All of his movies, to this day, are a little... "art house" - I'm all for it but it's difficult to find someone to watch with. Hawke is my favourite Hamlet.
I love when Ethan talks about Linklater saying: "I've never been in a helicopter crash, I've never been involved in espionage... but the most interesting thing that ever happened to me, really, was that feeling when I really truly connected with another human being... ". Isn't that the truth? What is more meaningful than that?
True. I would say - nothing. However, I think it only becomes meaningful with time. I guess when you are young, you believe that you will meet many people with whom you'll connect with, but later in life you realize... it only happens a few times.
People talk about the great collaborations like Scorsese/DeNiro, Hitchcock/Stewart, maybe Burton/Depp but they never talk about Linklater/Hawke, they REALLY should
I watched sunrise and sunset. OMG..first time. I wasn't sure I was on this planet. To find the greatest dialogue between two eartly souls when in today's world its waay too superficial was the greatest time spent on movies. They might have just physically spent twenty four hours together but a lifetime afterwards in the 9yrs away. Everything and everyone was measured by that standard and to bring this intelligent conversation to match their hearts depth again and again. Please can this be required viewed as 12th grade course. Thank you Ethan and Julie. You pulled off such a talented guide to humane interaction. Thank you. Btw I must have lived my sweetheart at age 17.we just did not realize it then. For jack RIP..
"I've been with you in Vienna for six weeks and I haven't been bored for one second. If you can be as interesting and whole as you are here in this room - in front of the camera. And somebody is bored in a two-hour movie? Then I don't like them" - has got to be the most before-triology-thing to say.
Linklater, Hawke, and Delpy are the reason I aspire to be a filmmaker. Also these three movies are unbelievably brilliant and they don't get the recognition they deserve.
The long argument scene in Before Midnight is so honest, but it also reveals the humor of how couples who are together for a long time tend to fight. Before Sunrise is my all time favorite romantic movie.. and when she sings him the song in Before Sunset my heart melted. Love all three movies and am thankful for the people who made these films.!
crystalhaiku You are totally right about the fight scene in Before Midnight. I laughed through much of it because of self recognition and absurdity of it all. I expected them to break out laughing as well. It was done superbly.
Yes! It’s interesting now that the movie Marriage Story is out on Netflix, it reminded me so much of the last scene from Before Midnight. I think it was ahead of its time, I don’t think it got the recognition & acknowledgment it deserved
This interview needs to be in the BluRay box set of the trilogy. It can't just sit here in a corner of TH-cam separated from the movies! Make it happen, DP.
I've watched these films over and over. Sunrise is my favourite. They're the most beautiful films about falling in love through conversation. Perfection.
Yeah...I think you're right on that... and this is a guy who's steeped in 'sci-fi' action movie triliogies. As far as film narratives go, THIS is how you do it. Not a false note in the package and it does what continuing narratives are SUPPOSED to do and that's build upon what was presented before and expand, expound and illuminate it. And YES, I'd like to see a further chapter, but not before Hawke and Delpy are past 65 and the two and Linklater have come up with a script they all agree with.
Peter Darker a sequel would be great but i think i prefer it left to the imagination in a way because it would literally break my heart of Linklater split them up! Maybe if it moved on to the children's stories instead?
When Ethan jokes about Before Sunrise making like 2 million so no one would want a sequel but they did I almost jumped out of my skin. This is literally my favourite movie and years later stumbling across Before Sunset felt like if I died the next day my life was complete. At that moment it was like a second chance at love, at life. Who would have known a movie/characters could live inside you that long.Always believed the whole concept was brilliant.
I think what I really love about these movie trilogies is that the two lead characters always seem so real with each other and to us as the audience. They seem to be engaging in real, spontaneous conversation, and talking about whatever comes into their minds, and the conversation has a flow in itself and so natural. There are little mannerisms and small, insignificant actions involved when they interact with each other that make every scene seems so real. You don't for one moment aware that you are watching a film but feel like you are just watching two people connecting to each other in real time in real life.
What an incredible talent and mind. It's great for us that the universe transpired to bring these two great artists, Linklater and Hawke together for several movies (Not just the "Before" series). Ethan has so much passion for art and life that he gives meaningful answers for eveything. Great job DP/30
5:13 "My life has been really dramatic...it's been full of drama, and the most interesting thing that ever happened to me, really, is that feeling when you connect with another human being. True connection with another human being"
I've been watching before sunset almost constantly for a week - reliving my first love - cannot get enough of this unique film experience - for those that get this and feel what was intended - it will be an unforgettable experience
It definitely is Unique as Ethan says at the end. Loved all 3 movies and I could tell that the actors put a lot of themselves into their roles. The characters are close to their hearts and 'the stars aligned right to make it all happen'. Great and inspiring work by this awesome team. I have watched the movies several times and it just feels So real. Watching them age and talking about how their life has gone on....the ending of before midnight leaves you with a bittersweet feeling.....a hollow sensation in the gut like your worst fears have come true. But there is the hope.....there is always hope.
Different stories touch different people. When you're moved & absorbed by a story, that's truly a remarkable thing. Certainly with the Before series. They are all about the search for connection and meaning in the lives we live. If Before Midnight hit close to home that ultimately means that other people have gone through the same thing & you are not alone. It's the beauty of storytelling and what it gives to us. Connection. Meaning. Long may stories like that continue to enrich our lives.
All 3 movies were so perfect... They were so perfect in how they got right the relationship between mysticism, human connection and human imperfection. The subtleties with which they were working with- they were at least *inspired* level work, if not approaching genius.
At 10:25 he's talking about how "we" (as human beings i suppose) don't want somebody perfect to be our partner, and how the three of them tried to convey that in the script. His voice cracks and then he looks away pensively. Can't help but think (maybe I'm projecting) that the moment he says that his mind goes to his marriage with Uma Thurman or something from his past. Either way, one of the most earnest moments i've seen from an actor in an interview. Big fan.
A great interview. I liked the questioning, and uninterrupted answers and explanations from Ethan Hawke. Hawke makes us appreciate the effort, and artistic vision of Linklater, Delpy and himself, in creating this outstanding movie trilogy.
44:40 "It's unique. Most things that you work on are not." Important to remember not to get hung up on how important/meaningful we want our work to be.
Such a great interview. Almost as riveting as the movies themselves. Ever since I watched Before Sunrise, I've been obsessed with the trilogy and this interview just tops off the whole experience for me.
I've always liked Ethan Hawke. You feel like you could have a conversation with this guy about anything. I also feel a connection having been born around the same time in the same city (Austin) as him, and also having actually seen Richard Linklater filming a scene of Dazed and Confused, in the neighborhood near where I grew up, before I was old enough to know what I saw or who he was. I'm also a fanatic about the Before series - the dialogue is captivating in these movies; the characters so enthralling to continuously want to know more. So very well written, acted, filmed and put together. Big fan of the movie, Hawke, Delpy and of course Linklater.
I really love all about these movies. Stories, acting, actors, director atmosphere.... It's the first movie that I found myself I have interests in "Movie". Thank you for ya all and the film!!!!
A the 4th one . .HANK is backpacking in South America and we peer into his journey meeting someone, with parents talking about theirs experience way back when.
This is an exceptional interview, not least because of Ethan's willingness to share such a thoughtful and articulately presented story. It seems evident that he has a real respect for the interviewer; someone who, like the tone of the Before films, provides an allowance for breathing room and reflection. Thanks a lot for another great interview, Mr. Poland. I sincerely try my best to introduce your program to as many people as possible. Don't ever feel that your work is going unnoticed!
Just discovered (yesterday) that it's a Trilogy - and only saw the first two in recent months... Beginning to understand the hype 😉 The obsession begins... 😊😎
Wow amazing conversation.I love that they didn't try to gloss Before Midnight over and kept it realistic. I think it's just as good as the other films.
Lovely! Always wanted to hear an intimate version of the evolution of these films. Richard Linklater definitely one of my top favorite writer/directors. And these three great talents (Linklater, Delpy, Hawke), definitely created three timeless pieces that will carry over and speak for a long time. I remember when I first saw Sunrise/Sunset. I was blown away. So to be able to hear Hawke go into extreme depth about their process, was just a honor to see/hear. Great work DP, great subject!
I just realized that Ethan is the onez that puts the lines about Universe in the Before Sunset. I think he so clear about Universe can make sense of us. Im praying for them, to keep going with this Before .. is so good for us, to meet Celine and Jesse. ❤️
This is the perfect example of art made to please you, to make something beautiful, instead of creating something to please the critics, to make money, to create a fuzz. Like contemporary art nowadays. No art at all but only the critics "get it".
Fab interview! Personally, Midnight is my favourite of all three trilogies (Sunrise my least). Midnight is the most real. The writing, the story and the actors age gracefully. Richard Linklater sounds like an absolute dream to work with. I hope there's another in the Before series. I fantasise about titles, haha. Before Dawn. Before Noon. Before whatever. Tis very rare for something to get better as the stakes rise. I trust this killer trio can deliver. Especially after 2020. We need another artwork about human connection and life in general
@@Ffeoli1039 really? I find Sunrise too fluffy and saccharine. The other 2 wouldn't exist without it and Sunrise definitely serves a purpose, but yes. The later 2 are just so much better
When I heard they were making a sequel, I was really excited because Before Sunrise was one of my favourite films from the '90s (still is; but I love Before Sunset the most from the Trilogy)
something about him talking about playback and how it can actually mess up a director's confidence just rings true in so many aspects of life in this generation
“I started to realize I’m not in charge of the universe” yes that things just come in place for great things to happen, like this trilogy. It was a blessing. Unique indeed. Favorite love story. So real, so intimate, so trans-generational in its messages…. Love it
I cried long and hard when Before Sunrise ended. I was overjoyed when I heard there was a sequel. Then we were privileged again. I hope we get to see Celine and Jessie, one more time.
Romantic/romantic comedy is my least favourite movie genre, but I have to be honest and say the before trilogy is magnificent cinema art at its most beautiful complexion. It's a movie were I feel fortunate and grateful there are such superb nuanced director out there such as Linklater and such brave, creative, vulnerable actors such as Hawke and Delpy in the industry. The trilogy is a shining example of what can be achieved when you have great talent collaborate for an altruistic goal such as make a movie and not have making profits as the motivating factor but rather have the main driving force be creating timeless art. Congratulations on achieving that milestone.
Unbelievably powerful films, particularly since I have lived very similar events as those in the first two. The third one tells me how my own love story turns out....or at least how I hope it turns out. 💖
It's interesting that Ethan wanted to make the 3rd because the ending of the 2nd felt unfinished. I personally feel the opposite - that the ending of #2 would've perfectly concluded the series and the ending of #3 kind of begs for a #4
Third entry is better than Sunrise and on par with Sunset. They couldn't dread such romantic territory again. It was the logical outcome and it was spectacular.
Ella Bee…totally agreed, "outrageously pretentious but harmless." I admire Ethan's verbal ability, charm and wit, but sometimes he just seems so full of it (and yet I think he knows it…at points).
I have several movies series that I binge depending on my mood. This is one of my top 5 in regular rotation. I only recently discovered the 3rd movie and now wish I had not. If I wanted to experience couples talking about divorce I can just remember my own.
"Acting together is about creating a safe place for people to be foolish and people to be vulnerable and for people to be strong and people to be confident..." When he says this (near the end here), I think of what Julie admits to in another interview, how she'd make fun of Ethan during kissing scenes, turning to the crew and saying "oh, he kisses like an adolescent!". Of course the whole crew laughed, but it's not actually funny or a good way to work with anyone. In another interview Richard says that on the average day of shooting, Julie would turn up and say "I don't think we can shoot today - my best friend died", before dramatically disappearing (presumably into her trailer) for a while. He says "her best friend died every day of the movie", but she'd always, eventually, emerge back out on the set ready for the day's shoot. Such an amazing actress but just wow, imagine trying to work with a person like that.
My obsession with this series is becoming unhealthy

The trilogy is a shining example of what can be achieved when you have great talent collaborate for an altruistic goal such as make a movie and not have making profits as the motivating factor but rather have the main driving force be creating timeless art. Congratulations on achieving that milestone.
Unbelievably powerful films, particularly since I have lived very similar events as those in the first two. The third one tells me how my own love story turns out....or at least how I hope it turns out. 💖
he seems like a really cool guy
I love these films, it's perfection.
i can listen to ethan all day and not get bored (literally feels like i was just listening to jesse lol)
Fascinating interview! Very cool!
Hi, it’s end of 2022 and I just discovered trilogy and I love it!
Well, I did jump for joy when I heard there was a sequel to Before Sunrise. So there was one.
Just the 2... though this one is extra long.
Great interview !!!
I would love to watch another one after " before midnight "
It's interesting that Ethan wanted to make the 3rd because the ending of the 2nd felt unfinished. I personally feel the opposite - that the ending of #2 would've perfectly concluded the series and the ending of #3 kind of begs for a #4
Been waiting for this! Thank you!
Third entry is better than Sunrise and on par with Sunset. They couldn't dread such romantic territory again. It was the logical outcome and it was spectacular.
How much I adore you Ethan !!!!
Ella Bee…totally agreed, "outrageously pretentious but harmless." I admire Ethan's verbal ability, charm and wit, but sometimes he just seems so full of it (and yet I think he knows it…at points).
"Playback kind of creates this constant dissatisfaction with the mediocrity of life".... Damn, that really hits in 2021
I love the comments on the film. If this is boring to you; then it’s not for you.
I have several movies series that I binge depending on my mood. This is one of my top 5 in regular rotation. I only recently discovered the 3rd movie and now wish I had not. If I wanted to experience couples talking about divorce I can just remember my own.
19:20: "Playback creates this constant dissatisfaction.." He's on to something.
"Acting together is about creating a safe place for people to be foolish and people to be vulnerable and for people to be strong and people to be confident..."
When he says this (near the end here), I think of what Julie admits to in another interview, how she'd make fun of Ethan during kissing scenes, turning to the crew and saying "oh, he kisses like an adolescent!".
