don't think you ruined the piece last week, I liked it anyway.
Take care bud
Bob
😃
Again, you have done a great job Phil. I enjoy your videos. Keep it up.
Thanks, Paul, will do! 😊
Looks like mulberry..real nice...knot side is awesome. Shap is awesome as well, love the lip..
Cool, thank you! 😊
Tea in the morning Phil
😃
Beautiful. I think the shape is perfect. Thanks again for sharing with your TH-cam family
😃
Grea turning Phil I see two eyes with a big smile😂
😃
I love the crack. Brilliant hollow form
Thank you, David! 😊
Hi Phil, A really beautiful piece, it looks like English Yew, probably not but certainly looks that way.
Thanks, Neil! 😃
Another very good learning experience for me Phil. I stopped the video and watched your piece on negative rake scrapers and learned even more. If only I would have enjoyed learning like this when I was in school, I might have amounted to something. Tsk tsk.
Haha, I'm right there with you, John! We should play when we are young and go to school when we are old! 😃
Phil what a great job there my friend it really turned out beautiful. Well done.
Thank you kindly, Alan! 😊
Wonderful Phil a true visionary! Bravo! ❤❤❤
Thank you, Marilyn! 😃
Very interesting grain and yes the contrast with light and darker wood makes for an eye catching piece, good job Phil. 😁
Thank you, Lewis! 😃
It's beautiful I would have bet good money that you have turned that piece first how could you resist all that natural beauty
You would have won, Ray! 😃
I think it's very pretty Phil. Good job buddy
Thanks, John! 😊
Incredibly beautiful wood, work and finish. I especially love the view with the crack. 🪵
😃
what a recovery from last week! gorgeous
😃
Beautiful turning Phil.
Thank you, Jack! 😊
Thank You Phil, Thank You Ted Helvig... I like the rounded over top. I know it creates more work for you when doing the inside having to use carbide offset hollowing gouge...Like those knots... Wonderful bowl Phil and until next time... TM
Thank you very much, Tuffy, I'm glad you like it! I don't mind a rounded top like this when it's smooth. It's the ones that have irregular, jagged edges that are just about impossible to sand and they want to grab my fingers! 😃
Phil, when I look at the knot and the crack on the right side l see a bat and the crack is his wing in flight. Also he has two bat ears coming out of the top of the knot. Thanks for the video I always appreciate your work. Scott
Quite the imagination there, Scott! 😃
What a gorgeous bowl...love the character!
Thank you, Carol! 😊
I've been watching or rewatching your videos with my 4.5 year old. She loves the "saw dust clouds" and always asks me why you're painting (applying finishes). She recognizes some of the tools you use, watching me in the basement.
Tonight, she was happy to see this transform into a "honey pot". Thank you Phil. ❤
I love this, Christopher, thank you! 😊
Lovely grain, fantastic colour contrasts, and the crack just makes it. The shape too is great - from quite early on I could see where it wanted to go and was just waiting and watching as you brought it out. As you say, it would have been a shame if that knot had come loose. Carole said she could almost feel the texture from the way the light played on it.
Thank you so much! 😊
Another piece of art Phil. The grain is lovely and using the feed n wax as the finish was nice. Just love the use of nature in all your work. Truly inspirational. Thanks
Many thanks, Colin! 😃
Top job Phil, love the natural crack side, it's a grand shape though, we hope you enjoyed your home made fish n chips, also hope the weather weren't to bad. All the best from -5 frosty Lincolnshire UK
😃
I know one thing for sure,I can’t pick a favorite side. If I had to choose it would have to be the crack,
A pleasure as always.😊
Good choice! Thanks, George! 😃
I think it's Mulberry too. Love the contrast between hard and sapwood
Thanks, Tim! 😃
Hello Phil, great job ' again " . Looks like Pecan to me. Take care, keep turning.
😃
Does not get better than that. Lovely piece!
😃
Nature is the greatest artist . . .
😃
I think the heart wood and sap wood contrast side is the best, or is it the darker wood with all the knots, or is it that beautiful CRACK you accented so beautifully. I really having a hard time to decide witch side I think is the best!!! I guess I will wait to make my decision until your next video, Or they all have so great features I may never be able to make a decision !!!! I may tell you someday!!!!!! KEP ON TURNING
You are really on your toes today, Howard! Great comment, thank you! 😊
Beautiful work , I think mulberry , maybe orange osage....love it ....😊
Thank you, Robert! 😊 Cheers!
A very, very nice small open hollow form! Beautiful wood with lovely grain.
Thank you very much, Dave! 😃
I've learned a lot by watching your videos. Amazing work!
Happy to hear that, Dana, thank you! 😊
Love the piece, great demonstration on hollow form. I’ve been looking forward to my first.
They are fun to do as long as you have an even top edge. When it's not, they are a pain to sand! 😊
I agree with the mulberry . Gorgeous piece , you got this one right on.
Thank you, Steve! 😃
That is beautiful Phil. So, so nice!
😃
Love it! The crack - beautiful! Thanks😊😊
😃
Hi Phil
I also selected the same piece when you asked to select 😊 .
Very pretty wood and turning as usual .
Thanks and regards
Great minds, right? 😃
That might be my new favorite.
Thanks, Greg! 😃
My wife and I really enjoy watching your videos, we relax after work before diner, you never disappoint with your finished piece.👍🏻
That is awesome! Thanks to both of you, I appreciate you spending some time with me! 😊
That's gorgeous Phil, absolute beauty that one :)
😃
An absolute beauty Phil! So very cool. Well done and take care.
Thank you! 😃
Very nice Phil. Love the crack and the knot!
😃
This piece has everything we hope to get from one of your turnings, excitement, light, and beauty.
Thank you, Margaret! 😊
An absolute beauty, Phil. The view through the crack is stunning! Wonderful work, Phil. Thanks for sharing!

Thank you, my friend! Hang in there and keep the positive attitude, buddy! 😃
