I’ve never been into Romantic movies, but this film just feels different and genuine. I can’t help but love it. It takes me back to the days of falling for someone, walking around Savannah all night talking and not wanting the night to end.
This movie is actually loosely based on an experience the director had with a woman in Philadelphia. He had hoped she had heard he was making a movie inspired by the day they spent together and would turn up at the premiere but she never showed up. He found out many years later that she had passed away in a motorcycle accident a few months before production on Before Sunrise began. In the credits of Before Midnight, there's a dedication to her.
From Cinemablend: It was revealed during the promotions for Before Midnight that Richard Linklater had based his initial film on an actual meeting. In 1989, he met a woman in a toy store in Philadelphia and, after he passed her a note that read that he was only in town for one night, they got to talking, and continued to do so late into the night. Linklater recalls that during this engaging conversation, he said to her “I want to make a film about this. Just this feeling.” And so he did, making Before Sunrise to capture the rush of meeting someone new. Linklater admitted to hoping that she would turn up at the world premiere, revealing that, like Jesse in writing This Time, he'd hope to capture her attention. Tragically, a friend of the real woman, Amy Lehrhaupt, got in touch to tell him that she had died in a motorcycle accident in 1994 before the release of Before Sunrise. Before Midnight is dedicated to Amy's memory.
I myself have had an experience like Ethan Hawke's character when sees his grandmother in the water. I never have seen a person who died I knew or even a ghost. I literally have see the Devil. I'm not crazy and I am definitely not making this up to sound cool. It scared the shit out of me. I was 13 years old and at a public park alone. I started out walking through the nature trail. Then all of a sudden everything stopped moving. I mean totally frozen in time except for myself. I was freaking out, yelling and screaming for help. Then I thought that I had either died or lost my mind. Then a dark figure appeared in the distance. The figure kept getting closer and closer to me. Not by running or power walking. It looked like it was gliding a few feet off the ground. The moment the dark figure got face to face with me. I was even more afraid than I was before. It's mouth never moved at any point. But I could hear it's voice in my head clear as a bell. It said to me in a very demonic voice "Do you know who I am". I replied "You are the Devil". It laughed hysterically at me. I thought then and there that I had for sure died and I was in Hell for all eternity. As the figure kept laughing all of a sudden it disappeared and everything in the park was moving again. Definitely one of worst things that I have ever had happen to me.
You're welcome! This first one was so great, and I'm excited for the next two. I''ll be waiting a little in between...but not 10 years like the movies came out. lol Thanks, for your comment!

@@AngelGroves Ha, it's true; it was excruciating waiting for the sequels! That's definitely worth seeing too. And you're welcome; I love that you choose movies that aren't reacted to as often. It's refreshing!
LIKEABLE couple ,no car chases ,violence or horror ,just 2 people walking and talking and becoming closer during one night together, beautiful romantic story.
The second and third films do not disappoint, Its like one big film with two ten year time jumps. I had seen Julie Delpy before this in the 1994 French/Polish film "Three Colors: White".
I'll definitely be watching the second and third! Ohhh, I'm glad you listed another movie of hers. It's fine if it's in subtitles, I'd like to check it out sometime. She's great.
One of the most captivating stories out there. Though it is a romance movie, I do love it as a story about human connection. Also, I find it amusing how you dressed like Celine while watching this lol
I agree. Their conversations were absolutely captivating and so genuine between the two of them. Also, yes, I tried to wear something similar, based off the cover. haha Thanks so much for your comment!
Ok I came upon your channel and just finished the reaction. IF I DON"T SEE "Before Sunset" by Angel Groves in this recommended list I'm gonna flip lol.
double checked the videos n what the ffuuuuh lol. How do you watch and react, and invest so emotionally into a film and not continue the series.. I mean I guess you have polls and such. hopefully ya come back to the trilogy one day, thanks for the reaction!
I love these characters so much, and I hope you watch the other movies. Before Sunset is my favourite, but Before Midnight feels the most real in terms of how life changes us over time.
31:20 start of the movie “I’m so scared of flying I can literally see the plane crashing” 😂 halfway through the night - “I’m not so scared of flying… I could” 🥰
I love this movie so much. I’m not the biggest romance movie fan. But this comes off as so genuine. A one of a kind movie. I could watch them together and never get bored
Fantastic movie. I am a sucker for romance. Those days or nights, we seldomly have, that we never want to end. You are a wonderful movie date Angel. Can't wait for "Before Sunset" review now.
Aw. Thank you, and thanks for watching, as always! I'm a sucker for a romance as well, even though, like I said, I don't typically go out of my way to choose one. Before Sunset will definitely be coming. I'm giving myself a little time between them, since everyone else had to wait 10 years between the movies. But I won't be waiting that long. :)
@@AngelGroves 10 years is a long time (even though you said five years goes by SO fast), how about in 6 months we'll meet again to watch Before Sunset, I know I will be there.
I sincerely loved your reaction to this. My younger sister asked me to video this for her, while she was on holiday. I was revising for professional exams and as it was starting about 1 am, I stayed up to ensure it videoed. So I began watching and was hooked from the opening music & train journey. When we were young, my sister & I would get the train in Dublin to an aunt and uncle in Galway (with a cousin to, well, babysit, I suppose) so a trains mean holidays for me. I had been to Bavaria for holidays the previous year and the Austrian scenery reminded me of the Bavarian countryside. Medieval history at university gave me a fierce interest in German & Austrian Kultur. I adored this film and the harpsichord scene always gets me. One other suggestion; if you liked 'You've Got Mail', have you watched Ernst Lubitsch's 'The Shop around the Corner' (1940), with Jimmy Stewart & Margaret Sullivan?
I love the short, touching moment of the two in the listening booth sneaking glances at each other but always turning away. You can see they already admire and love each other's company more than they thought they ever would. I also really like the next morning's montage of the places they wandered to. The locations all now empty but full of meaning for the two who spent time together in those places. We as viewers also know the meaning of those locations and the conversations that took place there.
I love this movie. One of my top 3 movies of all time. I saw this when it came out when I was a teenager. I traveled to Europe in my 20s, hoping that this movie would happen to me. Hope you react to the sequels. They are just as good.
Yesss, it's such a great movie! Oh, wow. That's awesome. I would have done the same, and traveled to Europe in my 20s, if able. That would have been terrific. I'll definitely be watching the sequels! Thanks for your comment!
Hi Angel! Great reaction. The Before Trilogy are three of my favorite films of all time. The dialogue just pops, the performances are authentic, making the films just feel all the more alive and real. I'm so excited for you to see Before Sunset and Before Midnight (where their love gets challenged like never before - a tough watch but also beautiful and hopeful).
Before Sunrise (1995) Angel, I have an admittedly insane idea, but if I don't ask you this it's just, uh, you know, it's gonna haunt me the rest of my life. Um... I want to keep giving you facts, y'know. I have no idea what your situation is, but, uh, but I feel like we have some kind of, uh, connection for random facts. Right? •So the idea for this film came from similar events in both director Richard Linklater and co-writer Kim Krizan's youth. Krizan rode around Europe on trains, meeting people from all over and while in Paris, met a man from Norway and ended up walking around the city all night with him. Similarly, Linklater once spent the entire night walking around Philadelphia with a woman he met by chance, named Amy. While Krizan swears she never saw the Norwegian man again, Linklater kept in touch for a while with Amy until one day she just disappeared and it wasn't until 2010 that he found out that she had passed away from an accident right before the release of Before Sunrise. •Linklater intentionally left out subtitles in the opening sequence with the couple arguing on the train but anyone who speaks German could translate their conversation easily, the gist of it is the man reads an article about how 70,000 women are addicted to alcohol and then relates to how his wife is easily one of the 70,000, she argues back that of the two, he is the alcoholic, to which he replies "I have a reason to do it. I'm married to you!" •Linklater spent 9 months on casting because he really wanted to find the right people to play Jesse and Céline and he had doubts about casting Ethan Hawke because he looked so young but after seeing him perform in a New York play, immediately offered him the role. Meanwhile for Céline, there were a few young actresses in the running including a young Jennifer Aniston and Gwyneth Paltrow before Julie Delpy snagged the role. •Throughout the film, there are numerous references to writer James Joyce and his classic novel "Ulysses": both stories take place on June 16th, running into the early hours of June 17th. Both involve a journey around a single City and a visit to a local graveyard and much like the author himself, James Joyce, Jesse spends a long time wandering around the cities of Europe instead of going home. •In the first scene, Céline is reading "Madam Edwarda/ Le Mort/Historia de l'oeil" by Georges Bataille while Jesse is reading "All I need is Love" by Klaus Kinski. •The Ferris wheel Jesse and Céline ride in Vienna is a real attraction called the "Wiener Riesenrad" or "Riesenrad" for short. It was constructed in 1897 and has been featured or shown in numerous films including 1949's The Third man, 1973's Scorpio and the 1987 James Bond action thriller, The Living Daylights. •Contrary to popular belief, the film and its sequels weren't improvised as many have been led to believe. Linklater, Hawke and Delpy have all stated that the dialogue was not only off the page but had numerous contributions from its actors for which they received co-writing credits on Before Sunset and Before Midnight but they do not have a co-writing credit for Before Sunrise due to Kim Krizan's refute that they didn't contribute on Before Sunrise. •The album that Jesse and Céline are listening to in the booth is "Come Here" by singer Kath Bloom. Linklater was a fan of hers and the attention Bloom received from the film inspired her to release new music. •The war that Céline was mentioned was the Croatian war of independence, which ran from 1991 to 1995 between Croatia and Serbia / Yugoslavia. •Before the sequels, people were wondering whether or not Jesse and Celine would ever run into each other again, Richard Linkletter said that the film as a whole is supposed to be a litmus test for how a person views Romance. If you are romantic at heart, you'd believe they would meet again. If you were a skeptic, you'd believe that they wouldn't and for the indecisive or inexperienced, you'd just be left wondering...
Brian, you ALWAYS start your comments off so freaking awesome. hahaha. Never fails! Perfect combination of referencing the movie and being a perfect opener. :) As always, I'll DM you on Patreon with my main long, long response and then back here. lol. THANK YOU, Brian!!!!!
one of my favorite movies, and i like the second one even better. looking forward to that reaction, i saw you reply saying you're waiting a bit. i couldn't do that, but i think that's smart. it makes you treasure it a bit more and giving yourself time between, it'll be like meeting old friends again when you delve into the second one, as it's meant to :)
Sigh, right??? I'll be waiting a few months (that's as long as I can)! hahaha I'm only waiting that long, since everyone else had to wait all those years! LOL
@@AngelGroves To be clear, I was just joking and would watch the next two tomorrow if you had them to put out for us. Personally I wouldn't wait if they were all released at once, so to speak.
This is my ultimate favorite romance movie of all time. It's just pure magic to me. The other two movies of the trilogy ("Before Sunset" and "Before Midnight") are also fantastic. I highly, HIGHLY recommend you watch and react to those as well. This trilogy is unlike anything else in movies. I've been to Vienna three times btw and it really is a gorgeous city. Love visiting the places that Celine and Jesse go to in the film. Last time I went to a couple of the Cafés seen in the movie and also to the Prater with the ferris wheel.
Same for me, this was the first romance movie I ever saw that didn't follow the tired formula of throwing in some big drama to separate the characters, and it was so refreshing and fascinating to just focus on the development of a realistic romantic relationship. Kudos to the filmmakers for having the courage and skill to make a movie like this happen!
You must watch it at Valentine's Day for sure, to feel the buttlerflies. These movies are just so incredible, so natural and actually romantic, it feels like it could be you who is having that experienced because those things happens, sometimes you feel connection with a stranger and then that's your significant other. Love your reaction, was so good and you really pay attention to them and how their personalities are, I love Jesse and Celine equally
Thank you for reacting to Before Sunrise. It's always lovely to see someone experience it for the first time. I don't watch a huge number of romantic movies but this trilogy is right up there in my mind. I love Somewhere in Time (1980) too, though as that has time travel I guess it's more a sci-fi/Romance mix, like The Terminator (1984)? For straight romance movies I tend to go further back to things like Brief Encounter (1945) or Casablanca (1942).
Actually, although they weren't credited, Ethan and Julie rewrote parts of the script with the director while they were shooting. And the following two movies are full collaborations between the director and the two actors. The three of them won an Oscar for the script for the second movie. They knocked that one out of the park, although I loved the first movie, I was floored by the second. (And yeah, of course the third one is great too, but by then it was expected).
I've read the original screenplay written by Richerd Linklater (the director) and his writing partner, Kim Krizan. There were quite a few changes made before the dialogue was put on film. Apparently, Hawk and Delpy weighed in at this point to work with the director to make the dialogue their own. That is why it feels so natural.
what makes this movie so much more amazing NOW IN THIS TIME!! is that no one doesn't have that kind of organic connection anymore. everything is so cold and shallow with dating sites what they are IMO HAS RUINED dating in a way that there are no surprises anymore. im glad to have been in my early 20's in the 90's the last real generation of SELF DISCOVERY AND REAL WORLD GROWTH!!! now we have this vapid, instant gratification, social media generation that just comes across stale and unoriginal.
Oh, perfect. I'll be doing the next in a few months (trying to wait some in between, to get more of the full experience), and maybe you can watch the next one then as well! Also, thank you, I'm happy you enjoyed the reaction, and thanks for your comment!
@@AngelGroves You're a lot more disciplined than me; after seeing the first one and finding out there was a sequel(the third one hadn't been made yet) I just had to watch it as soon as humanly possible to find out what happened! 😄
The fortune teller and what she said was very relevant to Celine's and Jesse's personal pain and relationship pain in the second and third film. The "milk shake" writer's prose was also important in the later films. In this first film of the Before Trilogy seemed to show Jesse's emotional wounds. Celine's emotional wounds surface more in the second and third film.
You should be that one movie reactor channel that watches everything on the criterion channel (only if you're an art house lover) But there's a lot of classic films that are very similar to Before Sunrise.
I had a Before Sunrise moment years ago and then a Before Sunset a few weeks ago, it was kinda hilarious 😂. Storytime: seven years ago, I met this girl in a party and we really had a great time talking about books, great/terrible adaptations, and stuff... But then our ages became the topic for a second: I was 21 and she was 14; I look younger, she looks older, so the confusion was understandable 😅. Anyway, I got upset, because we clicked so well, even with our shyness 😕... So we just took separated ways. And then, two weeks ago, I went out late to go to the market in a hurry and, boom, she was there, walking out of the house across the street! We were surprised by that and, after a few seconds, we found out that WE'VE BEEN NEIGHBORS OUR WHOLE LIVES 😳🙀!!! We've been going out/back during different times of the day, never encountering each other this whole time; if I didn't get distracted with my writing (published author here), we'd never meet again 🤗😅! Now that we're both adults (I'm 28, she's 21), we're seeing a day to go out and catch up, and, well, see where this can go; wish me luck, guys 😄🤗. Edit 01 (october 4th 2023): we have busy schedules (we're both in colleges, she has another extracurricular programs while I have books to write/edit), so we just had a few quick conversations here and there waiting for us to have a free time ^^. My most recent book, Trono de Rosas (Throne of Roses), was published last month, on september 15th, I gave her a copy of it, so we'll have a topic ready to go on a future date 🤗. Hahaha'. Final edit: one quick conversation, and we realized we're no longer the persons we liked back then. She's more serious and I'm more "what does this button do?", we had far different types now (now she prefers down-to-earth guys while I'm into eccentric and unique women that love different cultures to know about), so we took the decision of just keep that night from years ago in our hearts and live our lives separately. No Before Midnight for us 🤗😅.
@@santiagoaguilar792 We have busy schedules (we're both in colleges, she has another extracurricular programs while I have books to write/edit), so we just had a few quick conversations here and there while we keep the "let's go on a date as soon as we can" in mind ^^. Thank you for doing this reaction! I'm the same as you... Romance movies are not my favorite and this movie was recommended to me so many times but when I googled it, the promo poster was such a turn off lol the typical 90's romantic comedy type of poster... but! I'm glad I watch them because MY GOD, my mind was blown away. These films are brilliant in their own way.
for more Ethan Hawke, check out the scifi movie Predestination. very interesting time travel story that he is excellent in the ferris wheel they take a ride on was also used for one of cinema's all time great scenes in The Third Man
Oh nice, I'm always looking for more good Ethan Hawke movies, and I've also never seen The Third Man. I'll definitely have to check out both of those. Thanks!
Awwww, you never did return for Before Sunset, did you? At least, not here on your channel. I adore this entire series. The cinematography, the dialogue, the chemistry, the gentle, naturalistic flow of the whole thing....and, of course, the universal yearnings it reawakens in me. It's nearly perfect insofar as any film can be. When I'm asked about my favorite movie trilogies, I usually trot out much more cinematically ambitious fare: Lord of the Rings....or maybe the first three Alien movies with Back to the Future an honorable mention. But if I'm being completely honest, I may just love spending quiet time with Jesse and Celine even more than any of those franchises. I don't know - depends on mood, I suppose. And, yes, it's so easy to fall for Julie Delpy's Celine here - her easy manner, her accent, her thoughts on everything, and, certainly, her fresh, luminous beauty. If you actually haven't yet, I'd HIGHLY recommend watching both Before Sunset and Before Midnight.
I've been on the road all my life and my life is full of these experiences. I've fallen in love and had to leave those people behind all my life It's full of experiences like this for those of us that can't sit still. It's sad, but it's what we give to see everything.
Great reaction - I love the comment below referencing Joyce, Bataille, and Kinski; I need to process that - btw, if you like Shakespeare, why not do a Shakespeare movie reaction? Maybe Angelic Conversation from Jarman, based on the sonnets, or Macbeth w Fassbender, or Titus from Julie Taymor, or Much Ado from Branagh - anyway, re romantic movies, some favorites are Umbrellas of Cherbourg, In the Mood for Love, Casablanca, a Vertigo/La Jetee double bill, World of Apu, Before Trilogy, 2021 West Side Story, Piano, Philadelphia Story, Jules and Jim, 1946 Beauty and Beast, L' Atlante, 1927 Sunrise, and I agree w comment below about Eternal Sunshine and Her, and also The Fly
I can't wait for you to watch the sequels. They're just as good, if not better. However, to get the full experience of the story you should wait 9 years. lol jk
hahaha, I actually will be waiting a little in between, though I wanted to watch the next one immediately. I'm trying to give myself some of the experience of waiting, but yes, there's no way I'll be waiting as long as everyone else had to! Maybe a month. lol Thanks for your comment! I'm excited for the next ones! This one was incredible.
To those that are asking about the sequels, those on Patreon have convinced her to hold off for a bit in between each to let them digest. No time frame has been set, but I'll likely be pushing for Before Sunset (my favorite) in 4-6 months.
Those are terrific suggestions! Thank you! Wow, I had forgotten all about French Kiss. It's been so, so long. I haven't seen any of the others, though. Also, yes, I really enjoy watching great international/foreign films. Subtitles are fine with me! "Amelie" is a really great recommendation. Thanks, again, for your comment!
Good romance suggestions? Well that can mean anything from romcoms to real tear jerkers. Off the top or my head, two of my favorite romcoms that involve European travel are "French Kiss" with Meg Ryan and Kevin Kline, and "Only You" with Robert Downey Jr. and Marisa Tomei. Not sure how you feel about foreign movies and subtitles, but Jean Pierre Jeunet is a French director I love who did "Amelie", one of my top favorite movies, and then later did "A Very Long Engagement" which is a romance set during WW1. Both good choices, also another of my top favorites is an Italian film "Cinema Paradiso", which isn't just a romance, but is very romantic. My line is, that it's a movie about the three things in this world that any person truly needs to learn about and master in order to truly be complete as a person. Life, love, and movies!
Be sure to watch to Before Sunset and Before Midnight. This trilogy isn't bad at all. Basically because it's not bullshit. Just a realistic way of how people meet and get to know each other. The story is right to the point and nothing forced in the story either. I also like Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpy together as a couple. They both seem really believable together.
Don’t get me wrong, I love the cheesiness of some romance movies every now and then. But personally, my favorites are the more down to earth and somewhat complex films like this, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, and Her. The sequels of this movie are also well done but very different emotionally.
Thanks so much for your comment. I really loved it and agree with it a lot. I was JUST thinking of Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, for the first time in years. I haven't seen it in so long, and it's one of my favorites as well. I should do a re-watch for sure. I'm looking forward to watching the sequels to this one! Thanks, again, for watching and your comment!
The most romantic movie I have ever watched is a film called What Dreams May Come. If you watch that bring tissues. It absolutely will have you in tears with how beautiful it is.
I remember that movie staring Robin Williams, Annabella Sciorra and Cuba Gooding Jr. God do I miss Robin Williams. He was one of the absolute best actors ever. His range as an actor and comedian was boundless. I have to go on record and say that he is truly a legend.

double checked the videos n what the ffuuuuh lol.
I'm bummed out it's lookin' like we won't get your reactions to the full trilogy
The song in the music store is “Come Here” by Kath Bloom
I live a few blocks from the Cafe and Music Shop - they still look exactly the same
Yada yada yada... you rock. Couldn't click subscribe fast enough after that wonderful watch. Thank you for that.
Absolutely love this movie. Hope you finish the trilogy. Also recommend Reality Bites, The Waking Life, and Boyhood.
Definitely finishing the trilogy. :) Also, thanks for the suggestions! I haven't seen any of those.
Literally one of my all time favorite movies.
Before Sunrise (1995)
Angel, I have an admittedly insane idea, but if I don't ask you this it's just, uh, you know, it's gonna haunt me the rest of my life.
I'm married to you!"
•Linklater spent 9 months on casting because he really wanted to find the right people to play Jesse and Céline and he had doubts about casting Ethan Hawke because he looked so young but after seeing him perform in a New York play, immediately offered him the role.
To complete the experience, you have to wait nine years for the next movie to find out what happens after this.
Personally I wouldn't wait if they were all released at once, so to speak.
this was an absolute joy to watch with you. it's one of my all time favorite movies
you need to watch the second one asap !!!
I agree, Highlander is absolutely one of the best romance movies ever.
YESSS. :)
While this movie is the beginning of a trilogy, these characters actually appear in 4 Richard Linklater movies. They make a cameo in Waking Life.
Oh, that's awesome. Thanks for the info!
For straight romance movies I tend to go further back to things like Brief Encounter (1945) or Casablanca (1942).
cant wait for u to react to the next 2 💜
Actually, although they weren't credited, Ethan and Julie rewrote parts of the script with the director while they were shooting. And the following two movies are full collaborations between the director and the two actors. The three of them won an Oscar for the script for the second movie. They knocked that one out of the park, although I loved the first movie, I was floored by the second. (And yeah, of course the third one is great too, but by then it was expected).
Hope you watch the next two
the second part, before sunset is real good too. you have to watch it 💞
Hi. Another Groves here. I loved your review ❤
You CAN watch them again. React to Before Sunset and Before Midnight!
Great reaction 😎👍I got this movie a couple of years ago but have yet to get the entire trilogy. I'll keep my eye out for the other two 😀
Oh, perfect.
Great movie and great trilogy. I hope you’re gonna follow up with the other 2 movies, which are great
You should be that one movie reactor channel that watches everything on the criterion channel (only if you're an art house lover) But there's a lot of classic films that are very similar to Before Sunrise.
No Before Midnight for us 🤗😅.
what happened?

Great reaction! You really should react to the rest of the trilogy, it's a masterpiece. 💯
29:56 she forgets she’s on the phone…… then right at the end after she says “they kinda strange the little I know of them” he does the same thing 😮
Have you seen "Leon: the Professional" ? I would love to see you take that wild, wild ride.
Oh, nice. No! I haven't. Isn't Natalie Portman in that? One of the only things I know about it. I LOVE her.
for more Ethan Hawke, check out the scifi movie Predestination. very interesting time travel story that he is excellent in
the ferris wheel they take a ride on was also used for one of cinema's all time great scenes in The Third Man
Oh nice, I'm always looking for more good Ethan Hawke movies, and I've also never seen The Third Man.
@@AngelGroves Ooops, you typed this under the wrong comment ;)
When are you doing before sunset?
Life, love, and movies!
you are dressed like the main actress, that's cute:)
Did u notice how long the takes were?
Haha, I was actually going to look for reactions to Eternal Sunshine when I stumbled upon this video!
The ending of this movie messed me up. I don’t even like romance movies but this one was good.
You can just FEEL it. I love it! So good.

Question: do you think they slept together or not? 🤔
oh, ill have to catch you on the next one, ethan is on my shitlist.
You have to watch Before Sunset now. Please. I beg you.
Thanks for the suggestion! I know I've heard of that title, but nothing else. I appreciate it!
