African Sumac Difficulties! 🙎 Wood Turning
ฝัง
- เผยแพร่เมื่อ 21 ก.พ. 2024
- This is a very hard wood. The bark is delicate, even though it doesn't look like it. What should have been a two day turning became three because of the difficulties I found along the way. Finished in Feed & Wax.

Well, this is very kind of you, Anthony, thank you so much! 😊
Very nice, Phil. You are like an old friend that I am yet to meet. I thoroughly enjoy your company every week. Thanks for the visit, again.
I feel exactly the same way! Well said.
Thank you so much, Hubert! 😊
And myself also
Phil is the kind of person you would like to have for a next door neighbor.
Do you realize how much you are admired? I have never read a comment about you that wasn't admirable or appreciative of your talent!!
You make people feel good!
Plus you make a piece of wood look its best!!
See you next week!!
Wow! Thank you, Colleen! I'm very appreciative of the kind words in these comments from my viewers, including yours. 😊
Phil, African Sumac is not toxic. The sumac shrub, sometimes called poison sumac is, but they are a different family. African Sumac is in the same family as cashew.
And you should be pleased with it. It came out very nice. It even looks soft on screen!
Cool, thanks, Billy! 😊
I too brush my teeth with Howard Feed and Wax. My teeth now have a brilliant glowing sheen that gets me so many compliments from other woodturners! But seriously, thank you, Phil, for another wonderful start to my weekend.
Haha, thanks, Perry! 😊
African Sumacs are all over the South West! Two in my backyard! Very nice! Thanks Phil!
Cool! 😊
Thank you Tuffy! That “smile could be the nose, with the mouth the dark area below, and crinkly smiling eyes! Nice turn! We cut maple burl today, will save you a piece!
I'll have to take another look to see if I see what you see, Valerie! Cool, thanks! 😊
Very lovely bowl. Looks like a kind of cartoon type eyes inside to go with the smile. Love it, spider and all. 💜
Haha, spiders are scary, Marge! 😊
I love it when you can keep your bark on, Woof!
😊
I love the variation of color. I see a snowman with a straw hat on the inside of the bowl. 😊
Love that! 😊
Great job, Phil. I am a huge fan of Feed n Wax. You are right it's such a "soft" look and feel. Excellent bowl. The wood is gorgeous, and you showcased it so well. Thank you for another great video.
Many thanks, Steve! 😊
That bowl is truly BEAUTIFUL Uncle Phil.. what beautiful colors on the outside.. and the inside isn't too shabby either.. you get 5 gold stars..
I'll take 'em! Thank you, I'm glad you like it! 😊
Hi Phil, Dan here. Beautiful bowl, worth the effort, for sure. Another dose of tonic for my recovery, look forward to seeing your videos. Thank you.
Thanks, Dan! 😊
When you started hollowing the bowl, I could see how dark the wood was. Really stunning
Thank you, Dave! 😃
I love the you don’t use epoxy like everyone else does. You love wood like I do. All natural
Yay for us, Marc! 😊
Feed n Wax, yaaayyy!!! Beautiful finish, beautiful piece!
😊
Wow Phil, this one is a peach. A pleasure as always.😊
Glad you enjoyed it 😊
Stunning! The grain is amazing in this piece. The hardwood actually looks soft after your expert hand.👍🙂
That's the way it feels, Ron! 😊
Hi 👋, Phil , great looking 👀 piece of art, with a smiley 😊 face too, 😂, from the moulin.
Thanks, Phil! 😊
Just in time for bedtime viewing! 🏴
Sleep well! After the video, that is! 😊
Phil, you tend to give yourself these challenges, but always seem to overcome them! As usual, a very lovely result. As one other has said, I really enjoy peering over your shoulder while you chat away about what you’re doing 😊 Cheers, Rick
The challenge is the fun of it, Rick. You probably know that. Thank you! 😊
The bowl is smiling back at you, well done
😊
Oooooooooh! Very nice, Phil! That non-shiny finish is perfect for this piece! I imagine it feels a little like suede. Sweet! 👍
😊
Hi Phil @huberthicks9080 expresses a feeling that most of your subscribers including me have about you and your videos. We all enjoy watching you and your
talent at bringing out the best in a piece of wood. Keep entertaining us!!
Take care Bob
Thank you so much, Bob! 😊
Running out of words to describe how much I love your work Phil, another fine piece of work, its such a shame you are so far away, i would love to spend a weekend with you making saw dust and talking rubbish, keep it up my friend 👌
Wouldn't that be fun! 😊
Teriffic! Neat to see these different woods, and thanks to Tuffy. Beautiful woood and a Teriffic turned piece!
Thank you, Joanna! 😊
Beautiful bowl....when I hear your comments on your temperature i feel so fortunate to have a heated shop.
You should, Gary! 😊
That was really hard work, the result has made your efforts worthwhile.
😊
I was surprised at how hard the wood is Phil. I could hear it with ever cut. I turned Staghorn Sumac it it is actually on the soft side.
I so that smiley face. I think he was so happy with the beauty you brought out of this one. The spiders as well.
Great job!
Gary
Beautiful bowl phil!
I think that bark was trying to tell you something! Lol
Thank you, Buddy! Yeah, it was hard! The bark gave me the most trouble, though. I should try to get used to round bowls, no bark.
Nah! That won't happen anytime soon! Hope you are back at it and feeling good, Gary! 😊
No bark...now that is not going to work. Plus it will not work with the song I wrote about you LOL
Doing good and am able to do some walking.
@@ThePapa1947 Good news, Gary! Song? Oh my, I shudder to think!
@@PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop I just need to get brave enough to sing lol. Maybe I will run it through an auto tune.
Beautiful bowl. Here in Arizona we grow African Sumac trees, due to their ability to grow with little water. ❤
Wonderful 😊
Another amazing live edge bowl from the master. Learning a lot from your techniques and approach. Love the spider hanging on to the side. Cheers Phil.
Awesome, thank you, Colin! 😊
Phil, watching your video's always makes my day. Love the way it came out.
😊
A lovely soft finish and a cute llittle smile! I worry when I don't see you for a long time.
Thank you, Kathleen! I've been here every week for at least a year! 😊
I'm willing to believe that it's just me being bubble headed!@@PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop
@@kathleenposton2334 LOL!
Thank You Phil... AH YES I DO REMEMBER .... (please try NOT to mix up those tooth brushes after dinner tonight Phil)...I like the hardness of African Sumac, of course easy for me to say just sitting here watching, ha...Yes, smiley face with one eye closed.. nice turning today and I look forward to next week Phil.....TM
Haha, I always bring my toothbrush back in at the end of the day, Tuffy! A quick rinse and she's good to go until next time! 😊
...oh that would be awful if he mixed them up...yuck! I bet he wouldn't make that mistake twice.
another SUMACULATE CONCEPTION!
LOL!
The reward was definitely worth the effort. Beautiful piece
Thank you, EM! 😊
Lots to see in the piece Phil this one deserves the smile emoji, mind I always send one anyway. 😁😎
Haha, thanks, Lewis! 😊
Lots of character for sure. We appreciate your work. 💕
Thank you, Vickie! 😊
That’s awesome the beeswax really made the color pop on the bark and the bowl as well. It’s fun to see the different varieties of wood you get to work with.
Thank you! Cheers! 😊
agreed
Oh boy that did turnout so beautiful look like children tracks or crow feet on the inside really nice to watch you make it and see the finished product 👍🏻❤️ way to go Phil
Thanks so much 😊
I really love listening to you explain what you're doing and why. Great teacher
Thank you, Scotty! 😊
I love the bowl Phil! The richness of the color and markings in the grain make this a beautiful piece. And I love the smile! As always I thoroughly enjoy your video. You are delightful to watch. I wish you would get a heat source! See you next week ❤
Thank you, Susanne, looking forward to seeing you! 😊
As always Phil Awesome piece of artwork. Happy turning my friend ☺️.
Thank you, Edward! 😊
Hi Phil, could you one of these days do a tutorial on the different tools you use and the difference between them? I know you always explain the tools you're using but would like to see them all in one video. Just a thought. Love to watch you create!
Great suggestion! 😊
Actually its quite beautiful wood, has much grain character. Glad to see someone turning wood. I got my wifes new trans today. So l get to start back on that. After working on the chicken pen lol. Hope to be back asap.
Sounds like work, Bobby! 😊
BEAUTIFUL grain wood and beautifully turned.
Thank you very much! 😊
Such a beautiful bowl! I was scared it was gonna fly apart with those big cracks in it but oh man! Very cool!
Thanks, Madonna! 😊
Just finishing another live bark edge cherry bowl. Your inspiration has me turning cracked, bark included, gorgeous pieces and I love the FeedNWax finish. Thank you, keep it up and my wife and I will keep watching! ❤
Wonderful! I'm so glad you are willing to try some of the more challenging pieces. They can be tough but oh so rewarding! Good for you! 😃
Phil that turned out really smart and colour in some way looks very soothing, well done.
Thank you, Alan! 😊
Eyes are sparking. Beautimous.
😊
Beautiful bowl Phil and a gorgeous piece of wood! Very well done!
Thank you, David! 😊
Gorgeous piece, Phil! That finish just looks warm and supple. Very nice.
Good way to describe that finish, Ryan, thanks! 😊
Beautiful bowl Phil. You are my inspiration in most all of the bowls I turn. I love they way the bark looks and the story the wood tells with all of the nicks and imperfections. It’s nature! I too see faces and things as I am turning down through the layers. I feel lucky when something shows in the last layer. Wonderful and uplifting, again. Hugs : )
Wow, thank you, Karen! 😃
Magic transformation. 👍👍👍
Thanks a lot, Steve! 😀
You can't believe everything you read, but then again, you probably shouldn't eat the shavings. Watching your videos is so much fun. How come we didn't get more tv shows like this back when TV was our only way to watch things? We were really missing out.
Feed 'n Wax does a great job with colors, especially deep reds. I think it brings the color out and maybe even gives it more contrast. It's definitely my favorite stuff.
I love it on Walnut, too, William. 😊
Sumac! Maybe I’ll need to try to find a hunk of this. It looks wonderful! Well done, Phil! ❤
😊
Well done. I see the worry lines around the eyes. Thank you for sharing
😊
Overall a very nice piece. I really like that you chose the Feed 'n Wax as a finish, the glow that it imparts is really nice. Definitely see the figures you pointed out. Thursday nights are always a treat with your videos,
Thanks a lot, Mark! 😊
You have done a beautiful job. I’m just an observer and watch others. You seem to really do a thorough job and your work shows it.
Thank you, GG! 😊
Beautiful work again Phil!!! The wood is so pretty. Have a great weekend. 🙂
😊
This is a nice bowl. The grain and finish is wonderful. There is a face 😃. I could tell by watching you and the sound this is HARD wood. The finish product is well worth the work, sharping and having to wear a glove!
Thanks for the show.
Joel
Thanks so much, Joel! 😊
Hi Phil, an absolutely lovely bowl .I followed your videos regularly and am always full of admiration for your work , thanks for the inspiration.
Thank you, Chris! 😊
Very nicely done Phil, smiley face indeed, really nice finish on it. Thanks for sharing.
All the best to you.
Regards Jim
Thank you, Jim! 😊
Another beautiful piece Phil! And I see the face! Well done and take care.
😊
Got my days mixed up and was looking for you yesterday evening and was getting a little concerned. Really happy when you showed up this evening ; ).
Great looking piece thanks for sticking with it through cold, flying bark and hard wood.
Keep on keeping on my friend!
Thanks for sticking with me, Bob! 😊
Very beautiful wood and the bark is such a rich color I love it
😊
Great job saving the bark Phil! Looks great.
😊
You have a two faced bowl there! The way you looked at it is one. If you see the 'mouth ' as a nose you have a different one! I love finding things in woodgrain and clouds.
That's what Valerie said, below! Interesting. Thanks, Kristi! 😊
That really turned out great. Glad you used the feed and wax really brings this piece out.
Thank you! 😊 Cheers!
Beautiful!!! It looks a little like starbursts on the inside, and 2 on the outside. WOW
😊
Pretty piece Phil, thanks for all the work you put to it.
I looked at the smiley face twice and second time the mouth was a nose and the smile was the darker section under it. 😃
That makes three of you so far, Jude! 😊
The face shows up. All the different colors and the knots makes it look interesting with the different designs. Came out amazing. Again Phil thanks for sharing with your TH-cam family
Thank you, Doug! 😊
Hi Phil - good to see you! This wood is beautiful and the face looks so happy 😊😊 top job young fella!
Thank you, Paully! 😊
Another lovely bowl in the books!
😊
The way you were handling the wood , it look heavy. I was surprised you didn't cut a little of these flat sides of first. Beautiful finish.
Thanks, Russ! 😊
Hi Phil. My last video before settling down for the night. It’s a lovely bowl. Talking about smiley faces, have you noticed my emoji? It’s from your little Ray of Sunshine 🌞
Yes I have! I love it, Ray!
Beautiful grain color variation on this piece. It is easy to call it pretty.
😊
Very nice looking bowl Phil. From what I understand about sumac, the smoke that comes from it when burnt in a fire is deadly. Thanks for sharing.
There are different types of sumac. Some not nice, some fine.
Lucky I'm a turner and not an arsonist, Scott! 😊
Fantastic! The way that scraper works, I need to obtain one. Feed n Wax looks great. Stay warm! ❤🔥
Thanks, you too! 😊
Howdy Phil from Lincolnshire UK 🇬🇧
😊
It’s always a pleasure to watch you bring out the beautiful personality of your differing woods. This piece is lovely.
Thank you, Susannah! 😊
Beautiful bowl, Phil. With all the sharpening it looked like a difficult turning but it looks like it was well worth it. Another great video, my friend.
Take care,
…..Gord
Thank you very much, Gord! Still sending prayers and all my best wishes, my friend. 😊
Beautiful! I love that semi-gloss finish on the bowl!
😊
Just plain pretty., Phil! I enjoyed watching you and the hard work paid off when you took the time to patch the bark. Barbara
Thank you, Barbara! 😊
Always look forward to visiting you in your shop on Thursdays.
Enjoyed watching you work again today.
Thanks, Michael! 😊
Face is a TMNT. It has the mask. Great work.
😊
Nice bowl, lots of nice color and I really like the bark, well done and thanks!
Cheers Al

The center looks like the Crown of Thorns.
Very nice Phil

Please let me know if you can see them.💜🙏
Spring is apon us, I could feel and smell it coming. March winds this last week here. 💜🙏
@@bmacdougall53 OH! I do, plain as day! Ah, Spring! I can hardly wait! Sunny here today but a little chilly, still.
Phil, just a suggestion on filling those cracks; instead of coffee grounds, try poppy seeds. They are small, round, hard and dense. They'll roll into any crack, filling up all nooks & crannies (even small cracks). should make a strong, forever repair.....
Thanks for the tip! 😊
Nice job Phil! That would look good on my breakfast bar with some fruit in it! Thanks Phil!
Sounds great, Brenda! 😊
the wax was a good choice. So much more natural looking.
😊
Man, the colors in the piece are just stunning! Phil, you make everything look so beautiful.
Thank you, Jane! 😊
It may be cold outside but you warm up the room when you turn. Beautiful bowl I am learning from the best on how to use extra bark and ca to make it look original. I now keep a bowl full of extra bark to glue on my turnings. Thanks for the idea 💡 KEEP ON TURNING
Awesome! Thank you! 😊
Beautiful bowl Phil, love that dark core, can't say it's pith wood as hard as it is, but it sure has beautiful accent. Very nice job, you are a craftsman for sure! Rick
Thank you, Rick! 😊
Love the smile! Great video fun to watch. Thanks
Glad you enjoyed it, Dianne, thank you for watching! 😊
Great job Phil. Love all the nature in this piece
😊
Awsome work I've learned so much from watching your videos keep em coming
Thank you, Michael, I'll do my best! 😊
Good evening Phil
😊
There are even “crows feet” by the eyes. Just like us old folks. 😂
😊
Fantastic Again. Thanks Phil.
