love your content , but their wardrobe reflected the 90's era greatly the more disheveled look the care free attitude if anything I think it says more about the characters that they don't need to impress through flashy clothes but everything hinged on their conversation, because when your too busy looking cleaned up and dressed in your 20's it takes away from the organic style of the movie. plus I loved the 90's style. the women imo in the 90's had more natural beauty than the colored up makeup mannequin looking women of today!!!

I really enjoyed your reaction to this lovely film. I also really liked his idea of a TV series that is an episode every day of a different person's life. When I was in my early 20s riding public transit, I'd often fantasize about asking random strangers if I could go home with them for the day and just observe what their lives were like for a day. I'd become almost overwhelmed with that desire. Years later, I still find myself wondering what would've happened had I asked. I think being a young disabled femme made me worry too much about my safety to actually follow through with it, but the desire is still there. I just want so badly to understand other humans better. I also have a fascination with storytelling, becoming a cinephile at a very young age and turning to photography to tell my own. Stories were my friends when I didn't have any. Anyway, I'm looking forward to watching you react to the other two films. Thanks for sharing your time and thoughts!

Richard Linklater, Ethan Hawke, and Julie Delpy rewrote and modified most the script as they were going along in order to make it feel the most natural, and I adore how well it turned out. You definitely should check out the next two films in the trilogy because it's more of this same beautiful symbiotic energy.

I’ve always classified myself as a ‘hopeful cynic.’ I believe in goodness & hope. I want to see the best in others & wish love, joy & good things upon everyone.
But all you have to do is spend a few minutes on twitter to know that very few people are running with kind of outlooks on life.
Being a cynic makes it a little more difficult to be quite so disappointed by the human race, though I am constantly in awe of all the things people do that baffle & dishearten me.

I can relate to the movie because I lived throughout Europe in my teens and early 20's in the early 90's and man let me tell you it was so awesome just traveling by train and meeting so many different people of cultures and backgrounds. people back then were so open to talk and just have a chat nowadays people are paranoid and won't talk so. much unless you're texting someone and that is just a sad depiction of how technology in some way is destroying the most simplest most organic thing....conversation and meeting people.

in my opinion this is a romance done right, its a rarity nowadays with dating sites which has sucked out all the spontaneity and wonderment in getting to know an individual. this movie is beautiful and spectacular at its core in the way that it shows the vulnerability of two people and the curiosity and attraction but all through just pure conversation, and we get to watch a romance grow in its most organic way, not tainted by technology; what you are witnessing is something that has become so archaic these days because of smart phones and that is the lost art of conversation. that's why I appreciate and love this movie because it brings me back to a time when people did things this way instead of dating sites which imo has really put a damper on romance as a whole.

This might be my favorite romantic film. The characters are in their early 20s here and the next one was filmed 9 years later when they are in their early 30s and then 9 years later is the 3rd with them in their 40s. It is just an amazing opus to take 18 years to film these actors to cover a romance in different stages of life.

As a long-time traveller, I agree with your not-staying-at-a-resort stance. The best tip I can give anyone who wants to travel the world by themselves is: avoid hotels and find a good hostel instead. If you don't like sharing the room and can afford it, a lot of hostels have private rooms available, and this isn't about travelling on the cheap. It's just that the experience on common areas is the best in hostels: everyone there has the same mindset of meeting new people and getting new experiences.

Maybe the best screenplay ever written. It's so benevolent. I feel like me after seeing this movie is a better person than I was before and that's a very rare and beautiful thing. Also I love that you noticed the depth of a normal conversation. I feel like when a character expresses some profound thought they're merely approximating the meaning behind it. A person who is speaking in more mundane terms tends to be more honest about the profundity behind their words. True depth tends to come from someone who isn't reaching for it. I like your description of it as a spiral.

    • @jackrussell3951
      @jackrussell3951 3 ปีที่แล้ว

I also had an experience very similar to this with an Israeli girl in Peru. That's what it's often like with those transient traveling relationships. There were definitely romantic feelings between the two of us that we never took to a physical place because we knew that our time together was impermanent. We're still in touch and I miss her every day.

Although all three of these movies are among my favorites, especially the first one which I am emotionally very attached to, I always thought Julie Delpy's lines in this first movie often came out feeling very scripted. What's in the script is nevertheless very truthful and authentic, so never bothered me much. I imagine the language barrier is what's the main cause of this, or maybe it's just me. Still love their relationship and all 3 of the movies though. Excellent choice, James!

I'm ngl, I went into this movie with great expectations and while I liked it, I wasn't able to find it as great as everyone. There's some beautiful moments, the acting and chemistry are good but the dialogue didn't stick the landing for me, I hate it when people use this word, but I did find it a little pretentious at times. To me at least it felt like the writers used Jesse like "oh yeah, I'm this 'intelligent' man who talks about weird and deep stuff that no one else talks about" and Celine is written as this ideal (for Jesse at least) woman who finds the stuff he says interesting.
I couldn't help but to think during a lot of parts "who the hell talks like that?". Where I'm from we would probably call Jesse a "mamador" lol. Idk, the movie felt to me like it was Ted Mosby's wet dream or something simmilar.

I had a girl I was head over heels for before this movie came out in theaters. I worked at a coffee shop and she was a customer. In quick conversations as she came and went, I managed to get my foot in the door.
Our first date was this movie. After it let out, around ten p.m. we walked around downtown. We spent the night talking and getting to know each other. We found hidden nooks in shadows and just enjoyed moments with each other. It was one of the most wonderful nights of my life.
Of course, life doesn't always work out the way you want it to. We went on a couple more dates but never really had the magic of the first night. We became passing ships soon after that.
But for one beautiful night, I got to watch this movie and live it afterwards.
    Great film!

This film ambushed me, twice. When it first came out, it felt so personal, so perfect - this was me, this was us, this was for all time and for right now, and it's ache would haunt me for the next 10 years. When I finally pushed it into the VCR, I was ready to be profoundly moved again like before...except this time I couldn't feel it. They were so young, their parting so pointless. Why hadn't I realized that the first time?
I wasn't there anymore. Still a great movie, but somehow when I wasn't watching I had officially become old. Never saw that coming.

I adore this trilogy of movies ♥ and your reaction ☺. Everything about these movies is amazing, the acting, the direction, the dialogue, the cinematography etc. Each of the movies is dialogue heavy so the main characters (Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpy) must have incredible memories. I love the fact that each movie seems real, they deal with issues and fears and the adaptability we all have within us to deal with them. At the same time, the movies take us all on an adventure, absorbing other cultures and ideas in a welcome fashion. In short, what's not to love about these movies. Well done all concerned 🎉 🥂 ♥ ☺.

Amy Lehrhaupt : The Girl who inspired Richard Linklater's Before Trilogy.
"She kind of echos through the Films. I always felt I could see her, like she would show up at a screening. When you make a film, you are in public quite a bit. You do screenings, festivals. I run into a lot of old friends, and I figured, just in my mind, 'I have a screening in Philadelphia; maybe she will be in New York..' and she never showed up. Even in the second film, I think that, in a way, works into the idea of the novel and it's sent of as a beacon, you know, in some way, what Jesse admits to, that was swirling around. And I don't want to exaggerate: it wasn't as intense of a relationship, obviously, as Celine and Jesse have; it was just something swirling around in my mind."
    - Richard Linklater, discussing the woman who inspired the story of his before trilogy. He met her in Philadelphia while travelling, and as he was only there for one night and they walked around the city together untill morning. Unlike in the movie, they exchanged phone numbers, but eventually lost touch.
Linklater shot Before Sunrise (1995) based on his night with Amy. Like Jesse in "Before Sunset." Linklater was secretly hoping that Amy had heard of the movie, and would show up at the premier, but she did not. When Before Sunset (2004) released, she did not show up either. It was until 2010, before Linklater started production on the second sequel Before Midnight (2013), that a friend of Amy, who knew about their story, contacted Linklater to tell him that Amy had died in a Motorcycle accident on May 9, 1994, at the age of 24, a few weeks before he started shooting of Before Sunrise (1995).
"That's why we always have to give our best selves to everyone because we don't know how we are going to influence people" - Richard Linklater.
P.S - Some unknown and unsaid words and Hidden Story as well as Mysteries has it's power and influence on other people to bring out the best from them.
No matter how much knowledge I share with you as per my life experiences but ultimately it's the Credibilty and Power of those Knowledge , Wisdom And Words which will Lives on forever in the life of other people and you will Live on Forver through them. And As Amy, Some people became immortal by the way they have lived their life even at the age of 24 and will lives on forever through Movies.

This is the only trilogy that I have only seen Before Sunrise, and I do not want to see the equally applauded sequels. I guess because it came out during my youth and held a special place in my heart. Since I am still single, I don’t want to ruin the magic of this film for me by viewing Before Sunset and Before Midnight. Those films continued the arc of these two characters that I have yet to experience.

the palm reader is an iconic Austrian actress called Ernie Mangold who also plays the lead in one of my favourite weird movies "die weltmaschine" (1981) which also was one of Christoph Waltz's first movies, if you're into strange foreign films I would REALLY recommend checking that out, don't know if it's that easy to find tho... or if it even has subtitles
I really love that Linklater used local actors for all of the supporting roles and had them speaking in dialect, it just adds so much to the vibe

18:44 100% i felt the same way. I got into filmmaking because i love peoppe watching and trying to learn who they are. Like thag feeling when you drive late at night in the highway and you see cars coming and going and you wonder where are they going? is it work? or maybe to catch an early flight to a vacation, or mayeb to a hopsital become someone closed got into an accident.

I'm a few years younger than the main characters in this trilogy and it just so happened that whenever I watched each of them for the first time my life was going through something similar and they just kicked my ass. Such well made, honest movies. The concept couldn't be simpler, but the execution is flawless.
