I love this trilogy with my whole heart. the collaboration between Julia, Ethan, and Richard is so unique and the dialogue really shows how natural they were able to write it. I really hope you guys are curious enough about what happens next, that you don't wait too long before watching before sunset!!
I don’t know if you guys read your comments, but I do want to say that this wasn’t a planned trilogy. This movie stood on its own. So for 9 years, you are left wondering if they ever got together again. It was left ambiguous on purpose. You also have to understand what it was like in 1995. There were no cell phones, there was no internet or social media. You just have to trust that someone will show up when and where you agreed to meet.
Huh? Internet was a thing, and landlines with international reach were a thing. Cell phones existed in the 1970’s. Tons of people had cells in the mid 90’s. If you really truly wanted to keep in touch, you could do it.
@@SnailHatan internet in 1995 was dial up and most people didn’t use it. It was just nerds on there (I know cuz was one of them). Cell phones were those giant bricks and most people couldn’t even afford them. Cell phones didn’t become more common until late 90s. Most people didn’t have email unless you were in college. Definitely no social media and no smart phones.
@@SnailHatan Not many people were consistently online in 95. I only had email via the computer lab at my university, didn't own my own computer. International calling to Europe was roughly a dollar a minute (my brother had a girlfriend in London who had been an exchange student in the US for a year), and on a cell it would have been way more. So unless you had a lot of money it was much much harder to stay in touch. I was still writing letters to my friends until at least 1998.
@@SnailHatan Cell phones were available in the mid-1990's but didn't really become common until early 2000. For lots of people they were too expensive and hence were a status symbol. You'll notice that neither of them whipped out a cell phone in this movie. Emails didn't come into common usage for the general public until around 2000. (Yes, I had to look that one up. I did remember getting my first email account around 2002.)
@@SnailHatan In 95 noone but the richest of the rich had a cellphone. That change very few years later, but in 95, it wasn't a thing yet. And yes, internet existed, but noone but the most dedicated nerd had that at home yet. Could they've exchanged their landline numbers and called each other? Oh absolutely! But that wouldn't be half as romantic, would it?
Rob!!! It really is a poem. I believe you all will like Before Sunset even better. FYI Ethan and Julie wrote much of their own dialogue in all three films. The director called them partners on the project.
I cannot wait for you to watch the next one. Also, imagine not knowing there was going to be a second movie and being left there waiting for them to meet the following December for nine years !!! 😬👀
“Watching a poem”. Yes. Exactly. Or a play. It’s very much a filmed play more so then a movie. And so accurately captures what it’s like. When you meet someone, maybe at a party, or like this on a trip. You talk all night, and because it’s a stranger and you are outside your normal life/ routine, the conversation is different. More reflective, more big picture. More like writing in your journal. Anyone who’s experienced that knows what a lovely moment that is. A moment out of time, out of the everyday. And I think this movie captures the feeling so well. Which is why I’ve always loved it. I’m glad you guys liked it too . Really hope you watch the next in the series ❤️
a friend of mine met her boyfriend on a train in paris, she thought it was going to be a before sunrise situation because he had a different accent to her (she’s from NZ and he sounded english) only to find out that he actually moved to NZ when he was younger and they were on the same flight home! they’ve been together for like 6 years now life really is crazy sometimes ♡
The movie was inspired by a real life event in the director Richard Linklater’s life, in which he spent a night walking around talking with a woman he instantly hit it off with. And so what he wanted to do was to make a movie about those rare moments of true connection. I recommend you watch the remaining movies in the trilogy as soon as possible. Especially the second one, Before Sunset, is insanely great. Truly one of the best sequels in movie history.
I just hope we don't have to wait 9 years for your reaction to Before Sunset. 😜 Seriously- I really enjoyed your reaction to this beautiful movie and can't wait to see what you think of the other two amazing films. Each film is such an important chapter in Jesse and Céline's profound love story. Also, I would love to see you all react to the Oscar winning 'Boyhood', another amazing Linklater/Hawke collab filmed over 12 years. 😘
One of my favorite romance movies. So happy to see younger generations discovering it 😊 I graduated high school in ‘95. So this movie was really relevant to my early journey at finding love
I was 18 when I first saw this movie. I'm 40 now, and through the years, I found each film resonating with me more the closer I was to their ages in each film. I just deleted a full novel as a comment because it was all just to say, essentially, that these films are like time capsules, and you can view them the way you view your own life. As you get older, you'll connect to them differently, and when you're in your 40s, you can look back at this first film like you're looking back at the you that you were when you were in your early 20s - the good and the bad. Can't wait for y'all to watch the other 2 as well!
If you want to see Ethan in a drama/romantic comedy that is also a time capsule for the 90's (with a great cast you will recognize) you should watch Reality Bites. It's a great movie about 20 somethings finding themselves, and Ethan is fantastic in it.
Yes! It was billed as the quintessential Gen X movie at that time. So it was fitting that Winona Ryder was in it; she was the “it” girl during that period
watching poetry is such an amazing way to describe this movie. it’s my absolute favorite romance movie ever. there’s just something so incredibly special and magical yet incredibly human about it. it’s super dialogue heavy and slow which not everyone loves but to me that’s what makes it so unique.
So excited for you guys to watch this. My favorite love story/romance movies of all time. Best meet cute ever. The first two films especially are like visual poetry. Some really beautiful, quotable lines too. Please watch the rest of this trilogy, Before Sunset and Before Midnight. Director Richard Linklater based the film on a similar real life experience he had in 1989 with a woman named Amy Lehrhaupt. They met in a toy shop and ended up spending the whole night together but lost touch after that. He made the film as a kind of love letter to her hoping that she would see the film and they would reconnect. Linklater didn’t know then that Amy had passed away in a motorcycle accident in May 1994 before she reached her 25th birthday. Before Sunrise started filming a few weeks later. Linklater only learned of her death a few years ago when a friend of Amy’s who knew about the encounter, put it together and sent him a letter. 😭💔
I'm so happy you guys chose to do this movie ! Genuinely one of my favorite romance movies of all time. Thanks for the awesome reaction, hoping you'll continue the trilogy 😌♥️
OK, OK, fine, I am going to binge watch the two other movies tonight. I love this movie because it has French and American humor and flair, it almost never happens. I hope we get to see you react to the sequels!
physically and audibly squealed when i saw this on the recommended. this trilogy probably taught me everything i know about love, what a ride. i hope u guys decide to watch and upload the other two soon someday
This channel has fast become one of my favourites!! I love your dynamics and your commentary and your emotional honesty when it comes the the films you watch. edit: another amazing romance movie that is absolutely stunning to look at is portrait of a lady on fire!! I'd kill for a reaction/commentary from you guys on that one.
I really liked your ‘watching a poem’ line, Rob. A movie that immediately came to mind when you said that is ‘Portrait of a Lady on Fire.’ It’s a film that gives you the sense that every shot could be a painting or a poem.
Guys, I love your channel, I love your vibe and how you enjoy movies so much. I got into this movie not being sure if I’d like it and oh man, is was beautiful! Please react to the other two ❤
Never heard of this movie/trilogy but I totally loved! Might have to watch that again for myself. The dynamic, conversations and chemistry overall was so beautiful, makes you really believe in love. And the description "as if you'd be watching a poem" was so on point, totally agree.
You finally gave my all-time favorite movie trilogy a chance, no pressure. Haha! Personally, if I were to choose from the three, Before Sunset is probably the best one or maybe I just relate to it more now, considering I'm at the similar stage of my life. But I like Rob's poetry comment. And I can't wait for you guys to see the next one.
I grew up with Ethan Hawke’s films, starting with Explorers, co-starring River Phoenix (Joaquin Phoenix’s late brother), and Dead Poets Society with Robin Williams. BTW, you guys are in love with Ethan Hawke just as much as you are into Julie Delpy.
Thanks to Zuff, Rob and Bryce! 🌇 This trilogy is great. But my favorite from director *Richard* *Linklater* might be BOYHOOD (2014) or WAKING LIFE (2001)... runners up would be ME AND ORSON WELLES (2008) and BERNIE (2011).
this is a good one and the sequels are nice too. ethan hawke, if you like him, has been in a lot of things. i really like gattaca with him and uma thurman (who he was with a long time and had maya hawke with) reality bites is a classic 90s movie hes in with winona ryder that is good and has a good cast.
I loved this reaction, especially since none of you have seen it before!. I would say the 2nd movie is my least favorite and the 3rd was very realistic (can't say more than that) so enjoy!
I love love love this movie. Always made me think “what would I do in that situation”. Saw it when it first came out in theatres and the cliffhanger killed me…. Always wondering. Was so excited when years later after years of people asking… they made Before Sunset….
I love this movie so much. I saw this and the next 2 last year and it changed how I view filmmaking. I even got a tattoo of them. The chemistry is 👌🏻❤️ The dialogue is also amazing. It's so natural and genuine that ot makes you think it's improvised, but it's not at all. The long takes are so good too. The listening booth scene is one of my favorites scenes. Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpy hadn't heard that song before, they had only read the lyrics in the script, so you see them hear it for the first time in the scene. I can't wait for you to react to Before Sunset, it's my absolute favorite of the 3.
Ethan Hawke gives 1 of the top 2 best 'longing/love looks' in films/tv in Before Sunset, the 2nd movie, in the final scene. It's popular, people watch just that scene on TH-cam, lol. (Second favorite is in Hell on Wheels, when Cullen gives Lily Bell THAT look too).
Omg he truly does! It's the sweetest thing ever. That smile, the look in his eyes, beaming with pure love and adoration for her. It's the way anyone dreams of being looked at. You can't help but fall for him in that moment
can't wait to see you guys react to the other two films! the next one, before sunset, is not only my favorite of the trilogy but also possibly my favorite movie of all time idk there's just something about it
Definitely worth watching the rest of the trilogy, they're all classics. I remember stumbling across this movie and being so moved by how just a series of conversations between two people could be so interesting
I watched this movie a million times when I was a teenager while never expecting it to turn into a trilogy. It leaves the question to the audience of are you a pessimist or optimist that they would meet again in 6 months. I hope you watch the next 2. It’s beautiful to just be a fly on the wall during their conversations.
I actually watched part of these movies I think the second one first a long time ago before I knew it was a trilogy lol there all great you guys should definitely continue and watch the sequels
I don't care for romantic movies for most part I'm a horror/thriller/suspense fan. But there are a few I make exceptions for (When Harry met Sally, Love Jones, A Walk to Remember and this one).
You can tell that Fleabag had some inspiration from this movie. This is what a real conversation between two people who truly care about each other and are really listening to each other feels like.

Just curious, have you guys seen Freedom Writers (2007)? If you have what's your thoughts on that movie because it just came to my mind and was wondering what you thought about it because I LOVED it!! If you haven't I highly suggest it, it's okay if you don't wanna watch it tho!! Much love from Aussie fan
I thought this movie was just ok when it came out, then the sequel came out 9 years later. I simply adored that movie, it is one of my all time favorites. It was so great it made rewatching this one so much better to me.
I have this movie on dvd, I love all three of these movies! Ethan Hawke ughh, but besides that its literally so enthralling the trilogy is just *chefs kiss* but the first movie before sunrise always has a special place in my heart! ♥

Not even close
Thank you guys for reacting to this movie. Please react to Before Sunset (2004) and Before Midnight (2013).
That was great.
My favorite trilogy of all time we love to travel over time with richard linklater
beware the third one disappoints
I think it's great Ethan and Julie got to contribute to the dialog. It makes it even more dynamic and close to reality.

Absolutely incensed that you guys haven't watched the rest of the trilogy.

I thought this movie was just ok when it came out, then the sequel came out 9 years later. I simply adored that movie, it is one of my all time favorites. It was so great it made rewatching this one so much better to me.
This was a delight to get to watch you enjoy.
I saw this in the cinema back in the day.
Can't wait for y'all to watch the other two.
Liked and shared.
I have this movie on dvd, I love all three of these movies! Ethan Hawke ughh, but besides that its literally so enthralling the trilogy is just *chefs kiss* but the first movie before sunrise always has a special place in my heart! ♥
You guys should react to the kdramas, Night Has Come and D.P. they are really good 😊
